Description:
We hypothesized that women with Turner syndrome (45,X) with a single X-chromosome inherited from their mother may show mentalizing deficits compared to women of normal karyotype with two X-chromosomes (46,X). Simple geometrical animation events (two triangles moving with apparent intention in relation to each other) which usually elicit mental-state descriptions in normally developing people, did not do so to the same extent in women with Turner syndrome. We then investigated the potential role in this deficit played by monoamine oxidase B enzymatic activity. MAO-B activity reflects central serotonergic activity, and by implication the functional integrity of neural circuits implicated in mentalizing. Platelet MAO-B was substantially reduced in Turner syndrome. However, contrary to prediction, in this (relatively small) sample there was no association between MAO-B enzymatic activity and mentalizing skills in participants with and without Turner syndrome. ... Product Description

In the summer of 1976, during their annual retreat on Cape Cod, the McKotch family came apart. Now, twenty years after daughter Gwen was diagnosed with Turner's syndrome—a rare genetic condition that keeps her trapped forever in the body of a child—eminent scientist Frank McKotch is divorced from his pedigreed wife, Paulette. Eldest son Billy, a successful cardiologist, lives a life built on secrets and compromise. His brother Scott awakened from a pot-addled adolescence to a soul-killing job and a regrettable marriage. And Gwen—bright and accomplished but hermetic and emotionally aloof—spurns all social interaction until, well into her thirties, she falls in love for the first time. With compassion and almost painful astuteness, The Condition explores the power of family mythologies—the self-delusions, denials, and inescapable truths that forever bind fathers and mothers and siblings.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Perspective
Visiting my daughter, a creative writing major at U Maine Farmington, I picked up this book over the long weekend visit; assigned reading for her course.

Familiar to the Massachusetts landscape of Wellesley College, Cape Cod, MIT, Harvard, Boston, etc. its settings were comfortable. I had never heard of Jennifer Haigh or the condition called "Turner's Syndrome," seemingly the last straw--so to speak--that broke the family's marriage and began the book's odyssey as it follows the tracks of Billy, (the older brother who is gay), Scott, (the youngest who just doesn't care), Gwen, (the non-demonstrative girl with Turner's), Frank, (the dad who seems to be the character with whom Ms Haigh finds the most affinity); ie: she transmits that to the reader, and Paulette, the inflexible, "That's the way it was done in my family for generations so it has to be right," mother from whom Frank is divorced.

So there you have it. Throughout the book we follow the lives of each player, their day to day relationships, jobs and, once or twice a year--if that--their relationships to one another. The only character with whom the reader feels an affinity is Frank. We like him. He confronts Gwen's differences, examines, explores. He's virile, sensual, a woman's man.

His wife may be inflexible, narrow, but we feel no affinity for her. I would like it if Ms Haigh could have, somehow, brought us under Paulette's skin to perceive why she felt the way she did. At the beginning we understand that Paulette perceives her husband's elaborate gifts as, "less for her than for himself," and in his sexual advances with little overture he is self-absorbed and she is left cold. Her reactions are understandable, but we need more.

Far be it from anyone to find fault in a 400 page book that drew together the lives of five people over decades, but I would like to have seen each of their worlds from the inside out rather than being an observer. What were their inner worlds, their thoughts, emotions, sexual longings, unfulfilled dreams and what is the ultimate realization of this journey?

Perhaps I'll read it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Book
It's hard to come across a novelist these days who can write an engrossing story with such depth of character and research. I read this book after reading the much acclaimed "The Help," which I found shallow and poorly researched in comparison toJennifer Haigh's "The Condition."I plan to buy her other books and look forward to reading them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Family dynamics are palpable and "the condition" of being human draws you in
This story of pain, beauty, sickness and health, love and betrayal revolves around the McKotch family, a flawed but very real New England family dealing with the realities of life. The characters are so well developed in this book that you can feel their pain, and hope they make it, even when you can barely stand the choices they make. The family dynamics are palpable and "the condition" of being human draws you in. This would be a good book discussion choice. The author, Jennifer Haigh, is an exceptional writer and I have enjoyed her previous two books (Mrs. Kimble (P.S.) and Baker Towers: A Novel) and would recommend them too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Captivating but mostly skims the surface
I enjoyed The Condition. It held my interest. But when I finished, and asked myself what it illuminated, I found myself with a confused, rather empty feeling. So much happens, and to so many characters. Part of the problem is that too much of what transpires could be soap opera material, but an even larger problem is that we get only so far with each character and some major event in their life and then we move on. We move on too quickly, and then when we become involved in the new character and new plot, we move on again. I liked the characters enough to want more, which is a good thing, but did not feel that I got more, which is a disappointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Simply unreadable!
I agree with those who have said this book was not really about "the condition".There was not nearly enough focus on what I assumed would be the main character, the daughter who had Turner's Syndrome.Instead, we got what was nearly minute by minute details about all the other members of this dysfunctional, and strangely uninteresting, family. Couldn't begin to finish it...one of the most boring and pointless books I've ever attempted to read. ... Read more

With insightful discussion of program evaluation and the efforts of the Centers for Disease Control, this book presents a set of clear-cut recommendations to help ensure that the substantial resources devoted to the fight against AIDS will be used most effectively. This expanded edition of "Evaluating AIDS Prevention Programs" covers evaluation strategies and outcome measurements, including a realistic review of the factors that make evaluation of AIDS programs particularly difficult. Randomized field experiments are examined, focusing on the use of alternative treatments rather than placebo controls. The book also reviews nonexperimental techniques, including a critical examination of evaluation methods that are observational rather than experimental - a necessity when randomized experiments are infeasible. ... In candid, in-depth interviews, gay men discuss their experiences in the age of AIDS, their attitudes toward sex, and their motives for engaging in behaviors that are widely considered to be dangerous health risks. Revealing that such factors as guilt for being HIV negative, alcohol and drug use, and low self-esteem are possible causes of continuing dangerous sexual behavior, Turner also recommends ways to promote safer sex while respecting the choices and judgments of gay men.Amazon.com Review
Why some gay men find it easier to have safe sex than others is a question faced by educators and researchers. Dwayne C.Turner's Risky Sex profiles seven gay men ages 30 to 44 inan effort to understand the myriad influences that go into making decisionsabout sexual activity. While Risky Sex offers new, and often controversialinsights (Turner believes educators should strive toward the more reasonablegoal of risk reduction rather than elimination), the power and strength ofthe book resides in its author's enormously empathetic and beautifully writtendescriptions of the complexities and diversity of gay men's lives andexperiences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for those who want to understand our kids
As the mother of two children with autism, who has been in the battle for more than a decade and probably read 100+ books on the topic, I can say that this one is a gem.Chantal knows her stuff, from educational advocacy to biomedical interventions. She has worked hard to understand autism from her son's perspective and shares those insights with us.In this book, she asks the important and difficult questions and gives us thoughtful, straight-forward answers.

For parents of a child with autism, this is a great gift for aides, teachers, relatives and friends because it will give them a better understanding of your child. No two children with autism are the same but there are many common challenges for them and their families. This book is a way to lay a foundation of understanding.

I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source with simple answers to complex questions!
As a psychology student and working with a young adult with autism I have to say this book is the best guide for both people familiar and unfamiliar with autism. I like this book because it gives simple answers to complex questions. Autism is really complicated and hard to explain to people, but this book is a good source for me to have about autism in general. People ask me things likewhy the young man I work with acts a certain way, or why transitionsare so difficult for him, what causes autism, orwhat the effects on the family are. I don't have all the answers, but this book does!! I recommend if for people in the community who want to know more about autism, or students studying psychology. It's really an easy reference book full of interesting information that creates a better understanding of autism. Highly recommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Chantal - I want this one in my waiting room
Chantal Sicile Kira's new guide for understanding autism and related disorders is a clear-eyed opinion from a front line mother who has led her son and family through the jungle of diagnosis and intervention, despair and hope, while penning for the rest of us her experiences and offering easy to digest bite sized pieces of her hard fought wisdom.

The field of autism and autism intervention is full of controversy, and Chantal's experiences, opinions, and advice are bound to spark healthy discussion which in itself is a real strength of her writing. For those who know her, Chantal is more than a mom and writer.Chantal has become an effective community leader at local state and national levels in addressing the needs of people with autism, their families and the complex systems of intervention and education surrounding them, and this work lends a depth and breadth that distinguishes her books from other parent-written books on autism.

This is Chantal's view of things, from supporting parents to follow their instincts and advocate for their children to urging them to assess for themselves the many possible approaches to intervention. There are many pearls in this slim book.Among them, Chantal's piece on family stress gives families an opportunity to step back, think, and plan better for the many and varied challenges that come up with their children and with all the broader collateral challenges that emerge for nearly every family.

Throughout the book, Chantal looks at these challenges from many aspects: the family, people outside the family, and, always refreshing, from the point of view of the person with autism.Chantal's ability to share her awareness and respect for everyone involved is reason enough to buy this book.

Thanks, Chantal for this book and for all you do!
