Product Description
An epidemic of smallpox among Aboriginal people around Sydney in 1789 puzzled the British as there had been no cases on the ships of the First Fleet. The author uses previously unpublished material from 19th-century archives to argue that epidemics of smallpox among Aboriginals preceded European settlement. It argues that they originated in regular visits to the northern coast of Australia by Macassan fishermen from nearby islands. ... Read more

Product Description
The once-dreaded scourge of smallpox has been eradicated through barrier immunisation. The eminent scientist Edward Jenner (1749-1823) was a pioneer in demonstrating that vaccination was an effective means of preventing smallpox. In the three groundbreaking treatises contained in this volume, originally published between 1798 and 1800, Jenner summarises his evidence in favour of vaccination and describes individual cases. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Old School Science
To say that Edward Jenner's "Vaccination Against Smallpox" was a dull read is comparable to saying that hell is a bit warm. While trudging through this oeuvre, I could not help but imagine myself doing more enjoyable things--like punching myself repeatedly, or walking through a bed of hot coals, or even sitting through a Dane Cook routine...Well, that's taking it too far, maybe not the last one.I consider myself a proponent of primary sources, but my point is not to make the mistake of reading this word for word.Jenner is very thorough in documenting all of his cases, but they are more or less the same.Furthermore, the deluge of letters from his peers is redundant and not at all necessary even in the rhetorical sense.
Nonetheless, the importance of this work should not be diminished. In the context of medical science in the 18th century, this dissertation was a breakthrough; it employs many of the fixtures of modern experimental science we take for granted today: objectivity, theory, and most importantly, reproducibility.Jenner constructs a convincing argument that is grounded upon fact and direct observation despite the lack of strict controls (as is seen from his confusion about the source of Vaccinia) and rigorous statistical analysis.Unfortunately, it has none of the minimalist laconism that is apparent in the slim majority of the scientific literature today."Vaccination" was probably conceived to convince Jenner's peers that vaccination was indeed a viable and safer alternative to Variolation. That purpose today is moot, since smallpox has been eradicated, but it is worth skimming to gain knowledge of the context of Jenner's work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Look Into Early Scientific Methodology
I'm always in awe of the great science pioneers that have gone before us. This brief book provides a peak into the thoughts and methods of one of those pioneers. As long as the reader keeps in mind the literary style ofthe time as well as the level of maturity of scientific experimentation, they will find this book to be inspiring and useful. I especially recommendthis book to future scientists and those interested in the history ofscience. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than nothing
I was annoyed that Pontiac's Rebellion was not mentioned in this book, but Diamond doesn't start talking about smallpox until the 1830s.

I think the presentation of American Indian History here is a little weird. On the timeline (page 7) are such events as A.D.476: Fall of the Roman Empire, 1096-1219: Crusades, where you're like, "And this is revelant because...?"Others either trivialize Indians or are borderline offense. ("1621 Pilgrims celebrate first Thanksgiving with Indians at Plymouth, Massachusetts, 1991: Movie Dances With Wolves engages millions of Americans in the historical plight of the Indians' treatment by US government").Are these the events that Indians would put on a timeline of their own history?

I am surprised that SLJ calls this book fair and objective. The term "squaw" is used throughout the history whenever the author is referring to a woman, and men are "braves."Throughout the book, Indians are blamed for their own deaths, and whites are portrayed as their wise protectors.Indians died because they were stupid or greedy. To me, it was a little like Jerry Falwell or whoever it was saying that gay people got AIDS because they were sinners.

I would give this book one star, but unfortunately, there isn't a lot published on this subject that is accessible for juveniles. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Simply, and with great humanity, The Eradication of Smallpox tells the story of smallpox - it's origins, the horror of the disease, and the millions of people killed or disfigured by it. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it is estimated that one out of every ten people died from the disease; some say one out of every seven. Smallpox attacked very young children in particular.
The story progresses with the practice of variolation, the life of Edward Jenner who first proposed 'vaccination' with cow pox vaccine (little James Phipps was the first person ever vaccinated in this way), the years of debate about the efficacy of this novel method, and the later worldwide initiatives to rid the planet of this horrific disease. In 1979, the story culminates in the only total eradication of an infectious disease that mankind has ever accomplished. This year celebrates the 20th anniversary of this momentous achievement.
In the intervening years, debate has raged about what we should do with the remaining smallpox viral stocks. Do we destroy them, so they can't fall into the hands of bioterrorists, or do we maintain them, in case they may be of use in some unexpected way, for therapeutic purposes? These questions are thoroughly discussed in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eradication of Smallpox
More a biography and canonization of Edward Jenner than a comprehensive examination of the eradication of smallpox, _The Eradication of Smallpox; Edward Jenner and The First and Only Eradication of a Human Infectious Disease_ is, nevertheless, a useful text and a pleasant read.

While Herve Bazin does apply necessary attention to the various factors that lent themselves to the development of a smallpox vaccine and the eventual elimination of the disease from humanity, the book places heavy emphasis on the contribution of Edward Jenner to the process. There can be no doubt that Jenner's contribution was significant and should in no way be dismissed. In this regard, _The Eradication of Smallpox_ is a thorough examination of his life and influence. The work by other's to achieve the only instance of the complete eradication of a human infectious disease could, however, have been treated more fully.

_The Eradication of Smallpox_ is worth picking up if only for its discussion of Jenner's life, an important component of the history of smallpox. A more complete study of smallpox, however, would require further reading. ... Read more

For somenoe searching for information on biological and chemical agents, this book efficiently informs the reader.I feel much more secure with my new found knowledge.Well written.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yawn!!!
What a boring book. Most all of this information can be found on the internet for free. This book is just another example of the hysteria imposed on citizens of this country. We will likely never be exposed to these agents and are probably more likely to die in our sleep from boredom due to reading this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars informative but not a do it yourself at home book
I got this book because I was curious about the symptoms of exposure to the various agents listed and interested in treatment of a victim.
For your money you get descriptions of 27 different things you really do not want to get exposed to, symptoms, treatment and prevention are also mentioned. Drugs and dosages for each subject are listed (most of this stuff the private citizen can't get ahold of anywhere, some of it would be hard for most Doctors to find.), some of it is administered by injection, some orally and some by intravenous drip.
There are pretty extensive reference lists at the end of each chapter (John Q. Public won't have any access to most of it)and Q&A tests for the reader.
Not really suited for the average person but aimed at trained medical people. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Practical Guide to controling Smallpox and Cholera
This is actually two books in one:Smallpox, Cholera. Both are practical for field medicine and control efforts.

This book represents the last practical knowledge for treating Smallpox casualties. It was writtentowards the termination of the Smallpox Eradication Program (SEP).Detailspractical laboratory diagnosis, casualty treatment and convalescence, control efforts, and technical features of the poxviridea (ie dose).Itrepresents the state of knowledge for treating smallpox casualties fromexperienced physicians. This knowledge does not exist today, as no knownSmallpox casualties have existed since about 1977.This is an importanttext in terms of BW, as Smallpox (and related agents such as monkeypox), had been weaponized by the former Soviet Union, and this technology hadbeen successfully transfered to many of its client States (ie North Korea,China, Iraq). The possibility that Smallpox could be reintroduced doesexist, and in such a case...this book should be consulted.

The Cholerasection is also practical, but has been reproduced by many other autherswith similar medical experience.Cholera is still prevallent throughoutthe world today, and has been made a near non-event by rehydration therapy, which has reduced the case fatality rate to under 1%. ... Read more
