A Homepage for New ( And Not So New ) Math Teachers This homepage was created to give new math teachers ideas and suggestions to help with their teaching. Even though I've been teaching for more than twenty years, I do not have all the answers. My first advice to anyone starting in teaching is to be careful of those who claim they know the perfect method of teaching. Teaching is an on-going learning experience. You will be challenged to use many approaches and methodologies. You must keep a balance between teaching skills, concepts and problem solving. Children learn mathematics in different ways and at different rates. What is often forgotten in math education is what is most important: You , the teacher . The way you present your lesson involves all of you and the connections you make with your students. Your honesty, your beliefs in what you do, the climate you create in your classroom, truly carry your lesson. These are the elements you bring into the classroom which are most remembered by your students. Also, when you take time to see math as your students see it, you will become a better math teacher. It is time in educational reform that we focus on the qualities of good teachers and not just good programs.

Extractions: Reston, VA, September 30, 2002—The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) with its local host, the Saskatchewan Mathematics Teachers' Society (SMTS), will hold a regional conference, "Making Mathematical Connections–2002 and Beyond," in Regina, Saskatchewan, October 17-19. The Saskatchewan society of math teachers has nearly 750 members and is one of more than 250 NCTM Affiliates located in the United States and Canada. It has organized a conference offering nationally known speakers from all provinces of Canada and across the United States. The 3-day conference will draw teachers, administrators, curriculum planners, and teacher educators from preschool through university level from around the region to exchange ideas on how students learn mathematics and what are the best teaching practices. Nearly 150 sessions and workshops will be offered to challenge educators to think about old problems in new ways. In the opening session, Ron Lancaster, an independent mathematics consultant from Hamilton, Ontario, will speak on "Connecting Mathematics with Art" on Thursday, October 17, at 8:00 a.m. in the Delta Regina Hotel. In his address, Lancaster will use material from a popular art tour he created for the National Gallery in Ottawa that highlights the mathematics found in art, architecture, and design elements.

It discourages students from participating. Critical thought and honest effort are more important than correct answers. There is no teaching without control of your class. It is better to fall behind by a day or two early in the year than to have an uphill battle all year long over behavior. Avoid talking over your students. If there is too much noise, sometimes the best thing to do is to stop talking. (I am famous for the "Glosser Glare".) Routine and structure are good, but too much of it can cause you and your class to fall into a rut. Try to vary activities from time to time. Encourage active participation from your students. From time to time, call students to the board, or allow them to work in groups. Avoid giving only teacher-directed lessons. (See our article on Cooperative Learning Techniques Try to be flexible. Math can be a rigid topic. But you don't have to be. For example, I have a strict rule against chewing gum. But I close my eyes to it during a test.

Many teachers reading the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' (NCTM's) Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) and Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics (1991) get excited about the possibilities for new kinds of instruction just as they are also bogged down by the overwhelming expectations about how they should provide that instruction. Within the complex description these two volumes provide about what teachers should do and how they should act, ten basic metaphors seem to emerge about new teacher roles. Some of these roles may feel fairly comfortable to some of you, and other roles may remind you just how hard it is to live up to you own ideals as a teacher. The teacher as architect: Architects create the environment in which we live and work-both the buildings and the feelings they evoke. Similarly, the teacher as architect creates the learning environment for students. From the arrangement of furniture that facilitates discussion, thought and exploration, to the feeling students experience when they walk into the classroom, the teacher establishes an atmosphere where mathematics and learning are important. Most of all, the teacher creates a place where students feel safe to take risks and share ideas, while learning to value the opinions of each other.
