Product Description
This is a book for parents who are worried about their children's stuttering, for teachers, doctors, friends, and relatives of those who stutter, and for stutterers themselves. It offers help, encouragement, and guidance in dealing with the problem of stuttering, which troubles more than a million persons in the United States alone.Dr. Johnson, an outstanding authority on the subject, writes in simple language so that anyone can readily understand and follow his suggestions. What he says in this book is based on many years of laboratory research and clinical observation, and his own experience as a stutterer. He tells of his early years of struggle with the handicap and his decision to devote his life to getting at the basic causes of stuttering and finding ways to prevent or alleviate it. He describes his research experiences, likening them to a detective story centered on a search for the causes of stuttering as the culprit in the case. In this account he quotes from interviews which he conducted with parents in an effort to pinpoint the exact conditions or situations in which stuttering was believed to have started. He explains how the problem develops and how it becomes a frustrating "sad-go-round." Finally, he tells what parents and others can do for children who are threatened with the handicap of stuttering and what adult stutterers can do to help themselves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great inspiration
If you stutter or want someone to utterly undestand some of the hardships of stuttering, this book will do.There are many cases with stuttering with"bad" or "good" endings. This book only tells the good endings. It entails hope to stutters that we DO have a chance in making it successfully in life and that we don't carry a long term curse of stuttering because we can do it simply by being confidence and view our rare trait as an extention of ourselves instead of a disability. Word.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book on stuttering with personal stories
I've recently been reading some books on stuttering and this is one that I came across. This book is different from most of the stuttering books that I have found. What is different about this book is that it is not a technical book about the details and mechanics of stuttering, nor is it a book that will necessarily help with treatment. This book opens with 25 stories of stutterers.Kenneth St. Louis made a decision to only tell the stories of people who have had a measure of success and acceptance in how they deal with stuttering. Many of the stories felt familiar to me because I had gone through similar things in my life or their thoughts were those that I have had in the past. What is nice about these stories are that they are from ordinary people (Bruce Willis and James Earl Jones are not included in this collection) who have to deal with stuttering in their daily lives and they let us know how they have dealt with it.Some have not had any treatment and they just accept the fact that they stutter and do not let it bother them or hold them back.Others have had to work at their stuttering. The end point these stories are trying to drive home is that while you may never be completely free from stuttering, it is possible to have success in treating stuttering.

The second portion of the book (less than half) deals with stuttering itself. It reveals what stuttering is (and what it is not).It goes through some of the more common treatments, and tells what the benefits of some of the treatments can be.This is not a book that will help you treat yourself, but it can point you in the right direction if you are looking for a place to start. There are also references in the back of the book that someone may find helpful.

This is an easy book to read, and if a person is looking for a book on stuttering, this may be a good one to look at as it includes personal testimonies in addition to the details of stuttering. It is a simple book, but it should be a good one to start with on the topic of stuttering.

Product Description

This book is a comprehensive guide to the evidence, theories, and practical issues associated with recovery from stuttering in early childhood and into adolescence. It examines evidence that stuttering is associated with a range of biological factors—such as genetics—and psychological factors—such as anxiety, and it critically assesses theoretical accounts that attempt to integrate these findings. Written so that it can be used flexibly to meet the demands of courses about stuttering, the book may be used as a text at the undergraduate or graduate level in psychology or speech-language science.

STUTTERING: A Life Bound Up in Words
Marty Jezer
New York: Basic Books, A Division of Harper-Collins Publishers, 1997

Marty Jezer's much-awaited book is on the brink of publication, if it isn't already on the stands. Marty, of course, is known throughout the stuttering community for his clear, intelligent commentary and searching questions on several discussion lists. Marty is a commited pacifist whose conciliatory tone consistently rises above flame battles which remind this writer of scenes from Star Wars. In his book he has applied his great good humor to the story of his lifelong battle with his severe stutter, and has come out the winner.

From a vantage point of middle-aged mellowness, Marty has taken a clear-eyed look at what it means to be a person who stutters and what impact his speech impediment has had on his life. He is neither vindictive nor maudlin. He makes no attempt to hide his avoidances, his denial, or his embarrassment under a cloak of heroism, and yet the real strength of his honesty shows in his unwillingness to blame any individuals or much of society for the difficulties he has experienced, difficulties which are familiar to us all. Marty is no whiner.

The book begins and ends with a description of Marty's participation in an experiment involving a drug that some hoped would alleviate stuttering. For those who have dreamed of a "fluency pill" -- a regular list topic -- these two chapters alone are worth the price of the book. But there is more, much more, to be learned in retracing Marty's path through the minefield of life with a stutter.

Marty's story underscores the oft-made assertion that the only thing that differentiates those who stutter from the general population is the fact that they stutter. Marty's loving, if somewhat competitive, family, his school, his neighborhood, his college, and his original career goals are a model of American life in the 1950's and 1960's. I would like to have seen a closer look at the effects of Marty's stuttering on the people around him, but the young Marty was a remarkably normal kid and by his own confession didn't think about that any more than he absolutely had to.

There are some wildly funny passages in the book, ones which I think anyone can identify with, whether stutterer or not. The hilarity and pathos of the chapter "An Errant Elbow or an Act of God" is as gripping in its second and third readings as it was when it first appeared in draft on The Stuttering Homepage. And there is a description of a restaurant dinner with his family that made this reader laugh out loud remembering the same kind of conversation around my own parents' table, ten adults and ten monologues only tenuously connected by a most absurd stream-of-consciousness association.

And yet, for all the good humor and, yes, love of life in this book, Marty delineates well the kinds of wrenching doubts and wandering detours that plague the fumbletongued. He holds up a lot of mirrors to others of us who have had to wrestle with the same demon - even though the demon might be smaller and more tractable in its form. It was the little things that grabbed me particularly: Marty's desire to be a funny person, his recitations alone before the mirror and in the shower, a preference in conversation to agree or to summarize rather than to bring up or change topics. The war with the telephone. The desire, indeed, a near compulsion, to write - and the freedom and joy of the written page where words fasten themselves in their ordered rows and meaning is divorced from delivery.

Marty came of age at a time of great turmoil in American society. In the eyes of at least some of us, he took a hero's stand against great injustices and terrible lies. The entire community should be proud that there were stutterers at the vanguard of the Antiwar and Civil Rights movements. Not only Marty, but his friend Paul Johnson, also a person who stutters, were instrumental in the formation of the arguments in the early years of the Protest movement. It was Johnson who introduced Marty to the activist's life and who helped him find his real voice as a journalist and formulator of policy. Their actions at that time have had a lasting effect on the shape of American society.

Marty is sure, and I will second his assertion, that the little and big prejudices which he faced as a stutterer made him especially sensitive to the big and bigger prejudices which spawned the Civil Rights movement. And from there it was only a short step to seeking a fuller liberation of all society, in the Free Speech and the Anti-War movements. That Marty could turn his intensely personal experience of prejudice as a stutterer to society's greater good should stand as a reminder to all of us that no matter how bitterly we perceive our own oppression, there is great freedom to be gained in helping others to achieve their liberation.

I could easily see _Stuttering: A Life Bound Up in Words_as a topic of organized discussion in self-help and group therapy sessions. Marty touches on almost the whole range of emotion which is likely to both inspire and trouble the person who stutters. He also delineates the process of growth, from denial through depression to something resembling integration. He makes it clear that one can honestly accept the fact of stuttering without having to accept the baggage that attaches to the label "stutterer."

I would especially recommend this book to parents and "significant others" of people who stutter. Marty's candid and unsentimental descriptions of the way his impediment has influenced and been influenced by his feelings, his aspirations, and his dreams should open passages to understanding for those who feel the effect of their loved one's impediment almost as directly as the stutterer him- or herself. This book has the potential to provide talking points for people who are inhibited by shyness and the natural reluctance to bring up a subject that may be painful to someone they are close to.

As a final note, it is interesting to compare _Stuttering: A Life Bound Up in Words_ with Wendell Johnson's little autobiography, _Because I Stutter_, which was made available online within this past week. They make a very interesting back-to-back read, for though about seventy years stands between the two books, the stories are remarkably similar. The basic message is that stuttering, though a dreadful inconvenience and even a torment, is not necessarily a permanent roadblock to a productive, fulfilling, interesting, and ultimately happy life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great therapy book
One of my undergraduate professors introduced me to this book.It is a WONDERFUL resource not only for diagnosing fluency disorders, but also for therapy.Daly gives you a great buy for your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars David Daly has a revolutionary new approach
I've really enjoyed everything that I've ever read from David Daly.I've read a few articles, a few chapters in various books that were guest-written by him, and now I've read this book.I bought this book mostly because it has a very substantive part on cluttering, and I am a clutterer.

The revolutionary approach that David Daly has to cluttering is his 33-item test of cluttering, where the SLP rates the clutterer on a scale of 0 to 3 for each item, and then comes up with a grand total. If the person scores 55 or above, then the person can be given a diagnosis of cluttering. If it is 35-55, then the diagnosis may be a hybrid of stuttering/cluttering.

He's also got a lot of other good information and resources on cluttering in this book.

This book is also the only place that I've seen where you can get actual speech samples of clutterers. This book comes with a 60-minute audiotape.Only 15 minutes is dedicated to cluttering, but there are 4 different speech samples of cluttering.Getting those samples alone is worth the price of the tape.

And, to be fair, the book is mostly about stuttering, it's like the tape, only 1/4 of it is dedicated to cluttering, but that's much more than most stuttering books dedicate to cluttering.

If you haven't heard David Daly's story, then you should read it on his website at stuttertreatment.com.The really cool thing about his story is that he was a person who stutters, and he always had the goal of being perfectly fluent. It took him years to make much progress, but he kept trying and trying, and now he's very fluent.About 50% of the tape is David Daly talking. That's really inspirational to me, because even though I haven't ever stuttered, I share his goal of being perfectly fluent. And, I figure that if he can, then I can, too. ... The authoritative representation of contributors offers the reader the most up-to-date presentation of fluency issues, with a special emphasis placed on the practical clinical implications of fluency assessment, treatment, and evolving theories of the disorder.

Product Description
This book is the result of a "State-of-the-Art-Conference" held at the University of Georgia dedicated to the evidence-based treatment of stuttering. An international group of prominent fluency researchers and clinicians were invited to present and discuss current data and issues related to the treatment of stuttering. The topic was defined to include evidence about stuttering, evidence about stuttering treatment, and discussions of how that evidence should guide the continuing research and practice. The explicit link between empirical evidence and suggestions for clinical practice is the goal of the book.

The book begins by addressing the notion of "evidence-based practice" and considers its implications for stuttering treatment. Part II presents the intersection of the nature of stuttering; the theories of stuttering; and the implications of nature, theory, and other knowledge for stuttering treatment decisions. Part III provides two of the many measurement issues facing stuttering treatment followed by Part IV, which is devoted to the quality of treatment research evidence, for specific treatments and in terms of some more general methodological and professional issues. The final part summarizes the clinical recommendations made throughout the book and discusses evidence-based, outcomes-focused clinical decisions for stuttering.

These chapters are intended to provide "state-of-the-art" information to researchers, clinicians, and students who are interested in developing, identifying, or using the best possible evidence-based treatments for stuttering.

Product Description
Gary Lexington, a dental implant repairman, lives his life in a blazingly dull, techno-salve of a future, increasingly aware that he wants no part of it.When he learns that his suicide can grant him a kind of immortality by transferring his genetic imprint onto a new character in the wildly popular cartoon, ALL THINGS SOLOMON, he decides to end it all for a stab at eternal life, unaware that in doing so, he will alter the shape of mankind forever…

Mark Wheaton is a screenwriter (FRIDAY THE 13TH, THE MESSENGERS), graphic novelist (THE CLEANERS) and author of the bestselling straight-to-Kindle stories LAST TUESDAY, BONES, SUNDAY BILLY SUNDAY: A MEMOIR and NIGHT OF THE SCORPIONS, soon to be available in a print anthology, FOUR NAILS IN THE COFFIN.

STUTTERING HUNTER also includes the short story, GARE DU NORD originally published on PopcornFiction.com.

Advance praise for FOUR NAILS IN THE COFFIN:

“Mark Wheaton is a T4000 horror writer. He brings a millennial aesthetic, a screenwriter’s eye and ear, and an imagination as wide, sun-seared, and American as Route 66 to this quartet of novellas. This is muscular, original fiction that marks the debut of an exciting new voice in the speculative/dark fantasy genre.” - Michael Rowe, editor of the QUEER FEAR anthology series and co-author of TRIPTYCH OF TERROR

"Wheaton's writing is haunting.Days, weeks, even months later, you will find your mind returning to his worlds.Stephen King is no longer my only addiction." - Todd Farmer, screenwriter, graphic novelist, MY BLOODY VALENTINE IN 3-D, ALIEN PIG FARM, forthcoming DRIVE ANGRY

"His tales are visceral, intellectual, and often grisly, but Wheaton never forgets that touch of humanity and wry humor which allows true horror to cut that much deeper to the bone." - Kenneth Plume, author, THERE'S A ZOMBIE IN MY TREEHOUSE

"Mark Wheaton is a magician. He misdirects you with accessibility while performing tricks of genius.Don't try to figure out how he does it - just enjoy the show.FOUR NAILS IN THE COFFIN is a shotgun blast to the brain. In a good way." - Gary Dauberman, screenwriter, SWAMP DEVIL, BLOOD MONKEY

"Mark Wheaton's collection of novellas shows off a sharp sense of the uncanny. Here is a storyteller who can take us into the weirdest of scenarios through the eyes of characters who are, however offbeat, always believable. One part horror, one part suspense, NAILS is a fully engaging and out of the ordinary reading experience." - Shara Kay, co-producer, MOTHER'S DAY, VERONIKA DECIDES TO DIE ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the strangest stories I've read
As I have been slowly reading all of Smilin' Jack Ruby's Kindle stories I keep finding things in common between them until "Stuttering Hunter."When I was halfway through it I was ready to give it three stars and write that it was the weakest one, but then it takes a turn and you understand what he is going for. It's funny but tragic, science fiction but a romance, dark as night but uplifting and meaningful. It has really stayed with me so that is another big point in it's favor.I know he is a screenwriter and I think this is the one that should be made into a movie.Four and a half stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars While Suicide may be Painless, the Changes it brings on may not be
Dear SJR,

Night of the Scorpions felt like a novelization of a bad Syfy Channel movie. You got my money, I was kind or too annoyed and didn't review it, but the only good thing was the ending with the giant ants. Stuttering Hunter on the other hand is fantastic. It's short, but a funny story that's as much a terrific piece of science fiction as a story about the nature of comedy and fitting in. Stick to this.

The story is about a guy who, when he decides to commit suicide, finds out that everybody's actions are being recorded by a dental implant and he's given an alternative to have an imprint of his life's learned behaviors used to create a new cartoon character that will be introduced into an interactive animated show that everybody watches. He's not supposed to feel anything except dead, but then he wakes up in the cartoon universe and has free will when all the other characters are controlled by the will of the audience. The guy is a loser and literally can't tell a joke to save his life so the other characters all kill him. He regenerates again and again only to meet the same fate and it just gets worse. Then, the real world finds out what's happening in the cartoon world and it gets worse.

It has taken me almost ten minutes to write that paragraph as trying to figure out the plot is making my head explode. It's a great story. If I had read this in an anthology of the year's great science fiction short stories, I would've thought the editor did his job.

Additionally, I read Gare du Nord before and skimmed it this time. It's a really good story that moves quick and would make a great movie. I was expecting more of a twist at the end, but it's a ballsy way to go.

Five Stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking story
I loved this one. It's sad, poignant, beautiful, all these things. The story is about a man named Gary who seems like a real weird guy who imagines things and doesn't fit in and after his dad dies, he decides to kill himself. This company that's monitoring his mental condition through a dental implant contacts him and says that if they can take a scan of his brain to use for a cartoon character, they will kill him humanely, so he says yes and they do. That's when the story really starts.

I don't know what to say except that I cried at the end and it was very moving. This one is so different than the others as it is romantic and funny, but also very strange and about the physics of a cartoon universe that Gary gets trapped in. You have to really think about what's going on as there are a lot of hiddn points to how it all works, but I really enjoyed this one more than any of the others so far.

The cover is not by Rahsan Ekedal this time, but someone else and it's not really a scene from the story, but kind of what it's about. Looking at it and knowing the ending is really interesting. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Reference Work, Not a Textbook
The good: This book is incredibly comprehensive when it comes to stuttering theory and research. Look up anything at all about stuttering and you'll find at least two references, if not ten. It also does a good job of incorporating historical perspectives and research from several disciplines.

The bad: The book reads like an encyclopedia -- maybe even like a dictionary. If this is your textbook for your fluency class, set aside a LOT of time for reading it. There is hardly any information on how to treat disfluency; standardized treatment programs are described in theoretical terms and outlined, but that's it. You could read the book cover to cover and still not know what some of the basic techniques of stuttering treatment actually look like.

So it's not a useful book for treatment, but it's a good "library" title on disfluency for a student or professional. I would not recommend it for clients or interested non-professionals -- it's too dry and theoretical, and assumes a good amount of background knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handbook on Stuttering Review
I needed this book for a class. Although it is quite dense, it is overall a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best reference book in stuttering!
Ifirst used one of Bloodstein's earlier versions of the Handbook when I tookmy first stuttering class in 1983, that was a long time ago, but then, like today there is nobody better! When I first heard that a new version was coming out I was duly excited but my excitement was tempered when I found there was to be a co-author, Nan Bernstein Ratner. What would become of "our" beloved Handbook with this intruder participating?Much to my surprise, the Handbook is more readable and user-friendly while maintaining its integrity as one of the most reliable sources of information on stuttering. We are all-grateful for this book and know that all stuttering books are compared to Bloodstein's Handbook.

This book is for the serious student of stuttering and may be best used in conjunction with other textbooks for the beginning student or clinician. However one uses it, you will be well served by Handbook of Stuttering.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Stuttering Information
This should be titled "Everything you wanted to know about stuttering but were afraid to ask." I own every edition of this book, going back to when it was a little pamphlet published by Chicago Easter Seals. Each edition has gotten better and this most recent one, obviously, is the best. There is no more comprehensive review of stuttering research available anywhere. A must-have for anyone who is seriously interested in the disorder of stuttering.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE authoritative resource for information about stuttering
Everything you want to know about the history of research, theory, and treatment of stuttering is contained in this book. I have used it (and its predecessors) as textbooks in my course, as a reference in my own research, and as a resource just about any time somebody asks me "has anybody ever studied...?" If it's been written about, it's in the Handbook. This is truly an indispensable text and it should be on the shelf of every speech-language pathologist who evaluates or treats individuals who stutter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuttering
Agreement about stuttering therapy has been a major objective of this Foundation and this book represents progress toward that objective.

In recent years most disagreement has boiled down to a preference for one of two major approaches.

Some clinicians have preferred to help stutterers learn not to avoid stuttering, but to approach it and to learn to stutter in simpler and easier ways.

Other clinicians have perferred to teach stutterers to speak in a fluent pattern that can be gradually shaped to normal sounding speech in all situations.

The authors of this book... show how it is possible and desirable to integrate and coordinate these two most commonly used therapy approaches in order to retain the advantages of both methods so as to obtain even more satisfactory results.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Read
Couldn't put it down.Enjoyed the book very much. The start was slow but slowly brought you into the story and nade it hard to put down just waiting to see what would happen next.Aside from the socialistic overtures the book was refreshing, funny and touching.I'm waiting for the next adventure to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars good first book
I liked this enough that I bought a second copy for one of my sons.Good first book; hope he writes more.He did not quite tie up all the loose ends in the story, though.Still, I look forward to reading more from this author. The editing does need some work, as there are more than a few typos throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantasy that remembers fun...
This book was recommended to me by a friend; I love some fantasy, but consider a lot of the modern stuff overwhelming and too complex. This was a refreshing breath of fresh wind. It's hilarious. It's fantasy that remembers how to be fun. The first time I read it, I got two chapters in and couldn't put it down. I finished it in about two days, juggling church and drama practices and college classes.

I'm now reading it out loud to my six siblings, all of whom yell for more if I even pause to take a breath. They're enjoying it just as much as I did, if not always for the same reasons. Well-worth the money and the time-- it's a rousing adventure that should stir any fantasy- or hope-loving heart to cheer the characters on, laugh with (or at) them, and sigh with relief when they escape danger. Have fun. Fantasy deserves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Page-Turner
On someone's recommendation I started this book hesitantly because usually goblins & wizards don't interest me. But once I got past the first couple of chapters I couldn't stop. The book is a real "page-turner" & I really wanted to know how the main character gets out of "this one". They were so well drawn the remembrance of them stayed with me for days after I finished it. This is light reading for adults (but fun)and suitable for older children. The monsters are too scary for the younger ones. Aside from an annoying sprinkling of typos, well worth your time. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Meh... not terrible, but not good.
I wouldn't call this a bad book so much as a problematic one. There is useful information, but it is provided less asan objective overview of the topic than as a subjective "how I see things" listing. One example - the only thereputic approach presented is that favored by the author. The intended audience for this book - given in the subtitle - is a broad one with differing needs, and each group is short-changed in turn. As a stutterer with in interest in understanding my condition, the lack of citations and footnotes is a very serious lapse - one that professional therapists would surely share. Regarding style - some may find the folksy story-telling approach the frequently show up engaging. I found it a waste of ink and found myself constantly scanning over entire pages looking for the "meat" of the section. A good editor could cut the content by 50# with no loss of information.

A more accurate title would have been "A summary of my opinions on stuttering, told in amusing anecdotes and long-winded analogies." If you can find it at the library, check it out. I did, and I'd be angry if I had paid more than a few dollars for it.
