1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
The test material is almost the same you can download from free at the GMAT website, it comes in hard disks, today any computer has the way to download hard disks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Often inflates your score!
Hey, don't waste your money!!

You can now get the new version, v3.0 for FREE!

Just go to the official GMAT site to download it!

The big problem with this software is that most of my students get a higher score on this than on the real test, so remember that when you're preparing.

Good luck on your test!

4-0 out of 5 stars Badly needed update will be published in June of 2000!
I run a test prep service and am *very* familiar with this product.

ETS(the company that makes the GMAT, GRE, and SAT) released this software soonafter they switched over from the paper-based format to the currentcomputer adaptive test.

What does this mean? Well, in a word, you arebuying a beta-version of the current GMAT: the real GMAT is *much* moredifficult than this test!

Many of our students can ace this test, yetthey get 100 to 200 points *less* on the real test!

Why is this? Well, part of the reason is that most of the questions from this software comesfrom the official GMAT book and many students become familiar with thatbook before they take the test.

What are some other reasons?

Well, themath questions that you will get with this software are not as hard as thereal ones if you are scoring pretty high (over 80%).

The reading passageson the real test are longer than the ones you will find in this program, aswell.

Finally, since the GMAT is now adaptive, the order of questions isimportant--for example, if you excel at sentence correction and the firstfew questions are sentence correction, then you will get a high score. However, if you are not good at sentence correction, then your score willbe abysmally low.

In short, this is the best prep available right now, but, if you can, wait for the 3.0 release in June of 2000.

Best of luckon your test!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
This software does not give you anything new. The "Official Guide for the GMAT" by ETS already has the same practice problems.

I found the software in "Cracking the GMAT CAT" by the Princeton Review to memuch more helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easier than the real thing
I studied for the GMAT using this software and the ARCO GMAT study book. I did not find nearly the same types of questions on the real thing (quantitative section) as in the practice software--exponets, geometry, proportions, etc. I wonder if due to the intense studying of their practicesoftware if the ETS folks revamped the GMAT test. It is helpful, but don'tbet too much on it. I scored much higher on the practice tests than on thereal bugger (taken Jan 2000). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tricks and clear explanations
This book was a very helpful resource for tips and tricks and how information around solving the similar type problems you see in the GMAT over and over again.I was always an A/B student and math was no exception, but I had to study hard for every math test as it does not come naturally for me.for those of you who can relate, I needed more preparation time for math than verbal. If you have the time to prepare effectively I would suggets the following:
1)Read GMAT for Dummies first to get reacquainted with the basic algebra, arithmetic and geometry concepts.
2)Read the Princeton Review GMAT book that covers all parts of the test cover to cover
3)Read this book next as it teaches you better tricks for answering tougher ratio, algebra and sufficieny problems than the General GMAT review book
4) If you have time, buy the Princetone Review book with the 1000 plus math problems to practice ( ihad only a month to prepare so I did not take this last step but it would have been helpful)

Finally, wear layers to the testing center because I was distracted by the cold AC and my subsequent headache and runny nose!!

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent refresher.....
this text is indeed extremely useful as a refresher for individuals who have been out of school for some time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Princeton Math Workboog For Gmat 2nd edition
Good book for preparingGMAT , Quant Section.

Must buy at any cost

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't Make This Your Only Book
This book is a decent supplement, but don't make it the only book you use to prepare for the Quantitative section of the GMAT.

I bought this after going through the full Princeton and GMAT guides (the ones that cover all test topics). I found that my math skills still needed a lot of exercise, so I ordered Princeton's Math Workout.

On the plus side, I've found that it has some helpful tips that weren't in the full Princeton book. However, its explanations of most topics are quite weak. The author will dedicate a couple of paragraphs to the basics of a subject, then present you with sample questions to solve. Too many times, the sample questions are quite a bit more complex than what he covered in his explanations.

If you're good at math, this won't be much of a problem for you. But then again, if you're good at math, you probably don't need this book. I'm NOT good at math, and need a guide that covers the topics in-depth rather than just giving me the basics and expecting me to extrapolate more advanced concepts from that.

I've also found a couple of typos in the book, which is particularly disturbing when you consider that it has a 2005 copyright. After three years, Princeton couldn't see fit to release a revised edition? The book also says you get six sheets of scratch paper stapled together when you take the GMAT. However, the big Princeton book says you get 10 sheets of laminated graph paper and an erasable marker. A minor thing, somewhat, but two guides from the same publisher shouldn't contradict one another.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book contains several errors
I decided to use this book as a supplement to a prep class I took. I was extremely disappointed to find that the book contains content errors. I am halfway through the book and I have already found 2 errors. If I had not already studied for the GMAT I would have gotten these problem types wrong on the GMAT. This book is also does not show you how to shorten your computations. I think this book is only good for a refresher and should be accompanied by a more thorough guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book for your Child (and the parent)
If your child is having difficulty in school or if you want to be sure your child is prepared to take the state exams, Barron's is an excellent review book (Math, Science, Reading etc by State). My suggestion is to buy the review books at the beginning of each school year grade so that you can begin reinforcing what your child learns in school (and what you have forgotten!!).When one of my granddaughters was struggling with math in the 3rd grade, I bought the Barron's Grade 3 Math book to help her review for the NYS math exam. With that review she had obtained and continues to maintain a good solid background in math. She is now in 6th grade and I still buy the Barron's grade level book (4th, 5th and 6th) for her to review and practice. I now bought the Barron's 4th grade math book for my granddaughter in Florida. I have also bought the Princeton review books for each grade and find that the Princeton books give parents better explanations in problem solving than Barron's but both review books are excellent. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! This book is a waste of time and money. I've only gotten through the math portion and what I saw of that, it was not great. The things the author teaches brings up topics and problems that I have never even seen on the ACT before. The explanations are awful. The author assumes that you know things when that might not be the case. Her wording on things is awful and confusing. And as with every book, there are quite a few mistakes in the book. I am sure that the Science section is just as awful as the Math.

4-0 out of 5 stars Math is harder than most other ACT prep materials
The book covers math topics broken down by major subject (pre algebra, algebra, geometry, plane geometry, and trig I think).Within each subject it covers more specific things and has sample problems. There's a mini-test at the end of each section with about 10-15 questions on what was just covered.I didn't look at the science section at all so I don't know what's there.

There is one math and one science practice test at the end.

I think the questions and material covered were a lot harder than the other prep books I've used, including the Real ACT Guide.More on things like graphing trig functions, etc. that I don't think are really crucial for the ACT, at least not in the depth they go.It was good for picking out some harder problems but I don't think I would use this as my main math review book.

Update: I like this book a bit better now that I've revisited it, after thinking the other review books were too easy.My biggest complaint now is that there is only one practice test.I think it would be much better if they made the book math only, and had 4-5 practice tests at the end (like McGraw Hill's does) instead of only one.I don't know if all of the content covered will actually be on the ACT, but it's a good book for those who want to err on the safe side by learning more.

5-0 out of 5 stars quick and good
We got the book really quick and in good condition. I am happy with it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
This book gives some good general advice about the ACT. However, much of the book goes over the correct answers for a particular version of an ACt exam, which we did not have. I don't know how hard it would be to get that version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Written by a perfect scorer, the book is much more than "just explanations" for one full real test.
This book and the Real ACT Prep Guide(The Real ACT Prep Guide: The Only Official Prep Guide From The Makers Of The ACT )are the only two books you need to prepare for the ACT. This book has the most easy to understand summery of grammar, punctuation and rhetorical skills that I have seen. I have seen 7 real ACT tests and have never come across an English question that was not covered in this book.

The list of math concepts is also very comprehensive and has a list of all the formulas that you need for the test. Again, I have never come across a math question on any of the 7 real ACT tests that I have seen that needed a formula that was not in this book. Also the math section directs you to real ACT questions (in the official practice test) to illustrate how the concepts are tested. I found this very helpful.

The science reasoning strategy in this book is very effective. I was never able to finish the science section until I started to use this strategy. My scores on the official practice tests used to be in the high 20s because I could not finish this section. Using this book's strategy, I got a 36 in the science on the last test that I took!

The book gives you links to three free real ACT tests and provides very good explanations for the current official practice test in the booklet "Preparing for the ACT".These explanations are from an author who has a perfect score of 36 on the ACT.

1-0 out of 5 stars I feel like hoodwinked...
This book only gives answers, which you can get from the ACT site, to the ACT free guide problems with inadequate and insufficient explanations. It's a waste of money. If you want to be well prepared for the ACT test, I recommend you to buy Barron's ACT prep book.

5-0 out of 5 stars In my opinion the most valuable tool for increasing your ACT score
I was looking for something to help my younger brother with his ACT preparation and stumbled upon this book.I remember being disappointed with test preps books in general when I was in high school, and this book FINALLY elucidates the vital concepts that the other test prep companies have failed so miserably to address. While the typical test prep books (Princeton Review, Kaplan, Barron's) yammer on about useless strategies and attempt to provide comprehensive coverage of every possible topic that might appear on the ACT, this wonderful little guide focuses on the core concepts necessary to master the test.It is also the only guide I've seen that emphasizes the immense value of using only the practice tests designed by the test makers, and the solutions provided to one of the real practice tests provide wonderful examples of the proper mental approach to answering ACT questions. In conjunction with the Real ACT prep guide this is in my opinion the most useful tool you can acquire for increasing your score quickly. My younger brother just recently took the ACT for a second time, and his composite score went up by five whole points after studying this book thoroughly and taking several real practice tests.I've never been more satisified with any test prep guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!
My son has always been working hard to give himself further oppurtunities after completing high school. When he first took the test, he was very disappointed with his score. He looked into several resources and found that this was the book that was most helpful to him. He likes the way the that this book analyzes and explains actual test taking material. The manner in which the strategies are introduced and then applied make the test taking strategies very understandable. After my son took the test a second time, he was very satisfied with the results, since his score went from a 29 to a 33! As a parent, I'm very glad my son was able to increase his score by 4 whole points using such a very affordable resource. This book was such a great aid I would recommend it for all students preparing to take the ACT. 5 stars for sure! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had read reviews..
I wish I had read the reviews prior to purchasing this book in the bookstore. There are way too many typos in the written word and the mathematical problems.I went to their website and sent them an email describing all of the errors, and it came right back without a response.I will never purchase another Barron study manual!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy!! Riddled with errors, will confuse and frustrate!!
I am taking the GRE to apply to Psychology PhD programs. So, math has never been my field of study. I got this workbook and the Barron's General GRE (18th edition) to brush up on both areas, verbal and math.

The math workbook is RIDDLED with errors; in the chapters, the practice problems, AND in the solutions!!! For a student like me, who is not adept at math, this was VERY VERY VERY confusing and frustrating. I'd labor over a problem, check my answer, and be shocked that I got it wrong. It wasn't until I got outside help that we figured out that the BOOK WAS WRONG.

Typos, missing symbols, the wrong signs (+ instead of -, > instead of <, random "?" marks instead of lord knows what).

Please please PLEASE do not buy this book. I am going to buy the Kaplan math workbook tomorrow in hopes that it is better than this (it has 4/5 stars on Amazon).

The publishers and authors should be ashamed. The GRE is often the gateway, or barrier, to a person's entire future and career. And they "prep" you with this garbage, only to confuse and frustrate.

Waste of my time and money, and jeopardizes my GRE plans. Thankfully, I decided to ditch this book and I've got 5 weeks until my test date.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is horrible -- it prompted me to write my first review!
The other reviews sum it up nicely -- I don't mind the presentation, formatting, etc., but the number and nature of the mistakes are absolutely inexcusable. It is clear that no one proof-read this.Completely shameful for anyone to charge money for this.It makes me want to Google-stalk the author and berate them soundly, perhaps even offering a few virtual ruler-on-the-knuckles lessons.

2-0 out of 5 stars don't bother
Lousy with typos. It's like they didn't even edit it. You've got enough headaches, right?
Poorly organized.
Answers to exercise questions difficult to locate, poorly labelled.

3-0 out of 5 stars Middle School status
The Math Workbook is okay. The teaching style is very much like middle school math.Certain things are not really explained at all, while other things that are absolutely a given are fully described. There are also a bunch of typo's in the book which are a little distracting, but it's obvious that they are typo's and shouldn't teach you incorrectly.I wonder who edits these books.Overall it does the job for the price. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Home School Resource
This is a wonderful resource for home schooling families. The textbook is divided into two main sections, biology and chemistry: within these sections there is coverage of all aspects of these general subjects. The writing style is clear and direct. Each chapter has experiments for hands on experience. Most items used in the experiments are readily available.

The unusual aspect of this book is that it is at once a teacher's manual and student textbook. It explains for the teacher clearly the objective and learning, and then gives the student study materials and experiments and writing assignments to clarify what they have observed and experienced.

A good textbook for preparing a high schooler for theGED test. One of the textbooks I would choose for a student inerested in college prep and for preparationtaking SAT/ACT tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classroom Asset
This book is excellent!I use all of the biology section. The chemistry is excellent too. Its a worthwhile tool to invest in.

2-0 out of 5 stars Check your curriculum before you buy it
While the activities in the book are great. Some are more in depth than others and some just seemed pointless. After using three of the activities, I felt the rest of the book was a waste of money. Before you buy check your schools curriculum and make sure you have time for a few days of "filler work" otherwise you wont use most of the material from this book. Also some of the illustrations seemed to be done on a poor computer. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wrong answers
Not good. Several wrong answers. The book also wastes a lot of pages by reprinting all the questions in full and in the same font size for the answers section. Clearly they didn't have enough material to fill the thickness of the book they had in mind. But nothing bothers me as much as wrong answers for simple questions. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars wrong answers for some questions
Test practices are fine, but there should not be any mistakes in the book.Like #14 (pg 64)in 'math application test practice'answer is 9 a.m. not 10 a.m.
#19 (pg 65) could have 3 correct answers.
Vocabulary (pg 13) #4 That dress is an "unusual" color. Odd or peculiar could both be correct. My 10 year old chose correct and checked in his Webster dictionary.Unusual was defined as 'odd' not 'peculiar'.

Too many errors for a test practice book, which has a lot of filler pages to begin with.
