Extractions: Research in Atomic and Molecular Physics The atomic, molecular, and optical physics programs at LSU bring together the theoretical work of Drs. Rau and Schafer , and Boyd Professor O'Connell (also see condensed matter/solid state physics). Topics under investigation in atomic theory by this group include scattering, excitation, and ionization in electron-atom and electron-ion collisions, atoms in strong fields, and photo absorption. The roles of correlation, resonance, and relativistic effects are studied. In quantum optics, Dr. O'Connell studies energy shifts in radiation, as well as non-Markovian effects in quantum optics. Dr. Schafer works on intense laser effects on atoms, including multi-photon absorption and ionization and the production of high harmonics. Working with faculty members in this group are postdoctoral associates and a number of graduate students. In addition, there are ties to the experimental work in atomic physics in the Department of Chemistry, particularly in the laboratories of Drs. Hopkins and Poliakoff , and Boyd Professor McGlynn . Students from the department in Dr. Poliakoff's group study vibrationally resolved excitation of small molecules with photons of energy 10-200 eV at the CAMD Synchrotron facility. (see page 4).

Three of the leaders in this field were awarded the 1997 Nobel prize in physics . The very low temperatures obtainable by these techniques (as low as 1 millionth of a degree above absolute zero) permit one to perform extremely precise spectroscopic measurements free from most perturbations and with very long interaction times. For these reasons, laser cooling is being employed in the latest generation of neutral atom clocks, yielding dramatic improvements in precision. The major limitation on the interaction time obtainable arises due to the effect of gravity. Other applications of laser cooling involve the study of the novel behavior of very cold gases of atoms. At very low temperatures, for example, atoms confined within interfering pairs of lasers form an ordered array, called an optical lattice. By combining laser cooling with evaporative cooling, scientists have recently been able to study a purely quantum form of matter known as a Bose-Einstein condensate, and the researchers that first achieved this new state of matter were awarded the 2001 Nobel prize in physics.

W As is well known, it was the intimate relation, elucidated primarily by Boltzmann, between the laws of thermodynamics and the statistical regularities exhibited by mechanical system with many degrees of freedom, which guided Planck in his in genious treatment of the problem of thermal radiation, leading him to his fundamental discovery. While, in his work, Planck was principally concerned with considerations of essentially statistical character and with great caution refrained from definite conclusions as to the extent to which the existence of the quantum implied a departure from the foundations of mechanics and electrodynamics, Einstein's great original contribution to quantum theory (I905) was just the recognition of how physical phenomena like the photo-effect may depend directly on individual quantum effects . In these very same years when, developing his theory of relativity, Einstein laid a new foundation for physical science, he explored with a most daring spirit the novel features of atomicity which pointed beyond the whole framework of classical physics.

Extractions: Atomic Physics is concerned with describing the electron clouds surrounding the nuclei of atoms and the way these clouds are influenced by the presence of fields, either static or dynamic. Historically grounded in visible spectroscopy and collision experiments using free electrons, the field has expanded its scope to include spectroscopies that reach from radio frequencies to the X-ray region and collision experiments with ions and electrons with energies ranging from almost zero eV (e.g., ion traps) to tens of GeV (at high energy accelerators). Dr. Chung carries out theoretical studies for atomic systems containing several electrons. Atomic properties such as energies, wave functions, lifetimes, isotope shifts, fine and hyperfine structures are calculated for bound states as well as highly-excited resonance systems. Polarizability and dynamic polarizability of atomic systems are also computed to obtain the van der Waals coefficients for molecules. New methods, such as saddle- point techniques, full-core plus correlation, and restricted-variation methods are being developed in order to overcome the difficulties encountered in other theoretical approaches. These methods have been highly successful; very high precision results are obtained for three- and four-electron systems. The results thus obtained are very useful to experimentalists in the analyses of observed optical and electron spectra. Calculations are underway to apply these methods to five- and six-electron systems.
