Good varied workbook with a little spice
I homeschool my fourth grade daughter.She is very creative and it is hard to find math workbooks that she will do.I could sit down and work with her on games and creative problems, but I don't have time.This is the kind of workbook she is willing to do.It is not a curriculum.But it does have new kinds of problems that kids have to use some kind of creativity or logic to solve for the most part--many puzzle like problems.Some of the pages show interesting math tricks (calendar math tricks, multiplication by 25 or 125 tricks), magic squares or the like. Some of the pages are really basic practice drill with a twist. Some pages cover Fibonacci numbers,Pascal's triangle, Chinese abacus, organizing data, tricks for checking divisibility by 3,4,6,8,9.There is no clear organization to the topics--a lot of variety, which is good for my daughter.

Since my fourth grader is my oldest child I am not sure the degree of acceleration for this book, but it seems that it is not very accelerated.For example, my daughter is very smart about math, but doesn't always do her calculations carefully or feel motivated to study math.She is not ahead of grade level in terms of knowing more about how to do complex calculations, but she has an intuitive sense for how to do many basic fourth grade level things.This workbook is perfect for her because it uses creative thinking and logic and presents interesting problems for the most part to exercise those fourth grade math skills and then some.I teach her anything she needs to know to do the problem and then she is somewhat motivated to do the problem at hand because of its topic or how it is structured or presented. If you are looking for intriguing and enriching problems, creative problem solving, exercises for logic skills, fun worksheets, this might fit the bill.If your student is accelerated, doing problems typically at a higher grade level, you may want to buy the book for the grade level that they are currently comfortable working in.

For basic math, we use this book in conjunction with Primary Grade Challenge Math and Reading and Math Jumbo Workbook from Scholastic.We also use a few other curriculum pieces to add interest, challenge and variety.

Before finding this book, I was thinking of buying critical thinking workbooks (which would have been overkill) so that she could practice logic type problems.There are some sprinkled in this book and that amount is perfect for us. ... Read more

This book is in good condition, there is a little bit of writing on some pages and cd has a few scratches. I haven't tried the cd yet soI don't know if it will run through those scratches. The book took the longest to get to me. It arrived two weeks after the ship date, and after I emailed the company inquiring about the shippment. Other than that the book is great and what I needed.
