Editorial Review

Product Description
This book constitutes a clear, comprehensive, up-to-date introduction to the basic principles of psychological and educational assessment that underlie effective clinical decisions about childhood language disorders. Rebecca McCauley describes specific commonly used tools, as well as general approaches ranging from traditional standardized norm-referenced testing to more recent ones, such as dynamic and qualitative assessment. Highlighting special considerations in testing and expected patterns of performance, she reviews the challenges presented by children with a variety of problems--specific language impairment, hearing loss, mental retardation, and autism spectrum disorders. Three extended case examples illustrate her discussion of each of these target groups. Her overarching theme is the crucial role of well-formed questions as fundamental guides to decision making, independent of approach.

Each chapter features lists of key concepts and terms, study questions, and recommended readings. Tables throughout offer succinct summaries and aids to memory.

Students, their instructors, and speech-language pathologists continuing their professional education will all welcome this invaluable new resource.

Distinctive features include:
* a comprehensive consideration of both psychometric and descriptive approaches to the characterization of children's language;
* a detailed discussion of background issues important in the language assessment of the major groups of children with language impairment;
* timely information on assessment of change--a topic frequently not covered in other texts;
* extensive guidance on how to evaluate individual norm-referenced measures for adoption;
* an extensive appendix listing about 50 measures used to assess language in children; and
* a test review guide that can be reproduced for use by readers.

Product Description

A strong focus on the analysis and synthesis of language disorders teaches students to think like a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Ideal for undergraduate students, Language Disorders in Children strives to be much more than an introductory book. This innovative first edition text teaches students how to analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and link the information they are learning. Going beyond basic concepts and basic definitions, this book consistently offers readers opportunities for higher-order learning, preparing each student to become a careful evaluator of information with respect to language disorders as well as an adept problem-solver.

Language Disorders in Children is organized by disorder groups and theme, allowing students to easily make connections between theoretical information and clinical practice. Each chapter also includes a number of thoughtful features, such as case histories, clinical decision trees, and hot topic discussions, all of which facilitate learning both in and outside of the classroom. Topics of special interest include emergent literacy issues in school-aged children, the response-to-intervention approach, and the sequence of language in young children.

This text understands the need of today’s student to learn lifetime critical thinking skills, to see relationships between isolated ideas and facts, and think like a Speech-Language Pathologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required, but Helpful Reading
My class has started this book from the back to the front.It is extemely helpful if you are entering the Speech/Language or Audiology fields.Lots of great information.My only complaint about this book is that each page doesn't note the chapter at the top of the page.So, when you're looking for a specific chapter while flipping through the book, you have to find the chapter title page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you.
I am very pleased with how nice the book is.It was brand new and nothing was wrong with it in any way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Clinical
This book had a few good suggestions for the lay person working with an apraxic child.But for the most part it is directed at the Speech therapist.The tools and assessments are for the speech therapist and not a parent to use.The terms and techniques are very clinical.The two best pieces of advice in the book for a parent or lay person are to use Dr. Suess books and slower music.Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I purchased this book because my 28 month old son was not talking.The speech pathologist narrowed it down to apraxia but would not commit to the diagnosis.Needless to say we were very frustrated.After reading the 1st chapter I felt like a huge weight had been lifted - it described our son perfectly.This book is very technical, I think it is written for someone with a background in this field but I was able to get a lot of ideas from it. His speech pathologist has explained many of the more complex issues.All in all it is a great book! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book looks at the major changes that have occurred in the theory and practice of speech therapy for children with developmental speech disorders. It looks at current issues and their clinical implications, but the overall aim of the book is to set clinical practice firmly in a theoretical framework. While it is therefore essentially a practice book for practitioners, it also engages in the academic investigation of the nature of the different types of developmental speech disorders and their consequences for the children. This discussion provides the framework in which to consider clinical management and specific clinical techniques. A recurrent theme throughout each chapter is the impact of linguistics upon our understanding and management of children's problems in learning to pronounce. There is no doubt that the linguistic revolution in speech and language pathology has produced an entirely new perspective on these disorders by identifying the phonological dimension of speech development. Of equal importance is the expansion of knowledge about children's language development.Much more information is now available about phonological development in terms of what the developmental changes are and when they occur. This information is valuable in assessment and diagnosis. The book also includes a number of competing theories explaining how children develop their pronunciation patterns. These theories provide the premises upon which to establish a principled theory of therapy. To reflect these issues and their clinical implications the book is divided into three sections. The first section explores the framework within which to discuss developmental speech disorders. The second section covers three specific types of pathological conditions with which developmental speech disorders are associated. The third section examines the problems of children who have no evident major disabling condition and yet they experience severe difficulties learning to pronounce and subsequently, more often than not, learning to read and write. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best money ever spent!
This text is exceptional! I would highly recommend this textbook to any clinician working with children who have hypernasal speech/ VPI. It has proven to be the most USEFUL textbook I've ever had...let's just say this one is NOT sitting on my shelf collecting dust!It was so thoughtful of Dr. Kummer to include video examples of key issues related to VPI.I am so happy I purchased this text and found the price to be very reasonable considering everything it has to offer. Buy it, you'll be glad you did!

The book was exactly what i needed to do well in my class. It was the exact updated version of the original book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A nice overview of available information
This is a nice reference to introduce you general issues, anatomic structures, and therapeutic and surgical techniques involved in the care of patients with craniofacial anomalies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for graduate students!
I have been teaching a graduate course in cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies for 20+ years.I am thrilled with Dr. Kummer's text.Students love it!It has a strong research base, but the information has excellent clinical application and is very readable with many case studies.Although it is geared toward speech-language pathologists, its multi-disciplinary orientation would make it a useful resource for any member of a cleft palate team.The information is complex enough to be useful to an experienced team member, yet the novice reader is given sufficient background information to be able to grow with the text.Exceptionally thorough and highly recommended! ... Product Description
B> Childhood Motor Speech Disabilities provides a comprehensive, up-to-date outline of all childhood motor speech disabilities. This book also gives readers a complete picture of the major nervous system disorders associated with dysarthria, presents the five types of childhood dysarthria, and clarifies the classification of childhood dysarthria.The eight years since the publication of the first edition have seen an increased interest in the nature and habilitation of the controversial disorder known as developmental verbal dyspraxia (DVD). The heated controversy and intense interest in DVD is questioned and put in perspective by pointing out that it is a low frequency pediatric phonological disorder compared to the widespread phonological delay of unknown origin.Childhood Motor Speech Disability also reviews and critiques a three-part research study by JSHR and two major textbooks that have been published since the first edition. For readers interested in childhood motor speech disabilities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
The "Syndrome Identification for Speech-Language Pathologists-An Illustrated PocketGuide" contains descriptions of many, many syndromes. Most of the descriptions are accompanied by a photograph. The photos are not the best quality, but you get the idea of what the syndrome looks like. Very helpful for quickly identifying syndromes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful information but...
I think the information presented is helpful, for our field, and concise.However for the money I paid I would like nice quality photos.All the photos are pixelated and while it may not matter in terms of identifying a syndrome, I'm not sure why they felt the need to skimp on this part.Cell phone cameras take better pictures than those in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars handy reference
I am an SLP at a special needs preschool.My colleagues and I (including OTs, PTs, psychologist, etc.) frequently refer to this book.It's easy to look up a syndrome by name or by characteristics.The entries are concise and easy to understand.The syndrome is described, and then characteristics such as speech/language disorders, physical features, differential diagnosis, history and prognosis are given.It's probably not the most comprehensive book out there, but we find it very handy for the population we serve. ...
