5-0 out of 5 stars I am grateful to have discovered Speech Class Rules by Ronda M. Wojcicki.
As a clinical fellow, I seek all avenues to ensure that my students are receiving the quality services they deserve. I am grateful to have discovered Speech Class Rules by Ronda M. Wojcicki. This wonderful book is the answer to our students inner pleas, "Why me?" It also serves as a source for parents and professionals who desire an understanding of our realm of practice.

Through humorous and engaging scenarios, the author demonstrates that each student has individualized goals to achieve. Wojcicki portrays a sense of camaraderie between the students as they develop the awareness that each one is aspiring towards becoming a better communicator through an experience that is lots of fun!

I highly recommend this book to all clinical fellows and speech therapist, parents, educators, and anyone who comes in contact with children!

5-0 out of 5 stars SLP says finally, a great book to explain speech therapy!
What a great resource for speech-language pathologists, teachers, and parents!Kids always wonder, "What is happening in the speech therapy room?"What a great book to explain it to everyone!Helps eliminate stigma, embarrassment, and questions.Great job, Ronda.I will use this, for sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps ease anxiety
Uncertainty and fear of the unknown always makes it harder to undertake something, even if that something is going to ultimately provide a benefit.Speech Class Rules lets children "practice" going to speech class and delivers a very positive message of achievement-- a great way to encourage children preparing to attend speech therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars All schools must make this book avaiable to students
Thank you, Rhonda Wojicicki, for writing this book.It is a tool every school needs to offer its students and their families. There are many children who benefit from speech therapy. This upbeat, colorful book takes the stigma out of speech therapy and gives children a new platform from which to build confidence.

I would like to see every school offer this book to its students and families.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a humorous, yet informative way to introduce kids to speech class!
I loved this book!!! I am the mother of 3 children and a former teacher. I would recommend this to everyone. It could be used by parents, speech therapists, teachers and anyone else interested in introducing kids to what actually goes on in a speech class. As a teacher, I watched kids go in and out of my classroom for speech. The other children never understood WHY and even made fun of them for leaving. I wish I could have utilized this book to explain EXACTLY what speech class is all about.
As a parent, all of my kids (8,6 and 2) have enjoyed the silliness of the story...yet I feel they were informed of different special needs some children require. It is a great ice breaker for speech therapists as well. Once kids see how fun and easy the lessons can be-I think their fears about being "different" or being pulled from class, will change.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
I had to get the book for a class in grad school and I think this is one of the easiest book to read with great forms you can copy and use while providing therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Resource
Should have on your SLP shelf. Yes, the cover is thin; not the greatest. I store it in a small case. A keeper that you will use. Therapy ideas, stimulus materials, sample reports and letters, some anatomy diagrams (good), and much more - most of which is also on a CD for usage. I felt it was worth the cost. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Great assessment tool!
This book provides great direction for beginning, intermediate and semi-advanced speech-language clinicians. In addition, the accompanying CD with clinic forms is excellent. I highly recommend this book. It's well worth the cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for all clinicians working with adults and children.
A very helpful resource for assessment (language, articulation, voice, stuttering, neurogenic etc.) It has various lists of norms and sample reports. I found the additions to this version very useful. The CD ROM for printable forms (and some are also editable) makes my life so much easier. The pictures and diagrams for testing and training are colorful.I would recommend this product to any clinician - new or experienced.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and practical
The material in this book is very easy to comprehend. It can benefit both parents and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful resource
This resource has a variety of valuable information for working with children with VPI or a cleft palate. It covers from birth through childhood.A must for clinicians who work with this type of population.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenally helpful for treatment
This book is a great resource for therapist's working with cleft palate, and VPI. It is not designed to be a resource for parents, but a functional guide to provide therapy that works. What therapist isn't looking to make progress? This book makes even the most difficult clients make progress. It is a wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars MOM of a 4-month old baby with cleft of the soft palate
I'm a Mom of a 4-month old baby with a cleft.I also have a M.S. in speech-pathology.(What are the odds?) :)I found this book to be really helpful, because while I attended one of the leading institutions for graduate school, we only had 1 class on Craniofacial Disorders, most of which focused on diagnosis and not on how to do therapy with people with cleft. If you're a therapist reading this review, then you'll appreciate this book for the easy-to-recognize discussion of all aspects of speech, how articulation and VPI both may be affected with the presence of cleft (many folks think it's just hypernasality and nasal emission, when actually artic can become a big factor). This is just one example. The book highlights the importance of early intervention, even when surgery to correct the cleft hasn't been done, citing the importance of learning appropriate behaviors for speech, even in the absence of "normal" anatomy. (Therapy after surgery, then, can be much more successful, and kiddos aren't learning inappropriate compensatory strategies in the meantime.)There are chapters for doing therapy with all ages, including what kinds of things you can do with an infant who is not yet speaking. That was great for my family. If you're a PARENT of a child with cleft, there may be some things that don't readily make sense (sideview diagrams of the oral cavity during production of different speech targets), but most of the book is still going to be an excellent resource. It will teach you the logic of the TYPES of speech issues that can accompany speech with cleft, how these can develop and why they might develop, what you can expect, and what you can help do about it.I am a big believer in the more you learn, the more an advocate you become for your own child. And the more a part of the therapy "team" you become.Instead of just "taking your child to see the therapist", you become the "at home therapist" who can read, understand, ask questions, and implement good at-home behaviors that can help make a few weekly hours of professional therapy stretch beyond the walls of the "office", and into the child's everyday environment. Finally, if you're a new parent of a child with a cleft, please feel free to write me.There are few parents that were easy for me to talk to when my baby was born with this issue. Feeding is difficult in the beginning and it can feel scary and foreign, and far from the breastfeeding and closeness that you were imagining, especially if food is coming out the nose like it was for us, etc. It was a really vulnerable time for me and my family and therefore, I'd like to give other new parents someone to talk to who understands what you're going through and can maybe help with some ideas. You can write me at sternsmk@hotmail.com or mparker@plato.com:)Meredith

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source for Therapists Working with VPI
This book gave our therapist a clear set of instructions for working with my daughter, who has VPI and a submucus cleft palate.Using these techniques, after over a year of traditional therapy, within six months of three sessions a week this therapist had my daughter saying most of her sounds. It gave my baby her voice so she could tell me with words what she had, up until then, been telling me with gestures and tone of voice.

If your child has any leakage of air into his or her nose when speaking, this book is a must read. Read it yourself and pass it to your speech therapist. My daughter is now in a position where they can evaluate what, if any, surgical intervention will help with her speech. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for students in the field of communication disorders.
I have just completed my undergraduate degree in communication disorders and will soon begin graduate school for speech language pathology. This is the best book I have found for students in a speech language pathology program who will soon be working with clients. It is the only book I have found that takes theoretical knowledge and transforms it into a step-by-step instructional program for working with people with communication disorders. I believe this book should be a part of every college curriculum. Thanks for a practical, easy-to-read book that is full of strategies! I will now feel much more prepared when I begin to work with clients. This book would also be helpful for practicing SLP's.

2-0 out of 5 stars didn't like this book
I am finishing up my CFY in Speech Pathology. This is one of several post-grad school books that I bought in preparation for my job. I haven't found it useful at all. I use the Hedge's Guides (Treatment and Diagnosis) and several of my grad school textbooks. I also like the "Source" (Source for Aphasia, etc.) books.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK but NOT worth full price
This book will be most helpful for graduate students who are looking for visual examples of the therapy process.Practicing professionals will find this extremely basic.I truly feel that the publisher is charging too much for this book - $40 is more appropriate in my opinion.I sold mine as a used copy after owning it for a year and only reading it once during my CFY.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it!
I would like to recommend this book to any beginning clinician. While obtaining my graduate degree I've been a little aprehensive towards my success in teaching and helping those who need speech and language services. This book gives gives examples of how normal therapy sessions can be executed and there's a wealth of information on the fundamentals of early intervention.A very good investment... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Books Falling Apart!
Hi Graduate Students,

Isn't it a shame that we are paying hundreds of dollars for textbooks that fall apart when you read them, well, this is one of them. I love the book itself - an excellent book in content. The producer of the physical book itself is doing a poor job of manufacturing. I did call the publisher about this issue. This seems to be a trend in graduate textbooks. Just my thoughts, we are paying too much for shabby treatment.

A clear, concise, and approachable writing style helps students understand neurology in the context of speech-language pathology. Supplemented by a wealth of new illustrations and learning features for students, this new edition helps to demystify this often-daunting subject matter. The 5th edition also introduces a new author, Dr. Richard Adler, who brings a fresh perspective and an impressive clinical background.

  • The perfect reader-friendly introduction to the neurology of speech and language
  • Emphasizes the neurological mechanisms involved in communication disorders in children and adults

  • A new two-color design enhances chapter organization, and the larger size offers a better image presentation with convenient lay-flat reading.
  • Approximately 225 illustrations - nearly three times that of the previous edition - are highlighted with color to clarify this complex area of study.
  • Improved organization enhances understanding by following a logical flow of information, with speech- and language-specific chapters following a natural progression that more clearly delineates the adult and pediatric content.
  • A new chapter, "Central Language Mechanism and Learning," expands the information about how the brain learns - a natural way to introduce language disorders and provide a solid foundation for study.
  • More information on pediatric syndromes and disorders reflects an increased emphasis on this area within neurology.
  • New case studies in the clinically oriented chapters provide students with realistic clinical applications.
  • Key vocabulary highlighted within chapters and each term is defined in a handy back-of-book glossary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
This book was a suggested to me from a expert Speech Path. She had the 2nd edition version and found it to be a great resource that she used almost daily in her practice. I purchased this edition and I LOVE it!! I have used it quite a few times as a reference for my neurology class and as a source in papers. This book is very easy to understand and use for students. I wouldn't recommend this book to be used a "main" textbook in class - there it isn't quite as in depth but it does help to explain things in an easier way.

Product Description
Addressing the challenges of intercultural and interpreter-mediated speech pathology practice, this book explores the intricate relationship between culture and communicaiton before moving on to intercultural health care, including a detailed look at perceptions of illness and disability. Two chapters on intercultural speech pathology address the challenges of clinical practice, including culturally-focused assessment and management approaches. Interpreter-mediated speech pathology is covered in detail, including an overview of the process of interpreting, debate on professional versus untrained interpreters, discussion of pre-session briefing, a look at potential barriers to the interpretation process, and introduction to a collaborative partnership model for working with interpreters. The final chapter explores the author's thoughts on future directions in research and education in the field of intercultural and interpreter-mediated speech pathology.
