Who invented numbers? What are prime numbers? How do you do long division? How do you calculate percentages? If your child is asking for help withthese questions, and you're feeling a little rusty, this is the perfectbook to have on hand--for yourself and your inquisitive fourth- to sixth-grader.Colorful and accessible, this clear guide defines math terms andconcepts with both visual and written description. For example, authorsAnne Zeman and Kate Kelly describe a fraction as "one or more partsof a whole or a set," and they also offer the image of a necklace of beads toshow how each bead is part of a set. The book is divided into the following sections: "Numbers andNumber Systems" (ancient number systems, the decimal system);"Basic MathFunctions" (math symbols, addition and subtraction, multiplication anddivision, fractions, rounding and estimation, averages and medians, properties and orders, story problems); "Measurement" (measuring length, distance, weight, perimeter and area, volume, temperature, time); "Geometry"(geometric shapes, symmetry, congruence, similarity); "Money and MonetarySystems" (U.S. currency, other currency systems); "Graphs" (plottinginformation, four kinds of graphs); "Statistics and Probability"; "Computersand Calculators" (the abacus, simple calculators, the computer); and acomplete index. Information for the Scholastic Homework Reference Series was gathered fromcurrent textbooks, national curricula, and the assistance of the UFTDial-A-Teacher staff. (Ages 9 and older) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for homeschoolers
We checked this book out of the library, and I love it.I recently started homeschooling my 4th grader.Teaching math has proved a challenge for me--I have trouble helping him understand key concepts.I found this book at the library and it has become indispensible.I'm now buying a copy so that I don't need to keep checking it out.

I too have found a couple of errors, but since I am referring to it, not my son, it has not been a problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book!
I love this book.I bought a copy for my oldest child 8 years ago to help her understand various math concepts and help with homework as needed. All three of my children have used it over the years and I am once again introducing it to my students at our local elementary school. The visual examples and wording in the book really help children to understand. The index is very thorough and allows the child to find what they need quickly. It's a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent math reference for 4th to 6th grade
This book provides an excellent overview of math through 6th grade. Each topic is covered clearly and concisely in 2 to 4 pages: idea overview, verbal description, formulae, picture demonstrating the algorithm, and one or more examples. Pictures clearly demonstrate the idea, and are colorful and creative, adding to interest.Descriptions are clear yet brief, as is the entire book.Does not include problems to be worked by the student. Many topics covered, including addition, subtraction, long division, factoring numbers, greatest common denominator, money, measuring, computing volume, and more. Well organized chapters and table of contents provides easy access to information required.Excelent reference to help 4th to 6th graders understand their math homework.

We purchased this book in 2006 and found no errors so far. It has really helped my daughter with her math homework.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeschooler's Blessing
My mathphobic 11 year old went wild when he saw this book. He loved it!!! And as a 20 year veteran of homeschooling, I find it's a fantastic resource - I don't know how we ever lived without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book!
I am an adult and teacher and this book helps me!It is great to use with students and to send home with them.I highly recommend the whole series for home and the classroom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for everyone
I discovered this book several years ago and have since referred it to lots of people. I have purchased at least 10 copies throughout the years, sometimes I tutor teenagers and young adults. All of whom I have given this book and most state they have a better understanding of math now and are not as intimidated. Great reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Complete
After having worked as a reference librarian for the past 20 years, finally someone published a very clear, concise, and complete manual for a cross section of mathematical levels.I would recommend this volume for anyone going back to school and or taking a standardized test(i.e. Asvab, GED, SAT, GRE).

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is fantastic!
This is a fantastically helpful resource. I wasn't terrible at math in high school but I don't really remember most of it. These math problems sometimes come out of nowhere, though... I recently had to work out the square area of several rooms to know how much paint to buy. There's a reason that sounds like a word problem from an old math book - turns out people do actually need this stuff from time to time!

Thankfully, I was able to look up 'Area' on page 126 and not feel like a total moron at the paint shop. Very useful. Might get a second copy to keep at work...

Wholly recommend this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars concise and elegant
This is by far the best and most concise basic math book I have seen in years. It is remarkable to see that every possible mathematical operation can be explained and dealt with virtually on a single page--with helpful step by step examples. I will certainly encourage all my SAT students to get one...GRE folks would benefit even more since they are even more removed from what they should have learned by their High School senior year. Great Book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent mathematics reference book for late elementary or early middle school children
Students in late elementary school reach the point where they now have enough mathematical background so that they need reference materials. Those reference materials are basic, generally definitions and a short historical background. This book provides the references necessary for students in late elementary and middle school to understand and explore mathematics.
A large number of figures, graphs and tables are used to demonstrate the concepts. The basic arithmetic operations, statistical computations, probability, measurements and fundamental geometric figures are all covered. Written in clear concise text, a short set of review problems is included at the end of the sections. An answer key to the review problems, a glossary and an index together form the last section.
This book is a simple, effective reference book for the basic mathematical concepts. It is worthy addition to any elementary school library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it. Useless
Useless book for a grade 2 kid. it is a book for parents not for the child. One has to read and give instructions to the kid to make mathematical observations during our daily lifes. what a piece of S**T. Not even worth a $1.00 i paid plus $3.99 shipping. Don.t buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars As a tutor
In my spare time I work as a math tutor.Currently I have a few grade school students who use the Everyday Mathematics program.Since I do not have all the materials that the teachers have, knowing what exactly to tell the kids can be difficult at time.Luckily for me and my students, Everyday Mathematics provides a student reference book. With the aid of this book, reinforcing the lesson at home is much easier and much more effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars As an editor
I came across this book almost a year ago now.I didn't think much of it at the time, but as worked progressed (I am a grade school math books editor myself) I found that the UCSMP Everyday Mathematics Student Reference Book was superior to the text that I was currently working on.Its now disappointing to see my publsiher work they way they do, but reassuring to know that some people still care enough to put out a quality product. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Math You Actually Use!
This book on Everyday Math is wonderful.A must have item in the home.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
I can't imagine what's not to like about this book. You won't find derivative tables or anything but you will find explanations and formulas for almost any math you'll need in daily life. I especially like the book because it gives explanations and concepts that lie behind the numbers and formulas. For example, in the money section you'll find the standard formulas but you'll also find hints about investment strategies (mathematically based) and hints for reading stock tables. A great reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars dandy book
This a very helpful book. I know a home-skooler wacko who distrusts government but trusts this volume enough it is the main textbook in maths for her 6 year old. I claim responsibility for introducing wacko and her treble wacko hubby to his book ... desperation, the kid is not going to be engineer material [but I can hope] but I am trying to save him from a life of flipping hamburgers.
That written, much of this book covers what was called `practical math' ... really useful stuff not `rocket science' stuff culled from an MIT blackboard.
This book not only well written and understandable it is totally without the sick `humor' which seems to be in style in maths books.

4-0 out of 5 stars For those who need to brush up their math ....
Many of us forget math concepts we were introduced to at school. For a quick brush up, this is a good reference book. Fractions, decimals, percents, arithmetic concepts, elementary algebra, trigonometry and other such items are all covered. Besides, in keeping with its title of"everyday math," the book also goes into such things are interestrates, IRA and 410(k) math, stocks, mortgages, basic book-keeping and evencasino gambling! The occasional anecdote or story pertaining to math (onewas on the titles of alcohol measures such as jeroboams and rehoboams, another on the Father of Algebra) give welcome breaks from the technicaltext. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I would make improvements on this one.
This book didn't thrill me and it confused me even further when trying to learnmy med math. First, I hate the size of the book, .... mostly because it was difficult to handle and the print is very small. It would be much easier to use larger.I was frustrated with math to start and this just made me more frustrated..

5-0 out of 5 stars Best nursing math book every!
This is the best book for ALL nurses; those working in the field and those who are aspiring to be nurses. I have used it extensively for my drug doseage calculation reviews as an LPN and now using it as a review in math for my entrance exam for the RN program. I originally purchased it back in the late 1980s and it is still just as useful today. Don't hesitate to buy it!!!

Product Description
Kids are struggling with math in school, on tests, and with homework. Parents feel stressed, helpless, and math-phobic. They struggle to encourage and assist on the very subject they are least prepared to manage: MATH.

Broken down using straightforward, simple language, this guide offers parents who are easily intimidated by math instructive and handy concepts to use when helping their students with homework or studying for a big test.

Parents banish math phobia once and for all by facing math head-on in Math for Moms and Dads. Frequently, the issue isn’t “how to,” it’s actually “what do they want me to do?” Learning the language of math in context is the first step in the right direction for helping yourself in today’s math morass so parents can help their child find his or her way out of any math quagmire.

Using a similar methodology applied in SAT Score-Raising Math Dictionary, Kaplan now focuses on the parent in this no-nonsense guide to the lexicon of math. Math terminology and key concepts are defined and decoded into regular, everyday language to promote authentic understanding of what’s at the heart of any math problem.

Other helpful elements are sample problems (with answers, so parents won’t sweat it!) broken down step-by-step; calculator tips so parents can troubleshoot technology-related concerns facing their kids; visual representations of math for visual learners; and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards so parents can plan for what their children are responsible for in the upcoming grade and get the help they may need in the appropriate time frame. Finally, a handy timeline detailing which ages/grades kids need to know and master certain math skills helps parents understand the overall math snapshot for the middle school and high school years ahead.

Parents (and then students) learn how to kick word problems to the curb once they figure out how to simplify the language of math with Math for Moms and Dads' easy-to-follow lexicon and resource guide! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Auto Math Handbook
Very informative and interesting book!I use it surprisingly more than I thought I would! Also very fast shipping on Amazon's part.

1-0 out of 5 stars SO SO at best
The book is completely dated and simply re-states math formulas. I blew through it in about 30 minutes and found my self regretting the purchase. Good thing I bought it used!

4-0 out of 5 stars a reason to like algebra
i hated math. that is until i decided to get into engine building and drag racing. building a high performance engine requires it. this book gives you formulas for everything from figuring overbore to weight transfer. to be honest, its not really a "fun" read, but the information in these pages are critical to building a high performance engine as well as keeping your ride straight through the traps.

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit disapointed
Pretty basic, was looking for more. These formula combo's are easily found on the net for free, if you do not have the net? you will not see this anyway. The book does have some value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook
manythanks.it's an excellent book with a lot of mathematical equations inside and short and clear base explanations, based on the physics.
It's not real engineering book, but very close to the university mimeographed.
I'm really satisfy with it and would recommend it to purchase.
