5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
Great book! Just as described came sealed in a bag and everything.
Thank you!

1-0 out of 5 stars The comment of to read this book as a one of PWS.
The comment which let the whole contents of the book pass also seem to be the introduction textbook for the circumstances of the old stammering research on stammering, an outline, and from now on aiming at a speech therapist. The explanation which compared the "phenomenon of stammering" near introduction to failure of a car also has description for which expression is not appropriate from the viewpoint of a researcher. Although equipment and theories which are considered to be ineffective are enumerated, a decisive place is not in logic. There is also no solution and I regret. In order to use it about clinical introduction, many partial old contents are seen. There is no persuasive power in the stammering clinical spot, and a person concerned and the remedy in connection with it, and it seemed to draw the ideal of theory. Although I am also a stammerer and was in contact with many stammering examples, I thought that most books described the right thing and were not necessarily doing it. The direction which aimed at that the importance of person-concerned research is important, "associating with stammering and superior and receiving", and QOL (Quality of Life) regards life as the ability to live with it being significant. I think if it grows into reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars much better than the previous edition
it is more complete, modern and usefull than the previous edition. it is always a pleasure to study this book, it really helps me reorganize my knowledge over this specific scientific field of Speech and Language Therapy

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful but academic reading
My son developed a moderate stuttering problem at age 5. I found the book helpful. It's not so much a guide for dealing with the problem (like do steps A, B, and C then you're cured) as it is a review of the current applied research. It's a lot more information than I've found anywhere else. It left us very prepared to talk with speech therapists.

In the end, I had to conclude that nobody is sure why this happens or whether early intervention really works.

My mother mentioned by change that I stuttered badly for a short time and recovered. The text discusses that there is a strong relationship within families. Sure enough, at age 5 1/2, my son's stuttering is down to almost nothing. It was quite a relief.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book...
I am using this book for one of my second year undergrad Speech Pathology classes and I am very pleased. This book is extremely easy to read yet it contains a lot of detail. It puts you in the shoes of a "stutterer" or "person who stutters", and it also puts you in the shoes of a Speech Therapist. It is very relatable. This is one of the first textbooks that I actually enjoy reading, it is hard to put down. Fascinating information about the world of stuttering; its causes, affects and treatments. I just wish that more people who stuttered would see a Speech Therapist so we could gather even more information about this rare speech disorder. ... Read more

Product Description
Puzzled about stuttering? If so, here is a book, written in clear, every-day language, that fits together the pieces of the stuttering puzzle as never before. The key to its approach is the Valsalva Hypothesis. This exciting new theory proposes that stuttering blocks may result from a neurological confusion between the voice and the Valsalva mechanism (which normally assists us in exerting effort and forcing things out of the body). The book demonstrates how physical and psychological factors may interact to stimulate and perpetuate stuttering through a "Valsalva-Stuttering Cycle."

The book sheds new light on virtually every aspect of stuttering behavior - its causes, its paradoxes (e.g., why it's worse in some instances but not others), and its many forms of treatment. Finally, it suggests an experimental self-therapy program, called Valsalva Control, aimed at controlling the Valsalva mechanism, breaking the stuttering cycle, and freeing the stutterer's inherent fluency. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Indebted to Mr. Parry for his hard work
This book describes the way I stutter more than any thing else I have read. Mr. Parry has posted videos on youtube and was even available to phone conference with me free of charge. A trial lawyer, he has spent his life trying to crack the puzzles and paradoxes of stuttering, and anyone who uses this book to help them gain a grip on their problem can easily see the effort he put into writing it. I hope I can give back a fraction of what he has to people should I ever master my fluency. The practice routines are very helpful and if you are persistent with them and change your mental approaches to speech, you will begin to notice changes after only a few months. Highest recommendation I could give. Thanks Mr. Parry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning - looks like bogus reviews
All these 5-Star reviews made me suspicious, so I took the trouble to do some digging. On the first two pages, most of the reviews are from single-review commenters. Needless to say, this looks shady. On top of that, the reviewers are a veritable United Nations - Africa, South America Asia, Britain, USA on two pages. Also note that only one reviewer bothers to mentionthe "secret" of the book - the butthole hypothesis! C'mon now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unlocking the mystery of stuttering
This book is a must read for people who are stuttering. The author Bill Parry explains the physical components of stuttering as well as the psychological aspect in a easy straight forward manner. Mr. Parry unlocks the great mystery of why people who stutter tend to be caught up in struggle with their speech and offers easy to follow self-help strategies to take control of your valsalva maneuver. This is the most interesting book regarding stuttering I have ever read and I recommend it to everyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Of course, the book is titled Understanding and Controlling Stuttering. The first half of the book, the "understanding" part of it, is fantastic, and goes into deep detail.

The second half, which is supposed to reveal a "comprehensive new approach" can be summarized in one sentence: relax your butt hole. I am not making this up!! The author is convinced that relaxing your anus will also relax the same part of your body that is keeping you from breathing and making you stutter.

I don't think I have to tell you that his suggestion is bogus, although his reasoning is somewhat sound. As another reviewer implied , the author molds the entire book around his hypothesis, as if begging you to believe him.

This book is pretty good for the "understanding" aspect, but the "controlling" aspect, read Self Therapy for the Stutterer instead, which has tried-and-true methods of control. For those of you thinking of buying this book to find the miracle to cure your stuttering, this isn't it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Clinical Resource for Stuttering Therapy
I went to Peter Ramig's stuttering therapy conference in Sacramento and I was very interested in his therapy approach. I bought his book through Amazon and it is a great resource for explaining the different techniques and providing Fluency shaping and stuttering Modification intervention. There is even information about stuttering in English and Spanish. I don't think I have ever seen such a complete guide. Thank you Mr. Ramig this will be very helpful when I approach preschool intervention as well as students in their teen years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alfred Hitchcock and the 3 Investigators - Screaming Parrot
I received the item much quicker that I had expected. It was exactly what I expected. I would gladly purchase from this seller again.
Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent juvenile fiction for its time...
...but dated somewhat.

The Mystery of the Stuttering Parrot is written pretty much the way juvenile fiction should be written. It's a book that can still be appreciated by adults even though aimed at a juvenile audience. The plot is realistic and logical given the premises of the genre. Dying men, of course, don't usually concoct convoluted puzzles as their last acts but this is a time honored plot device of detective fiction whether adult or juvenile. One can accept that three boys might be commissioned to find a missing parrot and that they would then get caught up in a search for a missing painting. There is no heavy reliance on luck or coincidence that one often finds in juvenile series like the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. And although the actual town the boys live in is fictitious the larger setting, southern California, is real and familiar. The original edition used the familiar name of Alfred Hitchcock as a sales crutch, someone who would be quite familiar to boys of the '60s from TV's "Alfred Hitchcock Presents".

But can the book be appreciated by today's kids? I have my doubts in this age of cell phones, computers, and the internet. Kids today have no more idea who Alfred Hitchcock is than they do James Dean. (Hitchcock was dropped from later editions after his death and replaced by a fictional character.) But if you have a 10-12 year old who can stay away from the computer or TV for a few hours at a time you could do a lot worse than suggesting this book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars To-to-to be or not to-to-to be a great mystery!
After solving the mystery of a nearby haunted castle, the Three Investigators have their second case. It's not as exciting, finding a missing parrot, except that the parrot stutters. But the case quickly goes from mundane to interesting, as they find that this case involves 7 birds, all taught to repeat a part of a riddle. And it soon becomes dangerous when they realize that others are interested in the whereabouts of the parrots, and will stop at nothing to get them, including kidnapping. The Three Investigators will need all their smarts and some luck to solve this mystery.

The Mystery of the Stuttering Parrot has all the frights of The Secret of Terror Castle, but with a truly puzzling mystery to solve added in.The plot is extremely clever, and draws the reader in expertly with the riddle of the parrots.New investigative methods are introduced, sometimes with good results and sometimes not, but the genius of this series is apparent in this book.I loved it 30 years ago when I read it as a kid, and my son and I loved reading it now.Exciting and interesting enough to keep even reluctant readers coming back for more. And as others have commented, I definitely think there's potential for a movie here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Casey's review
I liked this book because it was very interesting and I didn't want to stop reading it. This was a puzzle kind of a mystery it was cool. I like how they needed to search for the painting.

Well three investigators are called to find missing parrots but end up trying to find a picture worth a lot of money. In order to find the painting they would have to get all the seven parrots and when they talked they would say a clue to where the picture is.

You would have to definitely be a mystery type reader to really get into this book. It's not a hard book at all its king of hard on some parts but that's it. A boy would like this book better then a girl would like it. You would have to be in at least 7th grade to understand the book. If you consider a 182 pages long then it's to hard for you but it goes by fast I read this in a week! This was an awesome book and there was so much action and adventure and a lot of mystery and there also was a lot of cliffhangers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
In 1978, I was given a hardcopy edition of this very book for my birthday by my Aunt. What kind of relative gives a 9 year old kid a book for his birthday anyway??

Little did I know that this book would lead me to over forty others and the Greatest series/collection of books that I have ever read. I love the Three Investigators and I feel that this was the best book of the entire series.

The author takes great care in guiding you through the "mystery"/adventure and lets Jupiter Jones put it all together in the end.

I don't want to spoil the very ending, so I won't go into detail...just be assured that this book will delight a juvenile or adult.

Buy this now! I bought this for my pre-teenage daughter and son. Sure beats them wasting their time reading about witches or vampires!!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MYSTERY OF THE STUTTERING PARROTT (THE THREE INVESTIGATORS SERIES)

(We managed to find the old Alfred Hitchcock version).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Parrot Stutters!
This book is the second in the series, following our introduction to the Three Investigators in "The Secret of Terror Castle."As we learned in the first book, the Three Investigators are Jupiter Jones, Pete Crenshaw and Bob Andrews.Jupiter is the intelligent, sometimes inadvertently arrogant member of the group who has a tendency to be condescending.Pete Crenshaw is typically the muscle of the group.Pete is usually quite fearless.Bob Andrews, who begins the series with a broken leg, works at the library and handles records and research for the group.

In this story, the boys are investigating the case of a missing parrot at the request of Alfred Hitchcock.A friend of Mr. Hitchcock had recently purchased a parrot that stutters, and shortly after the purchase the parrot disappeared. The Three Investigators are on the case!

Initially, the boys, and perhaps the reader, might wonder whether this mystery is going to be interesting.Never fear. The boys soon encounter a renowned art thief and a suspicious fat man who threatens the boys. The three boys also discover that there are more parrots missing and that their mystery has compounded. The mystery deepens as the boys learn that a mysterious man trained the parrots and the parrots may be speaking a riddle that could lead to a treasure. This story has enough twists that many adults might find it entertaining.

Quite a few children's mystery book series have become classics. Most people are familiar with Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and Tom Swift.Even the Boxcar Children are relatively well-known.However, Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators were well-written books that offered an intelligent, interesting and more contemporary alternative to many of the earlier classic series. Many people recall the earlier series well, but the Three Investigators series, which Robert Arthur wrote and debuted in 1964, has, for now, largely been overshadowed by the other series and generally forgotten.Fortunately, all of these books are available either from Amazon or from other internet sources.

If you are looking for mystery books for children and you are looking for an alternative to the Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys and Tom Swift, I highly recommend the Three Investigator series.

Enjoy!

Product Description
Have you ever wondered why most people who block or stutter do not stammer every single time that they speak?Indeed, most people who stammer are actually consistently fluent in certain contexts. When by themselves, speaking to a pet, or speaking to a person with whom they are very comfortable, they do speak fluently. This paradox has been a puzzle for people who stammer and for speak pathologists for many years.

Now this remarkable publication offers a completely new approach to treating this debilitating condition. Dr. Bodenhamer explains that this phenomenon results from the thinking (cognition) process of the stammerer or stutterer as he or she associates speaking with the rising panic of blocking.Because blocking and stuttering are learned behaviors, they can be unlearned. One way of doing this is through the use of cognitive techniques such as those of NLP or Neuro-semantics, both of which are primarily cognitive therapies. This book included these processes which have been used successfully with clients who suffered from anxiety and panic disorders. These two methodologies provide ways of working to change blocking and stuttering behaviors by altering the way a person thinks. ... Read more

Mastering Blocking And Stuttering: A Cognitive Approach to Achieving Fluency
I have long silently rated Bob Bodenhammer's work and this book when I found it last year was a joy. Written in Bob's professional and well practised manner, it not only looks at and discusses, blocking and stuttering, it also provides useful and appropriate solutions. Using the skills of Neuro Linguistic Programming to help reprogram thoughts and actions, even those well hidden ones it leads the user to a profound and lasting change. (I think only for use by the consummate professional to make the changes postively permanent). And still a useful book to indicate to the lay person how changes may be made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This is a contructive book for those who want to improve their speech! My speech has improved significantly when I effectively applied the principles written in this book.It is important for me to realise that stuttering is a learnt behaviour and there is hope for cure. What this book addresses is the fact that stutterers focus so much on what others would think of them rather than focus on what others say and the environment around.Like most stutterers, the fear of meeting new people and being in the middle of the attention i.e being asked of all sorts of questions can be freightening.I can now think of a few instances where this fear has diminished and I communicated near 100% fluency.I was able to look at the person asking me questions and not worrying about the other people standing around would think. When I was able to do that, I begin to step into the zone of how fluent people think.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book for people who want to be EX stutterers!
This book contains cold hard facts and detailed information on what you can do to get your self in control and in a calm state to live life fully while speaking as well!

I think this book can help you tremendously. Try out some of the many great exercises as you read. Simply reading this will most likely help you to start feeling better and less alone! The better you feel, the better you speak.

There is a learned behavior associated with stuttering.
It is about more than controlling your lips or tenseness.
This book will actually show you what to do to begin dealing with stuttering in a way that works! It works!

Do you need some proof that the cutting edge ideas in this book work!!?

I used to stutter so badly and had so much shame about it that I would get in line at a restaurant for a meal and if someone got behind me in line I would get so nervous about stuttering that I would let them go first so I could have a chance to say what I wanted without holding up the line. Feeling humiliated hurt more than waiting in line until everybody was out of it. My thinking was that if less people heard me I would feel less humiliated. I wasted so much time doing this in more than one way.

Stop taking second seat to your own life. There is a mindset to healing yourself and regaining your rightful place as a dignified, happy and capable human being!

Through researching the many helpful resources in connection with stuttering I now have reached a place where I have a choice to access confidence and calm. This is of more value than than words can say. Stuttering could have kept me from doing what I really wanted (studying and playing and teaching music).

Stuttering is telling you something. This book will show you how to listen to it, learn the lesson it may have for you and then move on to better things to occupy your life with!!

Who am I to know all this about stuttering? I was the kid who cowered in the back of line for many years. I was the person who had many speech therapists and read many many books. I was told by one therapist that
I would always stutter. The information in this book lines up with a winners mindset. This is the information that worked and is working for me more than anything else I have tried.

And now?
I teach guitar for a living. I speak for up to 60 minutes at a time with nearly 30 students a week. I know what works and what doesn't when I'm in the heat of battle or have had a tough spell, I will reach for this book and it resets me and reminds me about what works! Am I 100% fluent? No, BUT I do something most 100% fluent people do not do. I talk all day for a living and on top of that, I also get up on stage, sing and play music while adding banter in between sets. Sure I still stutter now and again but mostly I know how to handle it and know exactly what to do if I want to be rid of it forever. Just keep on doing what I'm doing...most of it is in this book. Your attitude is everything! A bad attitude can defeat you before you even begin!

This book is right on the mark. The information in it aligns with everything I believe about overcoming this vicious circle of stuttering and anxiety. This book is informed and even recommended by many people who have also overcome stuttering.(Do a search for John C. Harrison and his stuttering hexagon.)

I've seen results in myself, results that I know to be true. Stutterers can overcome stuttering. There are several examples in this book of it as well. These are very real people who you can contact and chat with as well on the neurosemantics stuttering chat on yahoo.

This book works with most other techniques as well so there is no reason to hesitate to work it into your tool box. Buy whatever books you can about stuttering. But do get this one first and foremost as I honestly believe it is the closest to the winning spirit that I have ever read.

This book contains information straight from the newest technologies available. There is more to learning to feel good and confident about your speech than the physical movements of tongue, lips and breath.

There is so much more to stuttering than stuttering itself. This book addresses how to find out what is really going on. It will make you see stuttering in a way that may allow you to open the door and walk out of it.

All the best to you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb resource for speech/language pathologists and people who stutter

Product Description
Stuttering, caused by a disorder in the brain’s right hemisphere, can limit one’s life in a variety of ways, from job choices and advancement to social and romantic opportunities. Typical remedies emphasizing antidepressants and electronic devices have had mixed results at best.

Yoga for Stuttering takes a fresh approach based on ancient methods. Author J.M. Balakrishnan combines an understanding of the neurological aspects of stuttering with yoga methods long used in India for remediation to form a new, natural method for improving vocal fluency. The book presents three related branches of yoga and their accompanying practices, nada yoga (chanting and vocalization), hatha yoga (yoga poses), and raja yoga (guided meditations), providing the reader with sets of voice, breathing, and physical exercises to help relax the body and mind, relieve chronic tension, and achieve fluent speech. The book features photos and illustrations to make the method easy to follow, and no prior knowledge of yoga is required. Yoga for Stuttering was created to meet the needs of those who have not obtained relief through traditional methods and is aimed at both speech pathologists and individuals looking for a holistic, drug-free approach to the condition. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Helpful
I ordered this book with great expectations and was profoundly disappointed in the results. Ms. Balakrishnan obviously has the credentials as a licensed speech pathologist and clinician to know very well the subject she talks about. But, after a promising introduction in which she gives several anecdotal synopses of stutterers she has treated using Yoga combined with other therapies, the book becomes simply a very rudimentary primer on Yoga (and a not very good one, at that).A few basic asanas and breathing exercises having nothing directly related to the complex phenomenon that is stuttering, do not make for anything worthwhile therapeutically to any moderate or severe stutterer. Ms. Balakrishnan includes in the subtitle to her book "Unifying the voice, breath.....to Achieve Fluent Speech"! Really? FLUENT SPEECH?She offers nothing to back up such an extravagant claim. Clearly, YOGA is good for everyone and can contribute to anyone's overall well-being, both physically and spiritually. But the author is peddling her book as something more: as a potential "cure" for stuttering and I for one, am not buying this inflated claim. As someone who has tried ALL the remedies out there, I know full well the daunting challenge anyone has when attempting to find an effective treatment for stuttering: the "cure" word should never be mentioned, as there appears to be none. Certainly the book is worth perusing for a few moments in a bookstore, but I doubt any stutterer would gain any real benefit from the meager exercises and suggestions contained within. The author's heart is in the right place. What is needed is something more than this scant volume provides to the millions of people suffering from the baffling disorder that is chronic adult stuttering.
Nice try-but no cigar: far from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Approach
What a refreshing approach. This results-based and sensitive therapeutic system empowers the student to proceed at a pace set at his/her own comfort and suggests workable, personal and flexible objectives. Its east-meets-west approach is a refreshing alternative to traditional therapies that too often reinforce the very pressures that trigger stuttering."

5-0 out of 5 stars Treatment of Stuttering - Review
This is a most valuable publication for lectures in the field to use and recommend to their students. The up to date research and theoretical underpinnings highlight best practice for stuttering intervention. This has most definitely been a excellent acquisition and I am pleased to say has also been purchased by the University library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Advertising, not science
This review is of one chapter, not the entire book. Different chapters were written by different authors, so the rest of the book may be better.

Chapter 16 is seventeen pages about the SpeechEasy device, written by a SpeechEasy dealer. In it we learn, for example, the interest rate at which they can finance your purchase. (My company makes the SmallTalk device, which competes with the SpeechEasy device.)

Pages 316-317 and page 249 (written by Barry Guitar) refer to a study "showing benefits of SpeechEasy use for...telephone calls." But the study (Zimmerman, 1997) used my company's devices, not SpeechEasy devices!

Page 312 says that SpeechEasy includes FAF technology proven to "increase fluency for many who stutter." This is not true. SpeechEasy includes frequency-shifting; FAF is pitch-shifting. The studies referred to are of pitch-shifting FAF. No studies have investigated whether frequency-shifting alone has an effect on stuttering.

Page 312 says that "Prior to the introduction of the SpeechEasy, DAF...machines were quite large and required cables and headphones." In reality, at least four companies had miniaturized DAF devices on the market before SpeechEasy, at least one of which (my company) had wireless hearing aid technology.

Page 314 says that DAF never results in carryover fluency and that over time the effectiveness "wears off," with a reference to the "Speech Easy Training Manual, 2006." Yet page 318 refers to a study finding that use of my company's DAF devices over a 3-month period resulted in carryover fluency and did not result in "wearing off" of effectiveness. In other words, the authors state facts about the SpeechEasy device as generalizations about all AAF devices.

The same page says regarding SpeechEasy's lack of carryover fluency that "long-term, longitudinal research could potentially disprove this" lack of carryover fluency and that this is an open question "until research provides clearer answers." But Stuart (2004, 2006) found no carryover fluency and Pollard (2009) found no carryover in high-stress conversations and minimal carryover in low-stress conversations. When two long-term, longitudinal studies find the same answer, it's not an open question.

Pages 317-318 report a 2004 survey of SpeechEasy customers finding that 80% of SpeechEasy customers were satisfied with the device. This is misleading. Of the approximately 5750 customers who tried the device, 45% bought and kept the device past the 30-day return period. These customers were then surveyed. 19% of these customers returned the surveys. Of the customers who returned the surveys, 80% were satisfied. Counting all the customers who tried the device, the survey suggests that the satisfaction rate was between 7% and 35%.

Page 318 describes a study of SpeechEasy devices (O'Donnell, 2008) without mentioning that two of the seven subjects were receiving speech therapy at the same time that they were using the SpeechEasy device, making the results attributable to either the speech therapy or the device (or both).

Three times (pages 318, 325, and 326) the authors reference their own study (Pollard, 2009) without saying what their study found. Here's what their study found. In reading aloud (low stress), the SpeechEasy devices reduced stuttering 58%; in conversations with someone the subjects knew (medium stress), the devices reduced stuttering 15%; and in conversations with strangers (high stress) the devices reduced stuttering 2%. Is it possible that the authors didn't want readers to learn how (in)effective their device is?

This advertisement, I mean chapter, is a disingenuous, self-contradictory confusion of claims touting the SpeechEasy device, using studies finding other devices to be effective and ignoring research finding the SpeechEasy device to be ineffective. ... Read more

Product Description
The author, who himself has stuttered since early childhood, brings more than 40 years of clinical expertise to this expanded and updated third edition. The book examines both contemporary and historical theories of the etiology of stuttering, cluttering, neurogenic acquired stuttering, and psychogenic acquired stuttering. Readers will find indispensable information on the symptomatology, etiology, development, evaluation, and management of these disorders, including new information on the prevention of stuttering as an impairment, a disability, a handicap, and an overlay. Because the abnormal behaviors exhibited by all children and adults who have a particular fluency disorder are not the same, this comprehensive volume also offers important information for evaluating/describing behaviors that define stuttering problems and for differentiating stuttering from normal disfluency and other fluency disorders. In addition, readers will learn how to establish therapy! goals and develop intervention strategies for achieving them. Included among many outstanding features of this fine text are guidelines for meeting the requirement of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Knowledge and Skills Acquisition (KASA) initiative and a list of organizations and Internet resources to use in networking as well as in accessing any specific, clinically relevant information about fluency disorders and help in coping with them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for a parent
Although this book was written for the healthcare provider, or student, I have found it to be helpful as a parent of a four year old that has been stuttering for over 6 months.

I have even posted the interventions in this book as a list on the fridge for our family to refer to. On this list are things such as "No simultalk" and "pause for 2 seconds prior to responding."

I am very glad with this book.As a matter of fact, a trip to the speech pathologist who charged me more, was not even as close to being as helpful as this book.Thank you Doctors Onslow and Packman!

5-0 out of 5 stars A touching story about how a young boy copes with stuttering
This is a well-written book about how a young boy, Ben copes with his stuttering, a communication disorder that is still misunderstood. At the beginning of the book, there is some brief explanation about stuttering and guidelines on how to listen to someone who is talking with a stutter. Ben's story is relatively straightforward - instead of focusing on his interactions (or lack of) in the school environment, the story is mainly set in a junkyard where Ben makes the acquaintance of Spike, a lonely guard dog who would prefer to be a pet instead. Ben needs to overcome his fear of speaking in public (for fear of being ridiculed for his stutter) in order to give Spike the life it truly deserves.

I love these series of books dealing with children's disabilities and how they cope with the challenges in day-to-day life - others in the series are :Ian's Walk: A Story About Autism,Nathan's Wish: A Story About Cerebral Palsy, and Becky the Brave: A Story About Epilepsy. I've been reading these books with my 5-year-old and hopefully she'll be able to understand and provide support to her peers in school who have disabilities. At the end of this book there is a list of resources about organizations that offer support and educational programs on stuttering. Recommended for grades K-3.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ben is a clever boy
I especially liked the illustrations in this book. The reader gets to observe from a distance the delightful play between Ben and Spike, as well as the concerned look on Mr. Wayne when contemplating why Ben is never talking. I enjoyed observing the maneuvers Ben cooked up in an attempt to avoid talking. The concern that Ben showed for the dog increased as the weeks went by, drawing the reader into this blossoming friendship.

One aspect in the text of the book was a bit different to me. Each time a comma was placed on the page it was followed with a period. I tried not to let it distract me, but I did find myself trying to copy the format when taking notes. Basically the period was on top of the comma, making them look like one character of text. I am not sure why this was done, maybe a signature style for the author.

As far as books go about teaching children on issues relating to disorders I did not feel this book did that great a job. I was impressed more by the illustrations than the neat story that had the happy ending, if only it were this easy to overcome stuttering for a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, MOVING BOOK

4-0 out of 5 stars From The Inside Flap:
Everyone who stutters, whether only slightly or so severely that oral communication is almost impossible, will find solid hope for relief in Ann Irwin's clear, easy-to-follow guide to her system of therapy. Irwin is a speech therapist working with all age levels, who received her graduate training at the University of Iowa's world-reknowned school of speech. She demonstrates in SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT OF STUTTERING that a determined stutterer can tackle his or her own problem, and by diligent effort, significantly alleviate it.

The author banishes many of the popular misconceptions about this frustrating afflicition, and describes her system of "Easy Stuttering," which relaxes the organs of speech and eliminates the agonizing involuntary repetition of sounds that both stutterer and listener find so painful.

This unique, step-by-step method of self-help for the stutterer is clearly and carefully outlined. There are chapters presenting a simplified version of her therapy for children, along with helpful advice for their parents, and reports written by many of Irwin's own patients testifying to the heartening progress they have made.

Product Description
This practical text brings together well-known writers from the UK, USA and Australia. It sets out to discuss the assessment and treatment of the young school aged child who stutters, aged approx. 7 to 12 years. A number of differing treatment approaches for this client group are presented in the one volume.

The contributors, as well as describing their treatment approaches, have considered the theoretical models on which their approaches are based and ways of measuring outcomes, an important topic in an age of evidence based practice. In order to gain a more comprehensive view of the school aged child, one chapter considers epidemiology of stuttering, whilst two chapters address the issue of concomitant problems such as other language problems and ADHD.

This text is written for students and clinicians working with children who stutter. It will also be of interest to researchers. ... Read more

This highly readable, clinically oriented book combines theory and therapy and examines all facets of stuttering, from possible etiologies through assessment to treatment. While considerable uncertainty still exists regarding the precise cause(s) of stuttering, Conture provides the reader with an even-handed coverage of fundamental knowledge, methodology, and procedures for effectively dealing with stuttering in children, teenagers, and adults. The book goes beyond a "how to" manual. Rather, Conture's clinical handbook provides both students and clinicians a source for principle-based procedures and strategies for the management of stuttering. Focusing on people who stutter as people first and people who stutter second, the material covers assessment and management of stuttering within the realities of everyday living, concomitant speech and language problems and clinical practice.
