Product Description
Stuttering Therapy: Rationale and Procedures provides students and professionals explicit descriptions of therapy procedures and their necessary rationale based on research and clinical experience. This comprehensive text begins with basic background information about speech fluency and the nature of stuttering. It is unique among texts on stuttering therapy in that it includes a chapter providing analyses of eight areas of research, followed immediately by the implications of these findings for evaluation and treatment. Five chapters on assessment and treatment of all age groups carry out a main theme of relating research knowledge to clinical procedures. A final chapter focuses on a reframing of the processes of counseling and stuttering therapy.Drawing on the authors' broad experience working together over a thirty-year period, evaluation is described with reference to the factors contributing to or maintaining a problem, resulting in individual subject profiles. Three separate chapters cover early intervention during preschool years, treatment of school-age children, and therapy for teenagers and adults. This text features the extensive description of practical procedures, utilizing examples and case studies. The strengthening of self-concept and raising the level of self-esteem are viewed as the cornerstone of all behavioral, cognitive, and affective change. ... Read more

Product Description
Like physiotherapy, stuttering therapy is often based on the notion that Òpractice makes perfect.ÓIt is viewed by many practitioners as a purely physical disorder that can be improved by a standard regimen of treatment. But the fact is that attaining fluency is not the same as physiotherapy. There are many emotional barriers to successful fluency which must be explored.Based upon the authorÕs 24 years of professional experience, SchwartzÕs book presents a comprehensive stuttering therapy program in an easy-to-understand fashion. This is an innovative video/book package that allows readers to actually view the techniques discussed in the book on videotape. The skills for achieving fluency are broken down into a number of easy to follow components which are then demonstrated and discussed on the video. The emphasis is not only on speech skills, but also on the emotional perspectives associated with stuttering. To that end, there is an entire chapter devoted to counseling, and examples throughout every chapter that deal with speech and emotional development.Speech pathologists, audiologists, educators, counselors, teachers, parents, and people with stuttering problems. 4-0 out of 5 stars Ok but expensive
The video that comes with the book is excellent. Each example is numerically cued on the screen so that you can look up anything noted in the book and see an example of what is being described in the text on the videotape. This was an excellent way to present the video material. You can use the video this way to have a very informative afternoon learning about this disorder. The book is so-so. I think that Schwartz (not to be confused with Martin Schwartz, the airflow therapist) is wrong on more than a few points. By now, however, I know that no one stuttering book can serve as a primer for therapists. You need to read a great deal, be always willing to individualize your treatment for each client's needs, and be open and flexible rather than committed to any one theory or treatment method. If you are a therapist working with fluency clients, add this to your library. If you are a therapist trying to learn more about fluency, the tape and text can serve as an at-home workshop for you. If you are a stutterer seeking materials for self-therapy, this may be too academic and much too technical for you. ... Read more

Product Description
Drs. Kalinowski and Saltuklaroglu present an intriguing new look at understanding and managing stuttering, based on recent discoveries in neuroscience They begin with a thorough history of the research and treatment of the condition before going on to introduce an alternative model of the nature and treatment of stuttering, based on 12 years of research and a lifetime of experience. They propose that visible stuttering manifestations are actually a solution to a central and involuntary problem, acting as a compensatory mechanism for a central involuntary block, rather than a problem in themselves, and suggest exploring natural recovery mechanisms as integral to treatment. While the authors point to advances in science as ultimately being the key to uncovering the cause and cure of the condition, they focus on management with a goal of effective and efficient communication for the clients. ... Customer Reviews (1)

4-0 out of 5 stars a reference work
The front cover of this book describes itself as the "most complete book about stuttering", and in one sense that is a correct assessment.Thomas Kehoe has pulled together an enormous amount of research about stuttering and put it into a 300 page book. This is the book's greatest strength, but it can also be a weakness. The reader should know what he is reading this book for and what he hopes to get out of it so he knows what to expect.

The book is broken up into three sections: Science, Therapy, and Practice, and the focus of each section is how each relates to stuttering and stuttering therapy. The book follows the idea of "the more you know, the better off you are" and with that in mind Thomas Kehoe collects all the research he can find about stuttering, breaks it out into organized sections and drops it all in the book.Kehoe does not draw conclusions from any of the research (though he does say what worked for him and what didn't).Kehoe takes a subject and shows all of the research on it, even if one bit of research disputes what is said by another. This is good because we can see how there are no pat answers in regards to stuttering and we need to figure out what will work best for each individual stutterer, but it also becomes frustrating because of the sheer volume of information contained in this book without a conclusion being drawn. The reader is left to fend for himself to try to figure out what he wants to do and how to go about it.

The greatest benefit of this book, I believe, is as a reference work.Kehoe references many other books on stuttering as well as internet sites and places to go to work through stuttering. There is a value in the book, but please do not go into this book expecting a direct answer on how to work on your stuttering. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
There have been many theories about the cause of stuttering and many misconceptions exist. Currently, it is believed that a number of factors play a role in the development and maintenance of stuttering. These factors can be grouped and classified as constitutional, environmental, and communication factors. There is some evidence that stuttering is genetic; it does run in some families. There is also evidence that stuttering is due to a disorder in the timing of movements of speech muscles, a defect in auditory feedback, and a lack of cerebral dominance for language functions. Stuttering is not a symptom of emotional or mental problems, although it may become a source of stress and cause emotional difficulties.

Foundations of Stuttering presents a new perspective on stuttering. A key aim of the book is to establish a rational and scientifically defensible foundation for the study and management of the stuttering disorder, based on the fact that stuttering is manifestly a disorder of speech. Central to this objective is the interrelation of findings from the fields of stuttering, psychology, psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics that support the analysis of stuttering as an intrinsic anomaly of speech production. The book presents critical analysis of much of the literature in the field to present a fully objective, scientifically oriented study of the disorder.
Dr Wingate has made significant contributions in the area of fluency disorders. In 1969 and 1970, publication of articles that led to his Vocalization Hypothesis stimulated a great deal of research in the area of stuttering which underlies current theory approaches.

Key Features
* Offers a new departure in understanding stuttering and a rational, non-theoretical analysis of the disorder
* Identifies a major principle central to the nature and management of stuttering
* Represents the culmination of forty years of study, research and clinical experience ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful stuff
If you know anything about the history of stuttering research, you know just how bad things have been. During the twentieth century, every fad was adopted, from psychoanalytic theory to each new learning theory in it's turn. Wingate gives his own ideas on the nature of stuttering, while slicing and dicing his co-workers without a hint of mercy. This is a rare book in the academic/scientific world, as Wingate does not trade in professional courtesy, and delivers some real bombs on the doorsteps on his professional colleagues. In fact, the book could be subtitled The Crimes of Wendell Johnson. Wingate does overdue it, but only in the sense of rhetorical overkill. A good editor could have cut down on some of the redundant jibes, and the point would have been satisfactorily made.

I was predisposed to like this book. Wingate had a sharp, critical mind, and he cuts the BS and gets to the heart of the matter. He is sharply critical of the conjecture and sloppy thinking so often found in stuttering research, and demands rigor where he finds none. The author attacks the use of the words fluency and dis/dysfluency with vigor - and makes great sense to me (there's a whole story here that I had never thought of). If you nod when you read a quote from Wendell Johnson, you need to read this book. If your background is in psychology or learning theory, I highly recommend this book as an alternate view of stuttering.

I gave the book five stars, but that's like giving it an "A" grade - not necessarily perfect. Wingate is clear about his own beliefs throughout his criticism of others, but in the end, his summary of his own understanding of stuttering really isn't summed up particularly well. I can imagine him in his office thinking "Before I die, I'll show the world how much damage that ba$tard Johnson did!" While he certainly succeeded in at least the effort, he leaves himself open to the critical "So if you know so much..." question. He really didn't sew up the end of the book well enough.

I don't work or teach in the field, but if I did, this would absolutely be on the reading list. It's the kind of book that would pi$$ off a lot of professionals in the field, and that's a good thing - they need it. ... Read more

Product Description
The goal of this book is to call attention to a systematic scientific approach to studying and treating stuttering via the strategies of operant conditioning, learning theory, and single-subject research design. Another purpose is to present the data collected and/or published over the past 30 years in one place for evaluation and comparison. This new edition starts with a brief introductory chapter including the basic principles of operant analysis. Chapter 2 covers the mechanics of charting, counting, and computing stuttering and speaking rates. Chapter 3 describes evaluation with both new data and forms. Chapter 4 is on programming, and Chapter 5 highlights the two present major establishment programs, Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF)-Prolongation and Gradual Increase in Length and Complexity of Utterance (GILCU). Chapter 6 discusses transfer and maintenance programs and follow-up, while Chapter 7 presents long-term individual client performances in several programs. Chapter 8 covers the preschool stuttering child, and Chapter 9 describes efforts at and results of dissemination through training. Chapter 10 is a summary of efficacy data published over recent years, and Chapter 11 provides conclusions, discussion of problems, and suggested directions for future clinical research. Because it uniquely combines behavior modification, remediation of a well-known but perplexing disorder, and the most up-to-date clinical research, this outstanding new edition will serve as a great resource to anyone involved in the treatment of speech disorders. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars technical information for the physician
This was a very academic book on stuttering. It was written primarily for physicians, though people who stutter (and their friends/family) may find some value in the book.It describes (in technical detail) and defines stuttering and talks about how stuttering happens. It does not answer the question of why, which is a question that nobody has an answer for, but it does reveal the mechanics of how stuttering occurs. The authors reveal that stuttering is partially genetic, but not always. The book shows how complex a behavior stuttering is.

The book does get into the treatment of stuttering, both for children and adults. The one thing I would like to note about this is that it seems like the sections on treatment is geared more to speech therapists rather than a patient. It gives an idea of how a physician should treat stuttering, but not the actual techniques used. This book is more of a reference than a "self-therapy" book, so if you are thinking about getting this book, please understand what kind of book it is.It is highly technical and detailed for the physician, and only in short sections did I find value in it as a stutterer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars an interesting history of stuttering and its treatment
This book is a fairly interesting history of stuttering.Benson Bobrick takes a look at historical figures who have stuttered, a list which includes Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Moses, and the Greek speaker Demosthenes.Knotted Tongues is a look at how stuttering was perceived throughout history and how stuttering has been treated.

The part of this book that I found the most fascinating was the time it spent examining how stuttering was treated over time. What I didn't expect was how cringe-inducing this would be.There were some methods that involved the chewing of various substances, as well as other that involved speaking with a mouth full of pebbles. The cringe-worthy methods involved scalding the tongue, and burning around the throat and head (the reasons had to do with what these doctors thought about the causes of stuttering). As painful as these sound, the most brutal method of treatment was a surgery that cuts part of the tongue away.Mind you, this was done before anesthetics. There is a fairly graphic description of this surgery in the book.

Knotted Tongues is not a book about how to best treat stuttering, nor does it go into detail about the variety of modern (and much more humane) treatments available today. This is a history of stuttering. It is easily readable, and does not go into the level of technical detail that you would find in Starkweather's "Stuttering".While someone who stutters may have more interest in this book, I think that anyone would find this interesting, if only to see the various methods of treatment and how stutterers have been viewed throughout history.Good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A difficult, but highly recommended read:
If you are a stutterer, or you have an interest in speech pathology and desire to learn more about stuttering, this book is an interesting place to start. Now, granted, it is not an easy read for the layperson, and it certainly does not discuss issues of indivudal stuttering concepts, but if you want a history, if you want to read about different strategies welcomed in the past, and if you want to learn a little about those famous people who have endured through many uncomfortable situations of "tongue-tied-ness," grab a copy of this book!

Keep in mind though, that if you're looking to learn about the causes and therapies and in-depth experiences with stuttering, this book will not fulfill that venue. This is a book on history and the interesting and absurd methods of "curing" the stutter that were utilized. At any rate, if you are a stutterer and you want to see that you're not alone, please pick up a copy of this book. :o)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
It seems to be an axiom in my field of speech pathology that most speech/language therapists are able to deal with the mechanics of speech and language well enough but can't communicate effectively. Most speakers and writers in the field are unbearable communicators who wouldn't recognize an interesting sentence (rather than a nerve deadening dose of academic jargon) if it leapt up and bit them on their private parts (I would like to use a more colorful term but this is a family site).
Thankfully, Bobrick knows how to write quite well. This is a fascinating (and highly readable) survey of stuttering in history. It should be on the shelf of everyone who works with stutterers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Bobrick, a stutterer himself, writes a fascinating historical overview of both the famous stutterers in history (Greek orator Demosthenes, Winston Churchill, Nai Bevan) and reviews the "cures" on offer through the ages. I am similarly afflicted and found the book fascinating. My good friend Jon bought it for me after a low point in my life when I did jury service. My oath took the best part of 25 minutes and my fellow jurors elected me foreman. The verdict was real edge-of-your-seat stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical look at stuttering
This book looks at the history of stuttering and its treatment from long ago to the present. As someone who stuttering I appreciated the author's thoroughness in researching the treatment processes used in the past and comparing them to the present. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who has an interest in fluency.

Thank you, Dr. Maguire, for writing such a telling story of your life and experiences as a medical doctor who also stutters. Your amazing, relentless pursuit and journey to discover what stuttering is and how to assist not only yourself but countless others with your clinic and research has amazed me. Your story has the insight and compassion of the physician that you are as well as the person who grew up with a difference in his speech. How you managed to become easy with your speech also gives hope and inspiration to all who work and/or live with the condition called "stuttering". Thank you for your continued dedication to the field of fluency and for providing this research and practice to help us all understand how this condition can affect the lives of so many. The evidence from your studies will guide us in our ability to provide differential diagnosis, prognosis, and counseling. Kathleen Lake, M.S., CCC-SLP

Product Description
Although there is now a large body of research into the nature and treatment of stuttering, little is understood about its underlying mechanisms. As a result until now there has been no comprehensive review of the numerous theories and models that have been proposed to explain stuttering.

Theoretical Issues in Stuttering provides a comprehensive account of the contribution of theory to understanding and managing stuttering. It covers an impressive range of topics including a description of both past and current theories of stuttering, placing each within the relevant historical context. In addition, the authors evaluate the explanatory power of such models and provide a detailed exploration of the implications of these models for the practitioner.

Theoretical Issues in Stuttering aims to fill a gap in the literature on the subject of stuttering theory and to act as an invaluable resource for speech-language pathologists, lecturers and advanced students of speech and language pathology. ... Read more
