Product Description

These are the facts:1. Among the millions of people on the Internet there exists a signifigant percentage for whom online pornography is not, and never will be, a "recreational pursuit."Rather it is, or soon will become an addiction.2. Researchers and clinicians have established that pornography addiction contains all the characteristics of any other kind of addiction: mood altercation, compulsion, dependency, the need for higher and more exotic "doses" and withdrawl symptoms when the person tries to stop.3. Because of the "Skinner Box Effect," pornography on the Internet is different and far more virulent than the customary forms. The reason is because it derives its potency from both the content of what is seen, AND from the way it is presented to the user by the technology itself.

For those suffering from the problem, Dr. Grundner provides a series of behavioral and spiritual techniques to help stop the downward spiral. Over 30 personal accounts are presented—taken directly from the Internet itlesf—of the pain, suffering, loss of jobs, and failed marriages that have resulted from online pornography and sexual addiciton.

This book is a warning, but one which contains a large measure of hope.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good first book, Bad otherwise
First, I recommend, if possible, going to a book store and viewing any book before you consider purchasing it online to save money. Amazon.com only allows you to view a few pages of certain books and this really isnt sufficient for those trying to evaluate the contents of a book, particular an informative book like a self help book.

The Skinner Box Effect is 153 pages long, 8 chapters divided into 3 sections - Discovery, Recovery, and In Our Own Words, and include 4 appendixes - A List of National Twelve Step Groups (by address, phone and website with a total of 9), The Twelve Traditions of SLAA, Further Reading (recommended reading by the author on the subject with a total of 19), and a list of online resources (by website with a total of 17). The appendix portion comprises only about 10 of the 153 pages of this book.

Section 1 Discovery is made up of 3 chapters and like the title suggest, it walks you into the subject matter assuming that you, the reader, is a potential sex addict. So it provides material for the reader to evaluate the degree of their addiction. It discusses lightly why internet pornography is so potent and uses the skinner box effect to explain (if youre just interested in the title I suggest googling skinner box on the internet). The explanation is rather enlightening, but only one chapter is devoted to it and is never mentioned again throughout the rest of the book.
Section 2 Recovery is made up of 4 chapters and contains pretty much all the same things you'd find on the internet if you were to do a search on recovery for sex addiction. It has the twelve step program, the meditation, praying etc.
Section 3 In Our Own Words is actually just one chapter devoted to personal stories of sex addicts and how their addiction has destroyed their lives.

I purchased this book because the title caught my attention. It was scientific and I purchased this book thinking that the content would address the issue mostly if not strictly in a scientific manner. Unfortunately, The Skinner Box Effect did not meet my expectation, particularly in terms of dealing with sex addiction, where the author brings nothing new to the table rather he restates what treatments are currently available.

This book is written for sex addicts and their spouses. It is an easy read, user friendly - there a headers within each chapter, so its a page turner. If you've done research on the subject matter already, then purchasing this book would probably be a waste of money for you. If this is the first time you've ever investigated this subject, then this book is definitely a good start.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Skinner Box Effect
This book is an excellent resource for both clinicians with porn-addicted clients, and for the clients themselves. It clearly answers the question "Why" in terms that anyone can understand. I routinely assign this book as homework for my porn addicted clients.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Great Metaphor--But Book Doesn't Follow Through
Books on sexual addiction/Internet porn addiction tend to be alike. The information presented is general and more descriptive rather than prescriptive. Most people interested in these books, including me, already buy into the addiction/dependence theory; what we really want to learn are some effective strategies to break the cycle. In this regard, "The Skinner Box Effect" falls short. There's a great implied metaphor there: men going to the net for porn are like laboratory rodents conditioned to getting pellets for good behavior. A missed opportunity to explore this metaphor and the reductive behavior of those trapped in the rodent's box of Internet porn.

5-0 out of 5 stars At Last a Book that Explains WHY!!
Finding a book which moralizes about Internet porn is easy.Finding one with pseudo-scientific speculation (that takes you no where) also is easy. This is the only book I've seen which actually explains WHY Internet-based pornography is such a powerful draw to so many (the Skinner Box Effect), and explains how to get out of it.It was not just useful to me; it was a major eye-opener.If you only get one book on this subject--it should be THIS one.

1-0 out of 5 stars As useful as the AOL Disk it comes with
I 'm still wondering who had the bright idea of inserting an AOL disk for 1,000 free hours behind the front cover of this book! Hello? As for help this book suggests getting rid of your computer and modem. Right. I suggest reading "In the Shadows of the Net"....an excellent book for help and support for this addiction. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How Love Can Conquer Sex Addiction.
LOVE OVER LUST is a gripping story of a couple who face the worst and come out still loving each other. This wife discovers that her faithful, church-going husband has a secret addiction - pornography. She can hardly say the word, let alone believe her husband is capable of being involved in this dirty habit.

Karen searches for guidancefrom self-help books, doctors, clergy, etc.But unlike alcohol and drug addiction, this topic is very rarely faced or discussed. She has little resource information as to where to even begin dealing with the unspoken.

The author kept a journal of her steps in healing, as well as her roller-coaster feelings throughout the ordeal. She tells of her husband's courageous and painful climbup the mountain to win back her trust, and their love that finally conquers.

LOVE OVER LUST is one of the few resources for this kind of addiction.Karen Valient handles it with pain and honesty - and love. ... Read more

Product Description
A brilliant new guide to understanding the origins of codependence and the path to recovery by a nationally recognized authority on dependency and addiction.

In this fresh new look at codependence, Pia Mellody traces the origins of this illness back to childhood, describing a whole range of emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and sexual abuses. Because of these earlier experiences, codependent adults often lack the skills necessary to lead mature lives and have satisfying relationships.

Recovery from codependence comes from clearing up the toxic feelings left over from childhood and learning to reparent oneself by intervening on the adult symptoms of codependence. Central to Mellody's concept is the idea of the "precious child" that needs healing within each adult. She creates a framework for identifying codependent behavior and describes an effective approach to recovery that includes both therapy and self-help processes. Designed to be used with her new workbook for codependents, Breaking Free, this is a powerful tool for understanding the nature of codependence. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recovery Offers Hope!
This book was for me the first time I really started to understand the contention in my marriage and my own anger. I am now a recovering addict and I feel hope for healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it in less than 7 days!
I haven't ever read a self-help book this fast ever.Really, really good for those of us who struggle with relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life is hard enough
A brilliant book to help anyone better understand themselves and partner. A honest and challengingprocess of rescuing each other from toxic relationship situations. My psychologist recommended i read it to stop dancing the same Damaging routine over and over again with my partner. It was time for us to finally accept the addiction, face the music and free our mind, body and spirit frompre-existing rubbish cluttering our whole person. So far the strategies are working for our whole family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended to all my sponsees
I've been in recovery for sex and love addiction for 14 plus years. When I first read this book, about 12 years ago, it blew me away.I've recommended to people ever since and their reaction is nearly always the same..."Oh my god,now I understand why I have such pain and difficulty in relationships!"
While the book will explain the addictive nature of love addiction in the first couple of chapters, it is but a tool to move beyond the shadowy existence so many of us live, to a full life of love, joy and fulfillment. There is a 12 step group that has helped me along this road. I could not have advanced with out the support of other addcits in recovery. If you are serious about getting off the treadmill, you'll find that group. Hope your journey is as rewarding.

4-0 out of 5 stars speaking from my success
i was one of those people who was addicted, but did't know it...then came this book.It was both a blessing and a curse.A curse because i realized i had a problem bigger than myself and comming to terms with an addiction is not easy(which is why admitting to your problem is the first step). A blessing because it let me know that there was help.It identifyed my every symptom, my every emotion and my every devestation.
Most of the book describes what love addiction is,how it is developed, and the various ways in which it ruins your life with out you even reliazing it.The author gives lots of examples, many including her owm experiences.I give the book 4 stars for beeing such an important eye opener and teaching me so much about this emotional illness. The reason i don't give it 5 stars is because the "work-book" in the end is not enough to help you break the addiction on it's own.If you are really interested in moving past your addiction i would recomend adding to your collection her book + workbook "facing codependence".even in this book she will tell you that at the heart of the addiction is codependence, which you need to overcome.
Love addiction is most of all Painfull and isolating.Your relationships go so wrong so fast that it really takes a toll on your heart...to be honest there were times when i thought that i must have been born wrong, that there was something so inately wrong with me that i was destined to only find heart break.I had decided to not even try anymore because there was no point when they all ended the same:with my heart crushed.
In order to encourage others to get help i will admit that in the past my longest relationship lasted 5 months(most averaging about 3) and only the first month was good because after that a very intense hell would break loose.I felt out of control. But after Pia's help and with my persistence to get better i have now been in a HEALTHY,LOVING, relationship with someone for more than a year :0)and emotionally i am more stable than i have ever been in my 26 years of life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for spouses and/or partners of sex addicts !!
As a sex addiction therapist and a coaddict/codependent to a sex addict, I was thrilled to see that this author added a new chapter on cybersex addiction in this revised edition of Love, Infidelity, and Sexual Addiction. I have read the original version multiple times, as it was the first book I read after discovering my own husband's sex and love addiction. The author, Christine Adams, took up the challenge to write on this difficult, complex subject effectively communicating the foundation of a not easily understood and very unwelcome, shame based disease. Due to the recent explosion of cybersex addiction and the trends reflecting a continued growth in the numbers of those afflicted with the disease, it is not surprising that Ms. Adams has chosen to increase the effectiveness of her already well received book by adding the new chapter. After reading the cybersex chapter, I was very pleased with the quality content and effective delivery of her writing.
Although the numbers of those afflicted with sex addiction, will continue to increase, their spouses, partners, and the addicts themselves will have quality, very digestible, information available to them through books like this.
I have already referred this revised edition to clients, family, and friends. It is especially helpful for those being introduced to sex addiction and cybersex addiction for the first time. A great resource!

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but poorly written
For those who have been shocked by learning of a significant other's sexually addictive behavior, this book contains some helpful information, especially in the final chapter on cybersex. Wading through it is a bit tough, though, because it very poorly written and apparently was published without any editing. Codependency is narrowly defined and explored, and thus the portions on regarding it will apply to some but not all readers. So will the author's statement that finding out about her husband's first affair was not so hard. ... Read more

Product Description

At a time when Bill Clinton should be carving out his place in history, he instead has been forced once again to defend himself against charges of sexual misconduct. The charges, along with the accompanying allegations of perjury and obstruction of justice, threaten to destroy all that he has lived his life to accomplish. Is he, as his defenders assert, the victim of political enemies determined to bring him down? Or can the forces driving Bill Clinton to the precipice of self-destruction be found in the darkness of his own psyche?

In this provocative book, Dr. Jerome Levin, a leading addictions expert and a respected psychotherapist at the prestigious New School for Social Research in New York City, digs deep into Bill Clinton's past and discovers a pattern of tawdry and destructive relationships consistent with classic sexual addiction. Dr. Levin traces the seeds of Clinton's addiction back to a childhood haunted by emotional disloyalty and confusion. We watch this future president grow to adulthood, excelling through his wits, but remaining emotionally bound to the chaos of his youth. We follow his political rise as we observe his growing need to take greater and more dangerous risks to satisfy his insatiable appetites.

By comparing Clinton's outrageous behavior against the backdrop of classic sexual addiction, Dr. Levin offers all Clinton watchers a closely reasoned and compelling portrait of one of the most enigmatic, complex, and driven men of our time.

Amazon.com Review
Isn't it funny that when we were children, our parents used totell us that it didn't matter what other people said about us, butwhenever some new story emerges about Bill Clinton's sexual conduct, people rush to be the first to announce that his bad reputation willset off a national crisis?

Unpacking the assumptions from Jerome Levin's The ClintonSyndrome takes some doing. First, of course, there's theassumption that all of the allegations about Clinton'sbehavior--from before Gennifer Flowers up to and including PaulaJones, Kathleen Willey, and Monica Lewinsky--are true. Then there'sthe assumption that these incidents--which of course are alltrue, and all occurred just as Clinton's detractors describethem--are indicative of "sexual addiction." Of course, in order tomake that assumption, Levin first has to assume that sexual addictionis a real condition, a matter about which there is still considerabledebate, and among the dozen or so assumptions we have to make in orderto believe in sexual addiction is that any behavior "at variance withcommunity standards" is not only "damaging to the individual" butevidence of addictive behavior.

Based on these assumptions, we are presented with a psychobiographicalportrait of Clinton in which his formative years--raised by atempestuous, sexually provocative mother and grandmother, forced todeal with an abusive, alcoholic stepfather--lead to a dysfunctionalpersonality that engages in compulsive sex "seeking reassurance andvalidation of his worth," and that he "had about as much chance ofleaving [Monica Lewinsky] alone as a cocaine addict has of passing upa line." Even Clinton's good qualities, such as his empathy andintelligence, are reduced to coping mechanisms that he picked up inorder to survive a traumatic childhood marked by "emotional incest."Even if Paula Jones was lying about what happened, Levin tells us,Clinton's refusal to settle the lawsuit was still a denial that hisaddiction to sex was out of control. It's a vicious circle: Clintonseems to be acting like a sex addict because he is a sexaddict, and he's a sex addict because he appears to be acting like asex addict.

Although Levin claims to analyze the ethical dimensions of the Clintonscandals, as opposed to the moral dimensions (or, in psychoanalyticterms, to view the matter through the "rational" ego rather than theaccusing, judgmental superego), the invocation of terms like"community standards" inevitably plunges the discussion into a moralclimate. Levin as much as admits that his argument is to some degree ajudgment of Clinton's behavior "driven by anger at him for having puta political agenda I support in jeopardy.... I have an emotionalinvestment in the success of the American Experiment, and I care thata president's apparent personal pathology might damage thatexperimental process." Given that America has been able to weathersuch "crises" as Abraham Lincoln's depression, Ulysses S. Grant'salcoholism, Theodore Roosevelt's sadistic love of violence, Warren G.Harding's corruption, and what we would now perhaps call JFK's "sexualaddiction," all the brouhaha over Bill Clinton--or, more accurately, over other people's opinions about what exactly Bill Clinton mighthave done--can seem, to borrow a term from psychological circles,hysterical.--Ron Hogan ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What everyone should consider before judgement
This book is a must read for everyone who is so quick to condemn President Clinton on the grounds of his "zipper problem." It is a poignant biographical book that follows his problem [addiction] through his life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who would buy this?
Prima Publishing, a small company known for appealing to a market segment of right-wingers who have $24.95 to throw around on tacky books like the Starr Report, was counting on this book to be their big bestseller thisyear. Whoops. It's a clumsily-written analysis of Clinton that willsurprise no one. Near the end of the book, the author -- some bearded,wild-eyed quack who no one else would publish -- appeals for the Presidentto get help by going to see a therapist like the author himself. Howtouching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a psychological perspective!
Dr. Levin is an expert on addictions and the psychological forces that fuel them. His professional knowledge, combined with a good deal of research on Clinton's life, make his "speculative" casecompelling and convincing.Clinton's stormy childhood has beenacknowledged, but Levin is the first to trace cause and effect, and to tryto penetrate Clinton's psyche--the place, of course, where the Lewinskyscandal sprang from.Levin pieces together past and present, and makes acompelling case for sexual addiction and unconscious trauma.Levin needsa writer, however, to craft his argument into a more convincing and fleshedout whole. A voyeuristic psychological profile of a political figure is atreacherous endeavor, especially considering the moral miasma thatpolitical scandals wade in.And Levin's conventional and informal prose donot do his subject, or his professional knowledge and experience, justice. But if you realize that Levin is a psychologist, and not a writer, you willbe rewarded with a much needed and convincing portrait of our President asa psychological being.

Ted Parker grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, the son of an alcoholic house painter and a truck-stop waitress mother. In high school, he was a gifted athlete which gained him limited access to the "in crowd" of his high school. He soon began attending parties at the homes of some of the wealthiest kids in school. There was often alcohol served at these parties and he discovered that he seemed to fit in much easier when he had a bit of a "buzz" on when he drank. Little did he know that these early drinking experiences were priming him for a long and difficult battle with booze.

As he grew older, Ted was to become what is known as a "highly functioning alcoholic." Sex was also to become a damaging co-obsession. For years, he justified his sexual behavior because he didn't screw around with other women when he wasn't drinking. When he was his "good self," he was a loving husband and father. His "demon self" only surfaced when he was drinking which, as time passed, he found himself doing more and more.

At times, "Next to Normal" is humorous in ironic and sometimes disturbing ways. But, for the most part, it is a brutally honest look at how well meaning human beings can become dominated by demons that seem beyond their control. It will also give hope to others either fighting the same battles with their own personal demons or those involved in a closerelationship with another person who is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful, if simplified
This book is helpful to many of my clients; they have not previously participated in therapy. While those who have attempted to deal with their pain in the past might not benefit as much, (the book contains verybasic information), those beginning to deal with this issue would find support, encouragement and easily understood information within this book. Very practical, very sympathetic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellant book for therapists and survivors of sexual abuse.
An excellant book for both therapists and survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The information is presented in a very sensitive fashion that is less likely to evoke a strong negative effect in survivors. It invites thereader to explore the devastating effects of sexual abuse at their ownspeed. The author reiterates the importance of self care and supportthroughout the healing process and gives many suggestions as to how to dothis in healthy manner.A fine and gentle introduction to a troublingsubject. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars OVERLY SIMPLISTIC
First let me say that there are a few good points in this book, but if your looking for a book that will help you understand sex addiction and heal from it,there are much better choices! This book is overly simplistic and incredibly superficial. It's take on sexual addiction, I believe, will only frustrate someone that is looking for legitimate reasons and solutions to problem sexual behaviour. It also trivializes the idea of love.I definitely wouldn't buy this book again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent IF you can read at grad. student level
WARNING: This book is written by & for clinicians at the counseling/psychology graduate level. If you don't have a B.A. or more you will probably find this book too cumbersome to be worth the higher-than-average price for sexual addiction recovery literature. If you do you may find this book a stunningly thorough encapsulation of practically every credible sex addiction treatment theory/strategy under the sun.

Ch 2: Families of Origin"Sex addicts are made, not born..." "All the sex addicts we have treated experienced some types of painful childhood... The unresolved childhood issues that plague sex addicts include: low self esteem... abandonment fear... blurred boundaries... mood disorders... dehumanizing sexual attitudes... undeveloped social skills... secretiveness & superficiality... distrust... escape strategies... isolation & profound loneliness."Genogram.Trauma Egg or Lifeline.Gestalt Techniques.Family of Origin Sessions.

Ch 3: Coordinating the Treatment TeamPrimary Therapist... Group Therapists... Addiction Specialist... Couples Therapist... Child Therapists... Specialists in the Treatment of Sexual Abuse Victims... Sex Therapists.

Ch 4: Eliminating Deviant Behavior: Identifying the Cycle of Deviance & Addiction.Models of Addictive Cycle: Patrick Carnes' Sex Offenders' Cycle.Sex Offenders' Studies workbook Cycle.Paul Simpson's (very detailed) Model of Sex Addiction Cycle takes up most of this chapter. The pool of mistaken beliefs (survival beliefs, feelings of inadequacy, intimacy blockers, dysfunctional beliefs about sex) --> anticipate rejection --> victim posturing --> compensatory behaviors --> social/emotional isolation --> fantasy relationship (emot. intimacy) --> fantasy relationship (sexualized) --> added focus: deviance --> cruising --> grooming --> the sexual act --> transitory guilt --> reconstitution --> pool of mistaken beliefs.

A gander at the table of contents, the index & the writing style in the first few pages will reveal the rest. This book is ALL ABOUT treatment strategies. If you want first person accounts or an easy, engaging read about recovering from sexual addiction you'll be happier with books like anything from Patrick Carnes, Lust Anger Love by Maureen Canning, Hope & Recovery by Hazelden or any 12 Step books by Sex Addicts Anonymous, Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous, S-Anon (for partners), and (especially if you're straight & married) Sexaholics Anonymous. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A major breakthrough in addiction treatment
It may sound trite, but I'll say it.

Anyone responsible for delivering addiction treatment should read Doug's book. It is a major contribution to the addiction/recovery treatment literature. As a result of his redirecting our apporach to treatment we have been more successful with more clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I attended one of Doug's fascinating workshops and waited for his book to be published in 2009. The book is amazing as well, with excellent lesson guidelines, which may be used in a group setting or as a teaching tool alone. Doug covers several aspects of sexual health + addiction, and makes even the lay person capable of understanding the two issues as a whole entity, and their impact on a person's journey of recovery. It's a "must-have" for my practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Life is Again With God
Where do I start with a book of this calibre!!!

I have been a christian for 10 years now and I have had a troublesome life, in terms of my brother dying and my mother having a breakdown... I can go on but I don't wanna bore you to death. Since these tragic events took place, I was not the same person. I basically fell head over hells into depression and I did not realize it until later on in my life.

This is when I began to dabble in porn to keep me satisfied and keep me from losing my mind and devling deeper into depression and suffering. "I am in no way justifying myself just telling you how it is".

As the months and years went by my descendance into porn and fetishes etc became obsessive and become the focal point of my day. No matter what I was doing or who I was talking to My mind and feelings were in a place of sexual fantasy.

I have accumulated £6000 > $10,935.70 "I am from the UK" of expenses on internet sex, fetish, sites and also video's, CD's.

I became entralled with it and my life was about sex and my sexual fantasies. Not My family, GF, or Friends.

I was a very selfish and arragant so and so because all I wanted to do is get off and explore the world of sex and fantasies. My Lust and Urges were only satisfied momentarily.

I believed this was a good therapeutic ritual of destressing myself and saisifying my monsterous urges.

This went on and on.

I knew I was going to far into my obssessive behaviour when I started to explore the darker side of sex. I was getting into things of which I would neverever be excited by if I was in my sane mind. I tried to stop and even went without indulding in my fifth for a week or so, but the temptation and seductive nature of beautiful women and sex etc, always pulled me in and then spat me out. I was a slave to my desire. Visting Prostitues, Mistresses.

This is when I knew I had no control over my obsession, I was very much a fully fledged sex addict.

Now This is the point where I tried to stop and exit this world.
However this was an impossible task for me as I have conditioned myself with this lifestyle to such a degree that all I ever knew on how to get comform, destress and feel a temporary kind of love is by doing these things. I became very lazy, didn't want a relationship at all. I just wanted what I wanted. I was battling with myself all the time trying to come out of this mess I have created.

I didn't realize how far away from god I was until I even thought about him. All I ever thought about was myself and needs.

This is when I began to pray and ask for forgiveness, to repent my sins. It worked. The pull of my sexual deseries became tolerable. However I fell foul of my sin again and again and again. As the Devil knew my weaknesses and my fantasies etc.

I was weak and lost in the world of darkness and emptiness.
Until I made a super strong effort to break free and throw away myold lifestlye completely.

I became close with god once again and god gave me a sample of what kind of peace and love to expect If I obey him and live a life of righteousness and truth. The Feeling was amazaing, I felt soooooo at ease and at peace, It was truly amazing.

I let temptation get me again, I knew at this point I needed some serious help. However I was to paraniod going to my paster or counsellor. So I went looking for some selfhelp books, this is where I found this Monumental Book From This amazing Person Stsve G. God is Speaking Through him on so many levels.

This book has now changed my life completly, I know its hard to believe but it has. The book dissects the mind of a person dealing with sexual addiction, This is the ultimate book about dealing with sexual addiction or sin, I am now close with god and I know the tactics of the enemy. This book will identify why you are having this problem and also give you the tools and weapons on how to destroy thetemptation of lust. Also very importantly how to have a healthy sexual godly relationship with the one you love. I urge you to buy this book, this will completly change your life if you are dealing with this kind of problem. Lust is a hideous monster that can never be satisfied only leaving you empty with no self respect and with even more pain and sufferings. Thank you Lord God Almighty for this book and for Steve G. ... Read more
