5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Explain TS to Kids - Including Classmates
My 9 year old son has Tourette's and has been diagnosed as such since age 5, but has not displayed a lot of awareness of his own tics until this year. We decided to tell his class about his TS so they would understand why he moves more and sometimes makes noises. When I read this book to my son, he cried, but it was with recognizing how he feels, and when I asked him if he wanted me to read this book to his class, he said yes. We did, and the classmates listened very attentively and seemed interested in the story - one fellow classmate even wanted to know "What's going to happen NEXT?!" I think it helped my son feel a bit more comfortable and certainly helped his classmates understand - some of whom had never noticed his tics, but others who had. I have found it on my son's floor from time to time, so I'm grateful he feels he can read it again and again, even if he doesn't feel like approaching others. I would recommend this book to anyone with young children with TS - it is probably appropriate for grades 2 and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Kids
My son is newly diagnosed with Tourette syndrome and OCD. This is a good book to help him cope. He now understands hes not the only kid struggling with this condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son likes this book
My 10 year old has TS and we have recently started discussing what it is and why he has it. This was a great book for him to read and worked as a wonderful tool for us to discuss his TS and to give him strategies for dealing with other children. It was also helpful for his little brother, age 7 to read to help him understand his brother better.

4-0 out of 5 stars children's book re: Tourette's
I found this book to be pretty good about describing a boy's experience with Tourrette's and how he deals with telling his friend, and other kids. It's better than some others I've read, but not as clear and helpful as Tic Talk, by Dylan Peters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tourettes for kids
This book was a great summary of the progression of Tourette's in kids, for kids. ... Read more

Now in an updated edition, Children with Tourette Syndrome offers even more. The second edition includes new information about the effects of Tourette syndrome at different stages of development from childhood into adulthood. There’s more on coexisting conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, Asperger syndrome, and learning disabilities. The book also provides an overview of the biochemistry of TS, what to expect from a medical workup, as well as a discussion of more than 30 different drugs used to treat TS and related conditions. There are strategies for coping with many of the challenging characteristics of TS such as impulsivity, obsessive thoughts, attention and sleep problems, and difficulties with sensory integration. Product Description
Tics are a fact of life for kids with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and related disorders. And for most kids, the symptoms of their disorder aren't even the most frustrating part--others' reactions can make children feel anxious and extremely self-conscious.

Coping with Tourette Syndrome includes forty activities to help kids with TS, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) understand, prepare for, and mask their tics. Kids will also learn how to best explain their tics to friends and curious strangers using humor, games, or brief scripts they have prepared.

The activities in this workbook address managing TS and related disorders in specific situations, such as at school, at the movies, when out to dinner, on special occasions, when visiting friends for sleepovers or parties, when taking tests, and in places of worship. After completing these exercises, kids with TS will have all the tools they need to handle their tics with confidence and grace in any situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!! What a help this book has been for me, the child, the teachers, and the parents!!!
I work in a school district and have used this book extensively. I have made copies and done many of the activities with children. It is amazing how it helps a student to be able deal with what is going on within them selves and how they interact with others in the world. It was a huge self-esteem booster for the student to know what to say &/or do when tics occur. Adults who are unfamiliar with the disorder have told me that the child can control it when he/she wants to. This book helped raise awareness in others such as teachers and school staff who really did not understand. The `phases of the moon' was a tremendous help here because it gave a common language for the child, the teachers, and the parents. For example, if a child told his teacher that he was in a full moon everyone would know what that meant and how much help that child needed for that day. This book helped the child improve peer relationships by knowing and practicing what to say when tics occur. Other children were more accepting when they understood. I regularly recommend this book to parents whose child has been diagnosed Tourette Syndrome. It helps the whole family learn how to deal with it. And now teachers have started asking to buy a copy of it for their teams. ... Read more

My son was having problems at the beginning of his 1st grade year, becuase of his tics & Tourettes. The kids didn't understand him and were making fun of him.I brought this book in and read it to the class, and it was great. They got to ask questions and they had tons!!I highly recommend this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent:My 8 year old daughter really connected with the book!
My 8 year old daughter with Tourette Syndrome really enjoyed this book. It is often the book of choice for evening reading. The school is planning to use this book as part of introducing and teaching a second grade class about Tourette Syndrome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Taking Tourette Syndrome to School
I purchased this book to use during a lesson on Tourette Syndrome I was teaching to first graders, to help them understand the condition one of their classmates has. It was an excellent adjunct to my lesson. I did skip the page regarding medication since this child's family has not chosen that for him at this point. Otherwise the book is very helpful and child friendly as are many of the books in the "Special Kids in School" series (by various authors). One note for anyone introducing this book and attempting to talk about tics with this age group, some of the children may decide that they have Tourette's since some in my audience who have or have had transient tics felt so comfortable with the idea of Tourette Syndrome, they insisted they also have it. It was interesting trying to describe diagnostic differences to six year olds! That said, I was very happy to be able to use this book.

Product Description
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic, neurobehavioral disorder of childhood that has traditionally been treated with medication. Although available, many mental health professionals are not familiar with an effective behavioral therapy for tic disorders.

This therapist guide outlines a safe and scientifically proven treatment that can help sufferers of TS and other tic disorders effectively manage their tics and improve their quality of life. The treatment described is an 11-session package for children and adults (ages 9 and older). Psychoeducation about tic disorders is blended with multiple components of behavior therapy, including habit reversal training (HRT), relaxation training, and function-based treatments. The primary goal of this program is to teach the patient effective tic management skills rather than to cure the tic disorder.

At the start of the program, you will work with your patient to create a hierarchy of tics to be addressed in treatment. Each week, a new tic will be targeted and an appropriate function-based intervention implemented.Tic management skills are supplemented with relaxed breathing and progressive muscle relaxation exercises to help the patient combat anxiety. Relapse prevention and booster sessions help reinforce the skills taught in therapy and give the patient a positive outlook for the future.

Complete with step-by-step instructions for conducting sessions, as well as lists of materials needed and copies of necessary forms, this guide provides you with all the information you need to effectively administer treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly the BEST book I have read about tourettes
This book was a lifesaver for me since my son was recently diagnosed with Tourettes. I bought several books, and this one is my absolute favorite & I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
This is a must read for people trying to understand Tourette's.It is an easy to read and understand book for people with little knowledge of the syndrome. The author shares her personal experience as well as facts about meds, treatment, symptoms, misdiagnosis, and learning to live with it.
Very informative. A lot is packed into this one book.
Highly recommended for people that either have TS or have a family member with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars helpful
i plan to become a special ed teacher to work with tourettes kids and other this was a very infortive book. i liked thAT THE AUTHOR HAD EXPIERNCE WITith tourette and was not just someone that had reasearch it and then wrote a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for parents or adults w/ TS
Miles from NY is mistaken when he says the author has 3 kids w/ TS, but doesn't have it herself. She does and mentions that in the beginning of the book. Because of her experience in having TS and then having children with it, she is helpful to walk readers through what to expect and how to head off problems before they exist. She also has a great deal of info for adults with TS...to tell or not tell at job interviews, socializing, and even living situations. A caring and careful job of communication on the issues facing those with TS or TS in their families.

3-0 out of 5 stars Careful with this one
There are many helpful items in this book. But my one complaint is it is written by the mother of touretters. She is not a sufferer herself.Shimberg strays from the subject all too often and much of the book reads like a parent's manual for rearing any type of child.I am glad I read this book as a sufferer of tourrette syndrome but one must be aware that it is geared toward parents and teachers, not adults living with tourette syndrome. ... Product Description
This welcome guide explains how to treat tics and Tourette’s syndrome using natural and alternative therapies, from nutritional therapy, behavioral and counseling therapies, EEG biofeedback, and homeopathy to bodywork, energy medicine, and Chinese medicine. Author Sheila Rogers discusses categories of tics including spasmodic facial movements, eye blinking, mild sounds, and humming. She persuasively counters the medical establishment’s standard claim that such disorders are “mysterious” and based in genetics. The dramatic spike in cases, she argues, belies this explanation. Natural Treatments for Tics and Tourette’s takes a closer look at the environmental factors and underlying physical imbalances that trigger these conditions’ symptoms.

In this second edition to Tics and Tourette's: Breakthrough Discoveries in Natural
Treatments, Rogers offers a detailed natural treatment plan. No more will patients have to rely on traditional, drug-based treatments that often carry multiple side effects. In eight sections, the book offers advice from medical experts, the latest reports in medical research, a checklist of common tic triggers, inspirational stories from families who have successfully conquered tics and Tourette’s, and practical worksheets for readers to use in their treatment and research. Each of the 23 chapters includes a place for notes and “Takeaway Tips” summarizing key points. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good information
This book is worth the money for me.My son has had mild tics since he was a young child.I wish I had the knowledge back then that I have today about food additives and allergy foods, but I didn't.He is now in his mid 20 and the tics have increased and gotten worse. This book caught my eye bacause I know, now, how food affects us, both mentally and physically. My 90 year old uncle was told when he developed cancer to just go home and enjoy his last days.Prayerfully, he researched cancer and found that the food we eat can have a HUGE affect on our body's ability to heal.He eliminated all gluten, dairy and sugar from his diet and within a 9 month period, his cancer was gone! The doctor, being a conventional doctor, couldn't understand it, but said just keep doing what your doing! My point is that this book also has these 3 foods as culprits, so I bought it for my son.He is in the process of reading the book.I am confident that if he can eliminate these foods from his diet, his symptoms will improve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not alone!
I am about a third way through this book and it has given me hope. My teenage son has had mild to moderate tics for a couple of years now and this book has given me some possible ideas on why and how to research this further. The personal stories are great and made me aware of how many people are going through similar situations and how many different levels of tics there are. Many thanks to the author and families in the book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly "non-scientific" alternative medicine
I am an RN and am conditioned to favor very scientific researched evidence.Although I appreciated the books attempts to link things such as fluoride, aspartame, pesticides, mold, yeast overgrowth, and allergies to Tourette Syndrome, it seemed that most of all links were "hearsay" and letters from readers. It would say something like "many people report that eating sweet increases their tics."

Of course I believe that having a healthy body (exercising, eating well, sleeping enough) will make anyone's tics better, I couldn't buy into the stretched logic that drinking fluoride in water exacerbates tics.

After reading it I just felt completely frustrated like everything from the dust in the air to the sugar in my sons corn cereal was making his tics worse. I finally went online and watched this hour long Tourette seminar from the leading Yale expert Dr. John Walkup and I felt enormously better. You can get to it by going to the Tourette Syndrome association website and clicking on the newly diagnosed link.I was able to get the facts that I was craving.

I hope I haven't offended anyone, that wasn't my intention. This book simply wasn't what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A recommended read for those seeking other solutions to their Tourette's problems
Tourette's can be a difficult disorder to deal with, but it's treatable. "Natural Treatments for Tics & Tourette's: A Patient and Family Guide" is an alternative treatment guide for sufferers of Tourette's who don't want to turn to traditional drugs and their high saturation of side effects. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
My son has TS and this book was great to share with his classroom. It helped them understand that he wasn't "ticking" on purpose and he wasn't a "retard" (as one boy called him). It also helped my son understand ways to cope when kids say things about his tics. It was written by a 9 year old with TS and written plain and simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Starting Point
Ryan's story is both moving and inspiring. It was the first thing that helped my son feel that he was not alone, that somebody understood what he was feeling. It was also incredibly helpful to educate classroom peers about TS in an age-appropriate way.Shoudl be required reading for anyone who loves a person with TS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to learn about Tourette Syndrome
Dylan Peters is just a typical boy who loves to play sports, has subjects in school he likes, probably has a few he doesn't, has lots of friends and comes from a family who loves and believes in him. In one way he is not typical, but for the most part, unless you knew otherwise, you would probably think he was being silly when he blinked his eyes rapidly or opened his mouth wide (really wide!). Dylan has Tourette Syndrome, or "TS for short." It all began when he was four years old. He claims that "I started to jerk my head uncontrollably" and his parents grew very concerned and eventually he ended up at a neurologist's for testing.

It was a very frightening situation all around, but at least it wasn't a life-threatening diagnosis. It was an embarrassing situation for Dylan to be in because he was worried that his assortment of tic and "uncontrollable body movements" would set him apart from the other children at school. In his own words about TS, "It's like your brain has a mission to annoy you and make everyone around you notice these bizarre actions." He didn't want anyone to know about his TS, so it was kept a secret for a long time. The tics did seem to get worse and the neurologist prescribed a medication that wouldn't eliminate them, but would reduce them. One of his teachers knew about his condition, but vowed to "keep it a secret," but how long could this go on? His tics were very noticeable at times.

By the time Dylan hit the second grade he was trying out a "new medicine that helped slow down my tics, but they were still there." Kids were starting to notice and were questioning him. He was getting all stressed out and worried and those emotions, in and of themselves, could cause tics. It was time. He could no longer keep his Tourette Syndrome a secret. His mother was going to accompany him to school and he was going to talk to his class about TS. Mrs. Sudhalter began to lead the class through the game of differences, "Stand Up-Sit Down." This was enough to make anyone tick like a clock. Tic, tic, tic . . . were the other children going to understand or would Dylan lose all his friends?

Dylan had to make the difficult choice of telling his classmate that he had TS, a confession that could possibly leave him friendless. I loved his easy, but informative way of writing. He does an excellent job of giving out the specifics of the disorder while making sure to inform the reader that it's not an easy thing to live with nor disguise. This is an important book because it is written by someone who actually suffers from it. The black and white art work, done by his friend Zachary Wendland, adds a lot to this story. The forward is by Major League baseball Player Jim Eisenreich, a fellow sufferer. In the back of the book is a brief section on strategies and special accommodations that need to be kept in mind when working with a child who has TS.

Quill says: If you would like to know about Tourette Syndrome, this book would be an excellent place to start!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody Has SOMEthing
"Tic Talk" is a down-to-earth book written by a kid for kids. In a time when we are reading and teaching lots about accepting and loving others, it's important to cross all the lines of understanding, including neurological. Each of us has some kind of challenge. Sometimes it's more visible than others. Everything that comes to us that's hard, challenges us to rise. Young author Dylan Peters, with the support of his family, teacher and friends, does exactly that--he rises to learn and teach acceptance. Peters doesn't stop there, though. He also declares that he will not let TS stand in the way of accomplishing his goals and he encourages readers to do the same.

This is a great book for kids, teaching understanding, reaching for your dreams and getting through the hard challenges. It's a great book for every school and every library or if TS has touched the life in some way (directly or indirectly) of a child you know. It's an award winning book of the "Eric Hoffer Award--Excellence in Independent Publishing."

The forward is by Jim Eisenreich, a major league baseball player with TS.The back of the book includes "10 Successful Strategies for working with children with Tourette Syndrome" by Brad Cohen, author of "Front of the Class: How Tourete Sydrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had." There is also a list of additional resources including phone numbers and web sites.

This hardbound book has a substantial feel of high quality. It really is an all around great book.

Congratulations Dylan, on a project well done!

Ranging from three teenagers learning to come to grips with teasing to adults encountering discrimination, the collection represents the incredible diversity of a disorder as diverse as life itself. The drama of living with a disability and the comedy of a Tourette syndrome conference show the range of a book the Oliver Sacks called "A fascinatingly varied book." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost amazing!
I've found most books about Tourette Syndrome, and the reason I've avoided reading any till now, concentrate on children. My boyfriend has Tourette Syndrome and I wanted to know more about the experiences of adults with Tourette's. This book does that... mostly. There are some fascinating stories and amazing descriptions of compulsive behavior and the feeling of holding in tics but there are some juvenile stories which really didn't grab me and a few stories that seem to lack any editing at all, complete with spelling mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Momkey's
I purchased this book several years ago. Since then, I have had the opportunity to observe several other children-one 19 year old with tourette syndrome. This book is full of a varity of people with different forms of Tourette's. The chldren I have met also have different types of "twitches and tic's". This book shows that the media-or televisions shows that protray Tourette's, are totally overblown. Some people do indeed "twitch" or "vocally" give out annoying sounds. Some are very well controlled in public, but let loose at home. The book is an excellent example of different examples of Tourette's and how to become aware of what you are seeing or hearing. Anyone really interested in the subject - read this book! (:

I am a parent of a twenty year old with Tourettes Syndrome. This book helped me understand how my son views the world.I just didn't realize the numerous behaviors related to Tourettes. I wish I would of read this bookten years ago. It would of made me a little less critical of some of his behaviors. This book is a must for anyone wanting to understand more aboutTourettes. ... Product Description

With lightness and warmth, musician Nick van Bloss recounts his personal experience of Tourette's syndrome—symptoms, or tics, that include obsessive physical movements and involuntary utterances and sounds. He traces the embarrassment that came with his tics, his refuge in piano playing, and his family history of the disease. With frankness and humor, he also describes coming to terms with his sexuality, finding true love, and battling a potentially terminal cancer while continuing to handle his socially debilitating condition of Tourette's syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo for Busy Body
Busy Body:My Life with Tourette's Syndrome by Nick van Bloss is the most powerful and touching TS autobiography I have ever read. His descriptions for this very challenging condition are quite clear, revealing and help the reader get an idea of what it may be like to go through this ordeal day after day after day.TS is such an unusual disorder.Sure there are more painful and more life threatening conditions (I don't mean to dismiss any other disorder as "not difficult"), but TS is unusual and particularly difficult because you often have no choice but to let everyone know that "something is wrong."TS "tries" to break every social convention and rule."It is astounding how many social situations require silence or general quietness - most every classroom situation, movies, waiting in line, traveling in a public setting, shopping, theatre, etc.Until you experience TS (yourself or with a family member or friend), you have no idea how much of our society requires participants to "not make a scene" and "stay reasonably quiet."This book was difficult for me to read because I have a son with a pretty strong case of TS.I noticed many connections between Nick and my son.It helped me develop a better understanding of what my son is going through. I really don't think most people understand how painful TS can be and Nick pointed this out pretty clearly. He didn't elaborate too much on this point and based on my son's experiences, I know that Nick must be dealing with pain all the time and is actually pretty heroic about it.Although it was painful, I found this to be the most uplifting book on TS I have ever read.It reinforced teh idea that a TS sufferer can live a pretty good life and that many gifts may be associated with the condition.Nick is also a VERY humble human being who is compassionate, intelligent, sensitive and perceptive, not to mention his incredible sense of dedication and perseverance. This book is worth the read just to know him as a human being, whether he had TS or not.I only hope that this book is read by a great number of people. If anyone knows how I could e-mail or write to him, please let me know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book-
I heard about this book on a TS webboard and decided to order it.I was not sorry I did.It is an excellent book and he really portrays what it is like to have TS in a candid, funny way.I recommend this to anyone who has TS or would like to know what it is like to have it. ... Read more

Product Description

As a child with Tourette syndrome, Brad Cohen was ridiculed, beaten, mocked, and shunned. Children, teachers, and even family members found it difficult to be around him. As a teen, he was viewed by many as purposefully misbehaving, even though he had little power over the twitches and noises he produced, especially under stress. Even today, Brad is sometimes ejected from movie theaters and restaurants.

But Brad Cohen's story is not one of self-pity. His unwavering determination and fiercely positive attitude conquered the difficulties he faced in school, in college, and while job hunting. Brad never stopped striving, and after twenty-four interviews, he landed his dream job: teaching grade school and nurturing all of his students as a positive, encouraging role model.

5-0 out of 5 stars Front of the Class
This is a really great story about both how a disability affects a person's life, and how the attitude of an individual can change how they look at life. I would recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best seat in the house!
Read this book from the library first. Wanted it for my own. As a sibling/caregiver for a disabled person, it reaffirms one thing-we are all human beings with flaws, some we have no control over, some we acquire. But all of us yearn for acceptance and dignity. Some, like Mr. Cohen earn it by blood, sweat, and alot of tears and frustration. I'm glad he shared this with others. I also like the Hallmark movie of the same name.

4-0 out of 5 stars The story of a true overcomer
Everyone can learn from Brad Cohen's determination, positive attitude and sense of humor. He determined not to let Tourette's win in his life. In school he was considered a behavior problem and just needing a little self-control by teachers. He was mocked by kids or simply ignored. Even though he hated school, he became a teacher! The book tells of his breakthroughs in winning approval and acceptance from others. You don't have to have a disability to be inspired by this story. All of us have weaknesses and things to overcome. The Appendix offers positive thoughts and actions for living with a disability. A good inspirational read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Front of the Class
Brad Cohen is positive and an exuberant personality. He has his life-time companion which is called Tourette Syndrome (TS). When he was 7 years old, he started making noises and barking as well as jerking and twitching his face, neck and part of his body. When he was young, he and his family didn't know about TS. His doctor suggested that he could stop his tics intentionally. Brad was not able to control his tics and there was no cure. Because of this he had hard time at school and until 12 years old, he had no friends in his life. His school teachers didn't believe him so that he often was sent to the Principal's office.
However, his mother and his younger brother always supported Brad and they moved when he was 12 years old. Brad and Jeff began to attend a new school. However, teachers of the new school were the same. When Brad was sent to the Principal's office, however this Principal listened to Brad and believed him and gave a chance to explain his situation in front of the teachers and students. Before, he had no friends, and no one wanted to eat lunch with him. So he had never eaten lunch with someone at the cafeteria until he became 12 years old. The Principal who accepted Brad and the other ignorant teachers who didn't believe Brad's TS became the strongest incentive for him to become a teacher. He wanted to become a teacher who accepts children as they are.
Brad had also difficult time when applied for a job in Atlanta, Georgia. I don't want to share it here, but his positive thoughts and perseverance resolved this and became a teacher. He proved himself that he was very good at teaching and received the First Class Teacher of the Year award in the state of Georgia. You should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coping With Tourette Syndrome...
Barbara Moe has done a great job writing a book that is very informative for parents of children with Tourette Syndrome, yet light and entertaining enough to hold the attention of a teen or preteen that is seeking help and/or advice on how to deal with this disorder. Many books that I have read on the subject simply gave the facts about TS but offered little help. This book was refreshingly different and really gave me an insight to what my twelve-year-old son deals with every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi, I'm Adam
This book is WONDERFUL!We are raising our 11 year old nephew who has Tourette's, along with several other things, and he really needed some help understanding Tourette's so that he could explain it to his peers. He's been picked on at school because of his tics and we wanted something that he could read and understand. This fit the bill!THANK YOU, ADAM!He's reading Adam and the Magic Marble now.He said its a little harder to read (he's a little behind in reading skills than most 11 y/o's) but its a good read.He took it to bed tonight to read more.

3-0 out of 5 stars WOW.. I'm glad some of you liked my book..
WOW! You have no idea how good it feels seeing that some people actually appreciated my writings.. that's just awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to understand how i felt (I was only 10) about having to live with Tourette's Syndrome. Thanks even more for reviewing my book.. wow. I'm glad to see I've been able to reach people and help them. I'm 20 now, and it's been 10 years since I wrote those books, but it was a genuine feeling of accomplishment and meaning when I read your reviews. Again, thank you very much, you just made my dad/week/year..

(It wouldn't let me post this without rating the book, so I gave it a middle-rating of 3, hope I don't affect anything with that)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for even an oldster like me
The book is written for a very young audience, but when my 27 year-old son read it he cried. He could remember feeling the same way, and even doing the same things. He had never talked to anyone about it, but really openedup after reading it. We had a hard time getting a diagnosis, so it wasespecially heartfelt for me to learn that we're not alone in this bigthing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful
This is by far the most useful book I have read on Tourette Syndrome, as well as one of the best books I have read on special needs in general."Tics and Tourette Syndrome" is short enough and concise enough that an overwhelmed parent can read it in one sitting.Do not be fooled by the book's length, however.Word for word, this book contains more useful information than any other book I have read; there is no filler, there are no anecdotes.

If you have time for only one book on Tourette's, this is the book. That is a very tired line, I know, but in this case it really is true.I have recommended this book to other parents of children with Tourette's as well as to friends and relatives, in an effort to dispel misconceptions about what Tourette's is and is not.

Product Description
If your child has Tourette Syndrome (TS), or any other chronic motor or vocal tic disorder, you know how important it is to get the best treatment available. Behavior therapy, as described in this workbook, is a treatment for tic disorders that is scientifically proven to help sufferers of TS manage their symptoms.

This 11-session program involves helping your child become aware of his tics and the situations that make them worse. In conjunction with visits to a qualified mental health professional, your family will learn to restructure your child's environment so tics occur less frequently. With your help, your child will create a list of tics to be addressed during treatment. Each week a new tic will be targeted and your child will be taught specific exercises for managing that tic. The program also includes relaxation techniques designed to help your child combat anxiety and stress. Relapse prevention strategies will help your family maintain progress and keep your child motivated long after treatment has ended.

Complete with psychoeducational information, as well as child-friendly forms and worksheets, this workbook will help your family better understand TS and the ways you can effectively support your child. The goal of this program is not to cure the tic disorder, but to teach your child skills for managing tics well into the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Done!!!
This book is a must read for those who have Tourette Syndrome(TS) and those who don't.If you do have TS this book will encourage, uplift, and inspire you, by using someone else's experiences. It shows you that you are not the only one who has dealt with the affects of TS. You get an indept look on how Mike (the main character in the book) deals with his on going tics which are very humorous indeed! It had me laughing throughout the whole book! But it was also very imformative.I do not have TS but I know someone who does, and reading the book helped me to understand what the disease was really about. On TV you see so many different ways that TS is portrayed but never the correct way. In the book the author gives a clear and concise definition of TS and some of the behavior associated with it. I now have a comprehensible understanding about TS and how it not only affects the person but their family and friends as well. You have got to get this book today if you want to learn more about TS and laugh at the same time!
