Product Description
Peterson's Stress Concentration Factors establishes and maintains a system of data classification for all of the applications of stress and strain analysis and expedites their synthesis into CAD applications. Substantially revised and completely updated, this book presents stress concentration factors both graphically and with formulas. It also employs computer-generated art in its portrayal of the various relationships between the stress factors affecting machines or structures. These charts provide a visual representation of the machine or structure under consideration as well as graphs of the various stress concentration factors at work. They can be easily accessed via an illustrated table of contents that permits identification based on the geometry and loading of the location of a factor.

For the new third edition, new material will be added covering finite element analyses of stress concentrations, as well as effective computational design. The book explains how to optimize shape to circumvent stress concentration problems and how to achieve a well-balanced design of structures and machines that will result in reduced costs, lighter products, and improved performance. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars New & Improved? NOT
I have access to Peterson's original book (older than me?) and to the first edition of this one, published in 1974. I recommend buying used copies of the old ones. They contain the same info and are easier to use since the charts are bigger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Stress Risers and Other Structural Phenomena
Absolutely essential book for anybody interested in stresses in notched bodies; structural analysts who like to use the 'back of the envelope', finite element analysts, fracture mechanicists; designers in aerospace, rail, heavy machinery, light machinery, medical devices, almost anything you can name. Book has been updated from the original; even if you have the original edition, this 2nd edition is well worth having for your engineering reference library.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BOOK
This is an excellent book. I found the book to be extremely informative and thoghtfully written. I recommend this book for anyone that is interested in applications of stress and strain analysis.

Product Description

Stress.

It's the quintessential buzz word of modern life. It hangs on everyone's lips from the first miles of the morning commute until the screeching alarm clock starts yet another day. Countless articles and studies tell the same story: lives controlled by unmanaged stress end early and none too well. This book describes a simple, straightforward method readers can learn and practice to literally transform stress by shifting the heart's own rhythms.

At the core of the HeartMath method of emotional regulation is the idea that, by focusing on positive feelings such as appreciation, care, or compassion, anyone can create dramatic changes in his or her heart rhythms. These changes precipitate a series of neural, hormonal, and biochemical events that dissipate stress and anger and lead to greater well-being. The benefits from using this system are remarkable and far-reaching: blood pressure drops, stress hormone levels fall, immune system activity increases, and anti-aging hormone levels rise. Through its interactive learning system, this book teaches readers to use the HeartMath method, enabling them to see and experience in real time how thoughts and emotions affect their heart rhythms. It teaches them how to engage their hearts to bring emotion, body, and mind into balance, and helps them stay in a zone of focused clarity, optimal health, and high performance. Changes brought about through this method are fast-acting and long-lasting-the perfect antidote to our chaotic and fast-paced lives.

(HeartMath is a registered trademark of the Institute of HeartMath.)Amazon.com Review
This follow up to The HeartMath Solution and Transforming Anger reveals how becoming aware of the heart’s innate intelligence can dramatically reduce stress and tension. Based on over thirty years of research showing that it is possible to shift the heart into a "positive rhythm" that signals the brain, causing both of them to synchronize to more effectively respond to stress. In this book, the authors provide readers with the tools to not only respond to stress more resiliently, but to literally transform stress into positive emotions and creative energy. The keys to doing so are the transformative exercises developed by Childre and his team of researchers at the HeartMath Institute. The scientifically-validated techniques they share are easy to understand, and with regular, committed practice, as evidenced by the many illustrative case histories throughout the text, offer many benefits. Far more than just another book on stress management, Transforming Stress offers readers the means to more consciously create joy and contentment in their lives, while regaining the energy and enthusiasm that are normally sapped by life’s daily stresses and tension.--Larry Trivieri Jr. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice
Good Advice.Easy to read.Somewhat duplicates the publisher's book on reducing hypertension.I can buy into some of the practical exercise but have trouble visualizing breathing through my heart. But I try.I do feel relaxed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspriring heart
Very interesting material. It's give s you an additional tool to make the law of attraction work for you and to make you feel good about your self. The techniques are veryeasy learn. But I think it's smartif you really go in to this to follow a two workshop and have the biofeedback equipment from it. This will cost you $500!

2-0 out of 5 stars Did we read the same book?
The last two reviewers seem to have read two different books - and none of them are the book that I read!
I only give two stars, because the book did not add much to what I already knew about the HeartMath solution. I own the EmWave and am working hard to recover from serious stress, and here there was too little practical help. In stead, the book is postulative ("after reading this book, you will be cured") so much that you start to wonder if they are trying to hypnotize you to get better.
I still have high hopes for the heart coherence technique, but this book was not the 'home run' I had hoped for. But maybe people who are deeply stressed really need personal coaching by HeartMath 'professionals' in the initial phase?

2-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously simplistic
I was astonished to discover that the entire crux of the "heartmath solution" is a very simple, rudimentary instruction in basic meditation. The meditation strategy is simply tarted up in corporate-speak (to obscure the fact that someone's advocating deep breathing to type A executives?)The "heartmath solution" has been explored exhaustively and in much greater, more beneficial detail in any number of excellent books on meditation, and most particularly, insight meditation. There really ought to be a disclaimer here, directing people really interested in meditating to seek other books.I would say that there are about two pages-worth of decent advice in this book--otherwise, it reads like a breathless promo for the "heartmath solution."

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, Precise, Informativeand Transforming! Outstanding! HighlyRecommended!
First, I would suggest to the highly critical, "bashing" reviewer preceeding this review, that they may have missed the message both regarding meditation practice and this book, which contains many pearls of wisdom, such as the distinction between "heart vulnerability," which is healthy, and "emotional vulnerability," which is unhealthy.Yet to absorb these and the many other excellent insights in the book and the heart coherence approach, it is actually necessary to read the entire book with equanimity, i.e, a "non-agitated" mind.

As a practicing clinical psychologist with 30-years of professional experience, and an equal number of years as a practicing meditator, I am profoundly grateful for the distilled wisdom inherent in "Stress Transformation", and Inow routinely recommend it to most of my patients.A concise, precise and lucid presentation of "Transforming Stress" that weaves all the threads of our multi-dimensional humanity into a tapestry of beautifully integrated and meaningful "pattern,"which greatly aids the digestion and bodily absorption of heart coherence and its rich nutritional value. A treasure of wellbeing and energy transformation... from existing to vibrant heart-centered Living!

The book also inherently highlights significant and profound differences between the heart coherence method, which so efficiently grounds us in our "embodied" multi-sensory experience, immediately promoting authentic wellbeing, and many methods of meditation which are really forms of "manipulative concentration" designed to bring about relaxing and blissful mind states. Yet other than very temporary and transient relief, these methods simply maintain the "trance" of self-dissatisfaction brought on by our social conditioning and frequent messages of disapproval leading to "dis-embodiment" and overly analytical, judgmental and striving minds seeking unattainable expectations and perfection and inadvertently perpetuating our conditioned discontent and unhappiness.

All the great wisdom teachings culminate in appreciating and expanding our hearts' capacity for love and compassion, and the heart coherence method and em-wave technology, so succinctly and beautifully articulated here, provide a short cut home. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
This book is a collection of questions and responses or articles originally written in a magazine. While I'm sure it has value, it was not what I expected. The pieces were too scattered in topic to do me any good.I get this kind of information from mamasource.com, a site for Mothers to ask questions & respond to other mothers. The other review of this book were glowing, which prompted me to buy it, but somehow I missed the kind of format it was.I returned it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I have both this and the other "Parenting with Less Stress" books, as well as "Love & Logic Magic for Early Childhood", and while for my own personal style some of the ideas and examples presented are more harsh than I would utilize, the concepts underlying them are solid and work amazingly well.

There was a time I wondered if I was going to be able to get through the twos and threes, and thanks to the Love & Logic concepts, not only did we survive them....we enjoyed them!

Find the Love & Logic book geared for your needs (less stress, for early childhood, for teens, etc)...you can't go wrong! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent examples of healing in action
This book was designed to discuss how EMDR(Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) could heal certain psychological stressors/traumas, "stuck ideas" if you will in people. Anxiety, being called stupid by your parents, horrific dating experiences, rape, abuse, car accidents, bad associations (you think your neighbor is the boogeyman) are all examples of problems therapists are faced with and use this wonderful technique to help their clients.
I am a licensed psychologist who had to undergo EMDR for a bad car accident and within 2 sessions I was able to drive without crying. In trianing, they make you as a therapist undergo what it feels like and I have to tell you I love it. When I am faced with an issue, I insist on having this and it moves you quickly through your problems. Instead of talking endlessly -you go from thought, to thought, from feeling to feeling from memory to memory and at the end, your body tension is gone. You have a renewed perspective, healthier, relaxed, confident and ready to face the world.
The book discusses cases in which the authors faced and how it healed. Excellent case examples and research are cited. A very usable book by both clinicians and clients. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and if you need help, please consider this with a therapist you trust.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Readable with True Life Accounts
An excellent introduction to the history of the development of EMDR as well as an orientation to the basic process with multiple applications and examples. Brief chapters and the writer's style make it a must read for anyone dealing with troublesome emotional issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars EMDR: The Breakthrough Therapy for Overcoming Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma
The book was in excellent condition. (I bought a used copy.) It came promptly and in very good condition. I am enjoying reading about this relatively new approach to dealing with psychological deficits of long-standing. The vendor of this book renders excellent service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Could it be a breakthrough?
I'm only a quarter of the way through this book, but if the therapy holds all the promise portrayed in the stories this author tells, it could be a major breakthrough. For the book, it's an easy read, without a lot of technical detail, and does a great job of describing the therapy and the thought and research behind it in a light and readable style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended

Product Description
Featured on Bill Moyer's PBS specialHealing and the Mind, this practical guideto mindfulness, meditation and healing from theauthor of the bestselling Wherever You Go,There You Are is a classic in the fieldof alternative medicine. Amazon.com Review
Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at theUniversity of Massachusetts Medical Center, is perhaps the best-knownproponent of using meditation to help patients deal with illness. (Thesomewhat confusing title is from a line in Zorba the Greek inwhich the title character refers to the ups and downs of family lifeas "the full catastrophe.") But this book is also a terrificintroduction for anyone who has considered meditating but was afraidit would be too difficult or would include religious practices theyfound foreign. Kabat-Zinn focuses on "mindfulness," a concept thatinvolves living in the moment, paying attention, and simply "being"rather than "doing." While you can practice anything "mindfully," fromtaking a walk to cleaning your house, Kabat-Zinn presents severalmeditation techniques that focus the attention most clearly, whetherit's on a simple phrase, your breathing, or various parts of yourbody. The book goes into detail about how hospital patients haveeither improved their health or simply come to feel betterdespite their illness by using these techniques, but thesemeditations can help anyone deal with stress and gain a calmer outlookon life. "When we use the word healing to describe theexperiences of people in the stress clinic, what we mean above all isthat they are undergoing a profound transformation of view,"Kabat-Zinn writes. "Out of this shift in perspective comes an abilityto act with greater balance and inner security in the world." --BenKallen ... Read more

Product Description

The New England Journal of Medicine reports that 16 percent (one in eight) of returning Iraq veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Such vets typically can’t hold jobs. They are incapable of intimacy, creative work, and self-realization. Some can’t leave the house because they are afraid they will kill or be killed. The key to healing, says psychotherapist Ed Tick, is in how we understand PTSD. In war’s overwhelming violence, the soul—the true self—flees and can become lost for life. He redefines PTSD as a true identity disorder, with radical implications for therapy. First, Tick establishes the traditional context of war in mythology and religion. Then he describes in depth PTSD in terms of identity issues. Finally, drawing on world spiritual traditions, he presents ways to nurture a positive identity based in compassion and forgiveness.War and the Soul will change the way we think about war, for veterans and for all those who love and want to help them. It shows how to make the wounded soul whole again. When this work is achieved, PTSD vanishes and the veteran can truly return home.

5-0 out of 5 stars FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
Wonderful well written book by someone who has taken care of survivors of war related PTSD succesfully for over 25 yrs.Obvious through his writing this is a man of great compassion and understanding. For anyone who is personally or professionally dealing with PTSD it is a must read in my opinion.

I have bought several copies to give to friends whose family members have been on the front lines and as one woman said "he has never been the same".

5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming a Community That Can Receive and Support Veterans
In the last handful of wars, more veterans return home with what's known as PTSD, "Soldier's Heart," and shellshock than there were casualties. The numbers are staggeringly high (far more than the general public realizes), and this society needs to become wiser in how we help these soldiers heal from their experiences and reintegrate into this society. We need to understand how to be a community for them, so they can unburden themselves and no longer feel like they still need to protect us from the war that is still playing out inside their souls.

Ed Tick is a therapist who talks about War in the language of the soul, and the soul is how veterans understand their own experiences. Having worked with vets since Vietnam and being frustrated with conventional therapies that haven't worked, Ed Tick turned to indigenous and classical cultures to find effective ways to work with returning warriors. What he has come up with is extraordinary--full of heart and soul.

While requisite reading for therapists and anyone with a vet in their lives, it's an important book for everyone else. If we become individuals and communities that can truly support and heal our returning soldiers, we will also become a society that knows how to properly initiate our adolescents into adults, how to treat ourselves and others, and how to shoulder or transform the burdens that we carry in our everyday lives.

Product Description
Growing Beyond Survival is a self-management workbook, which teaches skills that empower survivors to take control of and de-escalate their most distressing trauma related symptoms. Developed with input from survivor advocates in Maine, New York, and Maryland, and with the support of the Departments of Mental Health in the states of Maine and New York, this self-help toolkit is both comprehensive and flexible. This versatile workbook can be used as an independent self-help program, in the context of individual therapy, or in a group setting. It teaches trauma survivors to recognize, contextualize, and understand distressing dissociative and posttraumatic reactions. It also creates a structure in which to learn and practice skills for self-regulation of the troublesome thoughts, feelings, and impulses related to traumatic experiences. Rather than simply offering "band aid"-type crisis intervention, this self-paced program empowers survivors with an understanding of where the symptoms come from and why. By learning a variety of interventions, skills, and techniques, survivors are able to select and make use of different "tools" for different self-regulation purposes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth A Read!!!!!!!!!
I glad that I took the time to read The Stress Eating Cure for myself. I have read this book from cover to cover. I have come to the conclusion that the Hellers have updated their previous works (books). I have always felt that I lost weight faster when my carb meal was consumed earlier in the day. The Hellers have validated this theory in their latest book. This book merely changes the higher carb meal to early morning or late morning. All subsequent meals are truly low carb. The term reward meal is missing. Breakfast doesn't not require that one start the meal with a salad. I have always believed Breakfast should be the largest meal of the day. Everyone happy and content with the previous books of the Hellers should not blast this new edition because the Hellers have updated their work to reflect the fact that there are different needs for different types of stress eaters. If you are not a stress eater then don't shoot the messengers. There persons who could benefit from this book if more people would open their eyes to the fact all authors have a right to research and update previous works.

1-0 out of 5 stars this appears completely contrary to their previous books
l have just started reading this book and l am shocked, l am on the CALP programme, which only allows carbs once per day, the Drs Heller seem to be saying the opposite now.l cannot help but wonder are they genuine, are they really serious about this new way of eatingl have bought all of their books but now l am fast losing faith, l am so disappointed Maybe l will trust my self and go back to intuitive eating as in When women stop hating their bodies, Hirshman and Munter

5-0 out of 5 stars Common Sense Advice - Normal Foods - Relieve Stress and Lose Weight?Wow!
The Stress Eating Cure could be a great help to a great many people.Stress-Eating defined, according to the book, is about the consumption of high-carb and/or fatty foods in response to different types of stress - mental, physical or emotional. A stress-eater might crave food out of boredom or loneliness, anxiety, too many responsibilities, anger, fear or worry, even medications and/or drugs. This causes a hormonal imbalance where relief comes only in the form of giving in to the cravings over and over again.
In the book, Dr's Rachael and Richard Heller, strive first to help us discover our stress-eating type, and next to show us a step-by-step plan to correct the causes of stress-eating.
There are different menus for different phases, kind of the like the Atkins plan but with different food combinations, this is not a no-carb diet. The foods are normal everyday foods, and daily plans emphasize a big, balanced breakfast. If you follow the menu plans suggested, there's no way you could eat all that food! Why?Because the meal plans include what I call 'real food', and lots of it.Real food makes you feel satisfied, and in the combinations recommended, they may help you lose weight and relieve stress.
Nothing is really off limits as long as you combine it with certain other types of normal foods. In order to boost our vegetable consumption, on Page 156 of the hardcover book, the authors advise the reader 'never eat a naked vegetable!' - by which they mean we should "dip it, wrap it, stir-fry it, cover it, or tuck it in between layers of protein".
The Stress Eating Cure includes food lists, recipes and menu ideas as well. We're gonna try it - if it works, that's all that really matters, isn't it?

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected :(
I was hoping for something like the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet...however, this book is more about the psychological factors that affect our eating- and what to eat- when we feel stress etc. Carbs are allowed during the various meals- and it is nothing like the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet- that I was hoping for.If you are looking for a book that concentrates on your stress eating then maybe this book is for you, however, if you are looking for a book that curbs the carbs- this isn't it.
PS...The book just came out- and look how many are for sale here already...this book just didn't hit the nail on the head.As Joy Behar once said...The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet is the only diet that really works for her- for myself, I'd have to agree. :) ... Read more
