Product Description

This lucidly written guide presents an innovative approach for treating somatization disorder and related problems, such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome. The authors' program integrates cognitive-behavioral techniques with strategies to build emotional self-awareness and interventions to help patients understand and alter their illness behavior. Systematic yet flexible, it is supported by controlled clinical research. The book reviews the conceptual underpinnings of the approach, discusses its ongoing testing and refinement, and offers clear-cut guidelines for assessment and treatment. Special features include illustrative case material, many pointers for practice, and reproducible appendices that provide a 10-session mini-manual and helpful handouts and forms.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage "Science"
These quacks give ridiculous explanations and "treatment" for what they call "medically unexplained" symptoms and somatization. The only problem is that they are medically explained. For example there are approximately 4,000 articles in peer reviewed medical journals showing frank physical pathology (disease) in ME (aka CFS).

1-0 out of 5 stars So not worth the read
Since most people who write soma books don't actually suffer from Soma disorders, taking what they say to heart can be difficult. Lucky for you, you've got a real live sufferer right here telling you it's not worth the read. When I was diagnosed with soma two years ago, my life flipped upside down. I went from being a promising, happy-go-luck college student to a depressed alcoholic on the verge of breakdown. I lost every friend I had, lived in constant pain, and prayed for the end. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (or CBT) was my first avenue of choice for treatment, and unfortunatly, it was also the least effective. I don't fault the author for his one sided CBT approach, but the fact that SOMA has general prognosis of "very poor", coupled with a life expectancy of about 35 for sufferers, makes it almost pointless to read up on and explore. Let's just be honest, if you've got Soma, you probably won't live very long. It's not because the disorder kills you, no, it's sicker than that. Your lifestyle escape will do you in; the alcohol abuse, the drug abuse, the suicide, these are all norms for people with Soma. You don't live, you exist, and those who don't actually suffer are rarely qualified to write books or distribute information. AVOID this and all other Soma books UNLESS THEY ARE WRITTEN BY SOMEONE WITH SOMA!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
This is a great book that gives a nice, research-based approach to the treatment of Somatization in patients in primary care. However, due to the nature of the book, it is very much based on a one-sided approach (CBT) and provides limited information on other methods of treatment. ... Read more

Quack Gregory Lamberty outlines somatization disorders and "medically unexplained" symptoms. The only problem is that they are medically explained. 5-0 out of 5 stars Applying it to School Practice
I'm a speech pathologist who works with teens with Asperger's Syndrome in a public school. We see a lot of somaticization in our students, and it is often used as a way to escape less preferred activities.I and the other teachers need to know how to view this condition and how to set limits around the behaviors we see, *without* causing harm or ignoring what could be a serious condition.Lamberty's book helps us with that.He explains how somaticization is defined and how it manifests itself. He gives an excellent explanation of the kinds of treatment that have been shown to work. This is particularly helpful, because it teaches us the "active ingredients" in any successful therapy. That means we can incorporate those active ingredients in our own relationships with our students. Finally, Lamberty's books contains short clinical vignettes about actual patients, which is very instructive because it shows how to set appropriate limits. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Learn how a patient’s behavior can factor into the prognosis of medically unexplainable illness!

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes examines the link between mental illness and physical syndromes that lack organic disease explanations, including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, premenstrual dysphoria, irritable bowel, and Gulf War illness.

The author has evaluated the best research work of the past 20 years to determine the association between psychopathology and functional illness, the biological gradient between somatic and psychological symptoms, and the manifestations of dysfunctional coping.

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes challenges recent conceptualizations of functional somatic syndromes as brain disorders connected to affective spectrum disorder, serotonin deficiency, cerebral hypoperfusion or abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal function and highlights the importance of abnormal illness behavior, sexual victimization, and maladaptive coping for the production and maintenance of these disorders.

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes explores observations on the neurobiology and the personality abnormalities of patients made from structured data collected over a period of several years. It describes modern perceptions of functional somatic syndromes and how they have evolved into a tightly knit family of self-standing syndromes with a common core. The book examines the correlation between the burden of psychopathology and the physical features of these illnesses; reviews advances made in the appraisal of the neuroanatomy, neuropsychology, and neurochemistry of functional syndromes; and focuses on the connection between measurable dimensions of personality, coping, and illness behavior and the prognosis of medically unexplainable illnesses.

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes examines:

psychiatric morbidity brain perfusion

post-traumatic stress in Gulf War illness the spectrum of mood disorders the hypothalamatic-pituitary-adrenal axis the sexual victimization of patients and much more!

The Psychopathology of Functional Somatic Syndromes is an essential resource for psychiatrists and psychologists working in outpatient practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book provides and excellent explanation of illnesses that are difficult to define as well as classify. A must read for anyone interested in psychosomatics

1-0 out of 5 stars Dusty history. Achooo.
Dusty history. Achooo.

Nothing new here, just the recitation of the centuries-old mantra that any illness that medical doctors don't know everything about is automatically a psychiatric disorder.

Older theories of "bad" air and "evil spirits" as causative agents of disease have given way to more modern theories of "mass hysteria" spread by the media and Internet.

Parkinson's, diabetes, MS, ulcers and polio have all been declared mental disorders at some point. Children with polio were once beaten for their "behavioral" refusal to move.

As a woman, I found reading Dr. Manu's book akin to reading a first-hand account of childbirth written by a man who has never given birth in his life. Observations: yes. Speculative conclusions: oh yes. Irrelevant "facts": yes.

As a fairytale icon to "can you believe they used to think that," Manu's book is a gem worthy of a smile or two.

Readers expecting current biological research will be disappointed.

Like many people who do not wish to have their theories disproven, Dr. Manu completely ignores the decades-old World Health Organization listing of chronic fatigue syndrome under neurological disorders (ICD 10 G93.3) and fibromyalgia under rheumatological soft tissue disorders - M79.0. Good grief, even health insurance giant Blue Cross/Blue Shield lists them as organic disorders.

As has been the case throughout medical history, the advancement of imperfect knowledge lies in exacting scientific study not the repetition of myth. Doctors don't know what causes cancer, multiple sclerosis, or migraines, but the lack of knowledge doesn't mean "imaginary." The rationale that nothing further can be learned about organic illness is laughable in the current age of scientific advancements. Medical doctors can and should do better than trying to talk patients out of organic illness.

Medically unexplained illnesses are among the most common disorders in primary medical care today. Accordingly, there has been a recent surge of interest in the physiology of such illnesses as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and multiple chemical sensitivity. But biomedical models can only go so far toward understanding a group of painful and often frustrating symptoms. Author Susan K. Johnson surveys the most recent research on how psychological, social, and physiological factors may interact and contribute to the development of symptoms. This volume will appeal to both psychologists and health care professionals interested in more fully understanding the interaction between mind and body in medically unexplained illness. ... This book is about the nature of meaning, the relationship of meaning to the body, and the way in which meaning expresses itself in our health or lack of it. In another way it is about the conjunction of mind, body, and spirit.

In a more practical perspective, the message is that meaning-full disease does make sense, that we do have a sound basis for a holism that includes meaning, and that we had better sort out our models of healthcare if we want to be the sorts of clinicians and healers our patients and clients deserve. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Mind-Body Medicine
I'm proud to be the first to review Brian Bloom's book for Amazon.com.I met Brian in New Zealand at a conference sponsored by the Mind-Body Trust.I was excited by his presentation and expected the book to be equally enticing.I was not disappointed.Within medicine, a number of us are puzzling over how disease develops and how healing occurs. This puzzling is outside of the conventional biomedical paradigm which renders all by genetics as random events with which we should not be concerned.Brian's book helped me to see how the language that we use about our illness arises from our bodies.Language is not just a mental phenomenon but is produced through out bodies which speak the lanugage of metaphor. The language we use is no accident and provides clues for our understanding of the life events associated with illness. The concepts are hard to quickly describe, for we are used to separating mind, body, spirit, life into different categories.Brian teaches us to appreciate the absence of separation and to contemplate a unified mindbodyspirit that is embedded in a social world.I am very grateful to Brian for his insights and recommend this book most highly to anyone interested in narrative medicine or the mind-body-spirit relationship. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Abnormal Illness Behaviour describes not only the problems of patients with bodily symptoms for which no adequate organic cause can be found, but also those who deny the presence of disease which is obvious to others. The former, regarded as manifesting ‘somatisation but often labelled pejoratively as hypochondriacs, hysterics and even malingerers, have a different perception of their health problems to that of the doctor and this often leads to misunderstanding and unhelpful emotional reactions in medical professionals interacting with these patients. There is growing interest in the phenomenon of ‘somatisation and its causes, which now forms an important research field within the disciplines of psychosomatic medicine, consultation—liaison (‘general hospital) psychiatry, community psychiatry and general practice (primary care medicine). This book describes the nature of various forms of abnormal illness behaviour from a clinical perspective. It provides an historical and theoretical background and a general introduction to the early recognition and management of abnormal illness behaviour. It describes for those in the medical, nursing and health care professions the skills needed to identify abnormal illness behaviour in its various manifestations, how to offer appropriate care and when to refer patients for specialised psychiatric care. Written by an author well known for his introduction of the term ‘abnormal illness behaviour and his research in the fields of hypochondriasis, psychiatric aspects of pain and the development and application of the ‘illness behaviour questionnaire, this book will be of immense value to general practitioners, physicians, surgeons, neurologists, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and anaesthetists associated with pain clinics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Abnormal Illness Behaviour - A new perspective.
Issy Pilowsky has introduced a concept which provides a new approach to the diagnosis and management of conditions such as hypochondriasis,'hysteria' and somatoform pain disorder. He also describesand discusses abnormal denial of illness. Since its first appearance in1969 this concept has generated fruitful research and improvedunderstanding of a complex and controversial cluster of conditions, whichoccupy a borderland area between psychiatry and general medicine. Thedescriptions of the clinical casses add enormously to the value of thisbook, which is extraordinarily readable.

"Andnow, this whole corpus of thinking is set out-imperishably-in Issy's recentbook.......the monograph "Abnormal Illness Behaviour". Anyone whowants to practise medicine-in any specialty-needs to carry in their headwhat has been set out in this volume. Product Description
There is currently a great deal of interest in patients with functional somatic symptoms--physical complaints which are not explained by organic findings--but until now there has been little information available on the principles and practical methods of their treatment. This book covers all the key topics in the management of somatic disorders, and will be invaluable both as a comprehensive reference and as a practical clinical guide. The authors have included material on the problems specific to children and the elderly, the organization of service provision, as well as the clinical syndromes characteristic of somatic diorders such as hypochondriasis, chronic pain, chronic fatique, and low back pain.

Treatment of Functional Somatic Symptoms is the first comprehensive, authoritative and practical guide on the management of a wide variety of medically unexplained symptoms encountered frequently in all areas of primary and hospital care. The book will be useful to clinicians and to research workers as a source book and a clinical manual. ... Read more

Product Description
... Read more

Product Description
In this volume, a child psychiatrist and a paediatrician, both with wide clinical and research experience, present a current view of somatization disorders in children and how a multi-factorial approach is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Following this analysis, emphasis is placed on inter-disciplinary teamwork, and it is hoped that physicians, nurses, psychologists and other professionals who deal with families in which a child has a somatic complaint will benefit from this book. This series is intended to fill the perceived gap in texts on family psychology - still not a major part of the undergraduate curriculum - by pulling together material from research and clinical studies which is scattered amongst various journals. The inter-disciplinary approach will be maintained throughout the series. ... Read more
