Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A433243. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Hyperspectral imaging spectrometers produce an image, comprised of the standard two dimensional spatial scene and the corresponding spectra of each scene. Hyperspectral imaging is a relatively new and fast growing field with both commercial and military applications. Commercial applications vary from vegetation identification and mapping, surface geological identification and mapping to atmospheric composition and mapping. Military applications include target identification and classification, airborne chemical identification and mapping, and rocket plume identification. This thesis describes the design and operation of the NPS Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (NUVIS). NUVIS is a hyperspectral imaging spectrometer designed to investigate the ultraviolet region of the spectrum. NUVIS is comprised of a scanning mirror, telescope assembly using an off axis parabolic mirror, a slit, a flat field imaging diffraction grating, an image intensified camera assembly, and the support controlling electric and electronic hardware and software. This is part a continuing project to build, test and use this sensor in support of military and government agencies. ... Read more

Product Description
This guide has been designed to assist with goat health care problems in areas that have limited veterinary services. The basic aim is simple: you should be able to recognize a sick goat in the early stages of the disease process. The handbook is divided into five major sections: 1) The Diagnostic Guides will help you to easily identify a small number of diseases. 2) The detailed Disease Descriptions will allow you to reduce the number of potential diseases even further, provide appropriate treatment, and take preventive measures to avoid spread. 3) The section on Therapy describes many of the antibiotics and other drugs that are used in the treatment of goat diseases. 4) Techniques of treatment are described and illustrated. 5) The section on Birth and Newborn describes the procedures for both normal and difficult delivery, with illustrations. It also covers pre- and post-delivery care. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Gives a Good Overview of the Gold Rush
Reason for Reading: Read aloud to my 9yo as part of our history curriculum.

As others from this series of like books from Greenwood and Collins an historical fiction tale is interspersed with non-fiction sections that expound upon information presented within the fictional story. While other books contained crafts in the non-fiction sections this book can't really be said to have crafts, there are a couple of experiments, a card game, a recipe and recommended reading instead.

Another difference is that rather than being about a family as in the Pioneer books and the Underground Railroad book, this book features in on two orphaned brothers: one almost a man, the other 13 years old, Tim. Tim narrates the story and tells of how he and his brother head on out for the great stampede north to Dawson City where they aim to make their fortune. Greenwood has presented a very realistic tale of all the hardships experienced along the way, though she does stay away from any of the grizzly details. She tells of the trials of the Chilkoot Pass, the river, the lawlessness before reaching Canada where the Mounties ruled with an iron fist and the backbreaking, often hopeless working a claim. The characters in this book seem to have more than the average share of good luck but still it comes out an entertaining and informational book on the topic. Particularly nice in this book, over the others, is the inclusion of real photographs which adds even more reality to the story. A good beginning book on the topic with plenty of information to get a good overview of the Gold Rush. Not my favourite of the series though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold Rush Fever
This is about two boys named Tim and Roy living with their aunt Ravhel. All of a sudden they discover that there is a gold rush going on in the Yukon. When they got there, they had to climb and climb until they reached the golden stairs. Then they had two choices, White Pass or the Chilkoot Pass. They took the Chilkoot Pass because it was longer but it was safer. Then they reached Lake Lindeman. They had to form a group and build a boat at to get to Lake Bennett. They reached Lake Bennett in one peice then they found the town Dawson. They tried searching for gold but had no luck. They got a claim. They struck it rich, they only had enough to get home and have a little left for their aunt Rachel to see. So they went home happy and content as can be. Read this book it will take you back to the time of the gold rushes.

Product Description
In this account, a journalist traces the course of yellow fever, stopping in 1878 Memphis to "vividly [evoke] the Faulkner-meets-'Dawn of the Dead' horrors,"*-and moving on to today's strain of the killer virus.

Over the course of history, yellow fever has paralyzed governments, halted commerce, quarantined cities, moved the U.S. capital, and altered the outcome of wars. During a single summer in Memphis alone, it cost more lives than the Chicago fire, the San Francisco earthquake, and the Johnstown flood combined.

In 1900, the U.S. sent three doctors to Cuba to discover how yellow fever was spread. There, they launched one of history's most controversial human studies. Compelling and terrifying, The American Plague depicts the story of yellow fever and its reign in this country-and in Africa, where even today it strikes thousands every year. With "arresting tales of heroism,"** it is a story as much about the nature of human beings as it is about the nature of disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Yellow Fever Epidemic and Walter Reed
Very simply, a good book. I've read other things about the yellow fever epidemic that struck Memphis in 1878, but this is the first book that tells how the entire population of the city was changed because of it. The author even asserts that the power and strength that had been in Memphis shifted to Atlanta because of the yellow fever epidemic that killed so many people and almost destroyed Memphis.
She also provides a lot of inforamtion regarding how the epidemic that struck Memphis and other points up and down the Mississippi River also led to the work of Dr. Walter Reed that led to the understanding the mosquito that can carry disease.
More could be said, but just read the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Book

This book traces the history of the Yellow Fever virus in America from its origins to its current status in modern medicine. The majority of this story revolves around two geographical areas. The first area is Memphis, Tennessee which was basically decimated by Yellow Fever in the late 1800s and the second is Cuba, where doctors from the United States gathered to study the virus and attempt to find a vaccine. Following the stories of some of the people who survived the epidemic as well as some of those who didn't, the author effectively portrays the devastation that the virus wreaked not only on the individuals directly impacted but also on the surrounding inhabitants who lived in constant fear of the invisible cause of grotesque, painful death.

Overall, the story is a fascinating tale of how suffering, perseverance, ignorance, pride, politics and commerce all come into play in how a virus is spread or contained and how decisions in arenas that have nothing to do with medicine or health can directly impact the health of a nation. At times the story seems to stall or drag, but the chronological approach that the author takes in telling the tale seemingly demands these moments of academic argument and political posturing, which had a tremendous impact on the lives of thousands of people. If you have an interest in medicinal history or just a curiosity about how Yellow Fever has impacted America, this book is worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and thought provoking
Our book club group recently read this book as our monthly selection. The unanimous decision was that it was very interesting and thought provoking. We felt it brought many historical facts to light that many of us were not aware of before and put them into context. Our group especially appreciated the author's attention to detail and that she noted her sources for the information she crafted into her narrative. We had the great fortune to meet in Elmwood Cemetery and see some of the gravesites of the people featured in the book.In addition, Molly Caldwell Crosby joined us for our discussion and it was great to hear first hand how carefully she researched the facts and information that were included in this book. She seems to be a dedicated writer of historical narrative and we look forward to the next topic she brings to life.If history books were written like this, we might all know more about our past!

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but unfocused
Steven Patterson's review is accurate. It's probably decent for a first novel, but reads in a disjointed manner. I believe this disjointedness may be attempts to place historicalin the book, but it fails at this, although does provide interesting tidbits of unrelated info now and then.
I also found myself wondering Yellow Fevers actual and percied importance versus other more well-known epidemic diseases of the times, such as malaria. I found that it is likely a lot of what I "knew" as purely malarial epidemics, may have also included yellow fever, but this book largely has the reverse problem of focused only on yellow fever without context to other diseases.
All in all, non-fiction for the masses still needs a coherent storyline, and at its best places the story in historical context, and this book did not astoundingly succeed at this.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simply Stunning Read
I have written 10 books and carefully select the ones I read since I read over 100 a year.Hence, I was slightly leery of reading this book because of William Johnson's earlier review that suggested, among other things, that "Crosby's random jumping from scene to scene, however, creates a sense of disjointedness that detracts from the book's interest. One gets the impression that what she really wanted to write was a book about "Memphis," not one about yellow fever."

However, I needed additional Yellow Fever material for a presentation I am giving twice next month at major Silicon Valley enterprises. So, I decided to peruse it to see if I could at least glean any useful perspectives.I am so glad I did and read it completely in two sittings.

This is a magnificent book. The research looks genuine and exhaustive. Its pace is fast and even and the several contexts flow smoothly.I particularly appreciated its occasional historical tidbits - Napoleon's army in Haiti, the Galveston hurricane, etc.- that set the story into a larger historical perspective.

Yes, Memphis is highlighted - but, correctly so.In many ways, Memphis was ground zero for a little-remembered medical holocaust (think piles of bones above "green pools").I was certainly unaware of what happened there.Sadly, much of it repeated in other cities during the 1918 influenza.

The author beautifully describes the unrelenting horror of Yellow Fever infection with little seemingly left to the imagination. Yet, it is done as discreetly as possible with sensitivity and taste. You get a real ringside seat on this one. Wow, hang on.

Reading this book left me genuinely chastened. It seems clear that Yellow Fever will return again. And again. And again.

Two parting thoughts:

1. Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.
2. Those that cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professional Review by "Children's Literature"
Young Andrew Hart turns out to be a bright and helpful companion for his father as the pair join thousands of men seeking gold in Canada. The short story has a happy ending thanks not to the discovery of gold, but to Hart's resourcefulness. The story pays tribute to the Native Canadians who helped the gold seekers make their difficult trek. Five story chapters are followed by four chapters of straight history about this "last great gold rush," including the impact of the 1893 depression as well as the hazards of getting to the gold rush town of Dawson and actually finding gold. The text is large and almost every page has an ink drawing or photograph. A note about Jack London indicates that he too crossed the Chilkoot Pass and traveled to Dawson. He drew on those experiences for his novel "The Call of the Wild." A short glossary is included at the end. This is a high-interest tale about a dramatic saga in American history. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NO Ma'am
I boring read.I got grossed out during the beginning of the book.I figured the book would be a great read if the author developed the plot.Well of course it wasn't.I think the book belongs at the bottom of a trash can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stranger than Fiction
This was a very strange novel but refreshing in its metaphor and beauty. It reminded me of "The Metamorphosis" a novel written by Fran Kafta where a man turns himself into a insect after being abused and taken advantage of by his indifferent family and company where he was employed. Reading this book made me suspect that the author himself sought to save himself from the everyday insults of being black and gay by giving birth to a new life, hopefully, freed from the racism of the straight world, indifference from the gay white world and benigh neglect from members of his own race and class. I only wish there were more writers like this guy around creating literate that is not afraid to go beyond "Dick and Jane" fiction and challenge conventional belief. My hat goes off to Mr. Owens for a job well done. I'm sure somewhere, the late great writer, James Baldwin is saying, "You go Brother!"

1-0 out of 5 stars Where can you find a Zero rating when you need one?
There are some novels that you know from the first page will be a waste of time.Promising writers can manage to entice a reader to hang in there after the first ten to fifteen pages, mediocre writers might take sixteen to twenty pages to do it while the abysmally untalented could trick you into false hope within the first chapter; but when you know from the first five pages that a story has taken off, crashed, burned, and ready for burial, well I don't know what type of writer could do that. Not much interested in spending any time writing about the "plot" or "characters" as this story is so implausible and the writing so puerile that it doesn't warrant in-depth review (that would falsely imply that there was some depth to the novel). Jeffery Mingo's review below is more analysis than the novel deserves and I agree with him completely. I can't believe I paid full price for this dreck!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Song of A Manchild
I read and then re-read Durrell Owens groundbreaking novel. The Song of a Manchild is a great book that exemplifies magnificent creativity in imaginary fiction writing. The story line is so engaging and thought provoking, you begin to visualize the story as being a possible reality. It's humor is so funny it makes you laugh, it's spiritual context is uplifting, and the rebirth is triumphant.

I was moved by Mr. Owens narrative powers as a writer in this book. The dialogue, pace, tone, and tenor of the book reminds me of the way fiction is written by other great famous fiction writers.

Additionally, it's not a wonder that The Song of a Manchild was nominated by Lambea as best male gay fiction.I wish more fiction stories can be produced with such conviction as Mr. Owens has shown in his novel.

I believe Durrell Owens is well on his way of becoming one of the best known fiction writers of the 21st century.
