An excellent mathematics reference book for late elementary or early middle school children
Students in late elementary school reach the point where they now have enough mathematical background so that they need reference materials. Those reference materials are basic, generally definitions and a short historical background. This book provides the references necessary for students in late elementary and middle school to understand and explore mathematics.
A large number of figures, graphs and tables are used to demonstrate the concepts. The basic arithmetic operations, statistical computations, probability, measurements and fundamental geometric figures are all covered. Written in clear concise text, a short set of review problems is included at the end of the sections. An answer key to the review problems, a glossary and an index together form the last section.
This book is a simple, effective reference book for the basic mathematical concepts. It is worthy addition to any elementary school library.

Not worth it. Useless
Useless book for a grade 2 kid. it is a book for parents not for the child. One has to read and give instructions to the kid to make mathematical observations during our daily lifes. what a piece of S**T. Not even worth a $1.00 i paid plus $3.99 shipping. Don.t buy this book.

As a tutor
In my spare time I work as a math tutor.Currently I have a few grade school students who use the Everyday Mathematics program.Since I do not have all the materials that the teachers have, knowing what exactly to tell the kids can be difficult at time.Luckily for me and my students, Everyday Mathematics provides a student reference book.With the aid of this book, reinforcing the lesson at home is much easier and much more effective.

I came across this book almost a year ago now.I didn't think much of it at the time, but as worked progressed (I am a grade school math books editor myself) I found that the UCSMP Everyday Mathematics Student Reference Book was superior to the text that I was currently working on.Its now disappointing to see my publsiher work they way they do, but reassuring to know that some people still care enough to put out a quality product. ... Great resource for elementary math
My daughter is in 2nd grade and her teacher suggested this book as a resource for looking up math concepts.It is very good at explaining the math concept along with a great index to let them know where to look up the item.Highly recommend this an aide to a elementary child learning math.

Wonderful asset, great organization
Saxon is an incremental approach with lots of repetition and drill built in.The teacher's edition is necessary to introduce new skills at an appropriate time.It's a fully scripted approach but you do not have to use the script - just use the creative teaching ideas.My 6 yo son LOVES to do math.It's his favorite subject.Lots of hands on materials available to go along with this set. ... A MANDATORY READ FOR EDUCATION DEBATERS
Wow, what a great book. This book confirmed all of my observations and conclusions about Urban schools.I worked in the NE and the SE as a substitute teacher. I thought students reacted to me the way they did because I was substitute teacher. But here is a permanent teacher experiencing the same classroom conditions that I experienced .What an eye opener.

It should also be a mandatory read for anyone, other than teachers, attempting to solve an urban school problem. That includes the President of the United States, all the way down to the local school board member.

This is an actual diary of a Math teacher in central Bronx, NY. This book reveals the actual problems teachers encounter on a daily basis. You will readactual cases of truancy, administration ignorance, student violence, parental neglect and teacher indifference.

The author comes up with solutions to the urban education problem, whichare similar to mine.

Again, a mandatory read for anyone trying to solve today's urban education problem.

Survival of the Fittest
We all must show respect for those who survive in schools of this kind. Education workers like Mr. Klass are to be commended for enduring an environment of their own choosing if not of their own making. Still, after all the hugs and congratulations, someone has to call out these "teach for America" volunteers and ask why they put up with all the crap instead of joining forces and refusing to proceed. Even the eighteen-year-old grunts in Iraq had the courage to protest being sent into battle without proper gear and protection. Year after year we read the same stories by earnest do-gooders who find happiness among the ruins. What is needed now is fewer acts of goodness and just one brave act of defiance. Let the education workers walk out and leave the asylums to the bureaucrats who thrive in them. If the parents so earnestly wish to be involved, let them take over the schools. They'll soon be using the soiled textbooks as toilet paper, but so be it. They can always apply for a grant from Bill Gates for free lap top computers.

NYC Public School teacher telling it like it is


This author speaks for all of us teachers who are struggling every day in dealing with hoardes of unruly students.After only reading a few pages, I felt like I could have written the same book.The fact that it is in diary form makes it all the more real and frightening.Reading it is definitely helping me get through the end of this horrific school year.I have highly recommended it to my colleagues.

Well Written Autobiography
Man Overboard is a very witty and poignant autobiography about the experiences of a new second-career math teacher (actually ninth-career in his case) spending his first year teaching high school in the Bronx.On one level, it explores in an absorbing and meaningful way the various problems in the world of Bronx high school culture.On another level, Mr. Klass is also writing about his career aspirations, and how it feels to have frustrations meeting his goals of helping some people who need it.The book connects with the reader very well on both levels.I particularly liked how the drumbeat of daily problems is punctuated periodically with reflective essays, cast in italics, which are full of common sense and practical, logical analysis and suggestions.It is a very well written and enjoyable book, and I would highly recommend it to all.

Man Overboard
Ric Klass, with humor and a clear, purposeful writing style, took me into his math classroom in an inner city high school in New York.I found myself empathizing with his desire to do someone some good; to make the world a better place.It was easy to understand his frustrations with all the barriers he had to get around to try to fulfill his dream, and just as easy to rejoyce in some small hint of success.
As well as being a good read, this book has an important message for us.We must make some changes in the way our children are being taught, especially those students who need to escape from a seemingly hopeless environment.I recommend this book to anyone who cares about children and our future as a nation.I'm telling all of my friends about it.JL in SD ... content not representative of the actual cset
a good starting point, maybe.the practice tests are nothing like the real cset.the cset asks much more abstract (that's the best word i can think of) type of questions--the sample test on the cset website gives a much better idea of the type of questions on the exam.this book's subject matter review is also very basic and doesn't go in-depth enough.I didn't rely solely on this book for studying, and would NOT recommend it for anyone to use as their only study guide.there were some topics on the cset that weren't in this book at all, and most other topics were woefully inadequate.

CA CSET Math 7-12 (REA) - The Best Teachers' Test Prep for the Cset by The Staff of REA
This book is very over-simplified and didn't compare at all to the actual test.It goes into detail about easy math, glosses over harder math, and doesn't even come close to the depth you'll need for the test.The sample questions on the CSET site are much closer to being like the test, and it would be better to get real high school math books and review every chapter.

CSET Mathematics Book Review
I wanted to write this review almost as a warning.I bought this book hoping that it would help me pass the CSET after hearing that the exam has around a 35% pass rate.The problem with this book is that it almost dumbs down the subjects and makes you feel as though you will smash the exam.The real test however is immensley more difficult and had this book been the only resource I utilized, I do not believe I would have passed.The book is okay if you have been away from mathematics for a long time, but if you are fairly confident in your mathematics ability it would be best to find a county CSET Math review course.Also the CSET website has a good sample test to work through so buying this book isn't quite neccessary.Hope this helps any future math teachers.Good Luck.

Excellent Review Material except for the Practice Tests
I went to pick up this edition of the book rather than the book w/ CD. For being out of the undergraduate scene for a couple of years, this book has plenty of great material for those who are looking to become secondary math teachers. It is very helpful, in my opinion, that you read through and practice the problems presented in this book if you are near the end or recently graduated from college/university. The book presents theorems and explanations very much like a summary of one's mathematical journey taking math classes from middle school years through college. You will definitely need to fill in the gaps in several places to keep up with material continuity.

Practice material in this book do not reflect the difficulty of the actual CSET Math Subtests. I hear different things from those who have taken the test. For the most part, the actual test is much harder. Some people had the delight of seeking roots of functions more often. Some people had the equivalent joy of working with algebraic concepts of Groups, Fields, and Rings (which this book does not present). And others had stories of the Statistics. What ever you happen to endure when taking the subtests in the future, make sure that you are solid. This book helps but isn't the be-all end-all prep material for CSET Math.

A place to start if you're studying for the Math CSET
I first reviewed for the CSET with this book. I found that for the most part, it covered the formulas I needed to know for the Subtest I and II but for the Calculus part of it (test III) and History of Math I had to learn a lot more about those subjects for the test. Especially with Calculus, you have to know Taylor and Maclaurin series and all this EXTRA stuff that even an AP Calc student probably didn't put too much effort into studying. Also, it seems there is no really great resource for learning history of math - I just went through an online time line and picked and chose relevant mathematicians and made flash cards and that seemed to be enough for the test. The tough part is one of the constructed response questions uses a history of math topic so it may be an old formula that isn't true anymore and you have to use the formula and then use a contemporary formula and compare the results....at least that's what my test had on it.....it's pretty tough....you also need to know some of the more obscure trig identities like the half angles and the addition and sum formulas....lots of memorizing for that test.

I ended up checking out a Calc book and a Stats book - the stats in this book covers the basics but you're going to have to know how to conduct all the different tests - t test, hypothesis tests, p values, Chi square tests, z scores, confidence intervals - none of this stuff is in this book. So, it's a great starting point if you need to get your feet wet but you're not going to pass the CSET with this book alone :( sorry to say.....but at the same time I learned a lot from it and it's a great resource for formulas and for the practice tests.

For Subtest I, the book is kind of light in the Number theory section - the test requires you to know about fields and rings and prime number history...also to be able to prove that a set of numbers is a field or ring using properties of commutativity, associativity, distributivity, inverses, addition and multiplication identity, etc etc. The 'nuance' and subtlety that the CSET is testing is not really present in the review materials in any of the subtests but they are hinted at in the test questions in the book. I would recommend using the book as an initial refresher and then getting into textbooks and wikipedia for reinforcement. ... Read more
