Product Description
Trichotillomania (TTM) is a complex disorder that is difficult to treat as few effective therapeutic options exist. Behavior therapy has the greatest empirical support, but the number of mental health providers familiar with TTM and its treatment is quite small. This manual was written as a tool for therapists to become familiar with an effective treatment for TTM. The treatment approach described in this guide blends traditional behavior therapy elements of habit reversal training and stimulus control techniques with the more contemporary behavioral elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Unlike traditional interventions that aim to change type or frequency of pulling-related cognitions in the hopes of reducing urges to pull hair, this innovative program uses strategies to change the function of these cognitions. Clients are taught to see urges for what they really are and to accept their pulling-related thoughts, feelings, and urges without fighting against them. This is accomplished through discussions about the function of language and defusion exercises that show the client how to respond to thoughts about pulling less literally.Over the course of 10 weeks, clients learn to be aware of their pulling and warning signals, use self-management strategies for stopping and preventing pulling, stop fighting against their pulling-related urges and thoughts, and work toward increasing their quality of life. Self-monitoring and homework assignments keep clients motivated and engaged throughout.

I have been a puller for almost 20 years, it is a confusing and debilitating disorder.I have prayed and prayed for God to deliver me from this, and just to be normal.I decided to give this book a try, and I just got through the first chapter, and am astounded at the insight to this disorder the author has, It has already given me a level of empowerment over this that I have never had before. This is definately a MUST HAVE for any and all trich sufferers!! I am looking forward to using all the tools available in the book to regain my life, hair and eyelashes!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful at all
I couldn't even get through this book... not a smooth read at all.... and from what I read there is nothing it can really help you with if you have this Trichotillomania.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for Hair Pullers: Understanding and Copying with Trichotillomania
This book was very informative for my research paper. It was also helpful in understanding what help my daughter needs with her hairpulling.I thought it covered all areas of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver!!!
My daughter had been pulling out her hair for five months before I found this book. It is primarily written for adolescents and adults with trich, but many of the information can apply to children. There is one chapter on younger children with trich. It had a tip in there that I tried which has, in three weeks, improved my daughter's pulling to where it is almost nonexistent!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - not helpful
I bought this book hoping it would help my ten year-old boy. He glanced at the pages and set it aside. I read the first section and realized this book is not written to help young children. I think the authors need to narrow down the target audience - it is not kid friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
We used this bought and used this book over 2 years ago at the request of our child psychologist. It was such a fantastic help - especially the strategies! This disorder can turn into a life long problem. We were lucky enough to spot it quickly and get it addressed.Within a week of working with the therapist, this book and having the back up of my daughters school teacher she stopped pulling. There have been no more incidents (her eyelashes were completely gone at the time) and only occasionally I notice her hands drifting to her eyelashes. This book is a MUST for any parent dealing with this problem.I am so grateful to the author!

5-0 out of 5 stars a lifesaver
I was devastated when I discovered my daughter was pulling. At first she denied it, but once she came around, I gave her this book and we went over the plan together. She was nine at the time. She really enjoyed designing a tailor made program and earning the rewards, and she was motivated to use her fidgets! Moreover, it took something awful like TTM and actually made it less scary and even slightly fun - it helped break the ice for our conversations. After a few months, she had almost stopped pulling, and the summer was great. Now that school started, I think she is doing it again, though she denied it and got very upset when I mentioned it.Once I brought up the rewards system, she was actually willing to talk about using her fidgets again and now she is excited to save points for a DS.

I don't know if this will work for every child, as they must be motivated to work at it.Plus, there are varying degrees of severity. However, I think it makes great reading for both parents and children, and it certainly has made a godsend for us as she absolutely refuses to see a specialist(though I consulted one on my own).

4-0 out of 5 stars Trichotillomania
I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter who had begun the hair pulling "habit". It was very sad to hear her say that she can't help herself and continues to pull her hair out.We noticed spots on her head that were very thin.We read this book together but she would read it on her own also.It was written where she understood it and it has helped tremendously. We have discovered trigger spots and use the ideas in the book to change the habit. She has done a tremendous job at learning to control the urge to pull her hair.I would recommend this book for younger children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
My 10 year old daughter started pulling her hair 6 months ago.Her pediatrician told us she had trich. We tried EVERYTHING!Scolding, bribing, explaining, talking to her...EVERYTHING!After reading through this book, she was able to understand the reasons behind trich. The character in the book, Sally Sample, was very age appropriate and "talked" right to my daughter.

Although we have many "strategies" laying around our home, it is worth it!!

I am proud to say, my daughter has not pulled in 2 months now!

I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

Product Description
Trichotillomania has been part of the life of Gary Hennerberg since the age of six. His personal story takes you deeply into his thoughts as he searches for ways to cope with the baffling urge to pull his hair. In this book, Gary reveals three ways he has learned to co-exist with trichotillomania: his faith, self-acceptance, and discovering his gifts and talents. This is a book of hope, inspiration and encouragement for people who feel isolated and powerless over trichotillomania and other mysterious compulsive disorders. As a child, Gary believed he was the only person in the world who pulled his hair and he kept his hair pulling urge a secret. Today we know trichotillomania (also called trich or TTM) is silently suffered by as many as 10 million people. Compulsive hair pulling creates deep shame and loss of self-esteem. While his prayers to stop the urge to pull his hair were never seemingly heard or answered, Gary later recognizes that his prayers were answered in unexpected ways. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book...
Gary Hennerberg's book, Urges, not only offers hope and inspiration for people with trichotillomania, I believe the book is also the first written by a male about his own personal journey with TTM.Gary takes the reader directly into the mind and thinking of someone with TTM, from his first pull as a child to his final chapter he titled Turning Point, which brought tears to my eyes. His honest account of the emotions involved with wanting to pull, his detailed description(s) of buying a hair piece and later, shaving his head, and his deep faith in God that he was created with TTM, are all brought together in a journal-like fashion that not only brings comfort to myself, as I have TTM, but also would enlighten any reader to understand the complex nature of this affliction.I believe many of us will never forget the defining moment we discovered a medical name for what we did, trichotillomania.I highly recommend this book to anyone with TTM or to individuals who wish to learn about TTM.Those individuals, particularly male, that may be so fortunate to find Gary's book in the beginning of their journey will be encouraged to accept who they are and to be content, in spite of TTM.

5-0 out of 5 stars ... sometimes the light of a single candle will dispel the darkness...
I would think the world is unequally divided into two groups, the `majority share' having never heard of the word "Trichotillomania" and having no inkling of what it means... and the other group which can relate to this condition on a very personal level.

The challenge would be how to write a book that will be balanced enough to capture the interest and attention of each of the afore mentioned `groups'. I found this book to be extremely well written, in that it documents the `journey' ofGary from childhood into manhood in such a manner that the book is both an enlightening and entertaining read.

As the pages turn, one by one, you find yourself looking over Gary's shoulder as he makes his way down this path that has been laid out before him. For those dealing with the challenge of`Trich', and the personal questions and fears that are bottled up inside..., this story provides the realization that those same issues are shared by others and that there can be a resolution which can be found. For those just learning about Trich, by the time you finish the journey with Gary... your understanding of this condition will be at a very different level.

It is true that everyone must 'walk their own path' in order to reach their individual destination... but it is also true that, at times, ... `your' path may join others... so for that moment you are on the same section of road.Benefiting from what others have already discovered...can illuminate the path before you as you travel.

This book can be such a `candle' for you...

Product Description

Now in softcover for the first time, the most comprehensive guide to behavioral treatment for these prevalent yet understudied disorders.

As upsetting as they are to clients, tics, trichotillomania, and oral-digital habits such as thumb-sucking and nail-biting tend to be resistant to traditional forms of therapy. The repetitiveness of their actions, however, makes these dissimilar disorders particularly receptive to behavioral treatment. Editors Woods and Miltenberger have assembled 22 therapist/researchers to create a state-of-the-art resource for clinicians challenged by clients with repetitive behavior disorders (RBDs).  This book contains:

• Three complete treatment manuals explaining step-by-step therapy for tic disorders, trichotillomania, and oral-digital RBDs
• Clear rationales for why behavioral methods are so effective for these disorders
• Guidelines for direct and indirect assessment
• Interventions for related RBDs, including bruxism, rumination, pica, and stuttering
• A Separate chapter on treating RBDs in persons with developmental disorders
• Contact information for advocacy and educational groups

Recent studies have established the effectiveness of behavioral treatment for these disorders, and the re-issue of this book will continue to bring this important modality to the fore. While it is especially geared toward practitioners, the contributors have made Tic Disorders relevant to researchers and sufficiently accessible to be recommended to patients and their families as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I understand my daughter's hair-pulling problem much better after reading this book.I never knew it was exacerbated by chastising or threatening.I have focused much more on helping her ease the tension, like massaging her scalp or cuddling with her.It also helps her to exercise her fine motor skills, like working with beads and making bracelets, etc. This book has helped us so much!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful-A Different Perspective
As the parent of a 12 year old suffering from trich I have done a ton of reading on the subject including many in-depth texts and research articles. This book is simple to read and understand and provides something those other books don't:In depth perspective from a trich survivor who also has kids with the disorder. It really helped me to understand how trich feels for my daughter and provided some great insights into parenting a child with trich.Cheryn Salazar mentions her own Chrisitanity once or twice, but I did not feel that she was pushing this as a solution as one reviewer did. This book does not get into detail about meds and behavioral therapy but it gave me great insight into what it feels like to have this disorder and I have not yet found that in any other book/article.I also think this would be a great book to give to friends/family members to help them understand trich in a comprehensive yet simple manner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed and Frustrated
My daughter has trich and I searched for a book to help me deal with this. This book sounded like the best because it is written by a women with trich who is a mother of a child with trich. It sounded perfect. I paid for overnight shipping because I was frantic over the bald spots that were now forming on my beautiful girl's head. The day it arrived I read it cover to cover and have never been more frustrated! The beginning is very good. It gives an overview of trich. That's great, although I already knew most of that from doing online research. However, it is a great introduction for those who have yet to do the research. I kept waiting for a chapter on tips and techniques that help. There was a lot of talk about self esteem and compassionate parenting. In fact, the majority of the book talked about it. That's all fine and great...we should all be parenting that way...but it doesn't get my daughter's hand off of her head! I FINALLY get to where it sounds like the author is going to give advice, and her advice is to get a copy of someone else's book which has great tips on getting your child to stop pulling! WHAT??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I just paid 15 bucks for a book and another 15 for shipping only to be told to buy SOMEONE ELSE'S BOOK!!! What a rip-off. If I ever met the author I would ask for my money back. What a huge disappointment!

Don't waste your money!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book about a little understood disorder.
Cheryn writes this book from her heart.Having suffered from trichotillomania herself as a child and as an adult, and as a parent of a child with trich, she writes with passion, compassion, and first hand knowledge of what it is like to have this disorder.Having suffered in silence for years, she understands the isolation it can cause. And then to have her own children come up with the same disorder, she understands a parent's fears and frustrations.Written from the heart, this book is a must-read for any parent with a child suffering from trichotillomania, and good reading for anybody who either has, or know somebody who has trichotillomania.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents - A MUST!
Parents, Get this book.I have worked with parents of pullers for 10 years. This book answers every question and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Penzel is Excellent
My 11 year old daughter suffers from Trich, and we recently began working with Dr. Penzel. We can't say enough about how knowledgable he is, caring, and what a calming affect he has on the parent. We are frustrated with how difficult this is to treat in a young child, but hopeful that with Dr. Penzel's help, we can manage and overcome it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I have read on the subject
My six year old daughter has been dealing with trich for several months now, and I have read a ton of books and internet sites. Dr. Penzel's book is the most comprehensive and helpful. Despite having only one chapter relating specifically to children, it is an extremely helpful one and the rest of the book is very informative about the disorder in general as well. His suggestions for motivating younger children have been particularly valuable to us. His advice to and compassion for parents of children with trich has been a lifeline for me-whenever I feel hopeless or that I am losing patience I go back and re-read it and it helps me a lot. I can't say this book or anything else has gotten trich under control for us yet (as Dr. Penzel explains, treatment can be difficult with such a young child), but it has definitely given us hope and gone a long way in helping us to cope with the disorder ourselves and not make things worse for our child.

As far as adults go, I don't have trich so I can't really speak to how helpful it would be for adults who do, but I will say that this is the only book I have read that offers lots of actual specific, practical advice in every area from treatment options to medications to diets, supplements and alternative therapies in an non-biased, factually-based manner. It is certainly the only book I have read that lays out a detailed, specific self-treatment plan. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with this difficult disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, educational and covers all the avenues
This book was educational and informative, listing a variety of options and avenues for the possible treatment of Trichotillomania. As a trich patient, I only wish this research and information was available to my parents and myself 36 years ago when I began pulling.Never too late, however, as the behavior modification suggestions and possible medication treatments listed and explored have already started me on my road to controlling my urges and actions.A must read for anyone who may suffer from this disorder, or his or her parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Penzel really understands
This is a great book for those that suffer from Trich and for those that treat it or have a loved one with it.Dr. Penzel has a great knowledge of how suffers feel and I would highly recommend this book to everyone who has been touched by this disorder.Am looking forward to seeing what his next book is.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good and helpful tool for use with my clients
I am using this workbook as a tool with clients who are diagnosed with Trichotillomania and it is the best tool I have found for this purpose.I also have the clinician's guide for my own use in working with the clients. One needs a step-by-step "program" when working with this disorder and the workbook offers that very structured program. One of my clients said it is the perfect accompaniment for her weekly efforts as she attempts to reduce her hair pulling behavior. She likes taking the homework assignments with her as a comforting reminder and guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplifies a very difficult problem
I am currently treating someone with trichotillomania and had nothing to fall back upon but this book. Training in psychiatry does not necessarily include training in acceptance and commitment therapy, nor in habit reversal training which are the two methods used in this book to break a seemingly unbreakable habit. My supervisors also couldn't figure out what to do. Enter Treatments That Work! I love this series for the simple language, for the reduction in anxiety both for me and for my patients that a manualized session-by-session guideline can provide, and basically for the mastery that, after reading this book, I can possess. Check out their other titles - they have books for treating OCD, social phobia, panic disorder, GAD, and specific phobias. All are concise, informative, and incredibly useful, especially when one does not have patients with a lifetime of psychoanalytic therapy covered by insurance. Of note, behavioral approach to treatment of trichotillomania has been found to be most productive when comparison of all available literature had been done in meta-analysis review; be assured this will likely be much more productive, therefore, than psychodynamic approach to treatment of this illness (though it would be my own preference if I had any choice in the matter).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Usefull Concise Guide for treating Trichotillomania
This book is one of the very few books currently in market, written for those therapists, providers, residents and fellows in the field of Psychiatry or Psychology, who are interested in treating Trichotillomania. The book is very nicely categorized into describing different strategies of acceptance and committment therapy, with multiple tables and case vignettes. The workbook associated with this book is also very user friendly for therapists and patients alike. I would highly recommend this book and the associated workbook for every practitioner who wants to learn the basics of acceptance and committment therapy in the treatment of trichotillomania. ... Product Description

There is still scant clinical information on trichotillomania. This book fills the need for a full-length cognitive-behavioral treatment manual. The authors share their considerable expertise in treating body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (not only hair-pulling but skin-picking and nail-biting as well) in an accessible, clinically valid reference. This is the first comprehensive, clinical, and empirically-based volume to address these disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anybody who suffers from trichotillomania
This is the first book I read on the subject of trichotillomania, and I felt as if Cheryn were talking to me personally.I cried tears of relief to know that others had this disorder, and that they shared so much in common with me.Trichotillomania is a disorder of isoaltion and secrecy. That is almost worst than the hair pulling itself. This book truly helped me to understand that I was not alone, and to know that others felt the same way and had gone through many of the same things.Cheryn is personable, sincere, compassionate and loving, and this book will reach out and touch any body who reads it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for trichotillomania sufferers!
I bought this book a couple of years ago and it immediately gave me hope and success with my lash/brow pulling; Cheryn and I talked via email many times and she is a wonderful, caring person and it helps to have someone to talk with about this disorder. The book is a MUST for anyone suffering from trichotillomania.I cannot understand why anyone would give the book less than five stars.Buy it, read it, and read it again and again when you pull again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Changed My Life!
I read Cheryn's book when I first discovered I was not the only one (about 2 years ago).It was so comforting to hear her personal struggle with trichotillomania, and I was amazed by how much of it paralleled my own life.I experienced the full range of emotions while reading-- from laughing out loud to sobbing.Knowing that I was not alone gave me the courage to go seek (and find!) the help I needed.Cheryn truly helped me to change my life.I recently had the honor of meeting her in person; she's absolutely one of the most amazing women ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest book I ever read
I only found out a couple of years ago that trichotillomania is not really a rare disorder.....I have had it for 34 years. I read Cheryn's book and I have to admit that upon reading the poem on the first page, I cried so much I couldn't read the rest of the book until the next day. It was so incredible to find out others shared my secret and Cheryn did a wonderful job of putting it into words, which must have been really hard, since none of us want to talk about it.I also think it's a great book for anyone to read because Cheryn is an inspiration!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have trich, read this book
If you or someone you know suffers with trichotillomania, this book offers very helpful insights from a personal sufferer. I know this firsthand as I also have trich. While reading Cheryn's accounts of her struggles with this condition, I felt like I had found a long-lost friend, as I shared so many of the same emotional and social snags associated with it. But more than a simple account of growing up with a very trying and persistant handicap, Cheryn invites the reader to accept the condition for what it can bring sufferers in a positive light. As she explains, for those who have trich, the challenge of continually learning to accept oneself as a whole person is magnified, but this can lead to some wonderful opportunities to grow in ways that only other sufferers can know. And this leads to the most rewarding aspect -- that of being able to share your feelings and experiences with others like you. Because as Cheryn succinctly puts it, "You are not alone." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Are you ready for a challenge?
I haven't finished this book yet, but I think it's important to review this book at this time because I think there are probably a lot of people out there who, like me, started reading this book and put it down because their current beliefs about Trichotillomania were challenged and it made them uncomfortable. It made me uncomfortable too.

But you need to keep reading the book.Is Rohrer right? Is Trich all in our head? You know what....what if she is?!?! What if our current beliefs are directly responsible for this endless cycle of pulling, guilt, shame, and more pulling? Are we so determined to close our minds to this idea that we're willing to risk freedom?I don't know if I'll end my pulling forever if I continue reading this book and following the exercises. What I do know is that it has challenged me the way nothing else has.And I think our natural resistance to challenge and change is indicative of the reasons so many of us are still asking the same questions and still making very little progress.Throw rocks at me if you want, but you owe it to yourself to take a deep look inside and figure out what it is that's really eating at you.Even if it turns out this theory doesn't work for you, I bet you'll make significant strides in getting to know yourself better. And you can only benefit from that.

The book is a comfortable read.Rohrer is a peer, and addresses you as such. The first few pages were difficult for me because of my natural resistence to "self-help" books, but the content itself is not difficult. The challenge it presents is purely emotional, and will vary depending on your own level of willingness to participate in your own healing.

The interesting thing about the Trich community is that we will try almost anything to find a "cure" for Trichotillomania. Some of us try medication. Some try therapy. Some try special diets. Some try habit reversal.Do these things work?Sure, to some extent. But inside you is a person who desperately needs to pull, and tells you so almost every day.Have you ever sat down with her and asked her why?Rohrer does. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to give to a hair pulling teen
Sometimes the stress of being a teen can be a little overwhelming. This empathetic book will help teens feel that they are not alone, and help them begin to heal their compulsion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Ms. Rohrer has been where all children and teens with Trichotillomania have been. She validates the Truth of the reader by honestly stating what contributed to the onset of Trichotillomania for her. Ms. Rohrer is articulate and touches the reader by her approach to healing. Stronger than Steel, Braver than Crazy, in simple words conveys that our Truth, perceptions and feelings are to be acknowledged before any healing can happen. It depicts how by taking responsibility for her own feelings and perceptions Ms. Rohrer was able to walk the path to complete freedom from Trichotillomania - which the medical community hails as incurable.

If you come across this review, please give this message a chance as this may mean a new beginning of life for you. It has for me. I thank Ms. Rohrer for her commitment to those with with Trichotillomania. I am inspired by her commitment to healing and helping those in shame and hopelessness due to Trichotillomania. Why believe something disempowering that Trichotillomania cannot be healed? Why not give a message of hope and healing a chance instead? Would that not add more value to life rather than giving away one's power to the medical community?

Healing from Trichotillomania is more than possible!

Bring it on Abby :D! The world is waiting with her arms wide open! No one can stop this revolution now!
