Product Description
In Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse, leading authorities on substance abuse treatment techniques review and illustrate the most common interventions for opioid-related and alcohol-related substance abuse disorders, as well as crucial methodologies for testing and patient placement. Methods reviewed include self-help fellowships such as Alcoholics Anonymous, cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic treatments, motivational enhancement, group and family therapy, contingency management, and the multimodal approach called Network Therapy, which recruits the support of friends and family to prompt abstinence and prevent relapse. Each chapter includes vivid case studies to illustrate the approach described, as well as a review of the key clinical concepts and a list of essential readings.Adapting a new, clinically focused manual from their popular American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Substance Abuse Treatment, now in its fourth edition, Dr. Galanter and Dr. Kleber have designed Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Substance Abuse to be of practical application to both experienced clinicians and those new to the field. The accompanying DVD demonstrates Network Therapy in practice and includes enlightening commentary on key issues that are relevant across the many modalities of substance abuse treatment discussed in the book. ... Product Description
This manual presents the first empirically studied, integrative treatment approach developed specifically for PTSD and substance abuse. For persons with this prevalent and difficult-to-treat dual diagnosis, the most urgent clinical need is to establish safety--to work toward discontinuing substance use, letting go of dangerous relationships, and gaining control over such extreme symptoms as dissociation and self-harm. The manual is divided into 25 specific units or topics, addressing a range of different cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal domains. Each topic provides highly practical tools and techniques to engage patients in treatment; teach "safe coping skills" that apply to both disorders; and restore ideals that have been lost, including respect, care, protection, and healing. Structured yet flexible, topics can be conducted in any order and in a range of different formats and settings. The volume is designed for maximum ease of use with a large format, lay-flat binding, and helpful reproducible therapist sheets and handouts.

2-0 out of 5 stars For women
I am taking this program at a local hospital. The program is all women and they seem to love this information. They seem to be taking to it well. But, I can not recommend it for men, nor do I think the information was meant to pertain to men. It is hard for a man to relate to the difficulties of women, and this program can come across as emasculating to your average guy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Counseling help, drug addiction treatment
This book is a required text for a class on substance abuse. It has a lot of information for idealized situations that may not work in the "real world" of counseling. Ideally the family would all come in to work together for treatment, however, most counselors know that it hardly ever happens. My disappointment with this book is due to the way it cannot be done in a community counseling center environment. I prefer the ASAM materials that are provided through government substance abuse resources. I guess as a textbook, it is the same as any other, but for me, I would not read it if it had not been required. It uses theory, but little practical helps. How do you get the family members to come in for treatment since substance abuse usually alienates them? ... Read more

The proven "social norms" approach outlined in this book identifies young people's dramatic misperceptions about their peer norms and promotes accurate public reporting of actual positive norms that exist in all student populations. Product Description
Kyle Keegan was like many teenagers: eager to fit in at school, he experimented with alcohol and drugs. Soon, his abuse of these substances surpassed experimentation and became a ruthless addiction to heroin that nearly destroyed his life.

Now in recovery, Keegan tells his remarkable story in Chasing the High. Starting with the early days of alcohol and drug use, Keegan charts his decline into crime and homelessness as his need for heroin surpassed all thoughts of family and friends, of right and wrong. He then goes on to use these experiences to offer guidance and practical advice to other young people who may be struggling with substance abuse. In straightforward, easy-to-understand language and along with the psychiatric expertise of Howard Moss, MD, Keegan discusses what is known about the neurobiology of addiction in young people, how to seek treatment, and how to get the most out of professional help.He also covers such topics as therapies which are used to combat addiction, how to talk to families and friends about substance abuse, and how to navigate risky situations. Both an absorbing memoir and a useful resource for young people.

Part of the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series of books written specifically for teens and young adults, Chasing the High offers hope to young people who are struggling with substance abuse, helping them to overcome its challenges and to go on to lead healthy, productive lives. ...
