3-0 out of 5 stars No complaints but suggestion!
The delivery time was great. The description could have been more specific - I was looking for logic puzzles of a certain type and could not tell if this book had the right type of logic puzzles from the description.

2-0 out of 5 stars Brainless
I am a seasoned veteran of logic puzzels, lateral thinking problems, math problems, and spatial reasoning puzzles.

These are not logic puzzles. They are not word problems. They are not tests of lateral thinking.Rather, they are poorly worded tricks.Everything has a "trick" to it.And not like the "roosters don't lay eggs" kind of trick, which can sometimes be fun.Not like the old game Mindtrap, which is also fun.Instead, you get these unclear paragraphs that require a few questions be answered before you can even go about thinking through a solution.

The complex crosswords are fun, but there are only four of them. Not recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unhelpful for LSAT prep
This was posted near LSAT review materials. I did not find it helpful. Too many of the questions are dissimilar from the type needed for the LSAT logic section.
It was also frustratingly difficult, because the directions and hints were too cryptic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ingenious!
Almost exactly ninety years ago, Sam Loyd's 'Cyclopaedia of Puzzles' was published in New York. This was a collection of a very large number of his puzzles which had mostly appeared in the American Press. Many were illustrated with delightful pictures at the head of the page, drawn in Sam's own hand. Barry Clarke's new book has marked similarities in layout with illustrations drawn by the author at the head of many pages and many puzzles had previously appeared in the 'Brain Twister' column in the Daily Telegraph. The drawings are remarkably like Sam Loyd's, but there the similarity stops. Sam Loyd's book was foolscap size and hard bound while Barry's has the typical Dover cover, but the real difference is in the puzzles themselves. Barry's puzzles are graded in difficulty, so that readers who do not wish to be challenged too much can start with the first section and gradually work themselves in. Also, the puzzles are ingenious and well thought out and hints are provided before the full solutions for those who need a bit of steering. This is altogether a very good read, guaranteed to keep the puzzler in the family busy over Christmas. I thoroughly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mathematical Poetry of a Puzzle Artist: Barry R. Clarke
In this most recent adventure into the Puzzling World of Barry R. Clarke, I found my mind quite well entertained. What I enjoy most about logic puzzles is their requirement for little if any prior knowledge, and each of Barry's "puzzlers" is no different. However, what is missing in most logic and mathematical puzzle books is a touch of true creativity and humor. In Brain Busters! I found that while my mathematical mind was challenged to the limit, I was also encouraged to think in new and original ways, moving from basic logic to the simple yet complex world of recreational mathematics. Barry Clarke pushes your mind to the edge with this most recent creation, and holds you there.

As Mr. Clarke notes in the introduction, his reasons for this puzzle compilation included the pure enjoyment of creating logical and mathematical art. Fortunately for us, Barry's creations serve not only the role of entertainment, but also more importantly the role of instruction, as he leads us down different paths of twisting logic, with excellent scenery along the way. If you view mathematics as a form of poetry, you will certainly enjoy this opportunity to learn from a mathematical wizard. Brain Busters! is indeed a "mind-stretching" experience, one that allows you to see the way Barry's imagination is captured in a distinctly unique manner in each of his puzzles. His mathematical imagination is the communality that runs through each puzzle, but at the same time it is his creative touch that serves as the specificity, giving great variation to this excellent and enjoyable work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars pillow problems
Definition of a pillow problem: A problem you can do in you head without too much trouble, if you look at it in the right way. An interesting problem to think about while you are going to sleep, whether you solve it or not!

This is one of the best collection of "pillow problems" I've ever found.

Consider "Problem 35."

Find the lowest number that has a remainder of

1 when divided by 2,
2 when divided by 3,
3 when divided by 4,
4 when divided by 5, and
5 when divided by 6.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Math Puzzles for Kids!
This is a terrific book of math puzzles for kids. They start of easy (using only the numbers 1, 2, & 3) and get harder (using the numbers 1-6). I bought volume 2 for my 9-year-old to keep his brain active over the summer. He LOVES it so I ordered this one, and volume 3, too. These puzzles are great for problem solving and critical thinking. The puzzles are similar to sudoku (sp?), but not quite the same. It says this book is for kids ages 9-12, but I think my son could have done these when he was 7 or 8. He has an EXTREMELY mathematical mind. If your child is older (11-12) and also has a mathematical mind, you might try some of the kenken books for adults. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun, Easy Little Book
"I Can Kenken vol. 1 " is a great little book for kids, especially those about 8 or 9, but adults like myself can also have fun with it.There is an introduction with instructions and hints about how to do kenken. The 75 puzzlesstart off very easily using only the numbers 1,2, or 3 and gradually progress to using 4, then 5 and finally finish with numbers 1 through 6.The whole book uses addition as the only operation and each kenken puzzle is rated from easy, to moderate to difficult.Although it's quite easy for an adult, I've still enjoyed using "I Can Kenken Vol. 1" and have quickly progressed to more difficult Kenken puzzles in other books. So, now "I Can Kenken" too. It's probably best for kids, though. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Puzzles that can be solved with reasonable persistence
The first sixty-three puzzles in this collection have the form:

In a certain bank, the positions of cashier, manager and teller are held by Brown, Jones and Smith, although not necessarily respectively. The teller, who was an only child, earns the least. Smith, who married Brown's sister, earns more than the manager. What position does each man fill?

Most of the rest are arithmetic problems where some of the digits are absent or represented by letters. For example, number ninety-two is

SPEND
- LESS
----------
MONEY

Solutions to all of the puzzles are given at the end.
While the puzzles require some thought, none is of the extreme stumper variety. By using a pencil and paper and working through the possibilities, all can be solved in a short period of time. Puzzles like this are excellent mental fodder and a good way to pass the time productively. In general, I enjoy working such problems and had a lot of fun with those in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Math Problem Solving with logic problems and puzzles
I am using this book for a grad school course about Problem Solving. This course is also being used with the books "How to Solve It" by G. Polya and "An Open-Ended Approach" by NCTM.
This book are logic problems and puzzles. There are Arithmetic CXII Puzzles (112 problems), "Quibble"or "Catch" Puzzles, Word and Letter Puzzles, and they all have solutions. There is also Keys/Clues to Arithmetical Puzzles and their proofs.
Example of problems:
Problem: Subtract 45 from 45 in such a manner that there shall be 45 left.
Problem: A man, being asked how many pennies he had in his pocket, replied, "If I divide them by 2, by 3, by 4, by 5, or by 6, I shall always have one over."
Problem: By use of addition and multiplication of the numbers 1 to 9, make 100. Each number can only be used once.
Problem: A boatman has to ferry across a stream a wolf, a goat, and a basket of cabbages. His boat is so small that only one of the three besides himself, can be contained in it. How is he to manage, so that the wolf shall have no opportunity of killing the goat, or the goat of eating up the cabbages?
Problem: William gives Thomas as many dollars as Thomas has. Thomas then gives William as many dollars as William has left. This done, William has 36 dollars and Thomas has 42 dollars.
How much did each have at first?
The problems also get much more difficult.
The solutions/answers to all the above problems using algebra and/or illustrations/charts/graphs are available in this interesting book. If you are an upper level math teacher that wants to give students extra credit regarding these math problems, this would be a good book for you to have in your teacher library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a fun new way to practice math facts
I decided to try this book with 5th and 6th graders who are behind in math and not yet automatic with their math facts. I never even knew how to "play" sudoku until I learned with the students. But it definitely makes it more fun for them to practice the facts. They went through the book quickly and the gains were surprising. At first I thought they were using the sudoku as too much of a crutch but it turned out to be a nice mechanism for checking. I also ordered the fraction sudoku book and I'll try that with some of them soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes math fun
Great book for making math fun and approachable...wish there more like it. I actually enjoyed and looked forward to helping my kid with math.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic problems just right for fourth graders
My fourth grade son recently purchased this book and he has been enjoying it ever since. He really likes the problems that appear to be magical, but are in fact simple applications of numbers. None of the problems are original, most would be considered classics, and some have been around for centuries. However, that does not detract from their quality, as they require a great deal of thought, some of it of the sideways variety. Like most good puzzles, successfully arriving at the solution sometimes requires that the obvious possibility be rejected in favor of a different approach.
A previous reviewer mentions that there is an error on page 69. That person is mistaken. The problem is correct as stated, the reviewer is simply not understanding that the numbers are not to be altered from their current alignment, which would mean the numbers that are left aligned are to be considered to have trailing zeros.
I enjoyed the book and my children are finding the problems to be challenging and educational. In no way do I regret allowing my son to purchase it.

1-0 out of 5 stars 7 Year Old Finds Math Error In Math Tricks Book
My 7 year old son found a serious math error in this book by Professor Numbers, aka, Ray Blum. On page 69, under "Mathematical Oddity", the author purports that the two columns of numbers have the same sum. The nine numbers in the left hand column of numbers are each greater than their counterpart in the right hand column. It goes without saying that the left hand column adds up to a higher number than the right. So much for basic math logic.

As an earlier review stated, this book basically recycles old math tricks. Not that this is a punishable offense, but the book fails to explain WHY the tricks work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mathemagic tricks quickly lose interest...
This book was written by copying existing well-known tricks. In my opinion this is a waste of money, and my worst online purchase ever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Whodunit Math Puzzles
This is an excellent, non-threatening way to introduce math in the real world to children.Cal's adventures are short, and require problem solving skills that everyone needs to practice. This book is not just for the mathematically inclined. It is for children of all ages looking for a riddle to solve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent math puzzles for the middle school child
My son likes math puzzles, so when he saw that this book was available, he purchased it through the scholastic books program at his school. He enjoyed it and so did I. It consists of 22 problems presented in the form of math puzzles. Each puzzle is roughly four pages in length and solutions to all are in the back of the book. The writing is well done and the problems posed are at the middle school level.
Most of the problems involve crimes and what is nice about the stories is that the problems blend so well with the situations. One of the main and valid criticisms of textbook problems is that they are so artificial. There is none of that here. The problems are fresh, interesting and present mathematics in a realistic light. If your children have an interest in math, then you should buy them this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I agree with all the other Reviews about the Brain Games book of Brain Teasers etc.
I agree with all the other Reviews about the Brain Games book of Brain Teasers etc. This book is thought provoking and tells you a lot about puzzles etc. and how to solve games and stuff. This is not for someone who just wants to solve a bunch of puzzles during a flight, trip, or something. This is more of an encyclopedia type book on how to solve problems and questions and stimulate your brain by developing your own creativity and stuff. You will get games and stuff, but not just games, if that makes sense. Also there is a revised version that has the table of contents hyper-linked and better navigation if you don't mind paying the xtra 2 bucks, just look for the same book with the starburst picture on the cover. Otherwise it's the same book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brain Exercise Book
Brain Exercise Book that gets into details of problem solving etc. and hot to solve problems.Brain Book for people who like quizzes etc. but not a bunch puzzles. More of a how to solve problems rather than a book full of problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches You Mind Games, Brain Teasers, etc.
Teaches You Mind Games, Brain Teasers, etc. This is not a book of endless puzzles. This books teaches you methods of puzzle solving, methods of solving problems, quizzes, etc.A real brain exercise of methods, with problems and examples that you run into mixed in.Teaches how to come up with your own mind games. ...
