Many of these experiments involve photothermal techniques in which information about the absorption of a material is obtained by detecting the change in the sample due to absorption-caused local heating. These techniques can be used to locate and study in detail the defects which give rise to absoprtion in high quality optical materials. Extractions: Laser spectroscopic techniques have been pioneered at City College and are being used to study dynamical properties of a variety of physical and biological systems. Several laboratories cited in the research sections above make extensive use of laser-scattering and laser-based diagnostic techniques. Beyond this, City College has a comprehensive research program in quantum optics and applied quantum phenomenology. The Institute for Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers encompasses eight laser laboratories located on the second floor of the Science building and the fifth floor of the Engineering building. These laboratories are fully equipped with state-of-the-art femtosecond lasers and instrumentation for modern fast kinetic picosecond and femtosecond spectroscopy. The director of the Institute is Professor Robert Alfano. The research of IUSL is supported by grants for pure and applied science from a broad variety of agencies and industrial organizations. Seven postdoctoral research associates and thirty graduate students work on topics in semiconductor properties, microstructures, polymers, laser-system development, nonlinear optics, signal processing, optical computation and ultrafast phenomena. In recent work, the carrier dynamics in GaAs heterostruc-tures, and phonon relaxation rates in liquids and solids have been studied using nonlinear optics techniques (forward four-wave mixing, Raman-induced phase conjugation). Furthermore, researchers at IUSL made the first observation of the cross phase modulation of a second-harmonic pulse from an intense, primary picosecond pulse propogating in a non-linear crystal. They have also constructed a picosecond-laser-driven Sagnac interferometric switch for implementing various optical logic and arithmetic functions.

In optical physics, one of these developments has been the introduction of 'chirped-pulse amplification' (CPA) lasers, which have permitted peak laser powers to increase by more than three orders of magnitude, practically overnight. At Toronto, we have built a CPA laser system which produces a pulse a fraction of a picosecond in duration, but nonetheless contains more than a joule of energy-for a peak power greater than a trillion watts, and capable of a focussed intensity greater than 10 W cm One of the important aspects of the interaction of high-intensity laser light with matter, particularly solids, is the 'pulse contrast' a measure of the amount of energy deposited on the target before the arrival of the peak of the laser pulse. The output of the Toronto FCM-CPA terawatt laser is one of the most intrinsically 'clean' ultrahigh intensity pulses produced in this research field, due to two aspects of the oscillator. Our prototype or seed pulse is produced by a feedback-controlled oscillator, an active/passive modelocked, flashlamp-pumped Nd:glass system which produces a train of microjoule-energy 1 ps pulses. This pulse is grating-expanded, amplified and grating-compressed. Because the recompressed pulse cannot passively be improved over the original pulse, the very good contrast of the oscillator pulse is an important part of the system's final output characteristics. And because the energy of this pulse is several orders of magnitude greater than is typical for such CPA systems, less amplification is needed in the first stage, the regenerative amplifier. In this, the spectral characteristics of the pulse are less degraded, and, as well, less amplified spontaneous emission results, with the result that the background prepulse or pedestal of the final pulse is much improved.

Site Map Facilities We have some facilities for the synthesis and characterization of single crystals, thin films and nanostructures. They are designed to meet our needs to understand the properties and growth of some novel materials. They include a plasma-assisted pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) system, a pressurized reacting chamber, a thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system, and a plasma-enhanced CVD system (modified version of a plasma reference cell in the Dislocation Physics Laboratory ). This laboratory has a high-powered ultraviolet laser based on the fourth and fifth harmonic generation of an Nd:YAG laser. This is a nanosecond-pulsed laser integrated to our PLD system and is applicable for the characterization of novel photonics and nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. Other facilities include a Laser Guided Direct Writing (LGDW) system and Laser Guiding of Particles Through Fibers , which are used for the patterning and manipulation of nanostructures on substrates.

Extractions: A Bose-Einstein Condensate is an extraordinary new state of matter that owes its very existence to the quantum statistics of identical particles with integer spin quantum numbers. It was predicted theoretically by Bose and Einstein 70 years ago, but first observed in 1995. We have recently succeeded in producing a condensate, joining the small number of groups around the world which have also observed BEC. R aman L aser Raman lasers are different from most lasers because the pumping process is stimulated Raman scattering ; a coherent process which directly transfers the atom from the initial to the final state without occupying the intermediate excited state.
