5-0 out of 5 stars I agree with all the other Reviews about the Brain Games book of Brain Teasers etc.
I agree with all the other Reviews about the Brain Games book of Brain Teasers etc. This book is thought provoking and tells you a lot about puzzles etc. and how to solve games and stuff. This is not for someone who just wants to solve a bunch of puzzles during a flight, trip, or something. This is more of an encyclopedia type book on how to solve problems and questions and stimulate your brain by developing your own creativity and stuff. You will get games and stuff, but not just games, if that makes sense. Also there is a revised version that has the table of contents hyper-linked and better navigation if you don't mind paying the xtra 2 bucks, just look for the same book with the starburst picture on the cover. Otherwise it's the same book.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book to make math fun
The best thing about this book: my child likes it! He likes the activities and has learned a lot in the process. The colorful pictures and rewards attracted his attention. He seldom does anything for that long.

With his interest aroused by this book, we also let my son do some formal math (such as the excellent weekly math at Beestar.org). The two sides combined make a solid, systematic learning. As an interest-provoking activity book, this one does a fine job. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent education series...keeps the kids busy for hours!
This was the first book out of this series that I purchased for my 6 year old son who was bored in school. I now own over 13 books in this series, which I use for my 6 year old and 4 year old. The books are excellent education workbooks. They contain literally hundreds of pages of learning activites. The pages are very interesting (even I have learned some new things!),colorful and creative. My son particularly enjoys the many math board games included in this workbook. It is an excellent and fun way to practice math skills. My children sit for hours in the afternoon and on weekends doing these workbooks...they don't even realize that they are really doing "schoolwork"! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Game for Teaching Simple Addition and Subtraction
My daughter, who has just turned four, was immediately excited when we opened this pack of cards. She's recently developed an intense interest in math, and we've been trying to find toys and games that would support in her new-found interest in a constructive way. This little game is a perfect learning tool, with the added excitement of being a mildly competitive luck-based game.

The cards only contain single digit numbers and the winning or losing answer is never greater than a value of 10. This is perfect for the beginner level that she is at. We also bought her an abacus recently and that's proved to be a perfect compliment to understanding these cards. She joyfully works out her answers with the abacus, and the abacus assists her in getting the correct answer every time.

The premise of the game is a familiar one to most, and the rounds end so quickly that there are plenty of opportunities for each player to score a luck-based win. Considering the learning-based premise of it, I think that's important. I want her knowledge and understanding to increase, not for her to feel it's something that has a 'failure' stigma attached. Of course, the gameplay is slowed by her need to perform calculation, but I predict that over time she will begin to recognize similarities in the problems and be able to solve them without the aid of the abacus - that is, if she doesn't simply memorize the problems and corresponding answers first.

As an added bonus, the company (School Zone) who manufactures these cards does so in the USA, a rarity these days, but this pleases me as we've been trying to avoid products manufactured by slave labor in third world countries. The cards themselves are attractive enough, with happy little children adorning each. And, of course, the price is right.

I'd highly recommend these to anyone with youngsters developing an interest in mathematics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Game
This is a great game.My 7 year old likes it.It is a big help with this times tables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does the job, the kids love it.
I bought these to use as an assessment tool and practice for my students. It showed me that they needed more work than I had expected on their basic addition and subtraction facts with numbers up to 9, and has helped me measure their progress after each week of instruction. Plus they enjoy playing it, and ask to use it during free time sometimes. The cards are nice and big and sturdy, easy to handle. For the price, this can't be beat.

2-0 out of 5 stars //#7 Retreove coordSets va;ies amd write a table
The title of the review is extracted from a comment line in a program presented in chapter 4.I hate to start a review complaining about errors, but I don't know why the example program text in the book could not get the ++ operator right (after chapter one it turned into + +).The errors in the book are annoying maybe more is expected from a book that states "...every program is explained in intricate detail, so if you are a beginner, you stand an excellent chance of being able to progress through the book without much difficulty."I don't think it makes a good impression to beginner's to show them programs that will not compile because of the syntax errors (+ + or missing brackets).I have managed to collect several pages of errors in the book.I can't make up my mind which was worse -- text not matching programs being discussed (wrong function arguments, equations), the syntax errors in the book, or programs in the book not matching program on the CD.

The authors even managed to mangle the rule for determining if a graph represents a function.
FROM THE BOOK:
"One way to test a function is to apply the horizontal line rule. This rule involves drawing horizontal lines at any point along the x axis of the Cartesian plane on which you have plotted the values of a function. If the line crosses the line or curve at only one point, then you are dealing with a valid function."

Well, the good news is the author(s) finally get the definition right by Chapter 6 page 25 (after two wrong attempts). They refer to the "vertical line test."

I wondered who was the technical editor for the book that would let so many errors in the text get by them, well it appears it may have been a relative. I wonder if they bothered to actually read the book. There was at least one major error in every chapter.I think the authors should provide an errata sheet...or maybe it would be too embarrassing.

Lastly, the authors were lazy in their examples. Rather than creating one program to demonstrate profit/loss and another for conversion from Fahrenheit degrees to Celsius degrees, they literally re-use the same program using variables for temperature conversion for profit and loss. This is how they compact things...they combine several programs into one....with the reader having to comment out or remove comments to keep up.

The book suffers from poor typesetting (if in fact that accounts for the syntactically incorrect programs and poor references to classes and methods) and poor choice of samples that really belong in a book titled "Don't program like this..."

The title of this review was not accident is a prime example of what you will get with this book.

My final two cents: I purchased this book for consideration as a supplement or recommendation when I teach a game design course.I can safely say ...not this edition. ... Read more

Product Description
Math Games Played with Cards and Dice (4-6) is the third book in the Galaxy Series of supplementary mathematics materials. This is written as a source book for teachers and parents and is aimed at improving the basic skills of upper elementary school students. It contains a wide variety of games and puzzles to challenge learners of all ability levels in performing the basic arithmetic operations, use of the metric system, probability, and some pre-algebra concepts.Math Games Played with Cards and Dice (4-6) provides motivating mathematics games and puzzles that are supplementary to any basal mathematics program. It is not a self-contained mathematics curriculum. Its materials are designed with the entire range of learners in mind. Each game contains variations that present challenges for students who are able to probe more deeply into the activities presented. Classroom testing of these games and activities has consistently demonstrated that students enjoy them, are motivated by them and master basic skills through their use. Answers and comments are provided for many of the activities in the last section of this book. This book requires little more than standard playing cards, standard dice, meter sticks, and common classroom materials for successful use. Calculators can be useful in some activities, though they are not required. When customized dice are required, a non-permanent marker may be used to doctor the faces of the standard dice. The entire Galaxy Series conforms to the Mathematics Focal Points recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as well as most state standards. The books also help prepare students for testing programs that are mandated under state and federal statutes.Thank you for using the supplementary mathematics materials of IPMG Publishing! ... This book is very easy to use and can be utilized at a moment's notice as long as you have cards and dice. If you don't have cards, they have a set of reproducible cards in the back of the book! The contents list includes the skills used in each game which make it very easy to align with curriculum and/or standards. There are a variety of concepts used in this book and each can be adapted to a variety of abilities. What better way to learn math than by having fun?!?! Let's Make 14 is an excellent game to help students work with probability by finding mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation. It could be used with older students as well. It's Your Call and 3 Ways to Win are very fun ways of working with expected winnings. I loved the Stacking Dice game which worked with addition of whole numbers. This is a perfect companion to any math textbook!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not A Game In Sight
This book has explanations of how math works but does not contain MATH GAMES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL. It has sections titled "Math Camp" that give example questions for the concepts discussed earlier in the chapter. No middle schooler I have ever taught (in over 25 years of classroom experience) would consider doing word problems a 'game'. Practicing math facts and skills needs to be motivating for all students but for middle school students in particular it is a challenge to find a game that they want to play that also teaches them. The Math Camp format is not that. The title of this book is misleading. If you are looking for practice questions and techniques for teaching specific skills, it would be moderately helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book should be called Math No-Games
There is not one game in the whole book, just a "how to do math" book. Not at all what the title says!

1-0 out of 5 stars A disservice to Mario Salvadori
I knew the late Mario Salvadori and have been a fan of his work. This is obviously a hack job with some of his ideas, then his name slapped on the cover to make it saleable. This book is a train wreck: old problems, no math games to speak of, and it reads like an abbreviated middle school textbook. This is a terrible book and an insult to Mr. Salvadori's memory.

If you want a genuine math book for middle schoolers, look to Harold Jacobs' Mathematics: A Human Endeavor, which after 40 years is still the best general interest math book with humor and insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math's Little Book of Why
After reading some of the reviews on this book, I just had to respond with a review of my own.
This book reminds me a bit of "The Big Book of Tell Me Why" that children (and adults)love to read. I am a home schooling mom, not a math teacher. I am home schooling an accelerated second grader. For our "normal" math class work, we are use Singapore Math and the "Key To" series. For math enrichment, we are reading "Math on Call", A Mathematics Handbook and this one, "Math Games for Middle School". I find this book to be just what we need for answering my son's "why questions"."Where do numbers come from?""Why do we use base 10.""Do other people use another base?""Why do computers use base 2?""What is base 2?" As a home schooling mom, I love this book for its deep, yet managemable explanations to these questions.Terms are also defined. For example:base, exponent, decimal, decimal dot...both in terms and in examples. We are only on the first chapter (though I have browsed the first several) and my son only grasps some of the layers of the onion, but we are both enjoying the book. Our country relies too much on formulas and not enough on understanding. This book would bring joy to a class as an opening warm up to get them thinking. I wish we had more educators like the author of this book that excited his students to the joy of mathematics and not just to rote learning of rulesthat seemingly "dropped on us from the sky."The author taught on the faculties of Columbia university for 50 years and Princeton for 5 years. His earliest work was 8 years in his native city on the faculty of the University of Rome.Ph.D. in mathematics and in civil engineering. He has a center (I am not sure if it still exists as he died in 1997 at age 90) called the Salvadori Center that is dedicated to improving teaching in middle schools with emphasis on math and science. His words, "I have dedicated the last years of my life entirely to teaching the young, from kindergartners through high schoolers." Great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Math Games for Middle School
I teach middle school mathematics and I think the book is great to aid in cooperative learning groups.Using the information and developing work stations will enhance the students' knowledge of the material. As a lesson, the book would require the creativity of the teacher to add other material and/or adjustments to make it interesting. This book is best for reteaching or review of the topics being taught. ... Read more

This completely updated second edition illustrates the mathematical conceptsthat a game programmer would need to develop a professional-quality 3D engine.Although the book is geared toward applications in game development, many of thetopics appeal to general interests in 3D graphics. It starts at a fairly basiclevel in areas such as vector geometry and linear algebra, and then progressesto more advanced topics in 3D game programming such as illumination andvisibility determination. Particular attention is given to derivations of keyresults, ensuring that the reader is not forced to endure gaps in the theory. The book assumes a working knowledge of trigonometry and calculus, but alsoincludes sections that review the important tools used from these disciplines, such as trigonometric identities, differential equations, and Taylor series.Kindle textbooks are functionally equivalent to the print textbook. In some cases, individual items such as ancillary images or multimedia have been removed for digital delivery due to rights restrictions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not available for Kindle PC !?!
Disapointing : this ebook doesn't seem to be allowed for Kindle PC.
I was interested to be able to check the book on my desktop machine at work at the same time I would read it from my Kindle...

5-0 out of 5 stars I strongly recomend for the ones that want to seriously go into game development!
When I received this book I couldn't wait to start reading it. I didn't finish it yet but so far all explanations, mathematical rules are so clear and understandable. It's incredible to model world with usage of equations and numbers. Don't hesitate! Get it. Enjoy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Little more than an outline
I was disappointed in how little explanations were included in this math book.It seemed more like a dictionary. It was as if someone listed all the math concepts that could be included and then put the list into a hard cover binder.
I did read some of the other reviews thinking I had missed something. One suggested spending a year on the book. But there is so little there. My college book on linear algebra did a much better job of explaining the material.Theorems were explained, samples worked out and 10 to 20 problems were given at the end of each section. This book as 50 problems for the entire book. This book spends eight pages on quaternions.Studying these pages over an extended period of time would not give the understanding you could get from a book like Kuipers' Quaternions and Rotation Sequences. It took 75 pages but one is able to understand the system and how it relates to game programming.
With all the colleges now offering game programming degrees, their must be a book written by someone who is use to explaining the material. That person would know the best way to present the material and could anticipate questions and include the answers in his or her explanations.

2-0 out of 5 stars a disappointment
the second edition brings a new chapter on the graphics pipeline. Well done, except that it is extremely obscure, for those who already understood the arcanes of the graphics pipeline.
Chapter 5 on "ray tracing": 6 pages on root finding of quadratic, cubic and quartic polynomials;
to compare with Chapter 7: "Visibility determination": The spatial partitioning deserves solely 4 pages.
What's the point on dwelling so much on something that is trivial and botching something that is hard to grasp and of paramount importance ?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind

As a professional 3D graphics programmer, I can not stress enough the quality of this book. This book covers 3D math fundamentals, algorithms, and it is complete with easy to understand (!) proofs. The math is difficult because there is so many problems to be solved in 3D (and they draw from many different branches of mathematics), but it is written in such a clear way that every topic is made approachable. Unlike esoteric Ph. D papers, you aren't assumed to have any specific knowledge of math idioms or jargon. You simply need a decent grasp of college calculus and trigonometry to make the most of it. There are a few samples too to test your knowledge.

Expect to spend at least a solid year to really make the use of this book. Treat it as you would a two - three semester course in college. During this process, you'll find yourself occasionally wanting to get more practice and referring to a respective book on it.

If you could only own two books for 3D programming, buy this first and buy Ericson's book on collision detection next.

In summary, Eric Lengyel's attention to detail and mastery of 3D math / algorithms really shines and this book is an example of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Teaching Business Math
Great Graphs and Sensational Statistics really made our 6th Grade Business Math unit very fun and interesting. While charting commercials, dangling spoons, taking surveys, flipping coins and following the stock market...we learned all about how to present information in a form that others can understand.

This is very REAL math that my child can use throughout his life - whether he's a weatherman, scientist, or business administrator! We all need to learn how to present information clearly and effectively.

Oh, and some statistical work is in there - means, medians, conducting a study and charting statistical results...highly recommended!
