5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource on fear
As a psychologist specializing in treating fears and phobias, I found this book really interesting. The author is highly acclaimed in psychological circles to do with anxiety. The book is unique in that it could be used both by therapists and the general public. It's easy to read style and also being set out in a simple alphabetical format, would be helpful in diagnosing patients, and also make for great read for the everyday person in understanding more about the amazing world of fears and phobias, a topic that affects us all.

Anthony Gunn, psychologist and author of Fear Is Power: Turn Your Fears Into Success

5-0 out of 5 stars tremendous resource!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Multi-purpose Referancnce Book
While I am not a professional in this feild I have found this book remarkably help full in in understanding what these human behaviours are, the theories behind them, some of the medications that are/have been usedin some cases and a few of the clinical studies that have been done in thisfeild.

The material is written in laymens terns and is arrangedalphabtically. It would be of assistance to anyone wanting a betterunderstanding of the feild or then student who is just starting theirstudies in college in this feild.

In my case the book has been and stillis used in a most unusal way.I am referee for war gaming and havesuccessfully used this referance with my players to prevent"perfect" characters from existing. The players in turn becomeso drawned to the book they wind up reading it and learning about thiswhole area!

This book would have recieved 5 stars except for the factthat the material is all listed as one listing: clinical, definitions, andPharmacology (sp?).The book would have been better off as one book withseveral distinct sections. ... Read more

Product Description
A story about a boy learning to manage his fears of social situations and criticism. He uses the acronym BRAVE, which stands for be ready and victory's easy; to plan ahead for difficult situations at school and home.
Back Cover: Danny, a fifth grader, is bombarded with real and imagined problems. As if school itself wasn't stressful enough, a long speech is required, which feels impossible to him. The only way to get out of giving the speech is to win the science contest. When he's paired with Jack, the goof-off kid in class, he's doomed. Bus stop terrors, lunchtime woes, and dealing with his mean older brother add to his stress. Then disaster strikes! His usual coping strategies are no longer working. What will he do? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Victory for within
Reviewed by Matthew Feliciano (age 8) for Reader Views (11/08)

"BRAVE" is about a boy named Danny. He has trouble with a lot of things at school and with life.He is ten-years-old, but age doesn't matter because he has the same problems a lot of kids have. His problems were that whenever he had a test or something, he either had a headache, or had a stomachache and tried to stay home from school. He got bullied a lot and was pretty much afraid of everything. One day, his teacher said that they had to give a speech and the only way to get out of giving the speech was to win the science fair.Danny was really looking forward to being able to get out of the speech and was certain he would be able to win the science fair.

Danny was paired for the science project with the class clown, Jack.Jack invited Danny to come over to his house and work on the project with Jack's grandpa. He doesn't want to go but his mom forces him to because he has trouble making new friends. When he gets there, Jack's grandpa tells him something that helped him a lot.Grandpa tells Danny to be BRAVE: Be Ready and Victory is Easy.Jack's grandpa noticed that Danny was shy and that is why he told him about BRAVE.The characteristics of BRAVE are something that helped Grandpa as a kid and he thinks this will help Danny deal with things.

With the technique that Grandpa showed Danny, Danny was able to be ready for tests and other things in life that scared him. For example, he wrote the explanation for BRAVE on a piece of paper to remind himself of what to do.He used this when his brother was being mean and instead of losing his cool, Danny said "So" or "Whatever" and didn't let his brother get to him.The more he used BRAVE, the happier he became. With the technique, he went on to work with Jack and win the science fair.

I would recommend "BRAVE: Be Ready and Victory is Easy" by Marjie Braun Knudsen and Jenne R. Henderson, PhD, for anybody who has trouble in their life.I know that I have some struggles that are similar to Danny's and reading this book helped give me a new way to deal with things. This book was written to help and teach kids, but instead of sounding like a grownup telling you what to do, this book read just like a regular story with a regular kid showing the way.Teachers and counselors at schools would also benefit from this book, too.I liked it a lot and am going to bring it to share with my class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book to read with my little boy!
This book was great. My son had many similar fears as the boy in the story, so he was able to relate. This book helped us find something that worked and my son has been able to do many things previously impossible.

Would definitely reccommend for anybody with a young child that experiences frequent anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where was this book when I was a kid?!
I initially read this book with the eyes of a fifth-grader but the universal message of being prepared for the eventuality of stressful situations and having the tools needed to get through them is a lesson anyone could relate to!Danny is believable as are the situations he encounters. The authors do a great job of covering a multitude of 'worries';surely any child will recognize theirs in these pages. I sure wish I had these tools when I was a child and I will actually be giving this book to my still-anxious nineteen year old college student to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars BRAVE: Be Ready and Victory's Easy
Whether opportunistically or with some forethought, people have made and used tools through the millennia. We see evidence of this today in technological innovations that literally have changed the face of the Earth. Yet, we have lagged in developing tools that contribute to what has come to be known as emotional intelligence. The engaging story about a boy named Danny as told in BRAVE makes a contribution to the toolkit for dealing with social anxiety. Danny has challenges in fifth grade, when he learns tools for dealing with both difficult people and uncomfortable situations. He then takes steps to put the tools to use. These are lessons I wish for every child. ... Read more

Product Description
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a remarkably common disorder that causes severe disruptions in daily life. However, despite growing literature specific aetiological factors underpinning SAD are still relatively unknown. Cognitive theories propose that memories of past experiences and biased schematic processing influence the development and maintenance of the disorder. This book aimed to explore aetiological factors underlying social anxiety, using an experimental design comprising projective and self-report measures. Five early memories were cued to activate early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) in participants with high social anxiety. Results suggested that schemas were activated by specific people or events in memory and thus offers a new experimental design for future research in this area. Defectiveness/ shame schemas cued by school memories and failure schemas probed by memories of a social situation predicted social anxiety although regression analyses failed to reach statistical significance. Nevertheless, due to a small sample size and non-clinical population, these findings could be considered preliminary evidence that lie in the expected direction. ... Read more

Description:
Poor working conditions may be an important source of stress and may therefore contribute to the development of depressive and anxiety disorders. Social support may act as a buffer and protect against the development of depression or anxiety in the face of poor working conditions. With longitudinal data from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS), the effect of working conditions and social support on the incidence of depressive and anxiety disorders was examined among 2646 working men and women, aged 18 through 65 years. Three dimensions of self reported working conditions were assessed: psychological demands, decision latitude and job security. Social support was assessed through validated scales for daily emotional support. About 10.5% of working women and 4.6% among working men developed an incident depressive and/or anxiety disorder over 2 years. Psychological demands predicted the incidence of depressive and anxiety disorders in both men and women (RR per score increase=2.29, 95% CI: 1.44-3.63), whereas decision latitude and job security did not. Social support protected against the incidence of depressive and anxiety disorders. This effect was stronger for men compared to women. Social support did not buffer the unfavorable mental effect of working conditions. Women were more likely to report low levels of decision latitude, whereas men reported higher psychological demands. Working conditions did not explain sex differences in the incidence of depressive and anxiety disorders. ... Read more

Product Description
Social anxiety in childhood is the focus of research in three psychological research traditions: developmental studies emphasizing dispositional constructs such as behavioral inhibition and its biological substrates; development investigations emphasizing affective-behavioral characterists (anxious solitude/withdrawal) and their parent-child and peer-relational precursors and moderators; and clinical investigations of social anxiety disorder (also known as social phobia) emphasizing a variety of etiolofical factors, diagnosis, and treatment.

In this volume, we review and identify gaps in extant evidence that permit (or impeded) researchers from the three traditions to translate their core definitional constructs in ways that would facilitate the use of one another's research. Topics include:

  1. Conceptual relations between anxiety disorder and fearful temperament
  2. Factors contributing to the emergence of anxiety among behaviorally inhibited children: the role of attention
  3. Familial and temperamental risk factors for social anxiety disorder
  4. Anxious solitude, withdrawal and anxiety disorders; conceptualization, co-occurrence, and peer processes
  5. parents, peers and social withdrawal in childhood

Intimately connected to this translation of constructs is a discussion of the conceptualization of core states (anxiety, wariness, solitude) and their manifestations across childhood, as well as corresponding methodologies. Extant research is analyzed from an integrative, overarching framework of developmental psychopathology in which children's adjustment is conceptualized as multiply determined such that children who share certain risks may display diverse adjustment over time (multifinality) and children with diverse risks may develop shared adaptational difficulties over time (equifinality). Finally, key themes for future integrative research are identified and implications for preventative and early intervention in childhood social anxiety are discussed.

This is the 127th volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. The mission of New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in the field of child and adolescent development. Each volume focuses on a specific "new direction" or research topic, and is edited by an expert or experts on that topic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and effective self-help book
This book was useful in helping me understand my discomfort with public speaking and attending meetings with lots of unknown people. It offered step-by-step exercises to manage these situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource!
i found this book to be really helpful.i also did the mindfulness based stress reduction program and they reinforced each other.after a doctor told me i showed signs of social anxiety disorder, i went into a funk and became terribly afraid of having people to my home.then i read this book and started following some of the techniques suggested.i realised i needed to have people over again.the way to do this would be not to get into any anticipatory anxiety.so i just started to do this. it was helpful. a few months later a family event demanded that i have party.....this was my top listed fear! i decided to be really strict with anxious thoughts and stopped them immediately i thought them.i also focussed on pen and paper planning, and a friendhelped me with planning, prep, and hostessing.i was able to host the party without flipping into anxiety and it was successful beyond my expectations.i have to thank this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Triumph Over Shyness: Very Informative
This book was very insightful and gave many opportunities to practice the new skills that were learned in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Triumph Over Shyness
Undoubtely the best treatment of this subject I have ever read.Anyone who thinks they may suffer from social anxiety should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory book
I bought this for myself and also for my parents to read to understand my social anxiety. It's a good "first" book to get an idea of what you need to do to overcome shyness and self-esteem issues. It presents the topic in clear, simple English without much of the medical mumbo-jumbo. However, I don't expect anyone to truly "Triumph over shyness" just by reading this book. However, I still recommend this book to those that have just decided to do something about their shyness or social anxiety disorder. ... Read more

Description:
Psychological group treatments, such as behavioral or cognitive-behavioral therapy, are generally effective interventions for social phobia. However, a substantial number of individuals discontinue these treatments prematurely. Participant attrition can threaten the validity of treatment outcome studies if attrition during therapy does not occur randomly. In order to examine this issue, we studied 133 individuals with a principal diagnosis of social phobia who initiated a 12-week behavioral or cognitive-behavioral group treatment for social phobia. Thirty-four participants discontinued therapy prematurely. These dropouts were compared to treatment completers in demographic characteristics, Axis I and II psychopathology, and their attitude toward treatment. The results only showed a small difference between treatment completers and dropouts in their attitude toward treatment: dropouts rated the treatment rationale as less logical than completers at the beginning of treatment. No other differences between dropouts and completers were observed. Therefore, dropouts are unlikely to present a serious threat to the external validity of treatment outcome studies for social phobia. ... Read more
