5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Needs This Book - Improve Your Own Quality of Life
This book is absolutely fabulous. It has the best explanations of the concept of stress, its contributing factors, and how to manage stress that I have ever seen.Whether for school or personal use, this book is great. It really helped me gain more understanding and control in my life - it is not just some self-help book.It explains the mechanics and science of stress and stress management in a clear way for anyone to understand so that you can really get a grasp on it.It covers SO many different aspects, such as interpersonal interactions with other people, time management, managing emotions, relaxation methods, analyzing the way we perceive situations, how the stress-hormones work (and what goes on in our brains and bodies during the stress-response), and so so so much more.Even just the stuff I learned about how to interact more effectively with people or how to deal with stressful situations more effectively was so good that I think if everyone read this book, the entire world would be a better place. If people just better understood how their brains and emotions work they could have more control over them.Everyone needs to read this!I bought this for a psychology class and it has been a wonderful influence in teaching me how to improve my own quality of life, and to not let other people and situations determine my happiness.

I really liked this book! It was for a Human Development class on stress management...

and at first I thought we would be reading stuffy material that would just add to our stress...

but I was wrong!

This book is fresh, filled with modern, updated information, and written in a really friendly voice. It also has pictures in it.

I especially liked the first-hand stories it had in it by real people who have dealt with their own stress. :) ... Read more

Product Description
An up-to-date and practical reference book on piping engineering and stress analysis, this book emphasizes three main concepts: using engineering common sense to foresee a potential piping stress problem, performing the stress analysis to confirm the problem, and lastly, optimizing the design to solve the problem. Systematically, the book proceeds from basic piping flexibility analyses, spring hanger selections, and expansion joint applications, to vibration stress evaluations and general dynamic analyses. Emphasis is placed on the interface with connecting equipment such as vessels, tanks, heaters, turbines, pumps and compressors. Chapters dealing with discontinuity stresses, special thermal problems and cross-country pipelines are also included. The book is ideal for piping engineers, piping designers, plant engineers, and mechanical engineers working in the power, petroleum refining, chemical, food processing, and pharmaceutical industries. It will also serve as a reference for engineers working in building and transportation services. It can be used as an advance text for graduate students in these fields. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars quality reading about PTSD
I just presented a couple of Power Point presentations in two University classes on PTSD.Though I didn't reference his journal production or his books, I find that reading this book pulled many things together after doing the above. He is at Emory now, going there from Yale.
The hardback could have used some editing. He repeats himself almost verbatim many times, which might help somebody who just picks into stray chapters.

Anyway, you might want to check out a PPT he presented March 2007.

http://braininstitute.vanderbilt.edu/Vanderbilt_March07_BremnerLecture.ppt

He frequently studies how trauma affects brain structures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Validation: Making Sense of the Senseless
THIS IS A "MUST READ". Any one who has suffered a loss, experienced grief, been violated or exposed to violence of self or other will derive comfort, knowledge and a logical explanation for why actions, feelings, thoughts, and ideas occur subsequent to such exposure. With the events of 9/11, that includes every American and much of the world's population who if not directly there in person, will have the images the media replayed time and again burned into their conscious and unconscious minds forever. It furthermore includes victims of childhood abuse no less than combat veterans, hurricane or other natural disaster survivors along with those from any terror, war and conflict.
The answer is that scientifically demonstrated brain changes and hormonal actions do govern behaviours, feelings and actions:NO, you're not crazy for seeing or perceiving things as you do.
The changes are real. You're OK.You're part of a world that isn't as OK or safe as you'd like it to be.

Dr. Bremner puts all of it together in a delightfully readable form sprinkled with annecdotes, metaphors and analogies. He presents serious subject matter and profound insights in a style as fascinating and captivating as science fiction.I bought it for professional purposes and then read it non-stop for pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars provocative title/serious book
I picked this book up in the bookstore because of the title
and once I read the first few pages in the store I was
really hooked. The author tells a couple of different stories
in the book and I can see why one of the reviews talked
about some parts of the book that are somewhat complicated.
The brain stuff about stress is very fascinating, and most
of it is easy to understand (I don't have any more than
a high school background in science.) There were a few difficult
parts but skipping over these did not detract from the fascinating story that the author tells about how people
experience stress, what events like September 11 can do
to people, and what the future holds in terms of understanding
how to deal with stress and treat it. The author includes
in the book an excerpt from his family history detailing
some very traumatic events and I wish that he had written
more about that. Still, a short but provocative book that helps
to put many issues regarding trauma into a perspective
that is new. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT SO IMPRESSED
I love Louise Hay and was excited to try this cd.I am very disappointed-I have been using it for over three weeks and feel just as stressed as I did before using it---bummed because I expected it to really work-

4-0 out of 5 stars like the betty crocker of positive thinking
i would have a tendency to rate all of Hays books as a 3 due the the simplistic nature of them... however, the messages are a 5, so in simple math... she gets a 4.

This CD provides you the opportunity to release anger and resentment stored in your mind and heart. You bring peace and joy to your life once you allow yourself to release old memories and hurts.

Great to receive product at a great price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as others
I listened to a tape of Louise Hay's about fear from the library and it was so great so I ordered this. But this one is annoying to listen to because instead of the affirmations saying "I am safe" etc, it says "I am safe. You are safe." because Louise Hay says the affirmation that you are supposed to hear and then she also says the subliminal message that you usually don't hear. The other track just has music with the subliminal message under it. But there isn't any track that has just the affirmations (I am safe) with the subliminal part (you are safe) hidden. It is distracting to hear "I am safe. You are safe." I don't know why they did it this way. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ambitious premise and blasé writing style is a questionable combination which didn't work for me. No recommendation
The night before his wedding, Michael Crawford loses his wedding ring--and finds himself married to a jealous, powerful, ancient vampire. His journey to understand and break this connection leads him to follow suffers Keats, Byron, and Shelley and on a torturous path across Europe. The Stress of Her Regard is ambitious historical and literary fantasy of mixed success. Pulling from mythology, history, and Romantic literature, it's dense and wide-ranging, a challenging book for both reader and writer. But there's something in the writing style--which is skillful, but also deceptively straightforward almost to the point of being blasé--which makes the premise unconvincing: the narrative takes revised history and reinterpreted literature at face value, with inadequate justification and without addressing any of the reader's (and, presumably, protagonist's) reasonable doubts. The premise is unique, the plotting is smart (although the ending is at once too big and too simple), but nothing is real enough that the book hits home.

At least, that's how it went for me. I suspect that this may simply have not been the right book for me, at least not right now. I applaud Regard's ambition, and found it interesting and ultimately satisfying, but I never quite enjoyed the book, was never compelled to read it, and never accepted Shelley as vampire-haunted victim, Romantic poetry as remnants of a vampire legacy. I floated through the book vaguely dumbfounded, and I feel my opinion is too weak for me to recommend for or against the book either way. Regard was, for me, unsuccessful--may other readers have better luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite work by Powers.
f this book had been written by anyone except Tim Powers, I never would have picked it up. As has been well-established in my reviews, I generally don't like historical fiction or alt.history books very much. I absolutely dislike alt.history when it deals with either World War II or the Romantic poets. And I could see right from the cover that this is an alt.history ghost story in which the hero "aided by his fellow victims, the greatest poets of his day -- Byron, Keats, and Shelley." Oh dear.

But still, this is Tim Powers. I love Tim Powers. It would not be an exaggeration to say I have adored almost everything I have read by Tim Powers. So reader, I bought it anyhow.

And, well, it wasn't awful. I'm not sorry I read it. I'd even recommend it to a reader more forgiving of historical fiction than I. It may even be a good book for people who might not normally appreciate Tim Powers.

But I didn't adore it. & here's why:

First, the novel bogs down in its own complications. This is most evident somewhere about 2/3 of the way through the book and in the Venice scenes. I enjoyed the Venice setting, don't get me wrong, but the whole thing became overly complicated right around there-- the biggest effect was I mostly stopped caring about the history of the nephelim and how anyone would try to get rid of them and the columns and the eye. Mostly stopped-- there were some interesting elements there, but much too much of a muchness. At least for me.

Second, I found the book suffered from how much it focused on the big well-known historical figures of the poets. In other Powers' books, I seem to recall that while there were famous people included, they rarely played more than a bit part. Since I have my own very vivid notion of these people from my biographical readings, I found his portraits distracted me just a little from the wonderful imaginary toad/real garden thing his books always have to their credit. I also got tired of everyone being a poet. But there you go.

I would guess that it mostly suffered, for me, by comparison to his other works. Which is kind of a compliment, in a way.

Still enjoyed it. And I'd still recommend it. So there you go.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest Vampire novels ever written
This is one of the greatest Vampire novels ever written.
I am so glad that this book is back in print. I have seen used paperbacks for upwards of $50 while it was out of print.
The story is based on the real lives of several Romance era poets and writers yet is woven into a story of vampires, as demi-god like monsters often called "muses" because of their hunger for art.
Tim Powers is the master of magic-punk.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT HIS BEST
Tim Powers can be a great writer ("Declare" is top-notch) but this novel feels like journeyman work. Powers tries to tie together the lives of the great Romantic poets with Biblical and classical myths, vampire lore and a smattering of quantum physics. Sounds intriguing but the story fails on all levels. There's not much build, despite a few thrilling set-piece scenes; the main character is passive and boring, and Keats, Shelley and Byron never are fully fleshed (a shame since we're talking about some of the most flamboyant men in history). The plot seems more of a travelogue as we follow our characters around Europe, periodically watching them climb mountains, swim, eat stuff and drink lots of wine. Even at that, we get no real feel for the period. The mopey prose doesn't do justice to the output of the real poets, nor does it satisfyingly ape their Gothic atmosphere. Powers also does an unconvincing job of crafting his inhuman characters, forcing them to be all things to all people and finally resorting to long expository scenes to sort things out. Sorry I can't recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Tim Powers
This book is classic Tim powers at his best. Never accidently marry a Lamia. It will bring your life crashing down on you with the crushing weight of a statue. Powers always weaves a tapestry of local legends, myths, occult practices, wives tales and many other phenomina with history, fact and speculation. His books are always a wild ride. ... Read more

This book rocks! Anything to turn stress into vitality is a blessing! Smiling down on your organs is such a lovely way to go about taking care of your insides. This book flows through the seasons with a particular organ, sound, color, feeling for each season. I highly recommend this book for all, even homeschooling famlies doing a unit on the body and/or the seasons.

This book has been very helpful to me. I have read other books from different masters and this is a very informative and useful practice that will help de-streess and change your attitude towards your body, life and other humans as well.

I still recommend working and learning from awith a Qi Gong master.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Effective
This book guides you through few basic, simple and effective Taoist practices for transforming negative energy into positive; removing the the obstacles in your energy field.More advanced practice of transmutation of negative energy is covered in the book Fusion of the Five Elements, however before you'd work with that one, you'd have to learn Microcosmic Orbit first.

The first practice is called "inner smile".In essence this involves focusing upon the smiling, happy, energy and directing it to different parts of your body.As you relax your mind, emotions and body into this smiling energy, any stress and tension you may feel is bound to be released.

The next set of practices covered in this book are six healing sounds. In Taoist tradition, specific emotions are associated with different organs in your body and so are different sounds which help to clear any energetic obstacles in these organs.Sounds, and accompaning movements are designed to clear and balance the energy of the particular organ.Working with healing sounds also involves focusing upon the imagery (in the simplest form a color) associated with the particular organ.

Five healing sounds are associated with organs in the body - heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and spleen.Sixty healing sound is associated not with the organ, but with the triple warmed meridian.Working with this sixth sound will deeply relax you and if you suffer from insomnia, it may also help you to fall asleep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for busy people.
This was a short easy to read book.
It doesn't go into great detail about stress.
It was educational with valuable information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise. Informative. Helpful.
The author clearly demonstrated a well written and resourceful book needs not be long and complicated. As a 40+ busy male who works under heavy pressure over 60 hours a week, I find it very useful. Hope that it can help you much as well. Highly recommended!

p.s. Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference.

Young people enjoy deep sleep - the most restful kind - for up to 100 minutes each night. If they shorten their sleeping time, they can make up for the loss of deep sleep in subsequent evenings. Middle aged people only average 20 minutes of deep sleep per night. That's why when middle aged people become sleep deprived, they may not be able to compensate for it easily. pg 25
Recondition yourself to associate your bed only with sleep. That means no reading in bed. pg 26
Taking long strides with arms swinging and eyes straight ahead made people feel happier than taking short, shuffling steps with eyes downcast. pg 51
The author's simple system to handle stress consists of three steps: 1. Move your body 2. narrow your focus and 3. take action. pg 61

This is an excellent book. Post Traumatic Stress can have many crippling effects on the way one socialized and lived. If you have been through one
or a series of violent events, or seen them. There are exercises to help you cope and either rid yourself of them or know how to deal with them if they have really gotten into your inner being, and can be tapped into a lifetime.
Even many troubling events we hear about (9/11) can get inside us. I feel
sorry for what our Iraq soldiers go through when they come home, and hope they get the awareness or techniques to help. This is best to work with
in conjunction with a therapist. Many are very aware of this problem and how to help you work through it...plus other techniques. Friends as support systems to are greatly helpful. Very very good activities that help!

2-0 out of 5 stars hard to read and not very useful
I was disappointed in this book. It has two flaws--either the original writing was awkward, or the translation is bad--it's hard to tell which.Second, and more importantly, it doesn't have a great deal of practical utility. There are many signs of stress listed, that include almost every dog behavior under the sun, and many causes, which are, again, multiple. The most interesting fact I picked up from it was that dogs need an average of 17 hours a day of sleep not to be stressed! If the reader needs a really useful reference on how to recognize stress in dogs, Canine Body Language by Aloff is much, much more useful, or the original pamphlet Turid Rugaas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on Stress in Dogs
This book clearly discusses the types of stresses dogs have and helps humans understand and deal with those stresses. A great read for the serious dog person.

3-0 out of 5 stars Do what I say...
Stress in Dogs Although this is a very well written book, I found myself asking questions, like why did a longer leash work better? Could have been a little more detailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every dog owner should read this book!
Too few people realize the stresses that our domestic dogs face on a daily basis. This book describes what to look for and how to reduce stress in our dogs.Myraid of behavior problems are rooted in stress and this book is an excellent resource for anyone that wants to modify their dogs behavior by identifying and removing stressors from their environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Groups
This is a great book for anyone who is in the counseling profession. Make your group/family counseling sessions a little more fun and get the dialogue flowing. - Good job Robert!

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not buy this item
Don't know why this is here as I never purchased this item.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite good
This is a collection of activities and exercises that you can use during training or meetings (or even alone) to reduce stress and make you more relaxed. Some of the activities are quite good especially the breathing exercises and the visualizations. However, there are quite a few activities that are quite ridiculous as well as others that are just not possible at work or in the training room.

For trainers, many activities are useful as icebreakers or as stress-reducers after a heated discussion. The reason I bought the book in the first place is because I could not find anything else in that category, so I guess there isn't really that much choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stress-management techniques....
Personally, I think this book is easy to read and understand. The games presented in the book are unique and simple to apply. Many companys and businesses experience stress daily. Therefore, this book provides numerous ways to help relieve stress in the workplace. I strongly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Workplace
I agree with the previous reviewer that this book is too focused on therapy-type games instead of games that teach more practical skills. I teach stress management for a municipal government, and the games in this book (particularly the visualization and role-playing exercises) are definitely not oriented toward the needs of most workplace environments. ... Praise For WHEN THE BODY SAYS NO

"Once thought to be in the domain of genes, our health and behavior have recently been revealed to be controlled by our perception of the environment and our beliefs. Gabor Maté, M.D., skillfully blends recent advances in biomedicine with the personal insights of his patients to provide empowering insight into how deeply developmental experiences shape our health, behavior, attitudes, and relationships.A must-read for health professionals and lay readers seeking awareness of how the mind controls health."
–– Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., cellular biologist

"The interviewees’ stories are often touching and haunting. . . . Maté carefully explains the biological mechanisms that are activated when stress and trauma exert a powerful influence on the body, and he backs up his claims with compelling evidence from the field. . . . Both the lay and specialist reader will be grateful for the final chapter, ‘The Seven A’s of Healing,’ in which Maté presents an open formula for healing and the prevention of illness from hidden stress."
–– Quill & Quire

"Medical science searches high and low for the causes of cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and a host of other conditions. Yet it often ignores one of the most pervasive factors leading to illness: the hidden stresses embedded in our daily lives. In this important book, Dr. Gabor Maté combines a passionate examination of his patients’ life histories with lucid explanations of the science behind mind-body unity. He makes a compelling argument for the importance of understanding stress both in the causation of disease and in the restoration of health."

5-0 out of 5 stars A very important book!!
This is a stunning book! The single best one I've read that not only describes but provides data to explain how repressing emotions can lead to disease (dis-ease). The stories and scientific studies paint a very vivid path from childhood incidents and trauma to repression of emotions and the stress brought on by them... to chronic and often fatal diseases. He includes and thoroughly covers various types of cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, asthma, ALS, Alzheimer's, and more.

There are SO many people in my life I would recommend this book to. My only hope is that they would read it and understand how vital it is that they deal with their childhoods before it's too late. Almost NObody had a perfectly serene childhood! Repression = disease. There's nothing good that can come from simply pretending everything is (and was) okay. :-(

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Change in Understanding
Gabor Mate has written a book that details how we have become limited in our lives and how we can move those limits. His knowledge of the body, mind, emotion connection is compelling in opening my mind to my own possibilities. His extensive experience with clients makes for real life stories which break down my resistence to this new information and unlock my own ability to move forward. I am amazed at how much I have changed due to 'When the Body Says No'. I can't imagine not knowing this information.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read about the Mind-Body connection
Dr. Gabor Mate writes a wonderful book about the mind-body connection and about how too much stress and failure to take care of yourself can lead to serious illness.
I'm not sure I buy all his arguments, but he makes a compelling argument that is definitely worth reading

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Those In The Law

4-0 out of 5 stars stressed beyond the Bar
Do you wonder if you are the only person crazy enough to think that your law practice is destructive to your spirit?Take heart, the book tells you that you are in good company. You must find a way to change your reaction to the stress, your path to sanity. This book offers a veriety of starting points

5-0 out of 5 stars Best In Its Class
This third edition is destined to be the classic authority on stress management for lawyers. It's not one of those touchy-feely books with no substance. It is very substantive and perceptive, as well as succinct and pragmatic. The author obviously understands lawyers and has written a very readable, logical and well-documented guidebook. In some sections, the author even manages to be inspirational and humorous.

The book covers everything you would want to know about stress and lawyers. The most helpful sections for me were the ones that deal with how lawyers can develop more effective thinking habits, be more in tune with their own and others' emotions, and be more true to their own values. There is also a section on how to apply all of these new skills to improve your time management habits, law practice management skills, and even family life. I recommend it enthusiastically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Asks the right questions
Initially I thought this book might be too touchy feely for lawyers - like many other books on this topic. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

I think the author's experience in NY law firms makes him well qualified to address this topic.I found it had helpful questions and that doing the exercises was very revealing.Net net, it helped to identify the sources of stress and makes it very clear that if the lawyer is honest about his/her values, what changes need to be made.

Following the suggestions in this book it makes it almost impossible for a lawyer to claim that there is nothing that can be done to improve his/her situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still great after all these years!
Even though this book was published in 1997, it is still very timely. After all, the type of stress that lawyers endure hasn't changed and neither have the techniques used to overcome it. I recently re-read it and gave it to a friend (another lawyer) to read- both of us were very glad that we did. It's the kind of book you read every time life seems overwhelming and too complex. The book simplifies things. It helps you understand precisely why you are stressed out and what you can do about it. It is easy to read, very practical and at the same time very profound. ... Product Description
WINNER OF THE LOUIS BROWNLOW BOOK AWARD!

The massive bureaucratic reorganization under the Department of Homeland Security was a response to the system-wide coordination problems brought to light on 9/11. Better planning, new leadership, and far-reaching reform were to demonstrate that the U.S. had learned its lessons well, that it would be prepared for the next attack or disaster. But the catastrophic response to Hurricane Katrina unequivocally showed how this restructuring has not brought about the kinds of long term policy changes that are necessary to deal effectively and efficiently with threats--whether manmade or natural.

Is the system permanently broken? Should FEMA be removed from DHS or abolished altogether? Donald Kettl, in this thoroughly updated second edition, takes a hard look at the most recent stress on the system. He explores how the 9/11 Commission forever changed public discourse on the topic as well as discusses the ways in which FEMA might be reformed. The country faces solvable problems, he argues, yet is in dire need of new leadership at every level. In his brief, gripping narrative, Kettl assesses how well the U.S. political system responds under extraordinary pressure and asks if the focus will continue to be on fighting the last war. There is small chance the catastrophe that lies ahead will replicate the last one. Is the government ready to face that next challenge? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars System under stress
Donald F. Kettl's 2007 Public Affairs book "System under Stress" is an excellent book that details President George Bush's failure during two major events: the 9/11 terrorist attacks; and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Kettl explains how these 'failures' created a 'stress test', (a test where Government, FEMA, and other emergency organizations in the USA, couldn't cope. And, as a result, let every American family down).

I highly recommend this confronting book to anyone who is interested (in the pre-Obama years), that deal with how Homeland Security works; how Government works; and how we deal with issues that affect our lives.

That's why I give the book five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stress test for the American political system
Donald Kettl's thin but rich book, "System under Stress," examines homeland security and American politics. He begins by observing that most of us tend to think that things will be in the future as they were in the past, that the political system behaves in predictable ways. However, he goes on, shocks to the system raise intriguing and powerful questions.Specifically, how have the events of 9/11 affected American politics and governance?

He raises a series of key questions, such as: "But what happens to that system when a major shock shakes its foundations? What can such a profound upheaval tell us about the system's ability to respond? How does it help define the core truths and enduring principles that lie at the heart of American government? And how can we evaluate the system's response to better understand how it can adapt to the diverse challenges we are likely to face in the future?"

This volume explores a number of issues emerging from a consideration of such questions. What systemic failures led to the successful and devastating attacks on 9/11? What kind of coordination problems across government agencies need to be addressed/What about the roles of state and local governments? How does the political system address the policy challenge of protection against threats that can never be fully eliminated? What about the balance between security and civil rights and liberties? How does a system, in short, respond to strain?Kettl uses a medical analogy: attacks like 9/11 serve as a kind of political "stress test" to diagnose what works and what does not work in the American political system.

This book is a well crafted analysis of such questions.Worth reading and worth thinking about. . . .

4-0 out of 5 stars Anxiety and AS
Easy to read and informative. This is a good buy if you suffer from these two conditions.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Little Guide.
I've never been diagnosed with any sort of personality or learning disorder. My family and I have suspected it for some time, however. One suspect is Asperger's Syndrome--while I don't want to condition myself to believe I am an "Aspie" without proffessional assessment, I can assess some Vine books. The first for consideration is Nick Dubin's "Asperger Syndrome and Anxiety." Sorry it took so long--I've been reviewing a lot of interesting stuff!

The writing is sound. The author mostly avoids being a "little professor" with unnecessary jargon or excessively formal grammar. Yet he doesn't shy from some basic counseling and psychiatric terms. I estimate a 9th or 10th grade reading level. The book also appears to carry over ideas from Asperger Syndrome and Bullying, providing a continuity and transition for the familiar reader.

As slim as the volume already is, wordiness does detract from the read. It's okay to use contractions, and to replace "medical science has proven" with "medicine proves" or "medicine proved". Also, repetition of key points is a fundamental of exposition, but it can also be annoying. Please don't confuse repetition with the "action points" at the end of each chapter--I think those are a good idea.

The idea of this book is more introduction than a therapeutic course. It summarizes the original research, opinions, or treatments of various doctors in the field. The author lends weight to what he feels is going to be the most useful to his audience, as opposed to bogging down the text with an objective history or index of treatment. Dubin periodically admits his personal bias, and recommends deeper reading. The value of Dubin's own experience is that readers can compare and contrast it to the anecdotes of other writers, forming whatever opinion will be helpful to you. That said, I feel the book should further explore its source theories and the author's own conclusions. As short as the book is, plenty of room lies for growth.

The most helpful idea off the bat is the sort of thing building off my own science reading. I have long empowered my obstacles. Something as simple as navigating to a new house or business continues to fill me with anxiety, even if less than I used to feel when I was learning to drive. Dubin has even beat me to publishing books despite being the same age, because I've attached too much clutter in my head to the challenge. Do not give unnecessary power to your problems--so simple, and yet so easy to miss without an outsider to point it out for me.

I only have one big problem with this book as therapy. I'm fascinated by blendings of rational and irrational thought. Our minds veer from science to magic to lunacy and back without missing a beat. Keeping in mind that I reviewed a pre-publication proof, this is the problem with "Anxiety and Spirituality".

I agree some people think and fear and fret until the idea of Death hems them inside. So I'm pleased the actual spiritualism and philosophy tries to open folks up while keeping them on planet Earth. Such as the examples of Victor Frankl and Kierkegaard, or lessons from the Koran and Buddhism. Such psychological tools do not necessarily put the patient into a collision course with science.

My concern lies with the feel-good, New Age pseudoscience from the 1970s and early `80s.Including Near Death Experiences by Raymond Moody and Elizabeth Ross, or Rupert Sheldake's version of morphogenetic fields. Dubin does not inform his readers that these are fringe concepts, but reframes them as appealing to the independent spirit of an Aspie. He also plays loose with Chaos Theory and Quantum Mechanics, assigning soul or God-like traits to them in an attempt to illustrate that the patient need not fear the death of identity.

But in doing so, the author commits the age-old sin of imposing fancy upon the mundane. And a grave sin indeed; as the target audience suffers a syndrome, often co-morbid with various personality disorders, feeding delusions might only cause more harm.Chaos theory, for example, does not say that the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil will cause a tornado in Texas, but almost the opposite--that a butterfly is dampened and dispersed by its environment so that we can't predict any long term, long-distance effects. This very uncertainty is part of what is so upsetting to many people, not just Aspies, so imagine what will happen emotionally if somebody stumbles upon a contrary view.

Of course, psychologists and psychiatrists are as human as their patients, with conclusions as likely to slide from medicine to voodoo. As an antidote, I recommend Occum's Razor: "Do not multiply entities unnecessarily." A nice dovetail to Dubin's own advice, do not give power to ideas that have not earned it.

Dubin's power isn't to shrill for religion or pseudoscience--it is to empower the patient. And for that I give him all credit. Writing books will not cure his syndrome, so much as manage it while earning an income and educating society. "Asperger's Syndrome and Anxiety" cannot be considered a comprehensive text, but it is an accessible introduction to some popular therapies and personal advice, and on that level it has promise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable information, personal, easy to read.
This book, in my opinion, was extensively researched and carefully crafted. The author offers a lot of practical advice and hope without romanticising.I found it very helpful in both understanding Aspergers and coping with it.Thanks, Mr. Dubin, we ARE capable of empathy.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good resource for Asperger's Syndrome folks
My son has Asperger's and some books we have found are useful and some are duds. this is a good book, with practical advice for the person with Asperger's and the one who loves them.
My son has had panic attacks from time to time and with Asperger's people treat you differant. You know you are differant.. and see and hear things in another way than others do.
Good resource, wise council.. worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth reading -- starts great, falls apart at the end
This book is definately worth reading by people with Aspergers and those close to them. The first part is very insightful. It offers lots of info on how Aspies think and view things, and how these common viewpoints can lead to anxiety. The author, who has Aspergers, discusses how Aspies may try to overcompensate for the "deficiencies" of Aspergers and how the way that this is done can lead to anxiety. The trauma of growing up with Aspergers, and the effects this has on peoples' psyche is covered at length. Also discussed, with great insight, is:hypersensitivity, perfectionism, difficulty transistioning, monotropism, problems with nonverbal cues, auditory processing difficulties, and depression. This are not discussed clinically, thought there is much scientific evidence mentioned, but are discussed as they actually feel to the person experiencing them.Again, great insights into thought processes that lead to or further these issues. The second half of the book covers what to do about these issues. Here I found the book to be lacking. When the book ventured into "new age" things like morphogenic fields in its chapter on spirituality, it lost my respect.Still, the first half of the book has insights worth reading. ... As a new Kindle owner, I decided I might want to get some of his books to have on my kindle. But after reading the reviews, I wonder, WHY would this be offered on the Kindle?I have another of his CDs that has been very useful to me.With the CD being such an integral part of what this book has to offer, the Kindle just does not seem the best way to experience it.Just because something is offered in the Kindle format does not mean that is the best format to purchase. If I decide to buy this, it will be the HB form, new, with an intact CD, and not the Kindle version.Amazon should make it clear when they offer a product like this that it is not the same as the HB version. And, we as consumers need to research and think carefully before we purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware, Kindle users
As most of the reviews agree, the BEST part of this book is the CD, that helps you to relax and meditate. The Kindle version comes with a transcript of the cd and the Text-to-Speech feature enabled, but don't expect it to be ANYTHING like the original CD: no music, no soothing and relaxing voice, no Brian guiding you....it won't do the job.Why wouldn't they include and MP3 with the original content of the cd? Beats me!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not satisfied
I was disappointed when I received the book, as it did not contain the CD that originally came with it, and that was not relayed in the ad for the book. I specifically WANTED the CD, and when I realized it wasn't there, I emailed the seller, with no response. I will continue to look for the CD elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD for stress relief
Anyone familiar with Dr Weiss's books will love this. For people who are not familiar with stress the book is useful. However, the CD is the real gem and I play it daily. It has managed to keep my adrenals in order and my blood pressure under control and for that I am most grateful.
This is highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Foundation Training Resource
This book serves as a good foundation for Crystal Reports users. The content is presented clearly and consisely, with hands-on exercises that serve as an excellent complement to the information presented. We use this guide for our instructor-led training classes on Crystal Reports, both Basic (first half of manual) and Advanced (last half of manual). I found this to be a better on-the-job reference manual than most of the manuals offered by traditional courseware vendors, with much more comprehensive content. My only wish is that the exercises were more clearly delineated in the manual (e.g., a shaded background). Without that delineation, it is sometimes difficult to see where the explanation stops and the exercise starts.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for training
This book is an excellent training resource and walks the user through all of the basic, most of the intermediate, and some of the advanced features of Crystal Reports 2008.The material is presented in large-format pages with many visuals that materially aid in understanding. The book is written in an open and easy style that successfully balances the need to present technical information to readers who are not wholly devoted to IT development.

The strength of the book lies in the scores of example exercises. Each exercise step is described and many steps are illustrated. Most of the exercises focus on a single topic, though many build on earlier exercises to fully explore a topic or suite of topics. The exercises are clearly presented, well thought out, and close enough to "real world" reporting problems that they are useful. The exercises on conditional formatting are very useful, especially as this topic is largely ignored in other manuals of this type. The sections on charts and parameters are both lengthy and useful. The book also features several exercises on report alerts, a topic that is completely ignored in virtually every other product on the market. Finally, the book has an exhaustive and useful index that insures it will be a useful resource beyond the initial foray through the exercises. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The story of the blind man retold
There are hundreds of books on Amazon about heart disease as well as stress reduction and the relaxation response. Some, like Dean Ornish's, are quite comprehensive and integrative in their approach to the problem.Others are overly narrow, stressing just one of the usual three legs of the tripod of diet, exercise, and stress. Then there are books that zoom in on one narrow aspect of their already narrow approach (the 2 currently most popular books concentrate on diet, though Esselstyne's "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" emphasizes abstinence from all fats, dairy, even fish and flax while Sinatra's "Reverse Heart Disease Now"-- with its advocation of CoQ10 and numerous non-prescription vitamins--comes close to making a pill junkie out of the afflicted).

It's a little like the old Indian tale of the blind men who are asked to determine the precise nature of an elephant by feeling it--each coming to a valid but necessarily limited and partial conclusion.Jennings and Kennedy's book acknowledges all three legs of the tripod but emphasizes stress reduction through exercise, relaxation, guided imagery and a simple breathing technique. To readers familiar with Herbert Benson's relaxation response and the numerous books it has spawned, this will be familiar ground. No doubt even readers without a representative collection of heart books are likely to "speed read" all of the statistics and anecdotal examples that the authors have collected in order to substantiate the claim that their approach is proven and useful and to "justify" a book devoted to a few basic techniques--a 15-minute cure--that may already be common wisdom to many readers.

Still, a book with a highly marketable title and hyperbolic sub-title(the sick are often as impatient and anxious for a quick read and simple and complete cure as the healthy) is unlikely to mislead those readers who choose to pick it up.Familiar and repetitive some of the information may be, but books such as this have a way of being read and then forgotten.Like the Sunday sermon, even the reader who is familiar with the "message" needs to be reminded of it from time to time, the greater the number of doctors, specialists, preachers, cheer-leaders the better. So in one sense it's good, especially for those of us who have lapsed in our programs and ourformer good intentions, that books on the subject of heart disease and lifestyle changes keep appearing.

The book is easily recommendable, and would make a good Kindle download (though some of us might wish that the price were reduced by another 20% for such a comparatively fast read). The advice is well-taken, the exercises within the reach of virtually everyone, and, unlike some books promoting mega-doses of arginine and other exotic chemicals, vitamins and herbs, this one cannot possibly do the reader who follows its prescriptions any harm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story telling to make a point of better living
The authors do a tremendous job of describing how our heart works and what to do to keep it working at maximum.Very interesting.

1-0 out of 5 stars A 15 Minute Walk would be better
I found this book to be disappointing.I read it, tried the exercises, and found myself frustrated because I really wanted to feel de-stressed...but wasn't.The book is replete with anecdotes about the author's interactions with various patients, and I felt that most of it was redundant. The main B-R-E-A-T-H-E exercise may be valuable to some and could have been taught in one simple chapter without the rest of the chatter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really bad service
I nver recieved the book, have no idea where it is.I will never buy anything from Amazon again

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great stress and heart helper
Dr. Kennedy has got it right.Dr Sarno and the mind over body technique has helped me with back pain and now Dr Kennedy has taught me how to reduce stress and reduce my blood pressure. This is so easy to do and so relaxing, give it a try.
