    Extractions: M I C R O L E N S I N G O B S E R V A T I O N S I N A S T R O P H Y S I C S The M icrolensing O bservations in A strophysics (MOA) Project is a joint Japanese/New Zealand experiment established in 1995 to carry out astrophysical observations from New Zealand using `gravitational microlensing' and related techniques. Microlensing is a gravitational lensing phenomenon that was conceived by Einstein ( Science , 1936, Vol. 84, p.506) in which the gravitational field of an object ( eg. star) acts like a lens and magnifies a star behind it. The process allows some measurements to be made with extraordinarily high precision, much higher than is possible using conventional techniques. Its major drawback is that each measurement can be made once and once only. This is because the stellar alignments that cause microlensing are short-lived and non-repeating. The `moa' is also the name of an extinct bird, once found in New Zealand (see picture on right). The largest variety of moa, dinornis maximus , towered up to 2.5m in height. From the time of the first Maori settlements around 800 years ago to shortly before European settlement, the moa provided a plentiful food supply. Although there were some 11 species of moa, ranging from the size of a turkey on up, excessive exploitation as a food source led to their extinction.
