Product Description
The finite-element method was originally developed by engineers in the 1950s to analyze large structural systems for aircraft. Aimed at advanced level undergraduates of engineering and fluid mechanics and researchers, engineers and scientists in fluid mechanics, mechanical and chemical engineering, this text derives, develops and applies finite-element solution methodology directly to the differential equation systems governing distinct and practical problem classes in fluid mechanics. It is principally a text on fluid mechanics and the theory of its computational simulation, for those with a basic interest in fluid mechanics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing introductory fluid mechanics book!
An excellent book for both introductory and certain advanced level fluid mechanics. Excellent coverage is given to fundamentals and the book is very easy to follow. The book gradually builds up the fundamentals to a point beyond which a student of flud mechanics can study advanced topics by himself. I would certainly recommend this book as reference for advance undergraduates and some graduate courses. Though this book may not suffice the needs of all advance topics, you may want to look at other fluid mechanics books for advance topics. Overall, an excellent introductory fluid mechanics book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Professor Helps A Lot
This text presents the topic of fluid mechanics rigorously using mathematical and physical intuition. Those who do not have a solid background in introductory and vector calculus and differential equations will have a tough time understanding the text. Moreover, though possible to completely understand everything with mathematics, readers must comprehend the physical processes taking place. It is quite easy to get lost in the proofs and developments in the book if the subject is treated with a passing glance. In short, though this is a very good book, reading and understanding will take a bit of effort. However, the intellectual gambits the author uses are well worth it.

Especially with the guidance of a decent professor well versed in the subject, this book can serve as a great source of theory and application in fluid mechanics.Personally, I took the class with Prof. Whitaker and his depth of understanding of this subject is astonishing.

Topics include hydrostatics; 1D, 2D laminar flow; shell balances; conservation laws of both linear and angular momentum; Cauchy's 1st and 2nd equations; Euler's 1st and 2nd laws; tensors; Navier-Stokes Eq.; Bernoulli's Eq.; boundary layer theory; turbulence; friction and drag; Prandtl mixing length theory; and more.

The material does show some age and there are a few errors in the book.

Product Description
The first objective of this introductory text is to familiarize students who have been exposed to only one course on fluids with the basic elements of fluid mechanics so that, in the event that their future work relies on occasional numerical solutions, they will be familiar with the jargon of the discipline and the expected results. At the same time, this book can serve as a long-term reference text, contrary to the oversimplified approach occasionally used for such introductory courses. The second objective is to provide a comprehensive foundation for more advanced courses in fluid mechanics (within disciplines such as mechanical or aerospace engineering). In order to avoid confusing the students, the governing equations are introduced early, and the assumptions leading to the various models are clearly presented. This provides a logical hierarchy and explains the interconnectivity between the various models. Supporting examples demonstrate the principles and provide engineering analysis tools for many engineering calculations. ... Read more

Product Description

An environmental interface is defined as a surface between two abiotic or biotic systems, in relative motion and exchanging mass, heat and momentum through biophysical and/or chemical processes. These processes fluctuate temporally and spatially. The book first treats exchange processes occurring at the interfaces between atmosphere and the surface of the sea, and atmosphere and land surface. These exchanges include the effect of vegetation, transport of dust and dispersion of passive substances within the atmosphere. Processes at the environmental interfaces of freshwater, such as gas-transfer at free-surfaces of rivers, advective diffusion of air bubbles in turbulent water flows and boundary-layers phenomena in vegetated open channels are also described. Finally, the book deals with the phenomena that affect transport of material to and from the surface of an organism, including molecular and turbulent diffusion. The relevant issues related to mass transfer to and from benthic plants and animals are further considered in detail. The book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in environmental sciences, civil engineering and environmental engineering, (geo)physics and applied mathematics.

Product Description
This book serves as a complete and self-contained introduction to the principles of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis. It is deliberately short (at approximately 300 pages) and can be used as a text for the first part of the course of applied CFD followed by a software tutorial. The main objectives of this non-traditional format are: 1) To introduce and explain, using simple examples where possible, the principles and methods of CFD analysis and to demystify the `black box’ of a CFD software tool, and 2) To provide a basic understanding of how CFD problems are set and which factors affect the success and failure of the analysis. Included in the text are the mathematical and physical foundations of CFD, formulation of CFD problems, basic principles of numerical approximation (grids, consistency, convergence, stability, and order of approximation, etc), methods of discretization with focus on finite difference and finite volume techniques, methods of solution of transient and steady state problems, commonly used numerical methods for heat transfer and fluid flows, plus a brief introduction into turbulence modeling.  A solutions manual will be provided for instructor's use. ... Product Description
Introduction to Fluid Mechanics is a mathematically efficientintroductory text for a basal course in mechanical engineering. Morerigorous than existing texts in the field, it is also distinguished bythe choice and order of subject matter, its careful derivation andexplanation of the laws of fluid mechanics, and its attention toeveryday examples of fluid flow and common engineering applications.Beginning with the simple and proceeding to the complex, the textintroduces the principles of fluid mechanics in orderly steps. At eachstage practical engineering problems are solved, principally inengineering systems such as dams, pumps, turbines, pipe flows, propellers, and jets, but with occasional illustrations fromphysiological and meteorological flows. The approach builds on thestudent's experience with everyday fluid mechanics, showing how thescientific principles permit a quantitative understanding of what ishappening and provide a basis for designing engineering systems thatachieve the desired objectives. Introduction to Fluid Mechanics differsfrom most engineering texts in several respects: The derivations of thefluid principles (especially the conservation of energy) are completeand correct, but concisely given through use of the theorems of vectorcalculus. This saves considerable time and enables the student tovisualize the significance of these principles. More attention thanusual is given to unsteady flows and their importance in pipe flow andexternal flows. Finally, the examples and exercises illustrate realengineering situations, including physically realistic values of theproblem variables. Many of these problems require calculation ofnumerical values, giving the student experience in judging thecorrectness of his or her numerical skills. ... Read more

Product Description
This text is intended for the study of fluid mechanics at an intermediate level. The presentation starts with basic concepts, in order to form a sound conceptual structure that can support engineering applications and encourage further learning. The presentation is exact, incorporating both the mathematics involved and the physics needed to understand the various phenomena in fluid mechanics.Where a didactical choice must be made between the two, the physics prevails. Throughout the book the authors have tried to reach a balance between exact presentation, intuitive grasp of new ideas, and creative applications of concepts. This approach is reflected in the examples presented in the text and in the exercises given at the end of each chapter. Subjects treated are hydrostatics, viscous flow, similitude and order of magnitude, creeping flow, potential flow, boundary layer flow, turbulent flow, compressible flow, and non-Newtonian flows. This book is ideal for advanced undergraduate students in mechanical, chemical, aerospace, and civil engineering.Solutions manual available. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Straight Forward Fluid Mechanics
I have read the other reviews of this book and it is obvious there are conflicting feelings about the material contained in this book.I personally feel this book is a good quality and very useful to a practicingengineer. The book is sometimes a little unclear as to where some of theequations come from or how to read a diagram.I had the privledge oftaking this class at Texas A&M from Dr. Ron Darby (the author).Histeaching styles are 'old school' but very effective. He and his book makethe student THINK about what the answer is.Having taken the class fromDr. Darby, I know clearly where all its equations come from and everythingprinted in the book is accurate.Dr. Ron Darby is an extremely competentindividual and any reader who doesn't understand the book is probablylooking for someone to give them the answer rather than think forthemselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text and reference book for engineers.
The course taught from this book was the most useful course I have taken. The book covers a wide range of topics including Newtonian andnon-Newtonian fluids and gases, pipes and fittings, pumps and compressors, meters and control valves, filters, centrifuges, settlers, etc.The bookis clearly written and emphasizes the solution of practical fluids problemsstarting from first principles. There are many challenging problems whichdeal with "real world" situations - not the idealized orhypothetical problems you see in a lot of books.I use this book more onthe job than any of the books that I had for courses in school. There werea few typos in the first printing, but these have been corrected in thelater printings.I highly recommend the book for both students andpractising engineers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly presented, poorly formatted, full of errors.
I used the book for my introductory fluid mechanincs class, and my peers unanimously agreed that this book was the worst book they had ever used for a class. Equations come from nowhere, and practice problems appear beforeany discussion of material needed to solve them. There are no colordiagrams, and the B&W ones that are there are are crude and confusing. The book is full of typographical errors. According to my professor for theclass, although he didn't like this book either, it was better than theothers available in this subject.I shudder to think that a book could beless useful than this one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice but incomplete
A very nice history of fluids and the scientists who
have studied and marveled about fluids. Its only
real shortcoming is that it was written in 1971 and
so many fascinating subjects are therefore missing.
This book contains a handfull of equations, most
simple but a differential equation appears here and
there, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Historical episodes but without physical insight.
I bought this book hoping for an undemanding, intuitive, intro to fluid physics. Was sorely disappointed. The author does highlight somecurious episodes in the history of fluids, and agitates for the priority claims ofcertain under-rated scientists. He does quote from some of the seminalpapers, e.g., those of Archimedes, Newton, etc.But his commentary doesnot in any wise help even a trained theoretical physicist to decipher thephysics behind these arcane old documents.I had to struggle entirely onmy own, since his physical remarks added zero to my understanding.Don'tread this expecting any Feynmanesque ability to shed a keen light on theprocesses or equations--Tokaty is no help at all.The author's historicalaccount, though vigorous and polemical, may be lacking in accuracy, e.g.,he completely confuses the great thermodynamicist Sadi Carnot with hispolitician father!! So don't expect much beyond a colorful mix of keyhistorical developments.Figures and photos are a plus. ... Read more

Product Description
Fluid mechanics is often seen as the most difficult core subject encountered by engineering students. The problem stems from the necessity to visualise complex flow patterns and fluid behaviour modelled by high level mathematics. This text overcomes this difficulty by introducing the concepts through everyday examples, before moving on to the more involved mathematics. The various theories of flow have been correlated with real phenomena and, combined with numerous figures and photographs, help the reader place the subject in context. Examples from a broad range of engineering disciplines are included making this textbook suitable for all engineers studying fluid systems as part of their degree.

'Introduction to Fluid Mechanics' is translated from the best-selling Japanese book by Professor Yasuki Nakayama, and adapted for the international market by Professor Robert Boucher.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Author
I have been teaching biomedical fluid mechanics at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for the past 20 years and had been a little disappointed that I couldn't find a truly interdisciplinary book that combined engineering fluid mechanics with the physiological aspects of the topic. I searched for a book that contained information about topics like prosthetic heart valves, prosthetic arteries, and pulsatile flow, and was also readable by undergraduate engineering students. Biofluid Mechanics in Cardiovascular Systems was my first attempt to do those things; it sold well so McGraw-Hill asked me to write the textbook version - Applied Biofluid Mechanics.

Applied Biofluid Mechanics contains two chapters that are explicitly devoted to cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology, as well as one chapter devoted to hematology (the study of blood). I used Biofluid Mechanics in Cardiovascular Systems as a textbook in my fluid mechanics course last fall, and it was well received by the students. Applied Biofluid Mechanics is a much improved textbook with review problem sets for each chapter, an on-line solutions manual, on-line photomicrographs, many more example problems, and expanded overall coverage. - Lee Waite
