Product Description
Vasovagal syncope ("the common faint") and near syncope from initial orthostatic hypotension are huge medical problems given the number of patients and their impact on quality of life. The treatment options are often unsatisfactory. The studies in this thesis set out to investigate the potential benefits of physical counter-manoeuvres in the acute management of vasovagal syncope and initial orthostatic hypotension. Once shown to be effective, further studies elucidated how they work. ... Read more

Tilt table testing has been used for more than 50 years to study the body's responses to various stimuli, but only recently has it become the "gold standard" for evaluation of symptoms of syncope. In this article, the authors discuss the expert consensus statement recently issued by the American College of Cardiology on when and how to evaluate patients with the technique. They also provide basic background information on syncope and summarize current understanding of neurocardiogenic (or vasovagal) syncope, which is one common type. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Syncope (pronounced /?s??k?pi/) is the medical term for fainting, a sudden, usually temporary, loss of consciousness generally caused by insufficient oxygen in the brain either through cerebral hypoxia or through hypotension, but possibly for other reasons. Typical symptoms progress through dizziness, clamminess of the skin, a dimming of vision or brownout, possibly tinnitus, complete loss of vision, weakness of limbs to physical collapse. These symptoms falling short of complete collapse, or a fall down, may be referred to as a syncoptic episode. Syncope due to hypoxia will normally occur if the air breathed contains less than 16% oxygen at atmospheric pressure. Less than 11% oxygen in the air at this pressure can lead to death by suffocation. However, the amount of oxygen in the air is dependent on the partial pressure of oxygen, meaning that, if a person inhales pressurized gas, e.g., while scuba diving, a breathing gas containing less than 16% oxygen can still contain enough to prevent hypoxia. ... Excerpt: Dysgeusia (pronounced ) is the distortion of the sense of taste. Dysgeusia is also often associated with ageusia, which is the complete lack of taste, and hypogeusia, which is the decrease in taste sensitivity. An alteration in taste or smell may be a secondary process in various disease states, or it may be the primary symptom. The distortion in the sense of taste is the only symptom, and diagnosis is usually complicated since the sense of taste is tied together with other sensory systems. Common causes of dysgeusia include chemotheraphy and zinc deficiency. Different drugs could also be responsible for altering taste and resulting in dysgeusia. Due to the variety of causes of dysgeusia, there are many possible treatments that are effective in alleviating or terminating the symptoms of dysgeusia. These include artificial saliva, pilocarpine, zinc supplementation, alterations in drug therapy, and alpha lipoic acid. Taste Receptors of the Tongue. The sense of taste is based on the detection of chemicals by specialized taste cells in the mouth. The mouth, throat, larynx, and esophagus all have taste buds, which are replaced every ten days. Each taste bud contains receptor cells. Afferent nerves make contact with the receptor cells at the base of the taste bud. A single taste bud is innervated by several afferent nerves, while a single efferent fiber innervates several taste buds. Fungiform papillae are present on the anterior portion of the tongue while circumvallate papillae and foliate papillae are found on the posterior portion of the tongue.
