Product Description
FRACTION JUGGLERS helps kids grasp fractions and their real-world applications-while having such a great time, they don't even realize they're learning.Combining a full-color, illustrated book of 19 games and a custom-designed deck of 86 cards, FRACTION JUGGLERS steadily and thoroughly builds up a student's understanding of how to apply and manipulate fractions.

In the What's Bigger? Game, the smallest denominator wins. In the Renaming Game, players find ways to match "target" fractions. Reciprocals come into play in the Great Divide. And there's the Family Matters Game, the Mix and Match Game, the "I've Got It!" Game, and lots more. FRACTION JUGGLERS can be tailored to fit all ability levels, from fraction neophytes on. Adaptable and open-ended, the games encourage kids to both think and problem-solve creatively-and have a blast, too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Having Fun Learning Fractions
Fraction Jugglers is the best book we have ever seen to help kids (and adults!) learn how to use fractions. It starts from the very beginning (naming fractions) and gradually teaches everything you need to know. The illustrations are cute, the text is easy to understand, and the games are fun.We watched children laughing and excited to play as they were competing to see who would win the most cards.Meanwhile they were figuring out equivalent fractions without even realizing it.Definitely a great book. The fraction cards and fraction chart that come with the book are very helpful. ... Product Description

With an emphasis on mathematical thinking and problem solving, Mathematics in Games, Sports, and Gambling — The Games People Play shows how discrete probability, statistics, and elementary discrete mathematics are used in games, sports, and gambling situations. It draws on numerous examples, questions, and problems to explain the application of mathematical theory to various real-life games.

Only requiring high school algebra, the text offers flexibility in choosing what material to cover in a basic mathematics course. It covers permutations in the two-deck matching game so derangements can be counted, introduces graphs to find matches when looking at extensions of the five-card trick, and studies lexicographic orderings and ideas of encoding for card tricks. The text also explores linear equations and weighted equations in the section on the NFL passer rating formula and presents graphing to show how data can be compared or displayed. For each topic, the author includes exercises based on real games and sports data.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb intro to probability and problem-solving for gamblers
This book was originally intended to be a textbook for a college freshman mathematics seminar. The book states that you need high school algebra as a prerequisite for this book, and this is accurate. If the idea of graphing y=ax+b on paper seems easy, you have the background to read and appreciate this book.

I am amazed at how well written this book is. It explains some very serious topics in ways that are both interesting and understandable. I have never seen a serious book on mathematics that reads so easily. Nearly every topic covered is of interest to anyone interesting in sports betting or gambling. These topics include basic probability (including Bayesian probability), counting, binomial and Poisson distributions, analysis of data, "averages" and distributions, and combinatorics. Don't be intimidated by any of these topics if you have never heard of them -- they are each explained clearly with many interesting examples. What are the odds that a Nascar driver will have a flat tire during a race, or that a baseball player will have x hits in y at bats? What is Alex Rodriguez's true slugging average, with 99% confidence? How consistent is Pete Sampras's double-fault rate? There are numerous examples in different sports. Most of the examples and problems posed address "real-world" issues that team managers would worry about, or a casino actuary might consider.

In addition to the topics directly applicable to professional gamblers, there are a lot of other theoretical gaming topics that fall into the mix. This book provides an easy-to-read "toolbox" to solve all sorts of problems. If you are new to sports betting or gambling, and want to tackle problems yourself, this is a fantastic resource to get you started. If you have already studied probability, statistics and discrete/combinatorial mathematics, this won't offer anything new (other than interesting examples.)

Math Bingo GamesTh ese games are played similar to ordinary Bingo using callers cards and player generated cards. Instead ofhaving a person call out a number such I, nineteen the callers cards contain problems or short questionssuch as 5 + 4 = ?. Each player solves the problem that is stated orally or presented on an overheadprojector using a transparency. If the answer appears on a player s card, he/she covers it using a cardboardsquare or some other convenient marker (e.g., paper clips, corn, pennies). As in regular Bingo, the cardsthat are called should be kept separate from those that still remain to be drawn so that winning cards canbe verifi ed. When a player covers the prescribed Bingo pattern he/she calls out BINGO. Students shouldkeep their cards covered while the teacher checks the answers. Points or a prize are then given to the winner. How to Make Math Bingo CardsTh e players cards can be made by using one of the blank masters found in the Appendix. Begin byduplicating a supply of open-ended cards for your class. Th en use the sample card provided for the skillare you want maintained to tell students what problem or answers you would like to have printed on thecard. Tell students to write their answers in a random manner so that each player card has a diff erentarrangement of numbers. Explain to students that this will diminish the chances of several people getting a Bingo at the same time.Once the cards have been generated you are ready to the play the game. Before you start, check to see thatyou have the materials indicated below.Teacher: Caller s cardsStudents: Math Bingo card, cardboard squares or other suitable marker to cover numbers.Review the rules of regular Bingo with the class. Th en explain that Math Bingo is played in a similarmanner, and display how a win can be achieved on a sample card. Next, read or display the fi rst problem oranswer using a randomly drawn caller s card. After a few moments (the length of time will vary with the type of exercise) read or display the next caller scard. Continue on in this manner until some student says BINGO. Caution students to keep their cardscovered until all of the entries on the winners cards are verifi ed. Check each Bingo. If the card is correctlycovered the student has a valid Bingo. Following the completion of a round, points and prizes are awardedand all cards are cleared.Extending the Math Bingo GamesUnites throughout the mathematics curriculum lend themselves to maintenance using the Math Bingocards. Th e list of possibilities is limited only by the teacher s and students creativity in generating caller scards. Even skills in advanced mathematics can be practiced. For example, in Algebra the caller s cardscould contain equations inequalities, computation involving integers, work with polynomials, exponents, and circles. In Algebra II, Trigonometry, or Math Analysis, the problems on the caller s cards could involveslopes, quadratic equations, conics, logarithms, exponential functions, trig identities, or permutations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Instant Math Games
This is amazing to make self sufficient stations for my students. They love the games.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
The games in this book are all have easy directions and come pretty much ready to use with the addition of some dice and playing pieces. My kids love these games.I keep them in file folders in a file bin and the kids consistently choose these over other activities in the bin.I mostly use the games made to be played by 2 or more players. Most are logic based activities.I would not buy this for children who need activities to enhance basic skills like division, fractions, or decimals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Instant FUN with Math Games
This book truly makes math fun while sneaking in some important math skills along the way. I first learned of this book at our state's local Math & Science Fair.A local charter school set up a few hands on booths "staffed" by their elementary grade students. All of the kids who attended ended up playing EVERY game on the table. They were that drawn to them.

After seeing that I quickly purchased my own copy and I can say I'm extremely glad that I did. There are 38 games divided into three groups:individual, two player or two or more players. Each game lists the skill or skills used or accomplished while playing the game. The cover says grades 2-5 but I found over ten games to use with Kindergarten and First grade students in our co-op.There are several games that I can slightly modify as well. This will be a book that I know I will use for several years and particularly as we move into the higher maths. The games are fun, educational and unique.

I was so inspired by this book and the reaction of my children and the children that I saw at the Math Fair, that we started a Math Games Co-op to run all summer playing games from this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleased!
I use this book for the math fair each year.It has some fun logical puzzles that are not too difficult and easy for students to manipulate. It teaches them logical thinking similar to other types of puzzle games.I really use this book each year and the students love it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
