The author knows his stuff
Having previously worked for nearly ten years as a full-time tutor, I can honestly say that I wish I had this book handy to give out to the parents of some of my students.Ackerman gets it right when he notes that most older kids who have trouble with Math are in fact missing basic skills they should have picked up in younger grades.He's equally right when he describes a lack of confidence among parents who want to help their kids but don't know where or how to start.This book is a road map for meeting both of these challenges.

Very nice book
This is a nice way of showing me the bigger picture with regards to my child's math in school.The first section gives you an overview of what your child will learn in each math subject and practical ways to reinforce the skills at home.I had never thought about teaching my child about math while playing games and doing chores around the house, but these ideas are practical and I can see their usefullness.The second section really helped me remember all the math skills I had forgotten when I was in school.I'd would like to help my son at home and this book really breaks down all the essential math concepts for me in order to help him.This book doesn't have math lessons but it does give you the tools you need to help your child at home.

Good all-around math book
This book is a very good supplement or abbreviated 2nd grade math text. It is 104 pages of varied problems, mostly appropriate for this level. There were only a couple of problems that were really too hard for my son, age 7.

We homeschool and had to take a break in the middle of Abeka Arithmetic 2, as my son needed to learn his addition and subtraction facts more thoroughly before proceeding with that book. I used this book as a supplement, along withspeed drills and flashcards. It was just right and he enjoyed the varied and "fun" (he likes math) exercises. Don't waste your money on this.
I purchasd this book as "new". What I received was a book that had been used in 2008. I tried to return the book but by sending a note through Amaazon. That was early June. I still have not been contacted and Amazon did not offer any assistance.

Pretty Good Math Book
I use this book in school. It's not the most interesting subject, but it does work.

On the first few pages it shows that teachers really enjoy this book rather than Silver Burdett & Ginn or other math textbooks. It covers most of the 8th grade standards including:
-equations and inequalities
-graphing
-integers
-exponents and scientific notation
-rational numbers and operations
-real numbers
-collecting and describing data
-displaying data
-plane figures
-patterns in geometry
-perimeter and area
-3-d geometry
-ratios, rates, and proportions
-similarity and scale
-numbers and percents
-applying percents
-experimental probability
-theoretical probability and counting
-solving linear equations
-linear relationships
-sequences
-functions

There are twelve chapters in this book that put in two or three related standards and combining them in each chapter. Before every chapter is an Are U Ready? which has practice on the strategies needed in the chapter. There is also a "Focus on Problem Solving" which gives problem solving questions in standards already covered in the chapter (it's dead center in the chapter). There are also Mid-Chapter Quizzes which are halfway in the chapter to refresh peoples minds of earlier subjects. Also before every Chapter Test there is a Study Guide and Review which allows you to practice all of the standards before it's test time.

In the back of the book is a student handbook which has "Extra Practice" pages for all the lessons and a "Skills Bank" to practice techniques to finding answers. A "Selected Answers" is also there which shows all of the answers which means you should make sure your student has shown their work instead of copied all of the answers on their homework or classwork. Later, however, I found out in Independent Practice problems there are only the odd #d answers listed, so you might want to assign those for homework and/or classwork rather than the Guided Practice.

The book also has a website (which Amazon won't let me post) which has Homework Help and Test Taking Tips.
