5-0 out of 5 stars great information
this book is very detailed! it is wonderful but can be a bit overwhelming at first. it is worth the money

3-0 out of 5 stars Still on the fence
Not at all an easy or fun read for the beginning/CF/intermediate clinician! The material contained within is invaluable but it's not a 'cover to cover' read.I generally use it as a reference tool. Most of the information is very dry.I preferred 'Motor Speech Disorders' by Freed, which was more engaging for me and came w/ a DVD.Good to have on the shelf but not more than that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motor Speech Disorders by Joseph Duffy
Book arrived quickly and in excellent condition and is a wonderful resource for speech-language pathologists working in the field of motor speech disorders.Strongly recommend this resource for graduate level preparation as well as for practicing clinicians.

2-0 out of 5 stars THEY MAY SAY ITS "NEW" from AMAZON BUT ITS NOT
I purchased this book from amazon with the free shipping, the book is suppose to be NEW but the corner of this hardcover book was torn off, some "new" book. What a joke.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best

Product Description

This is the leading text for courses in clinical phonology–thoroughly revised and updated to include the most current and up-to-date information in the field. Even the newly added subtitle, Speech Sound Disorders in Children, reflects recent changes in the field, including new terminology. This classic text does not prescribe a single approach to phonological disorders but rather presents an eclectic perspective on the nature, assessment, and treatment of this communication impairment. The addition of a third author, Peter Flipsen Jr., a highly-recognized scholar in the area of clinical phonology, brings important, new information for readers and fresh perspectives to the text.  Among the many highlights and special features of the sixth edition are: An entire section devoted to the classification of speech sound disorders; The latest information on Childhood Apraxia of Speech, including a detailed discussion of the 2007 ASHA position statement; A revised and updated comprehensive chapter on Normal Development; A full section on measuring clinical change set within the context of evidence-based practice; An outstanding summary of phonological acquisition information written by leading researcher in this area, Sharynne McLeod; Comprehensive coverage of dialects and phonologic characteristics of speakers with first languages other than English, prepared by leading authorities in this area, Brian Goldstein and Aquiles Iglesias; A completely updated chapter on phonological awareness, co-authored by Laura Justice, Gail Gillon, and C. Melanie Schuele; A fully comprehensive and current review of etiological variables, thorough discussion of the assessment of phonologic disorders, and an updated review of broad-based intervention methodologies; and every chapter features introductions, summaries, charts, and graphs to guide learning and aid students’ comprehension. The sixth edition of Articulation and Phonological Disorders: Speech Sound Disorders in Children proves once again its “classic” status, and its rightful place on every speech, language, and hearing clinician’s bookshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
The book was in great shape and made it here safely. The only problems was the sender did not send a receipt paper. Thanks for the book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not an Introductory Guide
There is no doubt that the authors of this text are indeed experts. All concepts have an angular approach and base nearly each written conceptual description with its source, scholarly journal, theorist/investigator or experimental finding.

Sentences are overloaded with information-- there are no fillers and no glaze-over sentences.Any simplistic language that is easily processed in any text for a reader's occassional "breath" are instead substituted with the most technical or clinical term, followed by an overwhelming complexity of language that requires every ounce of concentration and comprehension exercisable.I believe EACH sentence was written with the purpose of leaving someone in complete jaw-dropping awe.

Students opening this book will most likely have encountered the foundational framework for many of the concepts presented and may find just the right amount of challenge and stimulus needed to reactivate their knowledge or expand on it with it's lengthy, thorough, and small-print font. However, I HIGHLY discourage anyone seeking an "introductory guide" or "overview" of articulatory and phonological disorders to begin their studies here.Authors have clearly written this book for the "continuing" student, not the "new" one.Even the introductory chapter is written with the assumption that you have a background in linguistics and/or phonetics. That being said--this book, I imagine, was intended for 4th-year or graduate level study.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced
I found the 5th Edition to be overpriced. The 4th edition offered the same information and much cheaper!

Product Description
Paediatric speech and language therapists are challenged by diminished resources and increasingly complex caseloads. The new edition addresses their concerns. Norms for speech development are given, differentiating between the emergence of the ability to produce speech sounds (articulation) and typical developmental error patterns (phonology). The incidence of speech disorders is described for one UK service providing crucial information for service management.

The efficacy of service provision is evaluated to show that differential diagnosis and treatment is effective for children with disordered speech. Exploration of that data provides implications for prioritising case loads. The relationship between speech and language disorders is examined in the context of clinical decisions about what to target in therapy.

New chapters provide detailed intervention programmes for subgroups of speech disorder: delayed development, use of atypical error patterns, inconsistent errors and development verbal dyspraxia.

The final section of the book deals with special populations: children with cognitive impairment, hearing and auditory processing difficulties. The needs of clinicians working with bilingual populations are discussed and ways of intervention described. The final chapter examines the relationship between spoken and written disorders of phonology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
This book is a must-have for any communication science undergrad or speech-language pathology graduate student! I am currently in my final year of grad school, completing my first internship; and, I sure wish I'd had this during the past few years of coursework. I will definitely be using it as a reference during the rest of my internship and CFY. It will also be very helpful to use whilestudying for the PRAXIS. The book contains definitions, black and white diagrams, as well as very useful reference charts and tables in the back. Well-worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Live Without It (but using 4th edition)
This was the first book I ever purchased in SLP. My prof instructed us to buy for building our professional library. At the time, I thought THANKS A LOT. I thought I had just wasted money on a book I didn't need for the class. Since that time, I have used this book for countless term papers, clinical reports, cross referencing more difficult texts, and looking up spellings regularly. My addition has several developmental charts and testing indexes. My only complaint is that the more medicaly based terminology is missing(ie: the anatomical structures are realy just the greatest hits of the larynx and brain, and I am a bit lost when it comes to none SLP or AUD measures at the hospital rotations). I hope this has been improved for the new edition, but at the same time would hate it to become to cumbersome to use. I am nearing the end of my Masters' and coming up on the Praxis exam. I intend to use this as a way to study across several topics in the field. All in all a GREAT REFERENCE! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Speech, Language and Listening Problems
I read certain portions of this book and thought, "That's it! That's my daughter!" The book explains, in language for those who aren't educators, learning problems and ways to help your child. It helped me to understand the language of the evaluations and intervention that my daughter has had over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good resource
As a mom of a six year old who is experiencing some listening and speech issues, I found this book to be easy to be clear, understandable and easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, informative book.
I originally borrowed this book from the library, and ended up ordering myself a copy so I could highlight pages (which I never do, but the information was so pertinent to my child's condition).I've never felt compelled to write a review before, but wanted to recommend this book highly. This book helped me realize some of my child's issues that two speech and language pathologists did not even mention. It also described the evaluation results and scores in a thorough manner (which the SLPs also neglected to do).It is important for parents to educate themselves so they can be partners in the work their children and speech therapists will undertake. The book lists examples of situations that children with certain disorders/conditions experience (a light bulb went off for me, it was so important to understand how the condition affects my child's experiences). Also, suggestions for helping the parent and teacher work more effectively with the child are included.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Speech, Language & Listening Problems
This book is very informative and easy to read.I would definitely recommend it to parents who wish to have more knowledge about speech disorders in children.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will help you connect the dots
This book is worth $100.Actually, it is priceless. If your child is language delayed, fussy and quirky, more mercurial than his/her peers...this book will help you identify these behaviors and discover the reasons behind your child's actions. Finally, you will understand the communication difficulties your child is experiencing and you will understand why he/she acts as they do.

This book is easy to read. You will recognize your child in the identified behaviors and you will discover that there may be multiple issues. Our child had been diagnosed with intermittent middle-ear fluid by a highly skilled team: ENT, Speech Pathologist and Audiologist. But it was this book that help us pinpoint the other behaviors and discover/address the Auditory Processing issue. Our team was satisfied with the diagnosis of Middle Ear Fluid for our child's language articulation issues...and this book is helping us get our child the help she needs. ... It's an excelente resource for parents that what to learn about speech delays of their children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book
My copy of this book is highlighted, dog eared, and frequently referenced. This book was the first helpful thing I read on APRAXIA outside of medical journals. It's an easy read with a clear set up and is helpful to any parent of a child with speech or language problems. It also presents many useful ideas and information that I have never seen put all in one place (for instance, ALL the positive treatment methods out there).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
We have a son with severe expressive language disorder (apraxia) and this book combines humor and honesty about speech and language disorders. It felt like the author was sitting at my kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee with me and explaining all about my son's condition.A lot of information about how aggressive you need to get with therapy and what kind of therapy will work best for you and your family.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for confused parents
This book is an excellent resource for anyone who has a child with speech and language difficulties. There is an enormous amount of information but it is very well organized, and easy to reference in a hurry. The quotes throughout from parents who have "been there" make you feel like you aren't alone. It's very easy to feel overwhelmed when you first get a diagnosis, but this book helps the process of really understanding what you can do to help your child, and the support that is available.

This guide introduces an oral-motor protocol designed to enhance the child s ability to produce more normal movement patterns. It is accompanied by activities that can be incorporated into the child s daily schedule at home or at school for improved eating and speech development. The suggestions and activities will enable parents and professionals to broaden food varieties in a child s diet, increase a child s ability to accept touch inside and around the mouth, and expand the number of sounds produced by a child. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
My ASD son will be turning 4 soon and his oral motor issues have been one of the greatest challenges we face. I bought this book because I needed more to go on than my instincts. I needed clear understanding of the problems, real explanations about those complex issues, and a precise course of action I can take. This slim book provides ALL that. I am reading it over and over again, and I will continue to do so until I feel comfortable in the knowledge I have gained to then design a program at home that will work best for my child, in which it is appropriate to his age, and in an order and sequence that he is able to follow with the least resistance. I am also keeping in mind that I gotta make it F-U-N. There are terrific suggestions and ideas a-plenty in this book.It was money well spent. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was written for my daughter
I have a 3-1/2 year old daughter who has a diagnosis of PDD-NOS and who has just started seeing an oral motor speech therapist. She has very limited speech and has great difficulty trying to get her words out. She also has a great number of sensory issues and difficuly eating certain foods and textures. This book has really educated me and prepared me for my sessions with the oral motor therapist. And since we only meet with the therapist once a week, this book has really given me some great ideas and questions to ask and suggestions on how to carry out our treatments at home. This is really a very informative and useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for therapists, families, and teachers
This book provides easy to understand information for parents, teachers, and other professionals working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum. It is important for people to understand that there are steps that need to be accomplished prior to attempting and succeeding at the next step. This book really opened my mind to understanding the difficulties involved with oral motor deficits and how many areas it can impact.

Teachers ESPECIALLY need to understand how sensory issues affect development and ability to function - please please please read this!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The book covers helping the child eat, dental hygiene, speech therapy, and sentence formation, among other daily challenges
Many things that are simply elementary to most children prove to be a challenge to the autistic. "Improving Speech & Eating Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: An Oral-Motor Program for Home and School" is a guide full of suggestions for those who care for children with autism. Establishing these skills early, like normal children, is vital to establishing them for life. The book covers helping the child eat, dental hygiene, speech therapy, and sentence formation, among other daily challenges. Any parent or caretaker of an autistic child needs "Improving Speech & Eating Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders".

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Feeding Issues for Kids with Autism
I cannot emphasize enough the hope this book has given me for my 12 year old son. This book explains what an oral-motor program is with case summaries of boys with autism who have school programs. The items to use and how to do it are all detailed within the pages of this book.

It is described in detail what the various techniques will achieve for the child with feeding issues and lack of imitation or initiating speech sounds. This should be done both in the home and school and can be practiced with teacher, therapist or aide at school and be a program for all students. This can easily be adapted into the school schedule and photos can help the nonverbal child know what is expected.

I highly recommend this book and wish it was around 9 or 10 years ago when my child was younger.I liked that the photos and case summaries are of boys in the age range of my son who is 12.There is help for the child that stuffs food in their mouth, and cannot tolerate new foods. This is a quick read of only 121 pages. You will need a highlighter with this book. ...
