5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with powerful and practical solutions to stress
This book begins with a brief account of the authors own experiences with many stressful situations and how she overcame them; which gave rise to the book. You may be thinking I am already under stress, why would I want to hear about anyone elses?I think this is an important part of understanding why her techniques are so believable and useful however. Reading the book is the first step, the next is actually putting the techniques into practice by incorporating them into your life. Luckily they are simple, even though they are powerfully effective. Although this book is several years old now, I would definately say that the wisdom contained within is still very timely and appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an incredible text.I used it to prepare for a seminar on the topic. After reading 10 similar books, I rate this one the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will change one's life.
Wow!This book is simply a must-read.It is chock-full of excellent tactics, ideas, and strategies for changing one's life by learning to cope with the complexities of daily living.Leyden-Rubenstein lays outan extensive body of scientific knowledge about stress and its effects on health in a clear, direct and highly readable way, but this book offers much, much more. She intertwines this scientifically-based information to support a spiritual approach to living, focusing on self-knowledge, understanding ,and compassion. Her thesis for living is quite remarkable, and the questions raised and tactics posed are quite palatable even for recovering Catholics, like me.I recommend purchasing the meditation tape that is offered with the book to get a good start on the path to better, more peaceful living. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars None Receipt
Although this is an Amazon Reseller, I rate everything so far as totally unacceptable.I purchased the book on 12/29/09 and have NOT received it. My email to the company through Amazon has not been answered.

This has been a most unsatisfactory experience and I will hesitate to order though any Amazon resellers.

3-0 out of 5 stars A classic, but outdated in terms of information!!
I am a former physiology teaching fellow and research biochemist. In my daily life, I do stress management work with executives and others. While this book is a classic, it is NOT current and mostly of historical interest. For an easy read that is more accurate, try THE END OF STRESS AS WE KNOW IT.If you have a good biology background, then my favorite book in this genre is WHY ZEBRAS DON'T GET ULCERS by Sapolsky.

The three rating is not because it's a poorly written book, just that it is so behind the times it could be misleading.I would rate it higher for historical interest, but not for solid information on the stress response. We know much more about it now and Selye was off the mark in some important ways.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Stress of Life
Hans Selye MD PHD,the discoverer of "biologic stress", the neuroendocrine response of the body to exposure to stressors, lays the foundation for mind-body medicine and takes the reader on a detailed journey of scientific discovery which impacts every human being. This three time Nobel Prize nominee was way ahead of his time documenting the role of stress hormones on the immune, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and neurological systems.
Selye's interest in educating the lay public and health professionals and his committment to share behaviors and life philosophies that are protective or modulate life stressors are evident throughout. Strongly recommended for health professionals with an interest in the scientific foundation for mind-body medicine.A must read for the lay person with an interest in stress adaptation and how the brain processes life stressors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!
The "Stress of Life" is widely considered to be a classic work in the field of stress research. The "father" of the stress hypothesis, Hans Selye, lays out the concept of a "general adaptation syndrome" to stressors and presents evidence to show that the stress response of an animal or human is a short or long termattempt to maintain a state of physiological balance or "homeostasis" . A book that should be on the shelf of anyone interested in this topic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Book for Mental Health Providers Working with Adults Who Have a History of Trauma
As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist in private practice, I work with many individuals who have a history of trauma and/or have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.Dr. Bessel A. van der Kolk is one of the most experienced and respected professionals in this field. In this book he has edited a cross-section of articles that he considers the best in this field.

Topics covered include background issues and history, acute reactions, adaptations to trauma, memory: mechanisms and processes, developmental, social and cultural issues and treatment.I believe that this book should be essential reading for anyone working with adults who have a history of trauma in their background. Not only is the information fascinating, but it is pragmatic and can be utilized in the treatment setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Traumatic Stress
The authors display an intimate knowledge of their subject. It is an invaluable contribution to the field of mental health. I highly recommend this book to all who have an interest in trauma stress studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Resource
I work with persons suffering combat PTSD.I have found this to be, by far, the best book on treatment. The authors have a depth of understanding that goes far beyond those of most other authors. No simplistic solutions, here. Not a "just change the way you think about it" approach, and not a "just put on the goggles and re-experience it until it doesn't bother you anymore" approach ... not when the crucial events are such as seeing others' bodies torn apart by efficient weapons, or losing people one has come to love.Much wisdom in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone in a PTSD relationship!
This book is excellent for anyone who is either in a PTSD relationship or family members of PTSD sufferers. PLEASE read this as soon as you can before you make the same mistake I did. My mistake was not knowing how to support my girlfriend, and our relationship became rocky and almost ended. Since I have read this book, we have "started over" and being able to help support her is SO much easier. Also read "Non-Violent Communication" By Dr. Marshal B. Rosenberg. :D

5-0 out of 5 stars The Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Relationship
The Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Relatinship helped enhance my understanding of PTSD-something we've heard about so much lately with regard to the military that actually, I thought it only impacted them. But after reading this book, in part because I wanted to know how to be supportive of our returning troops and their loved ones, I now understand that anyone who lives through a traumatic event can develop PTSD. In fact, I came to appreciate why some people in my life had changed after events they experienced that were traumatic for them-and came to wish I'd had this information earlier so that I could have been more supportive. But the good news is, you don't have to have this type of regret. Instead, you can read this book and learn how to support your partner wounded by PTSD so that hopefully, your relationship will be strengthened in unexpected ways vesus harmed by it. Then again, even if you don't have a partner with PTSD, still read this book. Its messages could prove helpful to anyone who wants to be suportive of someone impacted by PTSD. Furthermore, tell everyone you know about this wonderful book with its great case studies that teach skills that could benefit any one of us, actually, since, as Dr. England points out, you never know who might be suffering silently and needlessly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A synthesis of two long-separate topics:PTSD & Intimate Relationships
There is a substantial clinical literature on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and certainly there are many clinical as well as popular books about improving marriages. However, Dr. England has written what I see as the first self-help book which brings these two domains together. I think it's an important book for this reason alone, and I believe others will follow now that it's defined.PTSD/Relationship -- it's really more than the sum of the two parts, since we learn a lot about relationships when they're under stress, and about individual struggles when in a family context. We can see how communications get distorted, resentments build, and how both people in a relationship become increasingly different from the "real people" they know themselves to be(and previously liked ... though now less and less).Instead of mirroring back at one another their positive qualities, validating and enhancing one another, they get caught-up in distorted images and senseless, mutually hurtful efforts to "set things straight" that only make matters worse:blaming, attacking, diminishing one another's self-worth, escalating anger, etc.

I think readers will find understanding and comfort in this well-written book, feelings of validations that they very much need. However, theyalso will find useful tools for working on lasting relationship change.Dr. England includes many useful references and resources as well.I will recommend the book to my clients.Let's convince her to write a workbook as her next undertaking!

Product Description
Being "so stressed" has to be the most common description for a woman today -- no matter your age or marital status, whether you have a career or work inside the home. Stress is the gift of modern life that keeps on giving, because, even after you've gotten through a stressful day or week, the effects on your body and mind linger, whether you're aware of them or not. And they can build up and make you sick -- unless you do something to stop them. That's where So Stressed, a landmark new guide to women's health, can help.

The realization that stress was the most common cause of all the different symptoms and ailments that their patients were coming to them for was a eureka moment for internationally renowned OB-GYN physicians Stephanie McClellan and Beth Hamilton. To find out how stress could be the root cause of diseases as disparate as chronic pain, gynecological disorders and depression, asthma and metabolic disorders, Drs. McClellan and Hamilton embarked on a unique medical quest -- they wanted to find the latest discoveries emerging around the world in the science of stress and put them all together in treatments to help their patients now. Their urgent mission took them to the leading researchers at the best medical centers around the world, where they learned the exciting findings that they reveal in this fascinating new approach to women's health, So Stressed.

With information from the medical and psychological sciences of stress that no other practicing physician or clinician has implemented, So Stressed shows you what stress is doing to every cell in your body, how it disrupts the intricate balance of your body's systems, and most important what you can do, starting today, to restore your body's health and prevent yourself from getting sick. Drs. McClellan and Hamilton -- who are widely sought after for their compassionate manner and educational approach to their patients -- have treated more than 16,000 women in their shared three decades of medical practice. Through their timely research and unique, integrative approach to patient care, they have developed four groundbreaking stress types, each with unique patterns for potential illness and disease -- presented here for the first time -- that you can use to identify the ways that stress is affecting your body and mind.

Once you know your unique stress profile, the doctors help you learn new ways to see and respond to stress, reduce it and its effects on your body, and even prevent the life-threatening illnesses it causes. You'll find the right program -- specifically designed for the way you fit into your stress type -- with prescriptive advice for the best mental relaxation techniques, nutrition, exercise, and restoration practices for you. Filled with instructive and inspiring case stories from their patients' and their own life experience, Drs. McClellan and Hamilton bridge the gap between the lab bench and the bedside in this comprehensive program for total health. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening read that validates unique responses to stress
I got this book at the library, devoured it, and now am buying a copy to keep at home as a reference. The authors do a fantastic job of introducing the non-medical person to the interaction between our endocrinal (hormonal) systems and our nervous systems, and how to restore balance between the two.As somebody who "burned out" during an over-demanding career and is now paying the health consequences, I only wish I'd understand these principles ten years ago, before I went too far down that road.I have been implemented many of the authors' recommendations and see the book as a key fixture in my own personal transformation into better personal health. Do yourself a favor and read it, then tell a friend what you learned.

5-0 out of 5 stars individualized advice about dealing with stress...
I found this book to be incredibly helpful because it's not a "one size fits all" prescription for dealing with stress. The authors emphasize that we manifest our reactions to stress differently, and they create four profiles for how people manifest their reactions to chronic stress.I found it easy to recognize myself in one of the profiles (and a little humbling!) and I have been finding their advice for helping myself to be useful and clear.I like the combination of "case study" information (stories from their patients' lives) alongside medicalresearch informationAs with any book about health, you have to read it in the context of what you already know about yourself and you body. However, I found this book helped me think about my chronic stress in new ways and provided me with some new tools for helping myself become healthier.I have bought copies to give as gifts and I think this is a book that I and others will return to over and over again. Also, although it is labeled as pertaining to women, much of the information is useful to men as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The answers..............
Dr. McClellan is a wonderful, caring doctor. In this book, with Dr. Beth Hamilton, they expose the crazy called 'stress' that women live with and suffer due to.
While some of it gets a little technical and big wordy - the answers come thru loud and clear.Women need to take care of themselves! We are busy taking care of everyone else that there is no time left for ourselves - NOW it is time to take care of ourselves!
With practical advice and suggestions they provide a game plan to recreate a healthy life.
This book also provided some answers as to my daughters stress and ability/unability to deal with it due to fetus and early life stress experienced by me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got this for my wife...
I got this book for my wife after seeing the authors on Good Morning America....My wife is not an avid reader of non-fiction but she devoured this book! And more than that she immediately began implementing the suggestions from it....As a result she has been able to learn where she learned how to deal with stress from her mother, and see how she has patterned it for our two children. She has begun to change her eating habits and is beginning to actually reduce her response to the coniderable stress in her life. A great book that has really helped!

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Stress Relief Book Ever

4-0 out of 5 stars Part of our Wellness Program
I am Chair of our Wellness Committee at work and use this book to include bits and pieces in our company newsletter and throughout the week to help staff understand they are not along and that stress can be handled. So far I think it is working great, I appreciate the articles are short and to the point and that allows me to highlight important points without writing a page of information.I would recommend this book, thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite books!
I think I've only done one review in my life so far, but I felt compelled to write a review for this book after I saw that only one person reviewed it! I love this book! I'm surprised to see that not many other people have reviewed it! It is a simple, easy read, with each 'chapter' only consisting of 2-3 pages at most. Each topic/chapter is well-written with good examples and action-items at the end for you to take (if you wish). The best part about this book is you can scan through and just pick a topic that you are having problems with, and read that topic only. However, I find that once I read one topic, I can't help but go to the next topic. I find myself going back to this book every 6 months to re-read it, just to remind myself of the little things I can do to help relieve my stress and make my life a little better. He provides actual concrete solutions and exercises rather than just ramble on about the theory behind why you're stressed. This is one of those books that I'll keep in my bookcase for years to come. If you have any bit of stress, this book is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and easy to read. Loved it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, Dr. Colbert does not condemn contraceptives
Very good advice except that he doesn't have a problem with contraceptives...so there's not a true pro-life message.

People with psoriasis might not like what he has to say about what foods to eliminate from their diet.I know that I like tomatoes and tomato-based sauces too much to give them up.I'd rather have the psoriasis.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Stress
Discipline Without Stress has helped in many teaching situations.I highly recommend if you are looking something different than the traditional marbles in a jar to get students do what they should be doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating a ladder from which to gauge internal progress
I particularly enjoyed the part about viewing failure as information. That an exactly right comes from a series of approximately rights. When we view each step we take in life from a reflective standpoint, we are able to move closer and closer to who we want to be.To consider a mistake to be a failure with the resulting punishment, can be very debilitating and detrimental to further growth.
This book gave me some ways to express the concept that we do the best we know at any given moment, and when I can recognise a mistake and take pause to ask for a better way, I am able to take responsibility for my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, convincing, and full of useful, practical strategies
Although I have not put this book to a classroom application, it is absolutely packed full of clear, well-researched and practical knowledge. The author has both real-life teaching/school/human relations experience plus extensive knowledge of pedagogical theory and human pyschology that has been combined into a clear and concise book. I would highly recommend this book to any teacher, parent, or anyone dealing in human relations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
After having tried it all, this one is the best system. You have to stick with the book and you need to join the group on this (see Marvin Marshall's website) in order to understand. If you are through spending a fortune on stuff that doesn't work, spend just a few more dollars and get this book.It is the last book you'll need on classroom management.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all who raise, educate, heal, or influence our children
This is a common sense and logical read. The main ideas seems to make sense on so many levels.Basically our children are not being forced to think and prevoke some thought before reacting. This reading keys in on the need for consistent inner guidance versus short term exterior material motivations or threats that does nothing to teach children well.It helps the adults in their lives become better, more mature, thoughtful stewards of our children's growth and in handling behavior issues in ways that will benefit their overall wellbeing as well as our own.In retrospect, our children will grow not only by our own example, but also by the tools and skills we pass along to them for the most successful and enriching life journey experience possible. In the process, they are learning how to be and how to act, they are learning how to make mindful, self-respecting, civil, responsible choices for themselves in response to the environment around them. Today's high paced, competitive, global world requires our children to reason well and make good choices as they find their place in it so they are not getting lost or taken advantage of in the shuffle of it all.It is better that our children learn diffirently and more thoughtfully than past generations in an effort to reduce the amount of dysfunction and social-emotional challenges we as a society have been facing far too long.Education is a beautiful thing so that history does not continue to repeat itself and spread to the next generation so that we can continue to achieve betterment. We need to grow civility and personal accountability in our culture which is so diverse in a civilized and responsible way and it begins at home and in our educational institutions.

Thanks Dr. Marshall for clearly articulating and outlining these very principles in your book. The book also introduces the foundation of the "how to's" so we can begin utilizing this approach and changing some not so good ineffective practices we have acquired along the way which continue to confuse, belittle and dumb down our kids.Raise the bar and your kids will adjust. If you raise it high enough they will never fall to the bottom and they will love you for it later on in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book Made The List
I have a list of about 20 books that are required reading for my sons; this book made the list. Here's why:

He makes a very good point in the book that everyone needs to hear:though I don't have any particular disrespect for professional ball players, the idea that their work involves great amounts of stres is a little far fetched to me.You strike out in the world series and next week you can open a car dealership if you haven't snorted your salary in cocaine. You make the wrong mistake in the ER (as nurse, technician, book keeper, or telephone operator...not just as physician) and somebody dies; you don't get to go open a car dealership the next week.

In spite of this fact, the model he used and the lessons he learned coaching professional skaters and ball players to a better performance works very well for nurses, and salesmen, and stay-at-home fathers and mothers, and policeman, fireman, and whatever it is you do.

I worked for 12 years in the ER and this book helped me reach the point where I could move through a very busy day and stay calm and focused with energy in reserve when I left the hospital.

I also recommend the book to my patients (now, I practice endocrinology and bariatrics).Nothing keeps you moving towards your goals better than keeping yourself honest with yourself about what you're actually doing (For example:good research shows that people greatly underestimate the amount they eat and overestimate the amount of exercise they do).I've used an adaptation of his record keeping system to help my patients drop the pounds and continue to use the record system myself even though I don't do ER medicine any more. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It'll make you look at life a little differently.
An interesting look at how we react to stress in our daily life. It has a very self-help kinda vibe to it but that didn't bother me too much. I enjoyed the ideas of how to control our reactions to stressful situations and feel it's good advice.

Hopefully it will make you look at life a little differently for a little while at least.

The Inner Game of tennis was a pivotal book for me and helped me not only with tennis but athletics in general.

The positive reviews here have whetted my appetite, and I also found a great interview with one of the authors here:[...]

It's on my wish list!

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of wisdom and practical tools!
This book covers some fundamental concepts about stress such as the body's reaction to stress, the impact of stress on our physical health, the importance of relaxation or "gearing down," and the difference between our highly evolved cerebral cortex and our reptilian or bird brain.

But this book also offers the vital concept of the true internal "Stress Maker," a huge "toolbox" of practical techniques to help readers deal with their own Stress Maker, a wealth of real-world stories, and personal exercises throughout the book to help readers gain insight and start practicing new skills.

The book is also packed with different metaphors that will resonate with different readers, including your "tree of stability," your "personal shield," your "sword of clarity," and more.

As a result of the breadth and depth of information in this book, readers will likely personalize the set of lessons or techniques that they choose to apply in their own lives. For example, some readers might complete all the exercises while others opt to skip them altogether. But this book will likely offer something of value for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of stress and a more effective set of tools for dealing with it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Profound Book - A Must Read
i heard about the book while listening to Dr Hart and his daughter teach at an AACC Conference.i am engaged in an occupation which involves high levels of daily stress and did survive a heart attack so the prospect of reading an informative book of this nature peaked my interest.i must report it was a profound book of: needed information, challenging-supported truth, tender understanding, immediate and long term solutions and finally an "it is up to you" finish.Thank you Dr Hart. T.F.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful information
When I began experiencing bizarre physical symptoms several years ago, I began getting very frightened.Cancer?MS?Lupus?Brain tumor?

Test after medical test showed me to be quite healthy, with no discernable problems. When doctors suggested "stress," I dismissed it as a junk diagnosis, thinking "why don't you just say you don't know instead of blaming stress for everything."Turns out, though, that they were right.

Stress is much, much worse for us than previously imagined. It does not just affect us primarily mentally or with the occassional headache or indigestion...it can profoundly alter our body to the point of near disability.I know -- because it has happened to me.

This book came as a godsend in helping me understand what was happening to my body, and why.It was the book that opened my eyes to the connection between stress and the adrenal glands, and the profound affect that prolonged exposure to stress can have on our hormonal system. Many physicians poo-poo the idea that the adrenals can eventually become exhausted because they reason that adrenaline goes up (not down) when the body is under stress.Hart shows that while such reasoning is correct, it is only half correct.Eventually, the body can no longer sustain the continual demand for over-production of adrenaline and the body will crash. When that happens, the physical results are profoundly severe.

Although Hart spends less time in the book dealing with the most serious stage of stress exhaustion - adrenal depletion - he was the first author that alerted me to this very real condition, and hence helped me on my journey to finding out what was wrong and how to get much-needed help for recovery from a debilitating condition.

Most have been conditioned to believe that stress will only manifest itself as eventual coronary problems. While this is true for some people - the heart attack out of the blue - there are a host of other physical symptoms that while perhaps not life-threatening, can render a person's quality of life completely destroyed. There is a significant body of evidence, for example, to show that chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia are simply the body's response to prolonged, chronic, unresolved stress.

I believe that anyone who deals with stress - from mild to severe - will benefit from this book.Knowing the dangers and warning signals of too much stress are vitally important in today's ultra-demanding pace of life.

My only critique is that I wished he would have discussed the concept of adrenal fatigue or adrenal exhaustion in more detail. However, that topic is adequately addressed in other books - particularly "Chronic Fatigue Unmasked" by Gerald Poesnecker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adrenaline and Stress/the Exciting New Breakthrough That Helps You Overcome Stress Damage
I recently purchased this book after reviewing it for use in a course that I am teaching entitled, Crisis Counseling. I have found it a highly effective tool to use in educating about the long term harmful affects of excessive amounts of adrenaline on the human body.I appreciate its straightforward approach to telling the truth about how easy it is to become an adrenaline junkie and the importance of learning to relax. This book is a must read for all physicians, counselors, pastors, and other members of the helping professions who work with individuals who are in crisis. If you are an individual who lives life on the edge, always running in high gear, Stress and Adrenaline will teach you invaluable tools to help you learn to relax and live longer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
This book was very helpful to me to help me understand how I have been "distressed". Too much stress and adrenaline are not good for a person. You have to have valleys of recovery built into your life. Your can't be in high gear all the time. I still use this book when stressful times in my life happen. It is easy to understand and was very helpful to me. I would highly recommend it to others. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, informative, wise, enjoyable.
Although Mr. Hart is a Christian, it isn't until the last chapter that he writes about Christianity's effect on reducing stress. This is intentionally and effectively done.Nonetheless, I found this book incredibly informative with lots of practical advice well explained.I immediately realized why it took me the first four days of a vacation to settle down and why I tend to have a stress headache on most saturdays.I have intentionally tried a few of his suggestions and they work.I recommend this book to anyone, especially those who have been accused of being type A.I am not type A and I am a Christian.I found this book very enjoyable. ... Reveals the powerful and undermining effects of stress on good decision making-and what leaders can do about it

The ability to make sound and timely decisions is the mark of a good leader. But when leaders with otherwise strong track records suddenly begin making poor decisions-as seen in the recent corporate scandals that rocked the business world-the impact can be widespread. In The Stress Effect, leadership expert Henry L. Thompson argues that stress is often the real culprit behind this leadership failure: when leaders' stress levels become sufficiently elevated-whether in the boardroom or on the front line of a manufacturing process-their ability to effectively use their emotional intelligence and cognitive ability in tandem to make wise decisions is significantly impaired. Until now, experts have argued that increasing your emotional intelligence will help you cope with and manage stress. This book suggests that stress actually blocks access to your emotional intelligence as well as your cognitive ability, two critical components in the decision-making process. This book

  • Shows how stress adversely affects the performance of even the most savvy leaders
  • Reveals the truth about one of the prime factors behind the current failure of leadership
  • Offers a solid prescription for building a "stress resilient system" and arms leaders with best practices for managing specific stressors that take the biggest toll on decision making
  • Is written by an award-winning organizational psychologist and leadership consultant whose clients include a roster of Fortune 500 companies

A groundbreaking and insightful resource for leaders, The Stress Effect reopens the dialogue on stress, its effect on decision making, and what to do about it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stress as a major cause for leadership failute
With stress levels increasing at an accelerated pace, this book is timely, well written, engaging, and based on sound research and real business examples. Of particular interest is the information that clearly shows why and how stress impacts on the decision-making process of leaders because of their reduced ability to access emotional intelligence.

The last chapter, The Seven Best Practices to Prevent Stress, offers great advice, techniques and strategies to reduce stress.

The only aspect that is missing in the book is an investigation into how excessive and futile thinking contributes to stress and what to do about it. Stress begins in our own minds and can only be reduced and managed when we change the relationship to our own thinking. A useful companion guide to The Stress Effect: Why Smart Leaders Make Dumb Decisions--And What to Do About It could be Think Less Be More:Mental Detox for Everyone which shows how to achieve this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dense Book for Solid Leaders
Stress and tension cause smart people to make stupid decisions.I doubt that surprises anyone. What surprises me, however, is how many studies and experiences prove that the answers to paralyzing stress are fairly simple for anyone with a solid head on their shoulders.Henry L. Thompson presents the tools and techniques that let leaders keep their cool and make decisions even under the most adverse circumstances.

This information-dense book provides more knowledge and detail than you may have ever realized you need to ensure good decisions when the world turns against you.Thompson starts with a dense exposition of how stress causes poor decisions. His anchor point is Captain Sullenberger and his Miracle on the Hudson. What brought that flight in safe, when equally experienced pilots may well have crashed tragically?

From there he proceeds into a complicated investigation of the most current neuropsychology, and what we know about how the brain prioritizes concerns. We all push aside concerns we consider unimportant, not because we are irresponsible, but because we only have so much processing power.Like a computer, we can only do so much. But unlike a computer, we can decide what is worth our time and energy.

Thompson finishes with a seven-step regimen to keep your brain at peak performance, and you in a position to make the best possible leadership choices. His pointers are no collection of mere self-help platitudes. He lays out a menu of difficult self-diagnostic questions that you need to answer honestly if you hope to keep yourself competitive. This book is hard, but that's what makes it worth your time.

Not everyone will be able to read this intense, difficult book. The density will scare off the uncommitted. But I think Thompson would be okay with that: he writes for those who lead, not those who think they ought to lead.If you organize, command, teach, or guide, you need this book, to make sure every choice you make is the one you ought to make. And you owe it to yourself to read it slowly.

Review
Dr. Thompson has authored numerous books and articles while working for various organizations specializing in leadership potential, mentoring, and selection, as well as, consulting through transitions and succession planning on decision making, stress management, and organizational development. (2010, p.315) His personal experience spans from the battlefield to the board room from determining ones emotional intelligence through systems thinking and more. Currently Dr. Thompson is president, founder, and CEO of HPS [High Performing Systems], an internationally known management consulting and training firm.

The Stress Effect uses many modern day examples of how various leaders have made decisions during times of stress, and sometimes duress, and the outcomes of same. The book begins with one of the most poignant stories of recent times with U.S. Airways flight 1549 that was forced to land in the Hudson River after running into a flock of birds shortly after takeoff. The decisions and actions made by Captain Sullenberger managed to land his engine less plane safely and save lives.(2010, Introduction) There are critical lessons that all leaders and managers can take from this tough decision making example.

Chapter one (2010) opens with the financial meltdown of 2007 and how that highlighted many leadership shortfalls, and the outcome of bad decisions, in dealing with this crisis and more. According to Dr. Thompson, this pathetic scenario reminded us of how important it is to have "...the right person in the right job." (p.16) Dr. Thompson adheres to a Sigma Six mentality whereby one can, at least to some degree, "predict the potential success of a leader." (p.19) Obviously many on Wall Street and elsewhere could learn much from this systems thinking program and following the causal loops to logical ends. Furthermore, he [Dr. Thompson] states that "Leaders are not created with equal amounts of all abilities and cannot be randomly assigned or promoted." This lacking in critical abilities may have come into play in this debacle as well.

Organizations can be broken down into five basic categories according to function: production, tactical, organizational, strategic, and visionary. (2010, p.21) Production is the most basic level and least complex. Tactical is next in terms of complexity, and so on, with the pinnacle being visionary or the most complex of this strata. (pgs.22-3) It is imperative that leaders in these areas be an exact match for their job. Doing so means finding the right mix of knowledge, skills, experience, and decision making that comes from learned and innate abilities. (p.24)

Learned abilities can range from leadership skills that are industry specific to a combination of business and employment experiences that lead to making consistently good decisions.Innate abilities, according to Dr. Thompson, fall into four categories: "cognitive ability, emotional intelligence, motivation, and personality." (2010, p.25) The innate abilities are those that determine how a leader will interact with others, approach the task of problem solving, and making decisions. This all boils down to how one processes the information as it becomes available to them. (p.26) Data collected from various studies tends to suggest that achievement and drive are innate in most leaders. (p.28)

Dr. Thompson has created many charts and diagrams that simplify the entire decision making and problem solving process which he says should be logical and founded on a fully understanding the problems to be solved and/or the decisions to be made, including the ramifications of such. (2010, pgs.31-33) Strategies for doing so are either, rational or intuitive and can take place consciously or unconsciously depending on the situation at hand and the leadership experience of the individual making the decisions.

One such model is what Dr. Thompson calls the "Perception-Appraisal-Motivation-Action" model or PAMA. (2010, p.41) PAMA is tied to ones cognitive intelligence or their ability to quickly assimilate, factor, and recall knowledge that allows them to logically siphon through complex situations and locate the best decision. (p.53) Dr. Thompson offers many tests that can aptly measure the cognitive intelligence of leaders based on an array of factors ranging from age to gender to memory, and more. (pgs. 59-66) All can be useful tools in consulting and/or mentoring at the leadership level in businesses and organizations.

There are chapters that go into detail about what specific portions of the brain control in humans and how emotions interact with decisions and actions. (2010, Ch.3) Again, there are a plethora of tests, charts, and tables offered by Dr. Thompson via his extensive research that can, at least with some degree of certainty, measure such things, and to the degree allowable, ascertain how good one might be at leading.
Chapter four (2010) introduces how stress affects our decision making process and what chemically occurs inside our bodies in relation to that stress. Chapter five goes into detail about the various types of stress and how long term stress degrades our abilities to make good decisions. Chapter six talks about management of stress and building our "stress management capacity", which Dr. Thompson says [paraphrase] is the amount of stress a leader can effectively function with at any given time. (p.172) Resilience is the heading for chapter seven. Commitment, control, and challenge are the capstone of a leaders ability to be resilient. (p.198) The remainder of this valuable book targets ways to prevent stress and how one can recalibrate their focus to maintain control over stress.

This was one of the best books on leadership and stress that I have ever had the pleasure to read and review. I would suggest it as a text for all leadership, management, and business courses at the Master's level and above in universities around the world. Thank you Dr. Thompson for a very comprehensive and fresh perspective on this evolving topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will appeal to the leader in everyone - interesting and valuable insight
Dr. Thompson has gathered up an exquisite, bone-deep understanding of the science of leadership and how the efficacy of the decision-making process is vulnerable when the leader is under extreme stress. The book is thorough and as rich and complex as the expert needs it to be.It's also very easy for the lay person to latch onto swiftly. I expected it to be more theory than practice and in fact, it's both.Dr. Thompson's ARSENAL for developing a stress-resilient system (his seven best pratices) should be embraced by every professional in the working world - whether she's flying an F-18 or teaching kindergarden. Dr. Thompson shakes up the decision-making snow globe and shows us some very real hob goblins that may prohibit our high performing leaders from making best choices: Emotions, sleep deprivation, the "chemical bath", the evil twin, the crazy threshold. He stresses the importance of training our future leaders to be masters of decision-making and capable of performing in all conditions.Amazingly, he manages to do so without giving us vertigo. What he does provide is invaluable insight and the blueprint for helping to build successful leaders. ... The book was shipped in the expected time frame, was packaged well, and the condition of the book was as told me.I would do business with the seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nightlight for Dark Times
A generous thoughtful unravelling of the causes of the "age of anxiety" written in a highly readable way. A delight if you love reading & your state of mind allows sufficient concentration. It is the bookish equivalent of having an understanding, gentle companion sitting at one's bedside during an illness.

3-0 out of 5 stars One's relationship with God
I was astonished when I read page 447: "Those who say they are indifferent (to God) are usually angry or contemptuous, and that's a problem."

In light of all the anger and contempt we see today from those who are definitely not indifferentto God, I see more peace, kindness and health elsewhere. I think this particular writing expresses a personal andunprofessional bias for a psychologist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful
Well worth reading if you suffer from chronic, generalized anxiety. While this book is not a substitute for professional help, it certainly gives suffers of anxiety and depression an excellent insight into the many causes of these disorders and offers ways to temper the effects of these afflictions.I would say this book is a very good adjunct to individual or group therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, comprehensive, a winner
This book has been a godsend to me. The author describes & discusses so many aspects of stress, and why we are so stressed-out in the early 21st century. The volume is densely packed with information, & I find that it helps me to link up my expectations of life, with the realities of limits, relationships, physical and emotional care, and the kinds of situations that help anyone to be healthy - or perpetually stressed. I am not done with this book yet; I want to savor & absorb all that it has to offer. I highly recommend it to you. It's a great read and a wonderful ongoing reference book. When you start to have stress problems, talk to someone you love and trust, stay positive, have a laugh, stay active, stick with daily routines, and take care of yourself. You can take care of yourself with these body boss skills:

•    Belly breathing
•    Changing what you are thinking about
•    Relaxing with positive self-talk
•    Letting go and getting loose
•    Aromatherapy
•    Acupressure

Kids will be happier and healthier when they are the boss of their bodies and can take care of most of their stress on their own. Product Description
The discovery of a partner's infidelity is heart-wrenching and traumatic. In TRANSCENDING POST-INFIDELITY STRESS DISORDER (PISD), Dennis Ortman likens the psychological aftermath of sexual betrayal to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in its origin and symptoms, including anxiety, irritability, rage, emotional numbing, and flashbacks. Using PTSD treatment as a model, Dr. Ortman presents steps to recovery from the pain of infidelity. With the author's PISD system, readers will find a structure to help them categorize emotions, face their rage, make important life decisions, and find wholeness, peace, and forgiveness. ... You are not going crazy your feelings are justified and with knowledge and support you can survive and have the potential for growth!!! Remember one thing your old relationship is over but there is the potential for it being better after healing takes place. It will be difficult to believe in the early days of discovery but know that you aren't going crazy and you have a right to feel whatever it is you're feeling.
This book is written with some religious perspective and may not be for everyone but helped me through the painful part of the discovery and recovery! Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Accurate, Most Helpful, Best Tools for Healing and Awareness Available
This book is easy to use to find the information you need quickly. This book gives tools for healing in a format that is easily accessible.Ortman outlines the symptoms of post traumatic stress quickly, and explains them well.I would think that if someone wants the information in this book, then a lengthy read to find helpful information would be tedious.

This book is a long-overdue clarification of what can really happen in response to infidelity, to contrast the previous limited view that the partner of someone who was unfaithful is automatically codependent (implying that they had a sickness and control issues).Ortman, on the other hand provides compassionate insight into understanding the traits that make one more vulnerable to post-traumatic responses so that people feel empowered. His seemingly accurate approach applies the post traumatic stress model to infidelity responses with uncanny clarity. This is a very valuable compendium of information for quick insight and long-term healing.

This book by Ortman offers sensitive and well-aimed tools. It can also serve as a reference for someone experiencing post traumatic stress because of abusive relationships in general (traumatic work relationships, betrayals, abandonment, traumatically betrayed friendships, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly informative book!!
This book has changed my life. It helped me to recognize that after suffering from infidelity for 10 years, that I can finally put a name to what I have.I have worked through the book and feel the beginnings of forgiveness. If you are angry or PISD I would stongly suggest you read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transcending Post Infidelity Stress disorder
This book is a lifesaver for now, I have just suffered on the recieving end a relationship infidelity and now understand that it is a devestating life event. This book puts all the unexplained emotional behaviors associated with a cheating mate in perspective.I am not nuts, just wounded.I hope when finished with this book I will have recovered enough to feel some of lifes happiness again.

This author is on-line with a vocal interview and is quite the speaker as well, he is what he writes.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to have the pet you always wanted
Though spendy this book and DVD are great to have for learning and reference.I appreciate the "realness" of the DVD and the gentle, firm and positive approach.Does your vet treat your pet the same way?I am now equipped to better evaluate who cares for my pet and greatly encouraged that what so many of the "dominance" gurus do can be so harmful. If you cringe when you see dogs being jerked around by choke chain collars, zapped with electrical charges, yelled at, scolded and other wise "worked over" because their guardians feel their authority is threatened, then this is for you.Positive reinforcement and just good ol' consistent, positive, and upbeat attitude can work wonders. Dr. Yin shows how to use these positive attributes to help your pet become the confident companion you want.I also recommend any book by Patricia McConnell who recommended this book on her website.

4-0 out of 5 stars Low Stress Handling, Restraint and Behavior Modification of dogs and Cats
I'm having a difficult time getting through this book. Its not a bad thing, Dr Yin, just writes in such a way that you start thinking about what you just read. So, my mind keeps wondering off. It is easy to find something that your looking for in the book though, so getting back on track is easy.

The only bad thing was the book directs you to the DVD through out the chapter. At first I felt like I needed to stop and view it. In fact you can wait until the end of the chapter and then watch the DVD of the whole chapter.

The information is great and she does not speak over my head. I'm very greatful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for veterinarians and veterinary technicians
This is a fantastic book and DVD for veterinarians, veterinary technicians or anyone in the animal field. I'm so impressed with Dr. Yin and her compassionate care/handling of pets and her training methods. I really appreciate the color photographs throughout the entire book. We are using this book as our guide for better handling and restraint of the dogs and cats at our clinic. Dr. Yin needs her own show!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this book
Having recently taken a "Restraint" course from a veterinary technology school where I felt we manhandled the animals and frightened them, this book was a breath of fresh air.I hope to be able to spread Dr. Yin's techniques to other vet clinics.I plan to use her videos for staff meetings to enlighten others who have taken the traditional classes on restraint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it
Excellent book with techniques that align with the AVSAB recommendations. The DVD was also helpful.Tons of pictures and easy to understand and apply. My only complaint is the softcover did have some very minor damage to it when it arrived - nothing major but this is an expensive book and I expected it to arrive in brand new/perfect condition. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Personality really does affect Potty Training
Perfect in helping you distinguish which approach to take or rather not take with your child based on his or her personality type. I recommend it to everyone. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because it doesn't give you step by stepd directions on how do potty train each different style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great techniques that apply to more than potty training
What I found most helpful about this book was that it provided 5 broad categories of personality types, and then recommended techniques that suit each type. My child easily fell into the "strong-willed" category. Having a better understanding of my daughter's temperament allowed me to tailor potty-training techniques to her personality. She had it down within three days (though we're still using pull-ups at night/naptime). And having a better understanding of her personality type will come in handy in the future as we teach her other things in life. There's also a section in the book that lists signs of potty-training readiness, and the ages at which children generally start showing those signs. That was very helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but not realistic
The book had very good ideas, and I liked the fact that they try to teach you based on your childs personality type. According to the book my child is "Strong Willed" and it basically tells you that he will potty train himself on his own schedule and there is not really much you can do about it. As a mother of a 3 year old who has basically tried everything being told to sit back and wait wasnt very helpful for me. The book had good ideas and it may work for some but it was a waste of $20.00 for me.

2-0 out of 5 stars No real training tips, other than going naked.
This book is good if you want to use the naked technique.I, however, would like more options. It lacks detailed instructions on other ways of potty training. The book goes on to categorize your child into a certain personality and how to use different methods accordingly. But, it seems the authors direct all personalities toward the naked method.Pointless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best potty training book
I read several potty training books and this was clearly the best of the bunch. It is as much a book about having perspective as a parent as it is about potty training - it really shows you how important it is to understand your child in order to find the right strategies for potty training. The same is true for all parenting, isn't it?I found this book very informative and very comforting in its approach. This is not a one size fits all and is a must-read for thoughtful parents. It gives you perspective on how to go about this process without unnecessary stress on yourself or your child. However, if you have to be told every single step how to parent or potty train, or if you need an exact script on what to say when you are parenting, then this book is probably not for you - if you are one of those kinds of parents, then probably no parenting book will satisfy you.If you can learn to understand your child, which is what this book helps you do (I think the author is a child psychologist), then you can figure out the right strategy for practically any parenting challenge - even potty training!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Instruction Manual & Good Reference Book
Let me just start out by saying that this book is in the Top Tier of tech manuals in both its design and its execution. She understands educational theory. In each chapter she makes good transitions from the general to the specific. The numerous tables throughout the book will make this a solid reference book to keep at my desk.

I appreciate the fact that she wrote in a conversational style, shared her opinions, and some of the wisdom of her experience. The numerous tables throughout the book that summarize various functions and dialog boxes will make this book will make this a good reference book to hold on to.

When my company had Crystal Report 9, I bought both the Dummies book and the SAMs book.Dr. Murphy's treatment of the subject matter is vastly superior to both of these books.

There are a few weaknesses that should be mentioned. Some exercises in later chapters build upon exercises completed in earlier chapters. This is OK if you did what I did and start at the beginning of the book and work your way through. If you don't use the naming conventions she specifies, it will trigger problems in later chapters. If you are one who skips around looking for solutions to particular problems, this could be a small obstacle for you. There is a good work around for this. She has worked all of these exercises herself and you can download them from the publisher's website. There are instructions for this on page 1-20. Make sure to put this in a separate folder from the one you are saving your exercises in.You can then just grab her solution from an earlier chapter and go from there.

Chapters 11 and 12 (out of 13) are noticeably not as well written as the first 10.By that point, I had gotten used and had come to expect detailed instructions for each procedure. In these two chapters the instructions were a little vague. There are a few places that steps are missing.

I spent approximately 3-4 hours working my way through each of the 13 chapters. That included time I spent playing with various functions in order to get a stronger feel for various functions. This book has empowered me to solve several data mining and reporting problems that I had. These advancements will probably save me the time invested this year. The savings and heightened productivity will continue in the years to come. This is well worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bad grammar and unprofessional writing
This author needs a good editor. The content is good, but I was distracted by the poor use of commas and the conversational writing style.

Examples:

"What I have discovered, as well as, many other Information Technology professionals, is that if you create a prototype..."

"The worst thing you can do in many cases, is give the users the impression that you know more abou their needs then they do. I am not saying that in some cases that you won't know more about their data, just don't give them that impression, if you know what I mean."

If you see no problem in the quotes above, you will probably love this book. It does contain a thorough introduction to Crystal Reports, so I am finding it helpful (despite frequent cringing).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
A little too drawn out. I wish she would have cut to the chase a few more times. But otherwise a good work book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginning User
I found this book to be very easy to understand and it follows a logical progression. I like the way it is set up to work with the training database that comes with the program (version 11).For someone new to Crystal Reports, it clearly explains the steps and it has very good graphics to go along with it.It helps to see that your screen looks the same as the book so you can see if you are doing it right. For me this manual has been very useful and I would highly recommend it to someone new to Crystal Reports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Folks with Prior Database Experience Experience
If you have experience using Access, SQL or other database software, this is the book to get you started with Crystal Reports. My impression is that those who are not satisfied with this book do not have experience with database development. As an Access user, this book is just what I need to get started. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This is an excellent book by a skilled group of authors/clinicians. The study of complex trauma is an important one. Much is yet to be learned. The authors provide important up to date information about this field of study.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read!
As a psychotherapist, I've struggled to treat various forms of Complex PTSD, in children & adults, for over 20 years, including borderline personality disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and current forms of multi-deployment Combat PTSD.

This recent collection of 20 articles from over 30 leading scholars, researchers and clinicians in the field will doubtless be the standard reference for Complex PTSD for many years. If you want to know more about how to understand, diagnose and treat Complex PTSD, START HERE!The articles are divided into three sections:overview, individual treatment approaches and strategies and - what a relief! - systemic treatment approaches and strategies.I say, "What a relief!", as often in reviews of treatment approaches, systemic approaches are given short shrift. And in my experience, systemic approaches are often VERY much needed, in some cases indispensible, for healing Complex PTSD, especially with children & teens, and especially with major problems with attachment - one sadly common hallmark of Complex PTSD.Each article has an extensive bibliography for those who want to know more.

The "Overview" section covers a satisfyingly large number of topics, including current approaches to understanding & defining Complex PTSD, overviews on best Practices with children & teens and with adults, cultural issues, risk management/treatment alliance and compassion fatigue/vicarious traumatizing.I want to compliment the editors for this last article.Few areas of psychotherapy are more prone to therapist burnout via PTSD by association than Complex PTSD.I strongly recommend that all clinicians who work significantly in this area become competent in assessing their own risks to compassion fatigue and take regular steps to manage this.

The "Individual Treatment Approaches and Strategies" section is refreshingly clear of biases toward one school. In addition to the standard Cognitive/Behavioral models, they also include articles on Experiential and Emotion-Focused Models, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and - useful for clinicians to know --Pharmacotherapy.Each article presents an initial summary, the model's basic assumptions/theory, reviews the research, discusses specific clinical applications and presents a case example and/or transcript. While not lengthy, they provide enough information for clinicians to decide whether to pursue an approach further.

The "Systemic Treatment Approaches and Strategies" section includes Richard Schwartz's "Internal Family Systems" as well as traditional multi-person "systems" treatments - Couple Therapy, Family Systems Therapy and Group Therapy. As with the individual treatment section, each section includes overview, basic assumptions, review of research, clinical applications and case example/transcript.Both the "Internal Family Systems" and the "Couple Therapy" articles are written by the field's giants - Schwartz and Susan Johnson & Christine Courtois. These two articles are gems for a moderate introduction.I found the family section more disappointing - particularly since so little has been "overviewed" in this field. But then this could be because my giants - Daniel Hughes (see Attachment-Focused Family Therapy and Building the Bonds of Attachment: Awakening Love in Deeply Troubled Children) and Heather Forbes & B. Bryan Post (See Beyond Consequences, Logic, and Control: A Love-Based Approach to Helping Attachment-Challenged Children With Severe Behaviors)- weren't even referenced.Nor did they reference the Grand Dame of RAD family approaches, albeit less therapy than parenting -- Nancy Thomas.(Her 2nd ed. of "When Love Is Not Enough: A Guide to Parenting Children with RAD" is a strong improvement, correcting parts in the 1st ed. which could be misinterpreted and lead families to become punishing.)

I have three complaints, which are serious, but which don't take away the true importance of this collection.First is that by emphasizing treatments ONLY, they mention, but do not emphasize as much as, in my experience, as is desperately needed, the difficult relationship-building aspects. In my experience, building specific Complex-PTSD relationships is more important than particular treatment approaches. For information about building relationships, and about more on accessing client strengths & feedback, I recommend Psychotherapy Relationships that Work: Therapist Contributions and Responsiveness to Patients and The Heart and Soul of Change: Delivering What Works in Therapy (Be sure to get the 2nd ed., 2010!).

Second is that large areas of Complex PTSD are neglected or even completely ignored. For example, as someone who treats Combat PTSD with soldiers (and their families) who've experienced three and four deployments of a year or more, I'm finding that the worse the deployment, and more deployments appear to be creating symptom clusters highly typical of Complex PTSD.Another area:as someone who treats individuals with Asperger's/High Functioning Autism, I find that many AS/HFA teens, especially, because of problems they face - socially, educationally, vocationally, in managing feelings, cognitively - also appear to develop symptoms quite similar to the Complex PTSD cluster.

Third is that I strongly wish that issues of addiction & various forms of self-medicating were more integrated into the Complex PTSD concept and into the treatment approaches.I find addictions/self-medicating distressingly common in Complex PTSD.And when present, addictions/self-medicating greatly complicates building treatment alliances and other relationships, the resources available to clients and finding approaches which integrate this into general Complex PTSD treatment.

Again, though, I want to emphasize:if you work in this field, I'd recommend buying this book. Its rampant pluralism of approaches is just what Complex PTSD needs. Here, like nowhere else in my clinical experience, one size does NOT fit all.Not only are different treatment approaches needed, commonly different modalities, such as family & group, are also needed. Therefore, knowing several approaches helps the vital process of individualizing treatments.

We can never know enough treatments for helping these people & their families. And "Treating Complex Traumatic Stress Disorders" can help us all find more approaches that can help us help more clients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be, but good
Somehow from the Amazon description of this book I thought that it was written by Judith Herman.I was very disappointed when I received it and discovered that she had only written the introduction.

The book is a collection of scholarly articles by many experts in the field. It is a valuable resource for anyone who treats clients with a history of complex trauma.

5-0 out of 5 stars Desperately Needed!
This book is THE ultimate resource and current "How To" fortrauma work that does Not fit neatly into a (now outdated) definition of "trauma". Complex trauma is a much more realistic picture of what we have been seeing in today's world. Thanks to the humility, dedication, and commitment of this remarkable list of contributors to share information, this specialty is in top form. I have been privileged to work with trauma survivors for many years and how wonderful to have the "creme de la creme" at my fingertips...How wonderful to have this extraordinary field of work given it's due. By the way, the chapter on Internal Family Systems Therapy is a real bonus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There is value to the stress in our lives
Yes, we are living in interesting times. At a point in our evolution where the person who shouts loudest believes s/he will be heard best, James O'Dea calls for a calm, cool, collected practice of the sublime art of dialogue and improvement. This is not a book about stress avoidance schemes or relaxation techniques-- rather it is an open invitation to engage in meaningful ways.Much like the transformative practice of Tai Chi, which uses one's opponent's energy to redirect the center, Creative Stress offers an approach to being that transcends the stoic or indifferentposition and offers a transformational alternative to "run and hide", disaffection or apathy. I was under a lot of personal stress at the point I first picked up this book. Some of the lessons I have learned have helped me greatly through my process of weeding through the clutter in my life and have brought new perspective and renewed commitment to the continuation of my undertakings. This book is a perfect lodestone for initiating conversations about the inner transformations that must occur in us before change and healing in the world can begin. I would very much like to gather a book discussion group together to see what other readings we will get out of this deep well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for service personell throughout society
A Wise man come forth to share the ways and means that transform ones attitude toward stress from one of dread to one of enlightened knowing and intense desire to personally experience trials and tribulations so these stresses can be their own inherent teacher.Thank You for the guidebook on how to fuel my own evolution through dynamic participation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stress happens....
Even though I have read only the first chapter of this book, I feel compelled to comment because I have met and heard James Odea lecture and have been moved to the core of my being by his experiences and how he has navigated his life. His authenticity is so powerful, I would recommend this book to everyone searching for help living in a real and meaningful way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delving beneath the symptoms of personal and planetary upheaval
In his new book "Creative Stress: A Path for Evolving Souls Living through Personal and Planetary Upheaval", James O'Dea has created a path to the deep force behind the symptoms of personal and collective chaos. He shows how to "shake hands" with and even "embrace" the force of stress in a way that can transform both our individual lives and our planet. He states, "...the antidote to negative stress is not relaxation but an inner peace that comes from being aligned with your core being."This is not a recipe book for sissies, but for those willing to embrace and engage with its message it offers the realization of personal and planetary freedom and creativity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational & Grounded
It is no easy accomplishment to be inspiring when fully grappling with the dire conditions currently plaguing the world; be that genocide, greed, economic meltdown or ecological collapse. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who wants to be able to be fully alive rather than numbing out with overwhelm. Both practical and visionary, Creative Stress is destined to make a great contribution toward healing the future.
