Product Description

Addiction to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs is one of the major public health issues of our time. In the United States, one in five deaths is the result of addictive drug use. This innovative book critically examines drug addiction treatment in the United States. It explores specific challenges (scientific, medical, social, and legal) to reaching the goal that treatment for drug addiction should be as accessible as treatments for diseases of the heart, liver, and lungs which often result from the use of addictive drugs. These essays, written by leaders in addiction science, medicine, and health policy, present diverse and often opposing points of view to foster thought and discussion.

The book consists of three parts. Part I examines the emerging science and theories that underlie the development of specific models for treating addiction to illicit opioids and stimulants, alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drugs. Part II explores the complications raised by the diversity of those with addictions, ranging from pregnant women who use intravenous drugs, young men who abuse methamphetamines, youths who smoke cigarettes, and adults who abuse alcohol to those who smoke marijuana or abuse prescription drugs. Part III provides a detailed analysis of health care, social, and policy issues that challenge our views about addiction and its treatment. It addresses controversial topics such as whether addiction should be considered a disease or a behavior, whether addiction should be handled as a criminal offense or treated as a public health problem, and whether stigmatizing addiction is helpful or not. Throughout the book, compelling examples of addiction art explore the human side of addiction through the lens of visual artists' stunning insights into addiction and recovery.

Addiction Treatment provides a solid foundation for understanding addiction as a treatable illness and for establishing a framework for effective treatment in the twenty-first century.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book covered much ground for no bigger than it is. The chapters are relatively short, but good summaries. A variety of perspectives are contained, and I particularly liked the artwork of addicts in recovery. The introduction by C. Everett Koop is worth the purchase price alone.

Product Description
Recent—and exciting—discoveries of the neuropharmacology and psychopharmacology of addictive disorders make the Clinical Manual of Addiction Psychopharmacology an essential guide to our understanding of this exceptionally challenging field.

Written with a therapeutic focus as a clinical guide for the use of pharmacotherapy in patients with substance use disorders, the Clinical Manual of Addiction Psychopharmacology offers

  • In-depth background discussion on each major class of drug and its treatment.
  • Meticulously detailed reviews of the pharmacology of addictive drugs and the medications used to treat dependence on these addictive drugs.
  • The latest work of 24 recognized experts from both the United States and abroad—all contributors to the empirical literature covered here.
  • Nine chapters, highlighted by informative illustrations, covering all of the major classes of substances that are clinically important in relation to addiction: alcohol, opioids, sedative-hypnotics, cannabis, cocaine and psychostimulants, hallucinogens and phencyclidine, club drugs (gamma-hydroxybutyrate, ecstasy, and ketamine), inhalants, and tobacco.
  • A discussion of psychosocial treatments combined with pharmacotherapy for alcohol, cocaine, and opioid use disorders. The goal of this approach is to optimize outcomes by understanding how patient characteristics, such as substance use disorder typology, severity, family history, and comorbid psychopathology, may interact with psychosocial and pharmacological treatment.

Each chapter covers three primary aspects of a major drug group: an overview of the clinical pharmacology of the abused substance, phenomenology or pharmacological treatment or both of the abstinence syndrome, and pharmacological treatment for relapse prevention.

For disorders in which no clear pharmacotherapy has proven effective (e.g., cocaine dependence), or for disorders in which no clear abstinence syndrome has been established (e.g., marijuana dependence), authors review the basic pharmacology of the drug and the phenomenology of withdrawal to enable clinicians to evaluate new clinical research in medications development for those disorders.

An essential guide for clinical and social work, the Clinical Manual of Addiction Psychopharmacology will find a wide audience among all prescribing clinicians, psychiatric educators and their students, and other mental health practitioners. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diagnosis AND how to change behavior of problem children
I am a CASA (court appointed special advocate) and just came from a lecture by Dr. Ira Chasnoff. He is completely convincing and wonderfully qualified on this subject.

He has run fascinating experiments and seems to have opened a completely new area of diagnosis for problem children.By running a diagnostic and treatment center for problem children, he can offer courses for people who deal with problem children or who are interested in starting a community program to deal with the growing problem. You might check into this...

But, after diagnosis, what can be done to help the child?Dr. Chasnoff describes treatment and can prove its effectiveness. Elsewhere, these children are usually drugged and often over-drugged, but without solving their behavioral problems. He has designed a series of solutions to help the child cope with actual structural brain dificiencies (caused by pre-natal drug use).

Of course, he has found that pre-natal drug use (including alcohol) affect behavior -- but, oddly, he has found that mothers who use drugs AFTER birth continue to affect the child's IQ!Thus treating the child without treating the mother can be futile (probably a reason why Head Start's good results do not last -- the parents must be treated too).

Highly recommended. It may save a life.If you have a problem child, consider getting diagnosis and treatment with Dr. Chasnoff.Get involved with bringing this new information into use within your community! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Small, Too Cheap
Information in book is very valuable. Unfortunetaly the print is so small you have to use a magnifying glass to read it at all. The publisher should be ashamed at this attempt to save money at the expense of usefulness. I rated this book as a one star for this reason. I think this is enough, we must demand that book publishers publixh books that are readable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Substance Abuse guidebook available...
This 261 page paperback is a must for anyone in the field of substance abuse or mental health. The book is small enough to conveniently carry around every day. It is not a textbook as the author notes. However, it contains 3 sections including General Principles of Substance Use Disorders, Substance Review (which covers every drug that any counselor will need to know about, including "club drugs", nicotine, etc.), and Substance Use Treatment. There are a number of appendices which include copies of screening examinations such as the CAGE, AUDIT, MAST, CIWA-Ar, CINA. There are also lists of published resources, certification boards, and useful websites.

Throughout this highly readable book there are very helpful clinical vignettes, as well as Key Points and Notes made by the author which enhance one's understanding of the topic being discussed. There are charts and graphs, lists of which questions to ask, etc.

As a clinician in a very busy Level One Trauma Center I have found this book to be invaluable. I know of none better, and if any readers do please enlighten me/us as we are always looking for helpful books such as these. Dr Gitlow has done a remarkable job of pullling together much information in a format that is quite user friendly, and reasonably priced as well. I give this guide my highest endorsement and will certainly continue to utilize it almost daily while awaiting a second addition when the time is right to release a new edition...

4-0 out of 5 stars A book for all disciplines
This amazing little handbook is the perfect quick reference for nurses, physicians, and drug abuse counselors. Thank you, Dr. Gitlow.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force!!!!!!
What a great book! Finally, a readable, accurate guide--perfect for any medical clinician, his/her patients or the lay public. Dr. Gitlow uses interesting clinical vignettes to illustrate issues that are traditionally very tough to understand. Unlike other addiction/substance abuse books, this book is actually well written and comprehensible!! Whether used as a reference guide or as a textbook, it will serve as a standard in the industry for years to come. No interested party should be without a copy!! Thanks Dr. Gitlow! ... Read more

Product Description
Both pain and addiction are tremendous public health problems. Practitioners of every stripe say that they learned precious little about pain or addiction in their training and readily admit that instruction on the interface of pain and addiction is nonexistent. The recent problem of prescription drug abuse has only served to highlight the fact that these two worlds need unificationthose who treat pain must be informed about the risks of controlled substances and those who treat addiction need to better and more fully understand their benefits. Nowhere is the pooled knowledge of pain management and addiction medicine brought together to allow for a greater appreciation of the risks of addiction when treating people with pain and the pain problems of those with chemical dependency. This major new volume brings this vast knowledge base together, presenting an array of perspectives by the foremost thought leaders at the interface of pain and chemical dependency, and is the most comprehensive resource on the subject to date.

There have been an increasing number of seminars devoted to this topic and a new society, The International Society on Pain and Chemical Dependency, has recently been formed, and this volume is destined to become the classic text on this multidisciplinary subject. It will appeal to anesthesiologists, neurologists, rehab physicians, palliative care staff, pain center physicians, and psychologists. ... Read more

Product Description
The Globalisation of Addiction presents a radical rethink about the nature of addiction. Scientific medicine has failed when it comes to addiction. There are no reliable methods to cure it, prevent it, or take the pain out of it.There is no durable consensus on what addiction is, what causes it, or what should be done about it. Meanwhile, it continues to increase around the world. This book argues that the cause of this failure to control addiction is that the conventional wisdom of the 19th and 20th centuries focused too single-mindedly on the afflicted individual addict. Although addiction obviously manifests itself in individual cases, its prevalence differs dramatically between societies. For example, it can be quite rare in a society for centuries, and then become common when a tribal culture is destroyed or a highly developed civilization collapses. When addiction becomes commonplace in a society, people become addicted not only to alcohol and drugs, but to a thousand other destructive pursuits: money, power, dysfunctional relationships, or video games.A social perspective on addiction does not deny individual differences in vulnerability to addiction, but it removes them from the foreground of attention, because social determinants are more powerful. This book shows that the social circumstances that spread addiction in a conquered tribe or a falling civilisation are also built into today's globalizing free-market society. A free-market society is magnificently productive, but it subjects people to irresistible pressures towards individualism and competition, tearing rich and poor alike from the close social and spiritual ties that normally constitute human life. People adapt to their dislocation by finding the best substitutes for a sustaining social and spiritual life that they can, and addiction serves this function all too well. The book argues that the most effective response to a growing addiction problem is a social and political one, rather than an individual one. Such a solution would not put the doctors, psychologists, social workers, policemen, and priests out of work, but it would incorporate their practices in a larger social project. The project is to reshape society with enough force and imagination to enable people to find social integration and meaning in everyday life. Then great numbers of them would not need to fill their inner void with addictions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding book
I do not easily give superlatives in my praise of books but this one is truly exceptional. It presents a very valuable and well-written account and I can only recommend it most strongly. I think that the study could prove of momentous importance in how we view the world in the 21st century. If only its message were to be taken to heart, we could spare an immense amount of human suffering. Professor Alexander delivers a convincing case that we are manufacturing addiction by the process of economic globalization and the social dislocation that inevitably goes with it. As is made clear, addiction is not something confined to chemicals but spans a whole range from sex, through gambling to the quest for material possessions. The argument takes the author far and wide (to Adolph Eichmann, St Augustine and Socrates amongst others) and occasionally the reader might wonder quite where the argument is going but just in time the author brings it back to a sharp focus and relevance.

Given the monumental task that Professor Alexander sets himself and accomplishes, it would be churlish to point to omissions. Rather, I would call these `points that might be considered for further theorizing'. The reader looking for an integrative biopsychosocial perspective on addiction will not find it here since the book justifiably concentrates on the social dimension. One can only wonder why it is that the drugs and other activities that become addictive are ones that trigger dopaminergic neurotransmission. How is it that such neurotransmission seems to lock into a dynamic interaction with the external objects of addiction? Does a dopamine-opioid link necessarily underlie each addiction? Why, for example, do magic mushrooms, ecstasy or LSD not seem to lead to addiction? What might the neurobiology of bonding and attachment, as described by Jaak Panksepp, say about the objects of addiction? Why do some people with Parkinson's disease develop addictions after taking medication that boosts dopaminergic neurotransmission? One might argue that they were already showing mild dislocation but then the argument would become circular.

These are points for further reflection and research and they in no way detract from the power and insightfulness of this book. Every politician, town planner, police chief and lawyer should be required to read it before being allowed to take office.

Methadone has been used successfully as a substitution agent for heroin dependency for more than 30 years. As a result of its success, other effective methods of treatment have been neglected. Established as a key text on all treatment options for drug misusers, Community Treatment of Drug Misuse: More Than Methadone has been highly praised for its practical orientation based on a solid research background. For the second edition, all the main evidence-based and more pragmatic treatment approaches are reviewed, not only in the management of opiate dependence, but across the range of drugs. It focuses extensively on developments in the last few years as a result of policy initiatives and research findings, including coverage of buprenorphine treatment, the systematic treatment of cocaine abuse and work with special patient groups. This is of direct relevance to medical as well as non-medical practitioners undertaking clinical work in the addictions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not totally convinced
The book is ok in few parts, you have to appreciate the honesty and the straightforwardness used to describe the problem. And I like the references to God seen as someone who takes care of us no matter what (even if this does not mean not to take any action in our life because whatever happens is God's will and this seems to be the author's message, instead). However, I was disappointed to learn that the author sees as solution to the problem a lifetime abstinence. This is totally out of order and I think it's unhealthy, too. I once saw a very good nutrionist who told me that in this life we can eat anything, even a burger and chips from McDonald. What matter is self-control and a lifelong eating balance, not a lifelong eating abstinence. That's so wrong that I wonder how she managed to have her book published!! I mean, she did not even eat her wedding cake!! do you call this normal? nope, sorry, I don't agree with this approach. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone concerned about an older parent
This book is written for anyone concerned about an older parent, grandparent or other older adult who has a problem with alcohol or mood-altering medications. It is the only book I've found that covers this topic so completely and, not only does it explain the problem clearly, it offers practical steps to help the older person get the right kind of help and live out the rest of their golden years sober -- able to, once again, enjoy family, grandchildren and friends.Best insight: many of the things attributed to aging can be a result of addiction. With sobriety, many or all of the problems go away.

Product Description

LSD belongs to the class of drugs that, taken orally, can produce dramatic psychological experiences. There appears to be a wide range of response to LSD. Commonly there are reports of sensory changes, extreme variations in strong emotions, new perspectives about oneself, changed views of-and feelings toward-other people, changes from prior chronic situations, shifts in interest, and new integrative experiences which may be delusional or mystically religious.

The contributors to this volume, which was first published in 1965, accent the culture that embraces LSD. They marshal evidence that the effects of any drug tend to be in keeping with the values of the culture or subculture in which it is used, or if the user's wish is to express rebellion or dissidence, the effect will stand in opposition to prevailing values. The same substance has different effects in different cultures; and the same effects may be achieved with different substances. In the past, alcohol was hailed in much the same way as LSD. There was even a time when coffee was brought under the same kind of proscription that today holds for opiates.

Such conflicts in values and morals continue with a new generation of drugs, which makes this volume especially relevant. What could be done was an open issue at the time this book was first published. The contributors encourage citiens, scientists, physicians, mystics, ministers, lawmakers and lawmen, drug users and abstainers, to learn and to think more about the phenomena of drug use and to develop plans for social action. This volume stresses the need to develop a policy regarding the handling of classes of drugs and drug users. Although LSD has fallen in favor as a drug of choice for those interested in experimentation, the issues raised in this volume remain with us.
