Product Description
Toxoplasmosis is caused by a one-celled protozoan parasite known as Toxoplasma gondii. In the United States, it is estimated that approximately 30% of cats, the primary carriers, have been infected by T. gondii. Most humans contract toxoplasmosis by eating cyst-contaminated raw or undercooked meat, vegetables, or milk products or when they come into contact with the T. gondii eggs from cat feaces while cleaning a cat's litterbox, gardening, or playing in a sandbox. Approx 1 in 4 (more than 60 million) people in the USAare infected with the parasite, and in the UK between 0.5 and 1% of individuals become infected each year. By the age of 50, 40% of people test positive for the parasite. The predilection of this parasite is for the central nervous system (CNS) causing behavioral and personality alterations as well as fatal necrotizing encephalitis, and is especially dangerous for HIV infected patients.

Though there have been tremendous strides in our understanding of the biology of Toxoplasma gondii in the last decade, there has been no systemic review of all of the information that has accumulated. Toxoplasma gondii provides the first comprehensive summary of literature on this organism by leading experts in the field who were responsible for organising the 7th International Congress on Toxoplasmosis in May 2003. It offeres systematic reviews of the biology of this pathogen as well as descriptions of the methods and resources used. Within the next year the T. gondii genome will be completed making this an indispensable research resource for biologists, physicians, parasitologists, and for all those contemplating experiments using T. gondii.

* Serves as a model for understanding invasion of host cells by parasites, immune response, motility, differentiation, phylogenetics, evolution and organelle acquisition
* Discusses the protocols related to genetic manipulation, cell biology and animal models while also providing reference material on available resources for working with this organism ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pieces, Parts, and Processes of Toxoplasma Gondii
This is a highly specialized book for researchers studying Toxoplasma gondii. As little is known about "what it all means," the emphsis of the book is on what is known, which takes the form of elaborate descriptions of the biology, chemistry, and genetics of Tg. There are occasional mentions of infected mice becomming combative with cats, all but guaranteeing them being eaten, but if you are looking for an emphasis on the behavioral changes produced by toxoplasmosis in mice or humans, this is not the book to find elaborate descriptions of these concepts.

The book is full of incredible photographs, charts, graphs, and other lists of statistics. The writing is excellent and clear, albeit almost entirely technical, with very little emphasis on conceptual matters. If you want a comprehensive book on the latest research on Tg to further your own research, this is the book for you. If you want a book that covers theories about how Tg may have influenced entire cultures, due to its effect on human behavior, you will not find that here. The line of reasoning in this book is to describe the pieces, parts, and processes of Tg and how those might be manipulated to develop a vaccine or cure. Almost nothing besides Tg itself is discussed, with the exception of some mention of other parasites. But Tg is described at a level of detail you will not likely find elsewhere at this time. ... Product Description
Opportunistic Infections: Toxoplasma, Sarcocystis, and Microsporidia will focus on two important Genera of Apicomplexan parasites, Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis species, and the medically important members of the Phylum Microsporida. We have been fortunate in obtaining excellent contributions from many experts in the field.
Volumes in the "World Class Parasites" book series are written for researchers, students and scholars who enjoy reading about excellent research on problems of global significance. Each volume focuses on a parasite, or group of parasites, that has a major impact on human health, or agricultural productivity, and against which we have no satisfactory defense. The volumes are intended to supplement more formal texts that cover taxonomy, life cycles, morphology, vector distribution, symptoms and treatment. They integrate vector, pathogen and host biology and celebrate the diversity of approach that comprises modern parasitological research. ... Read more
