Extractions: The mission the Space Physics Group at the University of Houston is to conduct original research in the areas of atmospheric electricity, upper atmospheric physics, atmospheric chemistry, space physics and aeronomy. The term space physics as used here incorporates the disciplines of ionospheric physics, magnetospheric physics, space plasma physics, solar heliospheric physics and cosmic rays physics. In addition, it is also the mission of the space physics group to provide instruction in these topics to the students of the University of Houston. The main objective of this aspect of our mission is providing a source of qualified, trained personnel to the space-oriented employers of the Houston area. Finally, it is the mission of the group to provide knowledgable consulting services in these areas and topics to all elements of the Houston community that request such support. As a group, we have conducted experiments to measure and image electron bremsstrahlung beneath auroras, to measure electron bremsstrahlung accompanying both natural and triggered VLF events, auroral zone electric fields, plasmapause electric fields, electric fields at high altitude due to thunderstorms, and the electromagnetic radiation spectrum of lightning at high altitude, VLF magnetic fields accompanying active experiments in the ionosphere, dc plasma properties in the ionosphere near pulsating aurora, ionospheric electric fields near the magnetospheric cusp, and ground level atmospheric electric field and air-Earth current at the South Pole.

INSPIRE also is an innovative, unique opportunity for students to actively gather data that might be used in a basic research project, as is being done with INSPIRE data taken during the 1992 flight of SEPAC (Space Experiments with Particle Accelerators) on ATLAS 1. Our eyes are only sensitive to a very narrow range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Like the dog that can hear sounds we can't, there is a large spectrum of electromagnetic waves we can not see. If we could see at very low frequencies, called VLF, we would be dazzled by electromagnetic emissions such as sferics, tweeks, whistlers, chorus, and many others. These are natural radio waves or emissions coming from such common phenomena as lightning, but there are also VLF emissions that reach the ground that come from ten's of thousands of miles from the Earth. VLF radio emissions are at such low frequencies that they can be received, amplified and turned into sound that we can hear. Each of the natural VLF radio emissions has a very distinctive sound. It is fun to listen to natural VLF emissions.

Extractions: Roger Smith's Home Page I am a professor of physics and associate director of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks most of the time. At other times, I sing tenor in the Tanana Flats barbershop quartet, lead in the Greatland Sounds Barbershop Chorus and tenor in the University Community Presbyterian Church Choir. Isa Smith, my wife, is a fiber artist who can be found most Wednesdays and some other days working at Hands All Around. I am also a fan of historic cars, having two of my own. They are both in need of restoration, but the 1936 Riley Kestrel runs well enough to drive around town. My 1967 Morris Traveller is waiting until its owner retires and has more time to devote to it. My research interest is the study of the dynamics of the high latitude upper atmosphere and also the high latitude aurora. You can look at some of my recent research work at item 1 below. I also run a summer intern program for undergraduates funded by the National Science Foundation . More information can be found about that at item 2 below. Recent papers which are in preparation or have been submitted to journals.
