5-0 out of 5 stars Great Morning Meditations
Great short morning meditations.I read one each day and paused to reflect on what was said.It is a great way to start out the day, especially if you can keep the thoughts in mind throughout the day.
The only part that I found a little weak was the pronouns in the fixed format of each day.Joan's reflections were always with a "We", never an I.That sometimes struck me as impersonal, especially on some very personal topics.Conversely, her prayers each day were always with an "I", which I found sometimes too personal -- somethings I have to face alone, and feel it, but somethings I believe I face in community with others, and want to express my feelings (and prayers) in that manner. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars like the book, love the author!
I just received the book and haven't had a chance to really give it a great review. But I can say, I have listened to Dr. Lawless many times on Dr. Phil and love what he says and knows about anxiety etc.....

5-0 out of 5 stars How to find help for depressive people
This book has helped me in a christian way. The only person behaviors that I have control of is my own.A saying I learned in my psychology classes in college and it is so true.I had to let go of past misdeeds and I feel so much better!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Stress Answer
It's an excellent book.It is clear and understandable for the average person and gives everyone hope and the skills to help themselves.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much technical Mumbo Jumbo
I thought that b/c this book was recommended to the public by Dr. Phil that it would be an easy to read source of info for anger management and stress reduction.I was wrong. While the book does offer many very scientific studies proving a whole lot of things, it never got down to clearly explaining the informtion. My husband and I started reading the book together, and switched to another easier to read book.I would not recommend this to any one who is lacking an advanced degree in psychology or psychiatry. As a Family Doc, I was lost!

5-0 out of 5 stars No Magic Pill, But A Useful Guide for Stress Relief
I am not a medical doctor, but I've studied medical and scientific findings into the brain's plasticity, and The Stress Answer relates coping strategies based on the latest discoveries into the workings of what's often called "three pounds of infinity."Jeffrey Satinover, Norman Doidge, V. S. Ramachandran, et. al., corroborate what Dr. Lawlis integrates in his chapters on storms of various stresses. He provides 45 days of useful exercises to coping with--and reducing stress. You do not have to follow his schedule to the letter. But I recommend doing one or two exercises daily until you have finished all of them.If you are serious about improving the quality of your life, then you should start at day one and go through the exercises again. This kind of repetition will not be boring; in fact, the more you repeat them, the less anxiety you will feel.I know.I did them.Instead of wasting 60 minutes of your life feeling anxious and depressed, invest that 60 minutes into yourself.Isn't it logical to invest your energy into feeling better instead of feeling blue?Excuse me while I rehearse positive imagery for my next book review. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Publication
This is a sound text to guide programs aimed at reducing target audiences' life stress.Concur that it is also a sound read for the general population as well.Mr. Gordon's review misleads potential beneficiaries of this text which is filled with a plethora of evidence based and efficacious information.Though there may be some shortfalls in terms of hard science, the text does not warrant absolute discredit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable handbook on stress management
This is a very comprehensive review of stress management techniques. When combined with an active program of mindfulness meditation, then you will certainly have a winning combination. If you would like to learn more about mindfulness meditation to compliment this book then I also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation', available through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Managing Stress-Principles and Strategies for Health and Well-Being
I'm in an advance study program in health and wellness and this text book is part of one of my courses. However, this book can be used by anyone interested in learning how to manage their stress.

I have read several other works on managing stress and this is simply the best I have ever read. It is easy to read with lots of graphics and photos. It has a section in each chapter that highlights definitions you should understand and remember. There are many worksheets to help you work though your own stress issues. At the end of each chapter there is a summary in bullet form that highlight the most important concepts. The books walks you though stress management in a step by step indebt process. You can skip around chapters reading the ones you need or are interested in and still get a lot out of it.

If you are studying stress at the college level you will love this book and if you are just interested in learning and managing your own stress and can read at a 9th grade level you will find this a fantastic resource. The last chapter covers more than 10 of the most powerful stress management techniques that you will learn to use for the rest of you life.

The workbook that came with my order is an outstanding addition to helping you understand stress management. And my girl friend uses the relaxation CD to help her sleep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Managing Stress - An Excellent Textbook
I had checked out this book from the college library and had found it so packed with information that I needed that I had to have my own copy. When the textbook came, I was delighted to find that a workbook was included in the price of the book.I am thoroughly pleased with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Owner's manual for the human body
This book was the text for my college Stress Management course to fulfill the health credit requirement. This text was so beneficial that my husband enrolled in the course after a week of repeated serious health crisis after serious health crisis (he was only given 2 weeks or less to live by an electro-physiologist). My husband and I both learned invaluable lessons on taking ownership of our human body.

This book covers it all - from music therapy, art therapy, tai chi, qi gong, nutrition, spirituality, etc. Brian introduces the reader to concepts from Maslow's theory of self-actualization to cell memory, reiki to st. john's wort, basically everything relating to taking charge of our stress from A to Z.I have yet to find a more comprehensive book on the foundations for taking charge of the health and wellness of our psychological mind and physical body.

This book is a must read for everyone who owns their body (ie everyone!) ... Read more

Product Description
I'm never going to finish this project on time. This is hopeless; everything's going wrong. Why do I try to do everything at once? A busy life is full of stressful situations-that's a given. But that doesn't mean there is nothing you can do. Your thoughts can actually affect the way your brain processes stress, for better or worse. Most of the time, our brains compound the problem, adding thoughts of self-doubt and frustration to already difficult situations.

Stress Less, Live More presents a program based in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) that can help you train your brain to react to stress in a different way. With the mindfulness and acceptance techniques in this book, you'll clear out mental clutter, enhance your focus, and concentrate on the present moment, so that you can channel your energy into what matters most to you. It's that simple.

  • Learn to mindfully accept what can't be changed
  • Find peace and contentment in the present moment
  • Practice relaxation skills you can use to calm yourself in a crisis
  • Make time for yourself by asserting your right to say 'no'

Unexpected and powerful.... You will never think the same way about your stress again.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you despise your employees, buy them this book.
Price Pritchett and Ron Pound have written a "Survival Guide to The Stress of Organizational Change" but this is no 'Survival Guide'. This is an open letter, from senior management at explaining why you, the reader, are weak and mistake riddled so-suck-it-up-and-get-back-to-work. The table of contents consists of 15 chapters that all begin with "Big Mistake". This underlying assumption that Price and Ron (and of course senior management at know what I think (of course I am incapable of empathy) and what motivates me, is exactly why some companies undergo organizational change every year or two. This book is a non-religous guide to both thought and behavior, much like "On the Correct Handling of the Contradictions Among the People". If you receive a copy of this book from senior management at it is likely time to start looking for a new job.

I understand that Mao Zedong wanted to be cremated in a funeral pyre of 100,000 copies of this book, but Price and Ron insisted that they use that lame crystal coffin instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Propaganda that you need.
This 36-page booklet, geared towards lower or middle management, reads like propaganda. It is, however, hard reality, like it or not.Its obvious stuff that we all need to be reminded of now and again.I suggest that if your organization is going through major change and you're having a hard time dealing with the situation, read this with an open mind. I wish I read it before they laid me off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise
I've been on both sides of reorganizations, and this book does HELP. It was especially very good advice when I was younger and just beginning to experience the change that all organizations must go through.I held on to my copy and still look at it now and then to remind myself that I shouldn't fight change, but take it as it comes and make the most of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic Reality
I am an employee who appreciates reality. This book espouses the importance of personal accountability...for how we work, how we live, how we feel.

The challenge is in doing something right that does not come naturally; proactive rather than reactive. This book made me feel good about how much control I actually do have.

Following the axioms presented will help you step over some tripwires in the minefield of a work-a-day world in the throes of change.

1-0 out of 5 stars Senior managers will love it, but employees will hate it
The tone and messages of the book are such that they will serve to demotivate, rather than inspire, employees. For example:

Message #1:You (the reader) are not senior management.Throughout the book, senior management is described as "the people at the top" and "they."The book immediately sets up a distinction between these two groups - top management, which is moving the company along in response to outside changes, and employees, who are resisting change at every turn.

Message #2:Change is scary, unrelenting, and you (the average person) are naturally not going to like it.And if you weren't scared about change going into the book, you will be after you read it.One of the opening paragraphs reads:"And if today's stress and tension aren't enough to create problems, all a person has to do is consider what the future holds. One close look at what's in store should be enough to worry anyone."

Message #3:You (the reader) are an idiot, and you will persistently resist change unless you wise up to the tips in this book. The book outlines 15 mistakes people usually make in dealing with change. It doesn't offer 15 good ideas for preventing stress due to change, but instead focuses on 15 things you'll probably do wrong unless, of course, you read this book.

On the whole, this book is too simplistic and supplies only minimal rationale for why an employee should change. If you want to get employees to be more open to change, to put their heart into their job, to be more supportive of the company's overall direction, then give them a book that will inspire them.Give them tips for how to be a happier person, both on the job and at home.Talk to them in a positive tone and not a negative one, as this book does. There are many books out there that can accomplish these goals, just not this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book...
I remember when the ideas from this text were taught back in the 1980's in a class at the University of Maryland called "Controlling Stress and Tension." I took the class from one of the authors and later became a T.A. in the class.

This was one of the best courses I ever took at U of MD.

I was an engineering major at the time and the professor knew that my future career would have alot of stress involved, so he tailored the paper I wrote to reflect these things. I had to research "Theory Z Management" (described briefly on Wikipedia) and how the principles from the class can help employees have a fulfilling work experience.

Since that time, I have used the principles from the class throughout my engineering career, later in law school and, currently, in my career in patents. The principles are things I actually use in daily life and, at times, I have used them to give me the strength to go on when I thought I was completely spent.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book and I thank the author for the teachings in that class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way Ahead Of Its Time - Wonderful Reading!
This book encapsulates almost everything which it's taken me 10 years to learn as a fitness, lifestyle, and nutrition coach.

Stress For Success goes beyond what is taught in many university barchelors courses and was recommended by one of my professors, a psychologist. Much of the information in these pages reflects what clinical research is still showing 10 years after this book was first published.

This is a book that was way ahead of it's time and is more pertinent now because we have more people becoming ill because of being unable to cope with what they perceive as being stressful. It was exciting and informative to read, and the author does a good job of giving guidelines for how to live a healthy and happy life, and ways to adjust instead of reacting to events which we may perceive as being stressful.

Some of the nutritional guidelines are a little antiquated, but most of them are solid advice, and I love the way Loehr has taken a very holistic look at stress.

As a professional, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to absolutely everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stress for Success - a MUST READ
This book is phenomenal.I highly recommend it.It approaches stress from an entirely new perspective. It's easy to read, easy to understand and it's message is easy to integrate into your life.I run stress management workshops as a part of my private practice and this book has
provided me with much insight. If you're looking for a book on stress management, this is the book to buy. You'll be happy you did!Linda Myers

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding the zone - for corporate athletes and you!
James Loehr tells us the key is not how to get rid of stress, but to learn to perform well under pressure. He has helped many professional athletes and corporate executives get into what he terms the Ideal Performance State (IPS).This zone is achieved by a balance of stress and recovery.IPS is characterized by calmness, relaxation and confidence.

Loehr explains how to learn to take a break from stress and identifies the different types of stresses that lead to certain downfall if not regularly abated. He applies the stress/recovery theory to both physical and mental realms. Also, too much recovery is erosive. The happiest and most productive people have a proper balance and oscillation between stress and recovery in their activites.

Here is a ritual that could help: Get up in the morning and merge your thoughts and actions together in the present by watching your breathing. Then ask yourself why you should fight today. You need a reason to rise your emotions. Then create a vision for the future and contrast it witht the present.Use affirmations to overcome weaknesses. Then, visualize how the day should go.

Many practical techniques and suggestions are offered to help achieve IPS such as affirmations, exercise, nutrition and humor development. Guard your sleep, eating schedule and recovery tactics.Every day is a battle for control of your response to life.

It may be true that you deserve a break today!Use these techniques to come back stronger.

Five Stars

4-0 out of 5 stars Face your life!
The message is clear -- face the issues that are stressful for you.I enjoyed this book because it is realistic. If you have problems with stress, this book will help you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting concept
James Loehr convincingly puts forth the argument that, instead of avoiding stress, you need to learn to embrace it and improve yourself by learning to adapt and effectively recover from stress.

An admittedly interesting concept. After reading this book I tried to make myself immune from headaches by banging my head against the wall for progressively longer periods of time. After two weeks I was admitted to the Emergency Room here at El Camino Hospital and diagnosed with a minor concussion. The attending ER doc, Dr. Lee, tried to pursuade me not to continue with this project.I told him about this book, but he was not familiar with it.I was afraid his ignorance would be detrimental to my project, so once I get my doctor's approval to go back to work, I'm going to try this again. ... Product Description
In Coherent Stress Testing: A Bayesian Approach, industry expert Riccardo Rebonato presents a groundbreaking new approach to this important but often undervalued part of the risk management toolkit.

Based on the author's extensive work, research and presentations in the area, the book fills a gap in quantitative risk management by introducing a new and very intuitively appealing approach to stress testing based on expert judgement and Bayesian networks. It constitutes a radical departure from the traditional statistical methodologies based on Economic Capital or Extreme-Value-Theory approaches.

The book is split into four parts. Part I looks at stress testing and at its role in modern risk management. It discusses the distinctions between risk and uncertainty, the different types of probability that are used in risk management today and for which tasks they are best used. Stress testing is positioned as a bridge between the statistical areas where VaR can be effective and the domain of total Keynesian uncertainty. Part II lays down the quantitative foundations for the concepts described in the rest of the book. Part III takes readers through the application of the tools discussed in part II, and introduces two different systematic approaches to obtaining a coherent stress testing output that can satisfy the needs of industry users and regulators. In part IV the author addresses more practical questions such as embedding the suggestions of the book into a viable governance structure. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PTSD for Dummies Is a Tremendous Help
"Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for Dummies" is a tremendous help for everyone involved in the life of someone with the disorder -- including the person with PTSD, those who interact with this person on a daily basis and those closest to the person who want to help but have no idea what to do.

This book does an excellent job describing what goes on mentally and physically within the person with PTSD.It is amazing and can be extremely difficult for that person, but with immediate therapy from a mental health care professional, the symptoms, to a large extent, can be recognized and controlled. The key is getting IMMEDIATE help after the traumatic event(s). Many types of therapy are also described.

What I appreciate most about the book is that it does not ignore the people who live with and love this "new person." It gives them hope because depression can easily set in for those who truly want to do what is best to help. It also informs the sufferer, who is most likely unaware, of what life can be like for his/her loved ones.

This book is easy to read and yet extremely informative. It gives the reader "just enough" information to understand PTSD, and it gives hope to the sufferer and everyone involved in that person's life.

Good book with helpful insight to help with dealing with PTSD. Interesting insight and self awareness techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource from One Who Knows
This is a comprehensive look at a very serious subject. Written by Mark Goulston, MD, a top psychiatrist and life-skills coach, the book delivers invaluable information and advice for those living with PTSD.
It's also an excellent primer for anyone interested in the subject. Dr. Goulston writes with a conversational tone that is very comforting. His primary message to his reader is "There is a road out of this terrible place."
PTSD victims and their family members have to be reminded of this at every turn, for the depression and isolation that usually comes with PTSD, too often leads to suicide. We are seeing this more and more in combat veterans.
While Dr. Goulston notes that PTSD is a major, life-altering disorder, and an "invisible epidemic" affecting at least 13 million Americans of every age, he also asserts the good news today, is that PTSD is highly treatable.
PTSD is a complex illness, and there are many manifestations of it. The author explains that there are two primary types of PTSD: Simple and Complex. Simple PTSD usually follows a single event, while Complex PTSD can occur after repeated traumas. Gooulston gives insights into the amazing array of available treatments that now offer relief and healing.
He addresses the challenges and stresses facing the loved ones of those
with PTSD, as well as nearly every facet of this "Anxiety Disorder."
He also manages to infuse the book with flashes of humor, a much-needed tool for fighting PTSD.
This book will help anyone interested in PTSD, and that should be all of us, as we're all just one traumatic event away from it. As our war veterans return from Iraq and Afghanistan, this vital resource can provide great hope and understanding.
Don't be mislead by the "Dummies" label. This book is chock-full of scientific facts, and proven remedies. A very important work on PTSD. Highly, enthusiastically recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, someone who TRULY understands and offers REAL HELP
Flashbacks are like a time machine. You literally re-live it in every way down to your visceral responses and the same exact thoughts going through your mind. We attempt to scramble back into the present tense ASAP. This was (and sometimes still is) the hardest aspect of PTSD to get under control.
Your book (and years of therapy and ongoing self-directed effort)taught me to acknowledge the unwanted memories as brain blips because of cataloging.....(i.e. a sexual snarl provoking a memories of all that molestation or torture makes a young girl rememember AND feel.....)It's not only my body "replaying" the sensations, it's also the EMOTIONAL/visceral responses......i.e. feeling scared, helpless, unimportant, unloved.....these I now realize that the physical memories (burning, violence, starvation, etc...) are ALWAYS accompanied by what you think and the emotional component.
So, it's not only remembering and re-experiencing what they did to your body, it's ALSO what you concluded about yourself, the world......and what to expect next......I'm not articulate at all.....but it's these emotions that are reexperienced in my body that I ALWAYS have to recognize aren't true any more. I call them the emotional reverbations of random memories......This has helped me to learn what to acknowledge as pertaining to `now' and what got accidentally misfired.......That was and is my lynchpin to feeling capable and able to appreciate my life. The best thing is............I notice that everything is less intense and floats by more easily.............I can't thank you enough...........True, my therapies helped, but......reading your book seemed to present it as "OK and doable"........I think it was because you wrote it like the reader was talking to a friend and it's OK to have challenges like this. THANK YOU!
In summary, I must remember that these are outdated "life templates". I just let them pass as such. I no longer try to PUSH them away. My gentle recogniation has actually made them recur less frequently and with less visceral impact and they "dissolve" more quickly as well. Your "acceptace" advice is, ironically, the most curative! I wish all PTSD's could know this.
I owe you much that I love about life now.....including me! *blush*

Product Description
What is it like to be sued for medical malpractice? Bad medical outcomes traumatize patients but they also traumatize physicians. The litigation that often follows is a profoundly human, rather than just a legal experience.Although every physician's case is different, this book shows how each case goes through the same judicial stages of complaint, discovery, depositions, motions, and delays that lead to trial, settlement, or being dropped. It also gives doctors an understanding of how lawyers think and work to help defendants.Written by a physician and a lawyer, the book provides unique insights - through real-life stories - into the personal experience of litigation as well as recommendations for dealing with each of the legal process. It also includes up-to-date reviews of HIPAA legislation, the controversial subject of disclosure, and recent developments in the law affecting medical practitioners.Only about thirty percent of plaintiffs win their cases against doctors, but the journey from bedside to witness stand tests both the personal character and the professional skills of those accused. This well-documented book will help doctors understand and navigate the legal system while honoring their own ideals and emerging changed but stronger from the experience. ... Read more

I'm preparing a paper on Physicians in the Complaint process in Canada. The author has a lot of experience in the U.S. system , much of which is relevant tous, especially the advice to doctors about coping with this trauma. The authors other papers are helpful and I wanted this book for reference

5-0 out of 5 stars Relevant & Useful Tool
Adverse Events, Stress & Litigation, A Physician's Guide, is the latest contribution by a pair of professionals who have spent the last three decades shedding light on a previously unmentioned subject.Sara Charles, MD and Paul Frisch, JD partnered to provide the most comprehensive and thoughtful review of this complex topic. This book explores adverse events and provides practical tips on how to disclose unexpected occurrences to the patient and/or family. The authors skillfully corroborated to provide the reader with a clear understanding of the litigation process.Numerous caveats are included that will assist defendants as they deal with the demands of litigation. To further add to this well-written text, numerous poignant case vignettes are provided.
This book provides the reader with advise, guidance and insights not found in any other resource and should not only be a part of every health-care practitioner's library, but at the fingertips of every physician dealing with the litigation process. Thanks to Sara Charles and Paul Frisch for this timely, well-written and thoughtful contribution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pertinent and Substantive!
Adverse Events, Stress and Litigation: A Physician's Guide was recommended to me by my daughter in pre-med. As an emergency physician with 30 years of experience in healthcare, I found this book a welcome addition to my continuing medical education. The authors provide an in depth synopsis of a topic which is fraught with anxiety for all physicians, medical malpractice. The book's unique strength lies in both content and format, setting it apart from other literature on the same topic. What it is NOT, is a sterile, didactic review on medical litigation.Rather, it walks the reader through the mine field of a claim or suit.It shines a light through the fog that is the legal process (and the associated attorney jargon) inherent in this stressful situation.Further, it provides the reader with tools to successfully navigate the system. Real life examples are integrated throughout, adding interest and even comfort.Every physician and physician-to-be should include this in their mandatory reading. I was surprised to find hope and solace in a book that is thoroughly informative and relevant. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evocative, exceptional, and enlightening!
As a pre-med student I found this book incredibly informative. It provides a balanced and unique perspective on a very important issue. The use of real life situations makes the book both poignant and approachable to the lay person or professional.Every pre-medical, medical student and resident should read this book in preparation for their career. It adds depth and scope to ones understanding of the importance of patient safety, quality of care, and risk management. This book not only can help one avoid liability but can also provide a guide through the difficult and often foreign legal system surrounding medical malpractice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some helpful tips.
I was able to cull some helpful information as I set out to start my own practice, but felt that there was much redundancy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, if only for reassurance
I enjoyed the book and found many of the suggestions useful. For someone in the fourth year of practice, it was reassuring to know that I had made some sound decisions based on the authors recommendations.I also found some suggestions on how to manage some pithalls that I am now experiencing.Overall a useful read for those in private practice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth reading.
I remain interested in learning everything I can about running a bottom-line-focused practice. That includes, of course, an appropriate number of satisfied patients, appropriate spending, forward-thinking staff, etc. These are essentials in keeping a private practice in business these days. But, this book does not provide enough details towards this end.For example, almost the entire first half of the book is dedicated to finding a place to set up your business and also how to work within a group of providers (what that has to do with private practice is lost on me).If I had to do it over, I would not have invested in this book.I suggest you save your money and get it from the library if you are curious. If you want to spend money on a good book that is focused on the bottom-line, read "Maximizing Billing and Collections in the Medical Practice"by the AMA--you can buy it used on Amazon:Maximizing Billing and Collections in the Medical PracticeIt's full of insight on how to set up and keep your practice in business.

1-0 out of 5 stars A book for therapists, not physicians
I am a physician in the process of establishing my own practice - and wanted some books to help me along this path.I have been part of a large group, and therefore have some real world experience in the private practice world. This book's author is a psychologist, and I found many sections of the book were just not applicable for a medical practice. For example, in the section on scheduling appointments, the leading suggestion is that the practitioner schedule his/her own appointments as a means of establishing a personal connection. This just doesn't jibe with the reality of a medical practice which has a much higher volume of calls and patients than a therapist - who probably sees 6 to 8 patients per day. Many other aspects of the book are therapist-centric, and either irrelevant or simply inaccurate for a medical practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essentials of Private Practice
I have been wanting to take the leap to private practice for sometime now and just haven't had the courage... a little scarey to be off on my own.I have friends who have encouraged me so I needed a little more guidance. This book really helped me with seeing that YES it is doable and I can do it.It is an easy read with lots of basic, common sense info plus stuff I didn't really think about.Knowing the basics about business and then that being confirmed really helps with the confidence aspect. This book has lots of great stuff you need, precautions to take and how to plan your approach. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insomnia be gone!
This is a well organized an readable book on an affliction that all of us share to one degree or another. The book has specific guidelines on how to take steps to reduce stress that I found insightful and novel.

Perhaps my favorite feature are the audio tracks. The 6 minute track can be done anywhere at any time and I have found, can notch down my BP.The insomnia track works like no medication! I downloaded it to my iPod and put it by my bedside. Can't sleep? Put one or two buds in your ears and press play. A few minutes listening to the insomnia track and I am out for the rest of the night!

Thanks Dr. Winner!

Dr. Winner's suggestions are nothing new and are available in almost every self-help or stress-management book. Unfortuantely, there is no 6 minute way to eliminate stress. There are only ways to cope with stress and those book introduces you to a handful of well known relaxation strategies....

The single best way to reduce stress in your life is to quit your job. Just a fact that for most people their job is the biggest stressor!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone can profit from this book
I've found Dr. Jay Winner's new book very helpful for dealing with the stresses that we all encounter in our everyday lives. The book is written in a friendly, conversational tone, the exercises are both easy to use and effective, and the price is very reasonable for a package that includes two CDs. I recommend this book to all of my university students, who certainly have to deal with a variety of new stresses in their lives, and I recommend it to you as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Jay Winner has done it again.......
Dr. Winner's first book "stress management made simple" is one book that is always on our nightstand, the more I read it the more I get out of it. His teachings are easy to understand and really enjoyable. It won't be long before you start to benefit from the chapters.
My wife and myself are very grateful for the tools Jay has taught us, they have helped with everything from our jobs to our children and of course our marriage. A less stress out life is a better life. I have started to read "take the stress out of your life" and it looks like I better make a new spot on the nightstand.
A copy will make a wonderful gift to our daughter in college.

Best ever for me. His voice, accent and method used helped me tremendously as others of Glenn Harolds CD"s did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for making my life better!
I have bought and listened to many cds which touted they were hypnosis for stress reduction. This one is the very best. I am amazed how it worked for me the very first time I used it! It has changed my life for the better. I am so grateful! This cd relaxed me, put me in a great state of mind and eased my anxiety. I felt totally refreshed and happy after listening to this cd and found that hearing it twice a day would even be better. It's wonderful to have access to such quality hynotherapy!I feel lucky to have found this cd and have recommend it to anyone and everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars tremendously effective hypnosis-relaxation practice
Janet Dekker is a tremendously insightful hypnotherapist. She recognises that the impediment to effective self control and self-esteem is often the impact of negative messages and self-messages and begins the journey to healing by first targeting these (as seen in her Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem CD). In this hypno-routine she instills the stress-countering suggestions by first getting you calm, deeply relaxed & at ease, includes an effective deep-breathing cue and teaches you how to engage in relaxing self-hypnosis by allowing YOURSELF to relax. The impact, I can personally testify, is remarkably effective. The only problematic suggestion input to my mind is the idea that staying calm and under rational control is ALWAYS the best way through any situation. Like all massive generalisations this one is open to question. There are surely situations where strong expression becomes necessary and people with whom only powerfully conveyed messages work; and of course one needs to feel one's feelings fully and intensely, without being overwhelmed by them or at their mercy. I guess if one is aware of this idea, the suggestions will not work to produce emotional flattening or repression. That said, this is an outstanding product: humane, compassionate and actively helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stood out above the rest
This is a great CD.I was concerned that hypnosis would not work on me, but the last couple of times I've used the CD I've awakened from my "trance" and noticed I'd been drooling! And I was sitting up to listen!

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but disappointing in small ways
At the beginning of the recording Ms Decker says that in case of emergency you will be awake and alert. For some reason she restates this a couple of times in the course of the program.I found this very distracting and unnecessary.Generally the content is good, but sometimes it sounded too much like reading from a text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt
I had been in a really bad place for a long time when a friend told me about this book.At first as I was reading it I got angry. I wondered why someone would tell me to read a book that is so painful to read. As I read the first few chapters I was so mad at my friend, but I just kept reading it so I could ask her why she would torture me with this book. Suddenly, right in the middle of the book there was such a turning point that I honestly believe it has changed my life forever. It's inspiring. It gave me ideas of things to try that I'd never even heard of before and that actually gave me some kind of relief. This is the first time I've ever written a review, however, I've read many novels. I would recommend this book to anyone who has had a loss or multiple losses.

This Book gave answers to questions we all ask ourselves when the unimaginable loss of a beloved friend or family member strikes without warning.

Product Description
In his best-selling The Cortisol Connection, Dr. Shawn Talbott explained how elevated levels of the cortisol hormone, when triggered by stress, will increase appetite, enhance fat storage, disrupt blood sugar control, and eventually lead to obesity that can cause diabetes and other serious conditions. This concise follow-up puts Talbott's cortisol control, diet, and exercise ideas into an accessible format.

The Cortisol Connection Diet shows beleaguered dieters how to eat for quality and for quantity at every meal. It focuses on the quality of carbs, fats, and proteins as well as the quantity, and explains how to use food, exercise, and dietary supplements to control cortisol and blood sugar. Most importantly, the book shows readers how to change their metabolic response to food and shed those seemingly impossible last 20 pounds. Included are a three-week log to chart diet, exercise, and supplements; and a sample regimen for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and supplements. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review: The Cortisol Connection Diet, by Shawn Talbott, Ph.D.
I heard Shawn Talbott speak on a teleseminar a couple weeks ago, about cortisol and testosterone and their role in stress, weight reduction, and health.I was impressed - the man seemed to know what he's talking about and everything he said resonated with things I already knew, half-knew, or suspected:
* Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, is a potent appetite signal for high-calorie, high-carb foods; it tells our fat cells, especially those in the belly region, to store as much fat as possible, while dialing down the body's calorie burning rate and slowly shrinking muscle tissue.
* Stress management leads to reduced cortisol, reduced fat - especially belly fat - and an increased metabolic rate, to burn more calories.
* Testosterone goes up as cortisol goes down (yes, in women too!), and that's a good thing. We should aim to balance these two hormones, and that's what exercise does for us - this is the main benefit of exercise, not burning calories per se.Walking three times per week will do it!
* Hydrate! - We need plenty of water to melt away fat; it's a chemical, metabolic thing..
* High cortisol (high stress) leads to lowered sex drive, bone loss, and suppresses your immune system.Talbott noted how college infirmaries fill up with sick students at the end each semester, because the stress of exams and papers has reduced their immunity.
* Eat flavinoids (bright colored fruits and vegetables) and a balance of complex carbohydrates, healthy proteins, and healthy fats to combat cortisol.
Talbot, trained in sports medicine, health management, exercise physiology, and nutritional biochemistry, is an associate clinical professor of nutrition at the University of Utah, a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Dietary Supplements (for health professionals) and SupplementWatch (for consumers).
An earlier book, The Cortisol Connection, How Stress Makes You Fat and Ruins Your Health And What You Can Do About It, is a more general treatment of stress, its effects, and how to control it.In The Cortisol Connection Diet (2004), Talbot concentrates on diet: what to eat and how much, including recommendations for supplements (such as Green Tea Extract). He recommends three meals and three snacks per day, and introduces The Helping Hand - your hand - a readily available physical measure for how much proteins, carbs, and fats to eat. This is not so much a diet as it is a common-sense guide - that common-sense being informed by an understanding of the role of cortisol and other hormones in metabolism as it relates to weight and health.
Talbot also critiques popular Diets: Atkins, Ornish, Zone, Weight Watchers, Ephedra (herbal stimulant), liquid. Here is what he says about the Atkins Diet:
Q: What are the side effects associated with the Atkins Diet (low carb / high protein)?
A: It depends on how the diet is approached. For example, an "Atkins" meal composed of salmon and green salad has no side effects (and obviously has many health benefits) - but an "Atkins" meal composed of a bacon double cheeseburger (hold the bun) is not good for your heart or your waistline.Eating too much protein, which can be a problem with some versions of low-carb diets, can lead to dehydration (water loss is often confused with weight / fat loss) - and dehydration can slow the metabolic rate and make weight maintenance more difficult.Too much protein in the diet can also displace other important food sources: If you've filled up on meat and cheese, you may not have room left to eat your salad, so the diet may fail to provide enough of many vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, and may also be lacking in fiber.
Any diet will work, especially at first, but as you progress, many of the popular Diets become counter-productive, especially as you try to lose those last 10 or 20 pounds.Expect Talbot's recommendations to take you all the way, and allow you to maintain that target weight for the long term.
The Cortisol Connection Diet is short - 130 pages with appendices, index, sample meals and snacks, and food log forms, all in a small page format - easily read in one or two sittings.I found it straightforward and easy to understand.
I have always known that stress is important in weight control; containing emotional eating is a major part of the WHY Weight Reduction Program (© by Judith E. Pearson, Ph.D.) that I use with my weight clients. But in part because of Dr. Talbott, I am coming to understand that stress is central, not only to weight issues but to most of the issues we deal with in Hypnotherapy.

4-0 out of 5 stars good information
informative and pretty close to what I was thinking as far as addressing the issues in my life

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad advice.
I did not read this book; however, I took a look at the example diet, and I knew not to waste my money.
If you have gained weight because of elevated cortisol levels, you are most likely hypoglycemic. In other words, your body over-reacts to sugar and pumps out tons of insulin. When it does this, your body receives the message to store more fat.In his sample diet, he instructs the reader to eat fruit alone for a snack. That is the last thing you want to do.The fruit will drive up insulin and cortisol levels.
Also, it is common knowledge that all forms of coffee, even decaf raise insulin and cortisol levels. So why in the world would he list that on his diet????
Please, if you are having problems with your cortisol, get it checked first, don't assume.http://www.diagnostechs.com/main.htm
Also, a GREAT book on this subject is Adrenal Fatigue by Dr. Wilson.
I suspect the people who have given him the 5-star ratings know this author personally, or have not followed through with the outcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cortisol Connection Diet - A "Must Read"!
If you have read any "diet" books from the past 10 years, and then attempted in vain to follow the advice in those books, you will really enjoy and appreciate reading the Cortisol Connection Diet. For starters, it's a very "easy read".It's as though you are listening to a casual conversation from a friend. The information is presented in a logical and easy to follow manner.I read the book cover to cover on a short plane ride. There were two particular aspects of the book that I thought were very unique and extremely helpful.First are the highlights at the end of each chapter.I have found myself on numerous occasions, going back to the book, reviewing the chapter highlights and quickly getting the information I was looking for.Secondly, the sample menu plans and daily logs at the end of the book were great!I would put this on anyone's "must read list"!

5-0 out of 5 stars At last! The correct diet for stress symptoms!
I don't do stress well at all! After years as a first grade teacher and a stressful personal life, stress almost hospitalized me.Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep.I was running on a pure histamine. My adrenals were shot-no emergency energy!I was covered with rash, depressed when I could come down enough. My muscles were wasting away. Then my thyroid crashed and I could barely drag my legs around to walk. After the thyroid started up again, the doctors "blood type diet" didn't do much. Then I saw an article on Dr. Talbott in a magazine and followed the advice while I waited for the book to arrive.I've only been on the plan for 10 days and the depression is gone and, oh, yes the brain fog.I can do 30 minutes a day on my crosstrainer.I am sleeping better and feel more positive. All this after I had to quit work five years ago because this syndrome is so debilitating.Great book!Read it!Use it!It's for everyone since we're all living under stress.I'm into The Cortison Connection now.I fell like I'm giving myself a second chance at life and loving it.
If you're tired of starving to loose weight and want to eat to achieve a healthy body and spirit, this is the best.I don't have those awful sugar cravings anymore. Did I mention I was on heavy Prednisone for five years and had drug-induced hypoglycemia?Anyway, this food plan (it's not a diet because you're never hungry) is perfect.I was never able to get the weight to drop off and now it's coming off.
Thanks, Dr. Talbott.People like you come along far too infrequently.Penecillin and the polio vaccines for the 20th century.Obesity for the 21st!If anyone should question this books importance, open your eyes to how few fit people you see. We've been "digging our own graves with a spoon"! Examine the statistics. It makes perfect SENSE. It's soooo simple! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A top pick for parents
Children become the dominating figures of one's life when they enter the picture. "Parenting Without Stress: How to Raise Responsible Kids While Keeping a Life of Your Own" is a guide for parents who want to attain the perfect balance in life where they can actually have a personal life and still show love and care for their children. Parenting is a naturally stressful thing, but it can be repelled through wise planning and making connections. "Parenting Without Stress" is a top pick for parents who love their children but have their love stressing them out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
Dr. Marvin Marshall's parenting book is easy to read, understand and implement. It truly does create a less stressful home environment for the parents and the children. The principles are logical and "brain friendly"; kids see that the world really is an orderly place that makes sense and that there is an inextricable link between choices and consequences.By utilizing these parenting strategies, children are taught that they have the power and the skills to control their own destiny. This is an excellent resource for parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Book
Dr. Marshall presents discipline as an on-going living experience without coercion, manipulation, "naughty chairs" time-out, charts, stickers, treats, and threats.Parenting is a relationship with kids--a teaching-learning-living relationship. For this reason, the book's subtitle: How to Raise Responsible Kids While Keeping a Life of Your Own is possible, truly unique among child rearing books, and so desirable among parental goals.

Parenting without Stress is indeed a landmark book. The author explains, through an abundance of practical ideas, examples, and anecdotes, a new and different direction from the traditional emphases on rearing obedient, adult-pleasing, conforming children to an innovative concept for raising children as independent, productive, self-disciplined, human beings able to take self-confident responsibility now and through the remainder of their lives.Kids are not learning to be members of society; they are members of society.
