5-0 out of 5 stars Sensible help for controlling Stress
Mary Southernland knows stress can't be avoided, but she has some very good advice for ways to control it. In today's world we struggle to do everything and please everyone. Southerland reminds us that God created us, he loves us, and we only have to please Him.

Stress is a deadly disease, that will make us sick and shorten our lives. This book spoke to me in many ways. One thing she pointed out made me stop and think; Fatigue is not a spiritual gift. I hadn't thought about it that way, but she's right. We rush to meetings, take on jobs, wear outselves out "in the service of the Lord," but that doesn't make us more holy. Even God rested on the seventh day, not because He needed it, but to drive home the point that we do.
Her version of the 23rd Psalm is worth memorizing or at least keeping a copy handy. In addition to very good tips on how to beat stress, she uses scripture referrences to back up what she says. There's even a Bible Study Guide in the back. Escaping the Stress trap is a very well written book with a timely message. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book was recommended for a class in stress management coaching. It is very practical. It starts out as a workbook to teach how to recognize different forms of stress and then offers a variety of techniques that can be personalized. This book is a great reference book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm Even More Stressed Now!
The Everything Ghost Book is very good and informative; I bought The Everything Stress Management Book because I thought it would be of the same quality.I was mistaken. The only thing I learned from this book is that farting and burping (together) -- yes, thats right, FARTING & BURPING -- are the 5th Worst Habit of Americans.

I bought this book hoping that it would help me reduce stress (I have an anxiety disorder and migraine headaches triggered by stress), the book itself made me even more tense, so much so, I did not finish it.I purchased it with the hopes that The Everything Stress Management Book would include instructions for stress reduction techniques.Instead, all Eve Adamson writes about these stress reduction techniques is to tell the reader to take a class about any number of techniques. She does spend quite a bit of time attacking people who take the easy way out, which I admit I do sometimes (i.e. picking up something to go for dinner rather than cooking it yourself, etc.). I barely have enough time to get all of my things done already; I don't have time for a class.

The reason that I purchased the book is so that I could practice stress reduction techniques in the privacy of my own home at anytime of the day or night.I was very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stress Mgmt Book
its an eay read & good reference for class. unfortunately I'm learning that I'm more stressed than I realized

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I am a Master's Level clinician working on my doctorate in clinical psychology. This book is not as great as its 1985 predecessor. In that previous edition, there were more relaxation scripts that were excellent to use personally and with clients/patients.This edition acts more like a reference book as well as an advertisement for the author's website (which incidentally did not have much on it that was helpful for me). I did like some of the suggestions regarding the use of technology and how it can cause stress or reduce it by the way it is used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, helpful, informative
First of all, this book is very reader-friendly. It doesn't torture you with medical wicky wacky jargons. At the same time, the author doesn't treat you like a baby. He gives it to you straight and clear.

The book talks about different types of relaxation techniques to unnerve your mind and body, gives the descriptions of major stressors in lives and how to handle them, etc...

This book is great read and actually practicing the skills that the author describes make it even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and time tested information!

One of the best books I have ever read. I have had major depression for 3 years and the things in the book really work!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Instinct to Heal sent to a friend of mine by Amazon.com where I chose the dealer A1Books. Perfect Brand New Condition.
Excellent book on how to handle stress.Written by a French psychiatrist, I discovered it in France some 5 years ago.Not only the author quotes many examples of stress related discomfort and diseases, but he guides his readers to recovery. He indicates combined medications which can help.He shows diagrams and photos of what stress generates in the brain. Ever since I read that book, I feel better and can face life with self-control.I have sent that book to friends and relatives. They all praised it and thanked me for it. I use Amazon.com and choose there the best dealer. In that case it was A1Books

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book - appropriate for the health care professional or the layman
I've recommended this book to several of my family and friends.I've had personal experience with most of the techniques he describes and have had positive results.

5-0 out of 5 stars My family physician asked me to read this book...
I have been struggling with anxiety for a few years and just recently also started suffering from depression too.My family physician recommended that I read this book.I am always open to any alternatives to medicine, especially when it comes to anxiety.I wouldn't say this book changed my life, but I did walk away with a lot of good information. Some of the things I was already aware of from ready other books like this one, but I like how this author backs it up with scientific research.I thought it was easy to read, yet very informative. You may not agree with all of the methods used in this book, but I bet you will find at least one that will help you deal with depression/anxiety.

5-0 out of 5 stars The secret of good health
This is an amazing book written by a Professor of Psychiatry and practising psychiatrist who thinks outside the box.Yes, a pill or medical procedure relieves pain but this good doctor wants to understand the source of a patient's pain.In treating emotional disorders he might try acupuncture, EMDR (eye movement therapy), or nutritional supplements and personally if I was out of control I would prefer taking fish oil to having someone tamper with my brain. The author relates many personal experiences and his encounters with patients are always compassionate. Ultimately he tells us that the secret to health is stress management, exercise and improved nutrition.

Product Description

"Ilona Meagher is a powerful advocate for American combat veterans of all generations. With mental health issues facing hundreds of thousands of returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, Moving A Nation to Care brings desperately needed attention to the devasting hidden costs of war. Anyone who wants to 'support the troops' should read this important book."--Paul Rieckhoff

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in our returning combat troops is one of the most catastrophic issues confronting our nation. Yet, despite the fact that more than 25 percent of the troops that have left the military since 2003 have been diagnosed with PTSD, and that many who suffer symptoms are unlikely to seek help because of the stigma of this terrible disease, our government has remained willfully neglectful the plight of our veterans.

Moving A Nation to Care: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and America's Returning Troops is a grassroots call to action designed to put the issue of PTSD in our returning troops front and center before the American public. In addition to presenting interviews with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffering with PTSD, this book is the most comprehensive resource to date for concerned citizens who want to understand the complex political, social and health-related issues of PTSD, with an eye toward "moving our nation to care" to do what is necessary to help our fighting men and women. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars PTSD STORIES
THE PTSD PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED BY RETURNING VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS IS REAL AND IN MANY INSTANCES UNRECOGNIZED. THE BOOK GOES INTO THE HISTORY OF PTSD, WHEN IT WAS NOT GIVEN A NAME PRIOR TO THE VIET NAM WAR EXPERIENCES, AND GIVES AN ACCURATE HISTORY OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THE PROBLEM. THE BOOK IS A GOOD STARTING POINT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE THE PROBLEM OR THINK THAT THEY DO, BUT DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO GO FOR HELP.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book that helped bring a national tragedy to light.
This small book is no longer cutting edge but is an excellent read regardless.Ilona's research and concise writing was instumental in bringing the true scope of Post Tramatic Stress Disorder to light. The fact that we are doing positive things to help our returning soldiers today is at least in some measure due to this book. Plus, it is an easy read! Borrow it or buy it... but, read it. Warning, it will be hard not to care after reading this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving a Nation to Care - this is an amazing book!
This is truly an amazing book. It is very helpful and it really gives you hope that people are starting to take note and take action to help these families.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I felt as if I was reading a "report" from the internet and not an informative book on PTSD.Too much political bias for me, could have done w/out that, very slick job. There were a few interesting and valid view points and facts, but the meat and potatoes of this book could have been written in 20 pages in bullet format. I don't care much for reading books that are a compilation of information from other books. I have read many of her sources books and found them far more helpful and valuable.

I am a strong supporter of our military and understand PTSD and it's affects all too well. I have lost two Soldiers to suicide upon return from Iraq. If I weren't already in the mix I am not so sure this book would "move" me to care, I was hopeful by the title and reviews that it would inspire others to do just that "care" more and get involved. At some points I felt like I was reading anti-war, anti-American rhetoric and not about PTSD.The bias in the media and our own politicians wanting this war to be failure has hurt our Troops more than anything.I do agree Rumsfeld was an idiot and screw up in her political expressions.

I found no inspiration in this book, other than to agree the DOD needs to start tracking suicides of our Veterans post deployment, some are hard to call like high speed car accidents late at night, intentional or accident? I do agree more of us need to put pressure on the VA and politicians to force the VA to function properly now and not later, but again nothing in this writing stirred any fire from within.Maybe if PTSD and war is new to you it might, I can only hope.

Enough already w/understanding and research of PTSD, we have enough information and it's time to start progressive, productive treatment and support. As the author points out PTSD has been around since the dawn of war.The VA has always been poorly managed and needs to be cleaned up, this is nothing new, wecan't blame all of it on Iraq and the Stan influx or present administration, though they do need to step up.During peace time no one cared what the VA was doing and now our country is paying the price in more ways than one. I did agree that the miitary and gov have created some nice catch 22's for our guys returning so they don't have to spend the money to take care of our Soldiers and Marines.

So I painfully give this book one star, just was hoping for more. ... Read more
