Fundamental fluid dynamics investigates the underlying physics behind these flows. The applications for this research include such diverse areas as the flow of blood through the body, boundary-layer control on jet aircraft, and drag reduction on automobiles. At NWRA, we have concentrated on the study of flows that are stably stratified and sheared. Stratification means that the density of the fluid (air, water, or some other fluid) changes with height. When "stably stratified," the density at lower levels is greater than the density at higher levels. Shear means that the horizontal current changes with height. Recent measurements indicate that the atmosphere and the ocean are generally both stratified (usually stably stratified) and sheared. Thus, the studies we are performing are relevant to a wide variety of real geophysical flows. Image of a turbulent vortex ring propagating downward in a water tank. Fluorescent dye was introduced into the piston-type ring generator prior to its generation stroke. A sheet of blue laser light caused the dye in its path to fluoresce, exposing a cross section of the dye distribution within the ring and its turbulent wake. ONR-funded research at NWRA constitutes the first quantitative measurements of mass transport by vortex rings of varying Reynolds number. The Reynolds number (ratio of inertial to viscous effects in the fluid) of this ring was approximately 28,000.

Properties normally ascribed to fluids include density compressibility (sometimes specified in terms of the so-called second viscosity coefficient ), and dynamic viscosity . The Navier-Stokes equations are the fundamental partial differential equations that describe the fluid of incompressible fluids . For low Reynolds number (an important dimensionless parameter depending on flow speed, size of the fluid system, and viscosity that characterized the qualitative type of fluid motion that will occur), the inertia term in these equations is smaller than the viscous term and can therefore be ignored, leaving the so-called equation of creeping motion. In this regime, viscous interactions have an influence over large distances from an obstacle. For low Reynolds number flow at low pressure , the Navier-Stokes equation becomes a diffusion equation.
