2-0 out of 5 stars Way too basic and elementary. States the obvious
This book had good intentions, but I found the text to be too basic and elementary. I was somewhat disturbed when she talked about telling her daughter her hair was a bird's nest, etc. It seemed a little hurtful for a young child.

I liked the premise and the idea behind the book, but the execution was not very insightful or well thought out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy read
This is great easy read bible study. It has very few pages per Chapt which makes it easy to read on a daily basis in a busy life!Any woman could relate this study and I would recommend it

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down!
I really liked this bible study, I do them on my own and enjoy the quiet time studying.Thought provoking questions, that can make you think before you act, shouldn't the bible do that anyways? To give you an example to pursue peace in our lives, we need to make decisions in our lives that will bring about peace in the future. Another chapter when we take on less its then easy to take on more and get overwhelmed again, we need to pray first before we take on more.

3-0 out of 5 stars okay for individuals
I think this study would be fine for an individual but it is a bit light for a group study.I'm a fan of the Women of Faith organization, however, I was a bit disappointed in the content. There could have been so much more. ... Read more

Product Description
The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook broke new ground when it was first published in 1980, detailing easy, step-by-step techniques for calming the body and mind in an increasingly overstimulated world. Now in its sixth edition, this workbook, highly regarded by therapists and their clients, remains the "go-to" source for stress reduction strategies that can be incorporated into even the busiest lives.

This new edition is updated with powerful relaxation techniques based on the latest research, and draws from a variety of proven treatment methods, including progressive relaxation, autogenics, self-hypnosis, visualization, and mindfulness and acceptance therapy.

In the first chapter, you'll explore your own stress triggers and symptoms, and learn how to create a personal plan for stress reduction. Each chapter features a different method for relaxation and stress reduction, explains why the method works, and provides on-the-spot exercises you can do to apply that method when you feel stressed. The result is a comprehensive yet accessible workbook that will help you to curb stress and cultivate a more peaceful life.

Amazon.com Review
Although the sheer size of this dense workbook might cause initialhyperventilation--280 full-size sheets of text--take heart (and a deepbreath!): the many self-assessment tools and calming techniques presentedin this fifth edition can help overcome anxiety and promote physical and emotional well-being. First introduced in 1980, the book received praise forpresenting a comprehensive look at stress, its physical manifestations, andthe multiple ways it can be managed. Twenty years later, its well-organizedchapters on breathing, relaxation, meditation, thought stopping, and bodyawareness still guide the reader through copious self-help techniques totry and, eventually, master. Other chapters, including job stressmanagement, goal setting and time management, and assertiveness training, focuson daily scenarios people often find distressing. Lessons in identifyingkey elements that trigger unpleasant responses and in reacting differentlyto these elements are designed to defuse perceived conflicts. For thisedition, coauthors Martha Davis (psychologist in the Department ofPsychiatry of Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Santa Clara, CA), ElizabethRobbins Eshelman (licensed clinical social worker with Kaiser PermanenteOnline), and Matthew McKay (clinical director of Haight-AshburyPsychological Services, San Francisco, CA) have added topics on worrycontrol, anger management, and eye-movement therapy. New diagrams and amore reader-friendly format should appeal to readers, despite a few typosand graphical mishaps. This is a valuable tool for therapists, their patients, and the stressed-at-large. --Liane Thomas ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview
This is probably the first self-help book I ever read and it was very helpful in reducing my stress.I'm happy to see that the authors have done a nice job of continuing to update the principles and tools.I think this is particularly useful for someone who wants an overview of the strategies that are available and not so great if you have read a lot of self-help books about stress and anxiety. The workbook format is also helpful as reading a book is minimally effective if you don't make an effort to enact the tools provided. You will get a lot more out of this book if you use the workbook -rather than just reading the material. If you are having a hard time relaxing or don't want to take a lot of time out to practice stress reduction strategies - try the book Active Relaxation.Active Relaxation: How to Increase Productivity and Achieve Balance by Decreasing Stress and Anxiety

5-0 out of 5 stars Stress Be Gone
This book is a great tool to use in finding out more about yourself and how your own body responds to external stimulants that have been creating symptoms unawaredly inside yourself due to a big bully (STRESS).Its not eternal truth but definitely a good resource to assist you in understanding your human body and your default coping methods to our world while helping you in learning how to manage these issues through clinically proven techniques that can now be done anytime or anyplace with the help of "The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook."

3-0 out of 5 stars Over kill
I bought this book for my mother and my mother in law (whom I love by the way)as a reference to stress management. The comment they both gave me was while it was a comprehensive book It was a bit overwhelming. The book had so many different approaches to the problem that they didn't know where to start or what part to focus on. I then recently sent them another book called Invisible Valium: The Philosophy for Overcoming Stress and Anxiety (Volume 1) and they loved it, because it was short and to the point with real life examples. So now they keep one in their library and the other in there purse for quick reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
This book will give you an understanding of all the ways you could reduce stress and help you decide which options will work best for you. Excellent!!

3-0 out of 5 stars allright
the book is okay

it contains a verity of exercises proven to work,

the problem is that in the book... they are so complicated,

in books like Cognitive Therapy of Anxiety Disorders: Science and Practice explained in less that one sentence,

instead of a whole page, after reading books like "the invisible gorilla" i think not too many people can do that much multitasking.

its alright i guess, way too overcomplicated

i recommend reading house of cards by robyn dawes.. ... Read more

In 1990, Jon Kabat-Zinn revolutionized the way millions of people handle distressing thoughts and feelings by writing Full Catastrophe Living, the book that introduced mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) to the public for the first time. In A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook, mindfulness experts Bob Stahl and Elisha Goldstein adapt Kabat-Zinn's groundbreaking program into an accessible workbook format. Readers turn to this book once a week for eleven weeks, gradually improving their ability to relieve intense stress and reconnect with the present.

The workbook invites readers to participate in formal and informal practices and use fill-in exercises to reflect and track their progress. After each weekly session, readers can apply the techniques they learned that week into everyday life, gradually learning to replace stress-promoting habits with mindful ones. The audio CD bound with this book offers extensive and helpful supplemental material that readers can listen to anytime to receive a refresher course on MBSR techniques and useful guidance for incorporating these techniques into their days.

Bob Stahl and Elisha Goldstein have done a great job in making the art of mindfulness and its cultivation through MBSR practices accessible to a public readership at a time when interest in both is rising exponentially in our society due to the increasing stress and speed and anxiety of our lives. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for Stress Reduction and a Great Introduction to MBSR
This workbook/CD combo is a pragmatic solution for those in need of stress reduction (100% of the American population).

I suffered a ruptured appendix in December 2009 and it took several months to recover from the stress-induced (and medicine-induced) ulcers it precipitated.I ordered this workbook to help reduce my pain, and it(along with my own supplement plan) worked wonders!

This workbook was a wonderful introduction to MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) for me.I learned a lot about both myself and my body's physical clues to stress and how to eliminate them.MSBR is a clinical technique, used with great success at the University of Massachussetts Medical Center; Google to learn more. You can also learn more about MBSR directly from its founder, Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, via his book, Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness.

Here's what I liked best about Stahl and Goldstein's Workbook:

1.It's a real workbook!Lessons are broken into a series of 11 lessons that you can tackle, ideally one per week.No more excuses about being WAY to busy--you really can make time to do this!
2.8 hours of guided meditations are included on the CD that accompanies the workbook--download to your ipod & learn to relax!
3.Each chapter/lesson has personalized worksheet questions/self-evaluations so that you can track your practice and become more MINDFULLY AWARE of yourself and your issues.

Even the busiest among us can make time for this workbook, and the techniques it teaches really, really work. Even during weeks when I was too busy to fully tackle a lesson, I was able to make use of the Guided Meditations via my IPod.

Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Change your life starting today.
Eons ago I took a couple of mindfulness classes and for a while I used to inconsistently practice mindfulness. Now years later this book caught my eye. This book is written in a comforting and patient tone as the authors explain the purpose and provide numerous useful exercises requiring your written response. If you are well versed in this topic, recently attended a workshop or read other books, then this book may be too simplistic for you. This process requires practice and patience with yourself as it really is difficult to quiet the mind. Yoga poses, well selected poems and quotes, and a MP3 CD are included to enhance the mindfulness learning experience. The first written exercise asks why did you purchase this book, what you are hoping to change and to list positive qualities about yourself. This is when I realized this wasn't going to be a quick and simple read, but one that required thoughtfulness and a time commitment. Deciding and acting on not making judgments, (I think this is the most difficult aspect), having intention, and becoming free of shoulds, rehearsals for the future and rehashing of the past are the gifts you earn from this process. You stay in the present moment which sounds so easy but it takes a lot of practice and even more effort until it becomes a natural mindset. The emotional, mental and physical benefits can become a positive life-changing experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get enlightened!
This workbook is particularly useful for anyone who has never had any experience with new age philosophy. Most of the exercises consist of getting your mind and body involved in the present moment which, believe it or not, is very difficult when you are just starting with the concept.

Once you become 'trained' to be in the present moment, your stress levels will invariably become lower and your overall happiness and contentment will improve. This workbook will help you attain peace in your life, love, and work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book but have to keep it up!
I really enjoyed this book, it helped me understand why I was so stressed out, especially going through a really negative time in my life. The key to making this successful is to keep up on the book and do all the questions. That was my biggest problem, but once I made it a habit I really found out some interesting and powerful things about myself. I also really liked the CD that comes with the books. It helped me learn how to meditate, something I am trying to do now on a daily basis to help me with my stress and find mindfulness :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward Western-Style Approach to Eastern Meditation
I've done some meditation as part of a yoga class and the instructor used mostly mystical-sounding descriptions of what we were doing. On one hand I wanted to get into it, but the Western logic part of my brain wanted some science and statistics to back it up. It's hard to take some things seriously when there's so much disinformation on the web and elsewhere.

This book takes a fairly neutral approach to mindfulness meditation. It doesn't immediately overwhelm you with happy-sounding terms or promise that it is "the way" to do something. Chapter 1 defines mindfulness and talks about habitual thinking patterns, which can be very destructive time wasters and lead to stress. The first formal practice involves eating a raisin mindfully, and there's a 3-minute check-in to help you get a better idea of how the practice works.

There are two types of meditation: insight and concentration. This workbook focuses on mindfulness, which is a type of insight meditation. Basically, you focus on your body and feelings and observe what's going on at the moment without judgment, whereas concentration meditation involves mantras and imagery. I think insight meditation is a bit more approachable for most Westerners simply because there's no outward appearance of religion or doctrine associated with it. Essentially, it seems more mechanical and thus, scientific.

The meditations are approachable and for most of them you don't need to do anything special. A short meditation can be done at your desk or simply seated on the sofa (with the TV off, of course!). Later chapters do get into meditation postures, including sitting poses and lying poses. Chapter 6 on "Deepening Your Practice" includes yoga-based stretches that will help relax your muscles. To keep the text approachable to its Western audience, the authors use common English names for the poses and don't even include the Sanskrit asana names.

The accompanying CD to this workbook is for mp3 CD players only. I rated the workbook/audio only 4 stars for that reason. The recorded meditations vary in length; some are only 5 minutes while others are 45 minutes. You can do the meditations with or without the audio. I would recommend reading the entire chapter first, then reading a meditation before going on to listen to the audio version. I find that I do a little better when I have an idea of what is coming and how long the meditation will take.

This is not a book to read once and put on the shelf, as the exercises are meant to be something that you adapt to your daily life. For most of us, time commitments mean we can't sit and meditate for hours at a time, so the book's short meditations are welcome breaks in an otherwise hectic lifestyle. I recommend this as a good starting point for daily practice, and as you become more comfortable with the idea of meditating you may want to investigate concentration meditation, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adrenal Fatigue
Very interesting and informative. I was a little skeptical when I realized there was a vitamin regimen that the author had conveniently made up and was available for purchase. But he does spell out exactly what you need and you can go to the vitamin store if you choose to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Everyone with a fatigue problem should read this book.Has great chapters on rest, food, stress and all the things needed to get your energy back. Very down to earth with no medical terms that we do not understand.Just because most doctors do not understand this very common syndrome doesn't mean that we can't do what the book says and regain our vitality for life.I won't say it is easy (changing the way we eat, sleep, etc) but well worth the effort to feel better.I wish I had read this book years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn more about Adrenal Fatigue also known as Adrenal Insufficiency
I was hesitant to read this book when it was suggested to me because I thought it would be just one more crazy idea. I also have a lot of knowledge about the body and stress because I'm a retired registered nurse. I've suspected for years that I had Adrenal Fatigue because I've experienced a lot of trauma and a lot of stress. I've also been diagnosed with FMS and CFS. No one knows the cause of these diagnosis nor do they have proven treatments other than potent drugs. The author of this book points out that these two diagnosis are often made because Doctors don't recognize or diagnose Adrenal Fatigue unless you are in crisis. Blood test results show only the highest levels of Adrenal Fatigue so many are not diagnosed. I almost stopped reading after the first chapter because I didn't learn anything new. I decided to skip around and read other chapters. I'm so glad I did. When I read about nutrition I got really excited because it sounds like exactly what I need for my own health. Some people would say it's junk or snake oil medicine. I believe it's well worth giving it a try. I've believed in natural medicine for a long time and this book gives very easy to understand explanations in detail about Adrenal Fatigue and some good ideas of how to treat it without strong medicine. Most people want quick fixes so they ask for drugs to treat every diagnosis. This isn't always the best option because some drugs can cause damage to the body if used over a long period of time. The drug most often prescribed for Adrenal Fatigue is steroids such as prednisone. I know enough about that drug to know I'd much rather try natural treatments first. As this book points out; natural medicine takes much longer to show results than drugs, but the results can be more long lasting without side effects. It also points out, correctly I believe, that most mainstream doctors would discourage you from trying this as they more often than not discount Holistic or Natural medicine.I believe the author of this book who holds 2 Masters degrees and 3 Doctorates has the knowledge to teach me and others some important information. If you havesuffered due to trauma or experienced a lot of stress, have been diagnosed with depression or any of the above diagnosis I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adrenal Fatigue Understood - there is help and hope!
This book was referred to me by my doctor who recently gave me a positive diagnosis for Adrenal Fatigue (different from, but can be connected to, Chronic Fatigue). I have found it very easy to read and understand and it certainly hits the nail on the head!! The explanations are clear and the diagrams really help too as I am a visual learner! Recovery from Adrenal Fatigue is a journey and this is proving to be a very useful tool on this journey. Thoroughly recommend that any one struggling with dragging fatigue, lack of energy and enjoyment of life reads it - it may just be your answer too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

Product Description
A landmark book that reveals how stress accelerates aging and how women can reverse the damage.

Forty-two million American women-those between the ages of forty and sixty-experience the most stress of anyone in the world. And it shows, inside and out: from wrinkles and gray hair to the cells at the very core of our bodies.

In Stress Less, prominent health and science journalist Thea Singer explores what the new science of stress can tell us about how to turn back the cellular clock. Drawing on cutting-edge information from a who's who of stress researchers, including Nobel Prize-winning biologist Elizabeth Blackburn, Singer explains how women's bodies react to stress, from shifts in mood to changes at a genetic level that affect how women look and feel, and even how long they live. But Singer also details how easy lifestyle changes can reduce the frequency and intensity of the body's reactions-thus minimizing the hazardous effects of stress and giving us the necessary tools to feel better, look younger, and live longer. ... Product Description
In today's world, yesterday's methods just don't work. In Getting Things Done, veteran coach and management consultant David Allen shares the breakthrough methods for stress-free performance that he has introduced to tens of thousands of people across the country. Allen's premise is simple: our productivity is directly proportional to our ability to relax. Only when our minds are clear and our thoughts are organized can we achieve effective productivity and unleash our creative potential. In Getting Things Done Allen shows how to:

€ Apply the "do it, delegate it, defer it, drop it" rule to get your in-box to empty
€ Reassess goals and stay focused in changing situations
€ Plan projects as well as get them unstuck
€ Overcome feelings of confusion, anxiety, and being overwhelmed
€ Feel fine about what you're not doing

From core principles to proven tricks, Getting Things Done can transform the way you work, showing you how to pick up the pace without wearing yourself down.Amazon.com Review
With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, "flow," "mind like water," and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you'd almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called Zen and the Art of Schedule Maintenance.

Not quite. Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-do's clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists--all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on. However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organized, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed "the personal productivity guru,"suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech saber known as the cell phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.)

As whole-life-organizing systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk, The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket"

That's where the processing and prioritizing begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's commonsense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment; Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belabored, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to soccer moms (who we all know aremore organized than most CEOs to start with). --Timothy Murphy ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good First Start
It is a great first start into organizational skills, it teaches you how the brain works and this set has made me organize my whole house, some things I have started to organize, some I will be getting to shortly and then there is some I put a 2 year plan on just to set my mind free so that I can start to be more productive in my life in which I learned in freeing your mind through this process and the importance of it, I definently recomend this program to anyone just because alot of us are not automatically inclined to think more profeshional and organized and have to be tought, my parents were not so organized and in fact a complete mess and I chose to stop that cycle for me and my children, hope this review helps, love and blessings xoxo :-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for great productivity
This is a great book to anyone who feels overwhelmed due to the amount of work they many currently have.It keeps one focused and it is a great tool to have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the ADD
If you have trouble focusing or following things in a linear path, I don't recommend this book. I'm OCD and very much Type A in personality and I struggled through this book. This whole system was very confusing and maybe in a year or two I'll be able to focus on it a bit better. But I'm also impatient. Give me solutions that I can apply now so I can start to see results. This book is not built that way. I recommend this book instead: Zen To Done: The Ultimate Simple Productivity System

5-0 out of 5 stars Stick With It - It Works!
The book's cover says "The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" and I have to say it delivered on that right away. Here's what helped me most:

Get it out of your head
Probably the biggest thing that helped was the concept of "getting it out of your head".My head was filled with things I needed to keep track of.The problem was I would remind myself of what those things were constantly - mostly in the middle of the night.GTD recommends you write out each thought, idea, etc. on a separate piece of paper.I used to make lists, but then I would see a laundry list of things to do and become drained. It makes sense to write down each thing on its own page because you can't process all the things you need to do at the same time.We usually do things one item at a time. This in of itself was a huge benefit. If an idea pops into my head, I write it down.Once I do (and of course make sure it goes into a system that will guarantee my next action) then it's released from my head, freeing me up.

Two minute rule
This is about going through your inbox and doing whatever is in there that can be done in two minutes or less.Sounds simple because it is!And it's amazing how quickly I can reduce my inbox. The thinking behind this is that sometimes it takes longer to store and track something than just to do it!

Grouping like activities
Make all your calls one after the other - whether they're related or not.Take a block of time and send your emails out.If you have magazines stacked up - read the cover story of each - that's the most important.

Is it actionable?
Whatever you're trying to manage either has a next step or doesn't.GTD teaches you how to categorize things so that you always know what to do with them. This was especially true with projects. The book points out that you really never do a project, you do the next actionable thing towards getting that project done.

GTD has increased my productivity and reduced my stress.I no longer miss appointments, or wake up in the middle of the night wondering if I finished something. The book is very intuitive and I would highly recommend it.FYI - it does take a while to incorporate the whole system. If you make a commitment to doing so, you will benefit tremendously.

And if you have a goal you've been putting off - read "Goal your 30 day game plan for Business and Career Success"Goal!: Your 30-Day Game Plan for Business and Career SuccessIt was recommended to me and I achieved a goal I had put off for years. It's a quick read and has you taking action right away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Schiraldi took a complex issue and makes it easy to grasp in a well-organized format. It is useful for both the general reader who wants basic information and those who wish to do more in-depth reading.I was impressed with how the physiological concepts are explained, and wish I had read this book before taking introductory psychology courses.I have recommended it to people who have the diagnosis but also to anyone who has or knows someone with a mental illness of any type because much of the information is widely applicable, although what he writes about PTSD is invaluable.Overall I would highly recommend the book without reservation for anyone seeking information on mental illness and especially as a resource for PTSD, it should be a staple in the library of anyone studying the disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
After reading the first 90 pages or so, I finally feel validated that I am not totally losing my mind.I was concerned about that for awhile as stressor upon stressor was piled on my plate. The author did his homework and has fully documented his findings. Now I know that my reaction to the very abnormal is normal, I feel better already.I have a lot of work to do, but relief comes slowly and in small steps.I give this a definite, huge thumbs up and five-star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
As a psychotherapist, I am always struck by the overwhelming complexity of PTSD and the layers of self-denial and avoidance reactions that often isolate a sufferer from the core emotional and sensory trauma. This book helps untangle the chaos of traumatic anxiety and gives us a better way to manage PTSD. I use mindfulness meditation therapy to work with trauma and find it to be most helpful. You might like to learn more about this approach, I also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation' available through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition: For the Clinician
Issued ten years ago, the first edition of Schiraldi's PTSD Sourcebook became (at least over time) the "industry standard" orientation text for new counselors and therapists in the VA Healthcare System. Then, as now, it was both comprehensive and easy to understand.

I wondered (in about 2000 or 2001) why it wasn't used as a complete "patient education" piece, but over time, I came to understand that the VA is =very= conservative about such matters. With good reason, at least in some respects: There was material in the first edition that was surely capable of triggering PTSD symptoms in readers who had not yet progressed far enough in therapy to defend against such triggering.

While not a substantial revision of the original, the second edition does add a number of simplified descriptions of therapeutic techniques as well as mentions here and there of newer efficacy research to support these and previously included methods. That said, the second edition continues to be the single best, mass-market text available for understanding PTSD's causes and conditions, as well as doing something meaningful about it.

With regard to the controversy over triggering, my suggestion is simply that while PTSD sufferers with denser, more primitive ego defenses (e.g.: dissociation, rage, nihilistic depressive orientation) require some work before tackling a book like this, most sufferers - and family members alike - will be hugely rewarded for diving in here. Schiraldi's book is "practical" and "hands-on," as opposed to "heavily neurobiological" or "interactionally theoretical."

This is not Bessel van der Kolk's (wonderful) =Traumatic Stress= or even Matthew Friedman's terrific little =Post-Traumatic and Acute Stress Disorders=. But, as a clinician, I found it (once again) to be a very effective re-orientation toward discussing PTSD and its component issues =with= those who are neither neuropsychologists or theory-soaked experts on interactional traumatization, let alone psychopharmacologists.

Schiraldi neatly distills the whole gamut of topics on nature and nurture, as well as stress and de-stress, into one- and two-syllable verbiage we can use to make sense of it all the same way the =patient= will have to make sense of it.

Do I have issues with the book? Of course. Shiraldi does tend towards the VAHS culture's view that one size fits all here and there. And some clinicians who have not themselves worked through their all-or-nothing orientations may get the idea that the author has covered all of the possible bases. He has not. But if he tried to do so, the book would be impossibly large, as well as needlessly difficult for lay readers.

That's a critique, however, that can be made of nearly any mass market book on such a complex subject. On the whole, this is a valuable and worthwhile read for clinicians and patients alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!What a great resource for PTSD sufferers.
I have been suffering with anxiety, depression and phobias for most of my life. After discovering through therapy that I suffer from PTSD due to growing up with an alcoholic father, I decided to purchase this book.I've been reading through it and it has been helping me learn a lot about PTSD and how to heal from it.
Chapters include:
the basics of PTSD, symptoms that include anxiety and dissociation
Healing, recovery and growth.
Preparing for the recovery process
Managing symptoms
Treatments (including memory work, therapy, hypnosis, healing rituals, resolving guilt, dream mgmt, etc)
The last few chapters are devoted to "moving on", becoming happy and spiritual as well as having a sense of purpose.
If you are a sufferer of PTSD and grew up in an alcoholic or dysfunctional home, I highly recommend this book. This book is great in conjunction with cognitive "talk" therapy with a professional, credible counselor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Content is excellent but my copy has crooked pages
The content of Roark's Formulas is very handy for a desk reference type book and is referred to in many other works like Marks' Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers and Design of Weldments and Design of Welded Structures by Omer Blodgett.

My copy of the 7th edition looks like the pages were crooked when they were cut to size. The text on left hand pages is tilted to the top left and the right pages are tilted to the top right. Most likely when the stack of printed material was in the size cutter it wasn't squared properly because every page is turned the exact same amount. It doesn't affect the readability of anything it just looks odd because you almost think you're holding the book crooked sine the text isn't parallel to the top and bottom edges.

The paper isn't the slick, durable type used in McGraw Hill's other reference books like Marks' Std Handbook for Mechanical Engineers, so combined with the crooked page trim I would rate the physical appearance sub-par.I expect better from a professional level book from McGraw Hill.

2-0 out of 5 stars Downhill
Roark would turn over in his grave if he reviewed what Young and Budynas have done to his fine work.Roark, 4th Edition is the last of his works. The tables were clear and easy to read.If you can find one, new or used, I would strongly recommend a 4th Edition copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference book
As like others, I also recommend this text for it's overall content and subject matter. This is a helpful reference book for daily engineering applications. But - users should be aware that there are some basic mistakes in the book. The book is very user friendly to locate formulas and items. Address; the technical mistakes, and I would give if a five star rating.

I should have most of this book memorized by now since I've relied on it for so many years. I highly recommend this text.

Product Description
Where does stress come from? Financial pressures? Looming deadlines? Conflicts at work or at home? For more than half a century, we’ve been told that stress comes from circumstances like these, that it’s a by-product of our ancestors’ fight-or-flight response to danger, and that the best we can do, given the fast pace of life today, is to breathe, try to relax, and accept that life is hard. All of this, according to Andrew Bernstein, is wrong. Spurred by the death of several family members when he was young, Bernstein began a quest to understand the real dynamics of stress and resilience. He eventually realized that stress doesn’t come from your circumstances—it comes from your thoughts about your circumstances. More specifically, stress is created by a particular kind of thought that humans happen to excel at. Seeing this, Bernstein realized that the antidote to stress—and the key to far greater resilience—is not exercise or physical relaxation, but finding these stress-producing thoughts and finally dismantling them. He created a process called ActivInsight that helps you—and the people you care about—do this on your own in just seven steps, often yielding life-changing breakthroughs in a matter of minutes.

Bernstein has been teaching ActivInsight to great acclaim in schools, not-for-profits, and Fortune 500 companies since 2004. Now he shares this technique for the first time with a wider audience. In The Myth of Stress, you will experience the surprising power of this new approach for yourself as you apply ActivInsight to a wide variety of today’s most common challenges, including:

weight loss • money • success interpersonal conflict • addiction • traffic divorce • heartbreak • discrimination • anger uncertainty about the future • loss of a loved one and more

With compassion, intelligence, and humor, The Myth of Stress offers a complete reeducation in the nature of stress, permanently changing the way you relate to challenges—at school, at work, and at home—in order to live a happier and healthier life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just give a try.
It's a book that gives a chance to look with another eyes to the same problems. It's not melodramatic, goes straight to the point .The reading goes easy, explanations are well done. It shows how prepared the writer is to give good ideas for a better understanding of how stress really works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stress: It's Everywhere! (Or so we Think)
It's everywhere, or so we think. I get up in the morning and there it was waiting for me when I slept through my alarm clock and was late for work. It showed up again on my way to work in the traffic jam and yet again at work in the team meeting. It crept in at family dinner disguised as conversation. Finally at the end of the day I go to bed with it and it keeps me up late only to make me sleep through my alarm clock again.

Stress seems to follow me around looking for opportunities to make my life miserable.

"Myth of Stress" by Andrew Bernstein challenges the common thought process that outside factors are the cause of the stress. Based on personal experience, research and professional work, he posits that stress is 100% internal. In his blog on Psychology Today he says, "The truth is that stress doesn't come from your boss, your kids, your spouse, traffic jams, health challenges, or other circumstances. It comes from your thoughts about these circumstances. "

He presents a simple thought process to engage in at the moment stress occurs. By the end of this process each time I am able to change the way I feel by changing the way I think. The truth I realized is that stress indeed follows me around. It lives in the way I perceive situations and people in my life. If I change my perception and act on positive behaviors that encourage the elimination of stress, I can minimize the amount of stress I feel drastically.

Although simple, this process takes practice and is best utilized in conjunction with the tools Andrew Bernstein and his company ActivInsight have provided, which can be found at [...]Give it a try and see if changing your thoughts can help you alleviate the stress that seems to be everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stretch in the right direction!
I've just re-read The Myth of Stress, and am happy to give my recommendation to anyone looking to change the way they think about stress, anxiety, and beyond.
I've been doing the worksheets for quite awhile now, and doing the process really pushes your thinking past the stubborn mind-set, which can be quite a challenge, depending on your "stressor".I could probably do the steps in my head, but I notice a real benefit to doing them on paper. You feel an honest sensation of revelation as you write what proves your negations, and you have a tangible reference to go back to.
There are enough personal accounts for the reader to understand how the process works, and enough humor to add personality to the "how-to".When you go on to do the worksheets for yourself, you're rewarded with an honest look at your way of thinking. If you're still looking for coddling, vengeance or whatever your thoughts before going in - save the worksheet, and come back to it later. There's no room for B.S.If you're not brutally honest, (and there's the big stretch), it won't work.
Like regular exercise and a healthy diet, it's a tool for the long haul. The dynamics of life change every day, and this book is a great guide to clarity.Your blood pressure will thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars First self-help book in 35 years that really worked
This is what a self-help book should be. You buy it, you honestly and earnestly do what it says to do and it all works like it says it will. This is the way it's supposed to be. I can't think of a higher recommendation. I was shocked at how the stress went way down when I did my own worksheet on "Why I should not be financially successful at this time." I thought taking an honest look at myself would make me feel worse and, in addition, cause me to lose my motivation to work hard. But just as the author explains in detail, you will actually unwind your emotional knots and feel much better. I actually want to work harder and smarter but this time, after having done the worksheet, I am now coming from a different place. A place of greatly improved peace and clear-mindedness. Furthermore, the changes appear to be long-lasting, not just a temporary high. But even if I'm not ultimately successful, in a way, I'm no longer emotionally attached to the outcome whatever it may be. This is the first clear-headedness andpeace-of-mind I have ever experienced. I also noticed that the relief is immediate but after several days of occasional reflection the insight is deeper and so is the sweet peace. The implications are pretty staggering. This means I can be my own counselor. I no longer feel that I have to depend on anyone else for my happiness or to help me "figure things out emotionally."In my mind, this is what all my years of reading the Bible and religion should have done(bring me peace and tremendous desire to work hard). Instead, they just made me feel worse about myself and not motivated to do anything but apologize for even living. This book did for me what the Bible, religion, NLP, "Law of Attraction" books and all the other, seemingly endless, psychology books could not do. In a way, to me, this book is the Rosetta Stone for all of Psychology. What is the point of Psychology/Psychiatry? To provide insight that is totally convincing to yourself and that destroys the negative beliefs you are holding. In NLP terms, this technique allows me to to reframe-on-demand anything I want(far easier and more effective than "Mind-Lines"). And have the insights and peace-of-mind stick. If doubt creeps in, I just do another worksheet. I can now thankfully throw away my NLP books, Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, Think and Grow Rich, the "Law of Attraction" scam books(including "The Secret" and Joseph Murphy) and all the rest. Why couldn't they get to the point in a simple, elegant and intensely practical way like this author has? Thank you, sir.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Dealing With Life's Stresses in a More Intelligent Way
I recommended this book to all of my friends, and we are all a little shocked by our change in attitude when encountering stressful events. For instance, we used to spend a lot of time telling each other how stressed out we were, how burned-out we felt.... Now we practice the ActiveInsight exercises in Andrew Bernstein's book, and we are all so much more comfortable with life's irksome events. Even my husband thinks I'm different (especially in traffic jams).

This book is so thoughtful, and the author's voice is warm and cogent and caring.I can't recommend it highly enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy for happiness!
One of the best books on what one needs to do to have a long, happy, healthy life. So well written by 2 top authors. Easy to read and digest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new here but ultimately good
Though the majority of this book contained suggestions that were not new to me, I did enjoy reading it if for nothing else than as a reinforcement and a reminder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Strategies for Relaxation!
The instructions in this book are clear and concise and the advice is hopeful and uplifting. I was assigned this book for class, but I found myself enjoying every line of text and I applied the techniques to calm my own life and stress responses. We (as a society) are surprisingly uneducated on how to handle the common stressor's of the modern world and I don't know a single soul who wouldn't benefit from reading this book! The author writes with a joyous tone as he guides us toward an improved lifestyle. I highly recommend Stress Free for Good!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Common Sense
But I most say that there are three suggestions that I found to be helpful- not a cure all but these three offered me a bit of peace of mind so I would say its worth the cash. Book is a quick read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple to understand and do
Practice what the book says on a regular basis and you will get to be less stressful. It has helped me and I like the realistic approach of the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 10 Simple? Solutions
I don't know exactly how simple any solution is for anyone to employ; however, I thought this book introduced some viable solutions aside from the standard techniques of breathing, meditating, visualizing...techniques.I will be conducting a class on relaxation and stress management and have found that this book adds to my original ideas for the class.I would highly recommend this book for that reason and also because it is short and to-the-point.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
A very comprehensive book analyzing the causes of stress.Especially good is the chapter on nutrition but all of the material presented is worth multiple re-reads. Very well organzed and easy to follow. There are some good quizes to help the reader pinpoint his or her own issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help yourself
The trouble with stress is that you don't have time to learn coping skills when you are truly stretched beyond your limits. That's why Dr. Wheeler's book can be so helpful. Once I got past the Type A compulsion to read the entire book cover to cover, I realized I could have been nibbling at my troubles bit by bit. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Environment Is Good For The Bottom Line?
This book contains recent research proving that an environment that supports people is good for the bottom line.Doesn't sound like Rocket Science, right? But many business (and other) leaders who create oppressive environments to boost the bottom line are obviously not aware that by doing that, besides making everybody miserable, they are wasting money as well. This book is a good argument for building progressive positive environments where everybody wins and it's good for the bottom line too.I love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and impacting
This book changed the environment in our workplace from a place of hostility, gossip, fear and low productivity to a place where there is true appreciate for one another and for those served.Ms. Maravelas provides realistic stories and attainable processes for creating positive change. Her book is engaging, funny, realistic and practical. We tried other ways to build a positive work environment but true change came after applying her techniques.A must read for every leader, parent, and employee!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spot On
Looking at the other reviews, it's hard to come up with something that hasn't already been said.Still, this book deserves it, so I'll give it a shot.

Perhaps the greatest strength of Anna's book is its applicability. There's solid theory and enough data to back up the assertions, but every chapter is rounded out with a healthy volume of practical advice.A lot of books start out with this in mind, but often fail to deliver past a "well that *sounds* nice" level. The tips outlined in How To Reduce Workplace Conflict and Stress are as simple to implement as they are powerful.

Conversely, a lot of books lay out a vision of how we should behave, but fail to substantiate their claims. And again, where many other books stumble, this one delivers. We learn not only how to, say, put someone in a constructive state of mind, but also why it works and how frequently (hint: it's pretty frequent). We don't just learn that we have trouble reasoning when we're angry, we learn why. This lends a lot of credibility to Ms. Maravelas's claims and a lot of strength to the book as a whole; you don't just need to take her advice on faith - she's already done the hard part for you.

As others have noted, this book's scope extends well beyond workplace conflict; it's applicable to family life, school, social groups, political circles... pretty much anything where people could plausibly come into conflict, which is, well, pretty much everywhere.Difficult to recommend this book highly enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars How To Reduce Workplace Conflict and Stress
This is an excellent book for managers of any experience level. It helps teach you techniques on how to avoid conflict at work and actually get your employees working for you, not against you.It is a bit hard to follow at first with all of the statistics, but once it gets to the practical application it is very insightful. It also has stories of real life work situations where Anna has been a consultant and helped various companies work better together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Focusing on Solutions instead of Blame
This book knocked my socks off!Gets right to the heart of a critical issue in an elegant way.Maravelas spells out how we can untangle assumptions that are at the root of most conflicts. She shows how to focus on the underlying cause of our frustrations - our own assumptions, misperceptions, and misunderstandings about others' behavior and how we can address the actual problem or issue, instead of allowing ourselves to be distracted and drained by useless `Cycles of Blame.'Tremendous! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Super!
I had lost this college textbook on a plane trip and needed a new one quickly.I was very pleased at the price, which was less than the original, and the speed with which I recieved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good advice
This is a very comprehensive review of stress management techniques. When combined with an active program of mindfulness meditation, then you will certainly have a winning combination. If you would like to learn more about mindfulness meditation to compliment this book thenI also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation' available through Amazon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to read and applicable techniques
Greenberg's latest edition of Comprehensive Stress Management is very easy to follow. With short chapters and a friendly tone, the content is very applicable for college students. I have been using this text in my stress management courses and the students have found it to be quite helpful. The lab exercises at the end of each chapter help the students connect the content to their own lives as they navigate through stress in college. Additionally, providing an extensive and lucid reference list at the end of each chapter is an excellent resource for all students. Although some of my students have found a few of the chapters self-explanatory, Greenberg does an excellent job of encompassing all aspects of understanding stress management.
