Product Description
Though over a dozen books have been written on self injury in the past decade, none have looked from the eyes of those who experienced the gripping effects of choosing to inflict physical harm to one's own body. Dr. Gongola presents information gathered during her years of research in a format useful to professionals, educators, family members, and individuals who experience the struggle with self injury. A novel use of the Delphi research method places individuals who self injure in the role of being the expert on their experiences. Here these adolescents and young adults share their experiences with barriers to seeking and receiving therapy effective in treating their self injury. The format of this book was chosen out of respect for the participants in the research. It was the desire of these individuals to be given credence as being capable of participating not only in therapy for his or her own self injury but also in research and education of self injury for professionals, educators, and families. Accounting for the inclusion of the research methods chapter. This book as a whole or in parts is useful to all who have been touched by self injury. ... Read more

Product Description
Lesch?Nyhan syndrome, also known as Nyhan?s syndrome, Kelley-Seegmiller syndrome and Juvenile gout:546, is a rare, inherited disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGPRT), produced by mutations in the HPRT gene. The lack of HGPRT causes a build-up of uric acid in all body fluids: both hyperuricemia and hyperuricosuria, which lead to problems such as severe gout and kidney problems, poor muscle control, and moderate mental retardation. These complications usually appear in the first year of life. A striking feature of LNS is self-mutilating behaviors, characterized by lip and finger biting, that begin in the second year of life. Neurological symptoms include facial grimacing, involuntary writhing, and repetitive movements of the arms and legs similar to those seen in Huntington's disease. The direct cause of the neurological abnormalities remains unknown. Because a lack of HGPRT causes the body to poorly utilize vitamin B12, some boys may develop megaloblastic anemia. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Really useful information for injured people!
It is very difficult to find useful information for people who have been injured except from the strictly medical information point of view. This book tells you how to take charge of your life when you feel so vulnerable. It begins with choosing a doctor if you don'tlike the one you have.Suggestions are offered for handling shock and facing changes in career and lifestyle. It gives valuable information about head injury. It addresses guilt from being a "burden" and helps you through the civil and criminal justice systems, including valuable tips about dealing with insurance companies. The author is a clinical psychologist who, herself, was seriously injured.I haven't found a book this helpful for the injured and their families anywhere. ... Product Description
The telephone call every parent dreads... a near fatal automobile accident... and a family changed forever. Given only a one-in-a-hundred chance of survival, the victim beats the odds. Her visible injuries dissipate one by one, but she and her family must deal with a much more serious problem that can't be seen... a traumatic brain injury.

SMILE AND JUMP HIGH! is the moving account of how one young woman and her family struggle through the 'hidden tunnel of darkness' for more than four years. Their journey begins with re-learning basic physical tasks of life such as holding a fork and using a toothbrush; taking a shower and eating; and subsequently walking and talking. These prove to be easy compared with what comes next, however. They must still deal with residual brain deficits that affect her perception, reasoning, problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and volatile behavior.

The book is an emotional ride through the minds of family members and the victim using personal journals and a diary. It follows them on a sometimes serious, sometimes hilarious roller coaster ride from hope to despair, frustration to elation, finally ending in triumph. It also demonstrates the value of perseverance and love.

This is a story worth telling because it inspires hope and comfort for brain injury victims and their families. It's also a warning to every parent, teen, and young adult about making bad choices. The entire scenario was preventable... automobiles, alcohol and fatigue don't mix! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Don Lloyd does a great job of bringing you into the journey his family endures while dealing with Shannon's accident and recovery. As someone who watched her best friend go through a similar injury, I found this book hitting close to home.

Reading Don's words and thoughts took me back to the raw emotions I felt years ago, but gaining the different perspective a parent has.I admired Don and Sue's bravery as they let Shannon live on her own in Atlanta after the accident, and wondered if I would have had the courage to do that with my own child.

I think that Don, Sue, Brian, Kelley and Shannon are all lucky to have had each other during such a trying time. Tragedies such as this can pull a family apart but they fused together and helped heal Shannon as a unit.

Thank you Don and Shannon for allowing this window into your life to be open to others.God Bless you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Success is Possible
This book proves that a person can do more than the doctors say he/she can; he can recover more fully, can have a better chance at a good, active, social life, and can eventually become independent, even if only in a few ways. Again, this is a book of hope for those of us who love and care for family members who are recovering from traumatic brain injuries. There will be a greater need for this type of book in the future as there are tremendous numbers of TBI's coming back from the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. My son is one of those survivors, with the "unseen injury".

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for craniotomy patients and their caretakers
Lots of valuable and good advice and resources for both craniotomy patients and caretakers. But the portrayal of NYC and its boroughs is incomplete and unfair (p. 179 of the softcover.) I had brain surgery in 2005 and I live in NJ and volunteer in NYC. I find the people there compassionate, thoughtful and considerate. That's 99.99% of them. They help me on the subway, across the street and do countless other nice things! Also, it's 2006 and Donald treats his wife, Sue, like chattel. He's very patronizing. I know what Sue had to do to make Donald and Shannon comfortable. She cooked, cleaned and did everything that a hard working Aide does. And believe me it's more work and more intense for a brain injured person.

Donald goes through great pains and lots of analysis to explain the people, places, etc. that Shannon encounters. But on these matters it's a big miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone having to come to grips with recovering
Smile And Jump High!: The True Story Of Overcoming A Traumatic Brain Injury is the moving and compelling testimony of Shannon, a young woman who suffered a near-fatal auto accident. A devastating brain injury forces Shannon to embark on a grueling four-year journey of gradually re-learning simple physical skills, walking, talking, and coping with residual effects that drastically impair her problem-solving ability, behavioral temperament, and more. The inclusion of citations from personal journals of close friends and family members bear testimony to a long struggle culminating in triumph and rebuilding one's life from the ground up. Smile And Jump High is very highly recommended reading, especially for anyone having to come to grips with the recovering process necessitated by catastrophic injury or illness. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars OK
Most useful are the stretching techniques. However most of the content is common sense to me, and supposedly every martial art practitioner. Unless you are a novice in this business, it is not gonna be that informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've been taped up by Trish.
Trish is the real deal.I was a nationally elite competitor for years and I'd always go over to Trish's table for whatever I needed. Her taping techniques are excellent for prevention of injuries. She's taken fighters with injuries (including myself) that would normally not allow them to stand and taped them to allow them to continue.Taping isn't all of it, though. There are so many kinds of injuries that occur and Trish has extensive experience.I haven't read this book, but I learned enough just by watching and using her techniques to extend my own fighting career for years. If I'd known earlier in my career to go to her table for the preventative stuff, I would still be competing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Taekwondo is NOT martial arts
Would you buy this book if the title was "The bare essentials guide for taekwondo injuries?". That's exactly what is it. The advise is exclusively for injuries from taekwondo - predominately impact injuries from sparring. The author says absolutely nothing about any other martial art including the grappling arts of judo, jujutsu, submission wrestling and NHB. Thus there are an entire class of injuries that are not addressed by this book. Indeed, the chapter on taping techniques is limited to feet, ankles, hands and wrists, namely the joints most affected by point sparring. Moreover, the chapters on strength and conditioning and care of injuries are perfunctory and leave the reader wanting more detailed information...

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
This is the best written book of this type that I have read. She is able to make a very general topic focused and easy for parents and coaches to understand. The information is accurate without being overly technical and is easy to follow. The photographs will really help those people who have trouble visualizing the text. Any parent with children who participate in martial arts should read this book so that they can better communicate with health care providers and help to prevent some types of injuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential "Bare Essentials"
I am a Taekwondo Instructor with 28 years in the martial arts and have a fairly extensive martial arts library.I find this to be a unique and incredibly valuable book to any responsible martial arts instructor. It covers everything from correct preventative measures to clear and precise taping instructions with illustrative photographs, to the correct treatment of injuries likely to occur in martial arts training.I recommend this book HIGHLY.

Description:
A variety of variables have been found to augment perceived social validity of behavioral interventions. In the present study, potential effects of behavioral function were evaluated. Sixty students inexperienced in work with people with mental retardation, and 60 experienced staff watched one of two carefully matched acted videos depicting self-injury maintained by attention or escape from task demands. Participants were also told whether the self-injury depicted typically led to mild or severe consequences for the person filmed. Participants rated six interventions in terms of their acceptability and effectiveness for the behavior depicted. A hierarchy of acceptability was replicated: reinforcement-based procedures were rated as more acceptable and effective. There were also effects of behavior severity and rater experience. However, few effects of behavioral function were found. Potential implications of staff undifferentiated attitudes towards functional treatments are discussed. ... Read more

Description:
Despite increasing attention to the phenomenon of deliberate self-harm (DSH), the literature currently lacks a unifying, evidence-based, theoretical framework within which to understand the factors that control this behavior. The purpose of the present paper is to outline such a framework-the Experiential Avoidance Model (EAM) of DSH. The EAM poses that DSH is primarily maintained by negative reinforcement in the form of escape from, or avoidance of, unwanted emotional experiences. Literature on factors that may lead to experiential avoidance is reviewed, along with the mounting empirical evidence that DSH functions to help the individual escape from unwanted emotional experiences. The EAM integrates a variety of research on emotions, experiential avoidance, and DSH within a clinically useful framework that sparks novel research directions. ... Read more

Description:
This article utilizes a developmental psychopathology framework to explicate one pathway, originating in childhood traumatic experience, toward the development of self-injurious behavior (SIB). The descriptive psychopathology of SIB is summarized first, followed by an overview of theoretical interpretations of SIB within psychoanalytic, neo-analytic, behavioral, and biological paradigms. Building on these empirical and theoretical foundations, a developmental psychopathology framework is used to model the development of SIB in the aftermath of childhood traumatic experience, particularly maltreatment. In this model, maltreatment undermines positive adaptation at motivational, attitudinal, instrumental, emotional, and/or relational levels of competence. In turn, vulnerabilities in the child's adaptive resources necessitate the application of alternative regulatory and relational strategies, such as self-injury, to the negotiation of contemporaneous and prospective developmental issues. The article concludes with a discussion of the empirical and clinical implications of a developmental understanding of SIB as a compensatory regulatory strategy in posttraumatic adaptation. ... Description:
A review of the literature on human and non-human animal self-injury reveals that there has been little cross-fertilization of ideas between these two domains. Each body of research offers particular strengths, which, if combined, may more keenly inform clinicians and researchers alike about the nature of human self-injury. While research on self-injury among humans has necessarily relied upon correlational designs, researchers who study self-injury among non-human primates have more tightly controlled experimental methods at their disposal. Experimental research allows researchers and clinicians to address issues of causality in ways that are not possible with correlational designs. Despite the difficulties of drawing inferences from different species, a review of the experimental data on non-human primate self-injury may give researchers fresh insights into the elusive nature of human self-injury. This article highlights the research and theoretical material pertaining self-injury and identifies ways in which animal models of self-injury might inform research and clinical understanding of human self-injury. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Its ok
I was expecting more, new information on LMT biomechanics. While the book is well laid out, presents itself with colorful and attractive photos and diagrams, it didn't provide me with any new information. Just more of the same antiquated info taught in massage school. Disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book!
I have really enjoyed this book because it not only offers helpful information on body mechanics, it also has interactive exercises that help you self correct bad habits! I am currently working as an LMT, and have had body mechanics training, but I still found this useful for reference and touching up my routine!

5-0 out of 5 stars A new approach
I just heard this author speak at a teacher's conference. The material presented was excellent, and reflected the fresh and new approach of this book. I am so pleased that finally there is a book that treats the subject of body mechanics in a functional and practical way. This book is exactly what our profession has been waiting for. Buy it and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
If you are a massage student, therapist, or teacher of massage therapy, you should buy this book. It's the best book written on body mechanics. It provides all the information needed to sustain a healthy massage career. The burn-out rate for massage therapists is too short; this book will help to eliminate it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem
I've been teaching massage for over 15 years, and in all that time I've never come across such a wonderful book on body mechanics. This book is a gem. As a teacher I find its content up-to-date and concise. The photos are clear, the exercises are brilliant, and the tips for students are an extra bonus. My students have learned an incredible amount from this book, and I see it in their work with each other. I wouldn't be without this book in the classroom, and my students will be so thankful for it after they graduate. ... Read more
