Product Description
An Introduction to Fluid Mechanics provides a balanced and uniquely visual treatment of the tools used in solving modern fluid mechanics problems. Presenting an image-intensive approach to fluid dynamics through classic kinematic concepts, the book demonstrates the importance of flow visualization in a framework of modern experimental techniques and flow simulation. Detailed photographs and diagrams of fluid motions and phenomena throughout the text help students to see and understand why equations change drastically for different types of flows. Output illustrations from CFD (computational fluid dynamics) programs illustrate the possibilities of flow behavior, enabling students to concentrate on ideas instead of mathematics. The book also provides the means to solve interesting problems early in the course by presenting case studies at the beginning of the text. These cases are revisited later to reinforce empirical rules and help explain advanced methods of analyzing a flow. Creating a foundation for further study in this important and exciting field, An Introduction to Fluid Mechanics is ideal for a first course in fluid mechanics. The book is designed to accommodate students concentrating in mechanical engineering as well as those in the civil, aerospace, and chemical engineering fields. Features BLA highly organized 2-color interior and icons throughout the text aid in navigation and review. 3-0 out of 5 stars Brand new product by Oxford Univ Press worth looking at! <1>
The first phrase you read when opening the book is "This book is intended primarily for use in a one-quarter or one-semester introductory fluid mechanics course". And it hits the nail on the head. Shaughnessy1 tries to give a balanced introduction to all the tools used for solving FM problems today (analytical, empirical, experimental, computational tools) and succeeds so in the first 70%; the rest is too concise even for a so-called 'introduction'. But how are 1042pages (the thickest FM textbook on the market!) filled if the material doesnt cover as many subjects as other introtexts (FoxMcDonald6) and the last 30% are superficial and shallow? The answer is by picking the fundamentals to pieces. Many pieces. And afterwards blowing them up (~gremlins plus water). You cant reach true depth with this method, but the target readership would not care! If you are a FoxMcDonald6-user, taking a two-quarters course in Fluid Mechanics, and somewhat unhappy with Fox's depiction of the fundamentals because of the little given prose and theory, then a borrowed copy of Shaughnessy1 is among the Top3 choices to relieve you of the pain and shame with your purchased Fox6. Both self-called "Introduction to Fluid Mechanics"-introtexts are marvellous books for total subject beginners to learn from: from Shaughnessy1's prose and CD-ROM, or from Fox6's examples and problems. There is definitely enough to appreciate about our book, so here a representative extract of Pro's:
+ "PartI" broken into many unusual (superbasic) parts: whole chapters devoted to Fluid Properties (Ch02), Flow Visualization (Ch10), Velocity Field (Ch06), Fluid Forces (Ch04) and Case Studies (Ch03), which are usually found combined in other texts, in a "Chapter1 Introduction". Yet, for the novice a rock solid, thorough and welcome introduction to FM ideas! Personally I liked this high degree of picking to pieces very much. Indeed the best part of the book: the first 70% of the book material is highly successful! recommended reading.
+ simple outputs from commercial CFD codes
+ visual icons (CFD, FE-Exam, CD, resources)
+ 644MB multilingual Hybrid CD-ROM stuffed with hundreds of animations and videos, and supplementary reading material, all to be accessed thru a beautiful, modern GUI. very slow application (or is it just my P1? ;-) but the CD content is a top-quality crafted piece of usefulness. Finally a (highly) useful accompanying book CD-ROM! (compare with CDs in Fox6 and FMWhite5 LOL. Cengel1 is accompanied by a DVD, but I dont have a DVD drive sorry). Get a copy of this CD in any case! A former version of it is available separately from Stanford University published by Cambridge University Press.
+ fresh, modern layout; superb, beautifully crafted, helpful 3D-illustrations demonstrating high level of graphics communication skills and mechanical engineering professionalism. serious technical figures (rather than the lavish, non-serious and non-technical 3D-drawings in Cengel1).
+ diverse grey and blue colours and halftones. makes impression of a multi-coloured, expensive book. attractive look, inside and outside. many and superb photographs.
+ tight, unrivalled top quality paper. valuable, pleasant touch&feel guaranteed. you can feel all the money you have spent for this brand new product
+ chapters with *good* examples are Fluid Statics (Ch05), Control Volume Analysis (Ch07), and Flow Visualization (Ch10). comes close to competing texts. good!
+ a whole chapter on fluid forces (Ch04). careful development of stress vector(!) and stress tensor, incl divergence of stress tensor. intro to symbolic tensor algebra and symbolic tensor calculus with use of matrix notation, unit dyads and dyadic products. successful, short chapter!
+ intense treatment of Fluid Statics (Ch05). Maybe not the best, but one of the *finest* I have ever seen. recommended reading!
+ the full chapter on velocity fields (Ch06) includes "General Method to Evaluate a Flux Integral", a careful procedure shown how to calculate any (vector) flux through a closed surface. excellent chapter subsections (as with other chapters!), e.g. on convective transport and then on diffusive transport.
+ practical, helpful text talks to the student, guides him through the subject matter and the solving of problematic situations, and draws attention to hairy points, possible students' sources of errors. all in an integrated flow. i like it, although i like other approaches in a non-integrated, more systematic presentation as well. the main thing is if the author did it *successfully*. And Shaughnessy did!
+ intense treatment of Control Volume Analysis (Ch07). Maybe not the best, but one of the *finest* I have ever seen. recommended reading!
+ end-of-chapter summaries are fine (but the finest are seen in Shames4!), noteworthy.
+ in every chapter explicit use of vectors and vector calculus incl. vector integral equations and vector differential equations. nothing advanced, yet nice to see this kind of stuffz in a Purely-An-Intro text. foolproof calculations, no more errors with signs! vector equations instead of the irritating (scalar) component equations. Lovely. Really lovely.
+ use of cylindrical coordinates almost in every corner. even in tensor matrices.
+ chapter 10 (Elements of Flow Visualization and Flow Structure) is a marvellous broad introduction to basic concepts! much breadth with sufficient depth. explains *separately* in excellent, independent chapter subsections: Eulerian kinematics, Langrangian kinematics, material/path/streak/stream/time lines, velocity gradient tensor, rate of rotation/sheardeformation/expansion/strain tensors, vorticity, circulation, dilation, deformation etc. Supported by maaany useful, nice animations and videos on the CD-ROM.
+ chapter 11 is clear and complete but a rather concise treatment of the "Governing Equations of Fluid Dynamics". Includes also energy equation, cylindrical coordinates, dissipation function, and nondimensionalization, stuff which misses frequently in other introtexts. unfortunately there are not enough examples and problems to illustrate and support the treated, important material.
+ clarity. hard to say whether the monumental length of fundamentals (Ch01-Ch11: 700pages) accounts for breadth or rather its depth because the stuff is all basic, but the author succeeds to present everything in a remarkably clear manner. No sweepiness as in Cengel1's, but all in all crisp clarity in presentation, prose and equations. Contrary to its length! :-O ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be your first CFD book.
This is an excellent book for beginners.Anyone with some fluid dynamics and basic mathematics background will enjoy reading the book.It is an excellent resource for people not specializing in this area but would like to get some good ideas on the inner workings of CFD.But do not expect see more advanced topics or techniques covered by this book. But the book is not intended for that purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars The basic of CFD
I found the basic knowledge for understanding the computational fluid dynamics. If you have "computational fluid dynamics, Hypersonic and high temperature of gas dynamic" and a software for solve linear system and EDO( like Mathenatica), you could make computational fluid dynamic. Also clarify "Time-dependent approach to the steady state","classification of quasi-linear partial differential equations","Implicit and Explicit methods","Boundary-fitted coordinate","Time and space marching".

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic
I am presently in my 4th year of a PhD in Astrophysics. While my background in the analytic portion of Fluid Dynamics is strong my understanding of how one discretizes and solves these equations numerically is somewhat lacking.

I picked this book up as a starting point to more complicated methods and found it to be, hands down, one of the best texts I have ever read.It presents the material in a concise, clear, and physically motivated fashion which makes learning the topic incredibly straightforward.

While this book is only a 'kicking off' point for more advanced techniques I think it is a must read for beginners and intermediate users. For the first timer to CFD the book will get you started down the right path armed with all the preliminary tools. For the more advanced user it will put aspects of the topic into an easier to understand light and perhaps shed more light on fundamentals that were presented poorly elsewhere.

I'd give it ten stars, it's allowed me to crack into the code I'm using and really understand why it works as well as having set me down the path to a more advanced level of understanding of CFD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Computational Fluid Dynamics
This is a very easy book to read.Anderson not only explains the computational methods, he covers the basics and explains the relevance of the equations and terms. This book addresses the needs for people with little background on this subject.I recommend it for any novice interested in obtaining a basic introduction to CFD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
If you want to learn CFD from the beginning, you must buy this book. It is simply the BEST, and I hadn't enjoyed reading a technical book since long time ago. ... Read more

Product Description

The contents of this book covers the material required in the Fluid Mechanics Graduate Core Course (MEEN-621) and in Advanced Fluid Mechanics, a Ph.D-level elective course (MEEN-622), both of which I have been teaching at Texas A&M University for the past two decades. While there are numerous undergraduate fluid mechanics texts on the market for engineering students and instructors to choose from, there are only limited texts that comprehensively address the particular needs of graduate engineering fluid mechanics courses. To complement the lecture materials, the instructors more often recommend several texts, each of which treats special topics of fluid mechanics. This circumstance and the need to have a textbook that covers the materials needed in the above courses gave the impetus to provide the graduate engineering community with a coherent textbook that comprehensively addresses their needs for an advanced fluid mechanics text. Although this text book is primarily aimed at mechanical engineering students, it is equally suitable for aerospace engineering, civil engineering, other engineering disciplines, and especially those practicing professionals who perform CFD-simulation on a routine basis and would like to know more about the underlying physics of the commercial codes they use. Furthermore, it is suitable for self study, provided that the reader has a sufficient knowledge of calculus and differential equations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Iris
I read this book the first time 7 years ago; It has a different approachin evaluating flow through orifices, or has good formulas to calculate internal leakage in a spool valve when the spool is centered, or in the case it is eccentric.
The book is very good to understand the basics; unfortunately most hydraulic systems today are so complex, these type of analysis are better done with good software; in order to provide the correct boundary conditions for the analysis, you need to have a good understanding of the basics; the phenomenons that are happening within your hydraulic component.
This is a very good book to study and understand before going forward. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even worth messing with.
This book is horrible. If you are any where near being a hands on engineer then this is not the book for you. I have just started taking the class that requires this text and already everyone in my class is stumped. First homework assignment class average 1/10. How sad is that. Aviod this book at all cost.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Book is OK
The Book is quite ok forintroductory courses as well as applications in Hydraulics. It is biased towards civil engineering and in my opinion is a book worthy to purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars I suffered this one...but...
Okay, I am an engineer who suffered this book through three- count 'em- fluid mehcanics subjects (Fluids I, II and yes, you guessed it, III! ah the pretentions of roman numerals should have warned me...alas I digress...)

Okay the fact is with this book you need three things to make it work: 1) a damn good lecturer, 2) Some effort to do the problems and 3)Schaum's solved problems in fluid mechanics or something similiar.

I do disagree that it is impossible. Or REALLY hard or written to impress his professor friends...it just requires some thought...Like anything of a less common nature...less people are going to understand it. That's the nature of the beast! Sure there are many places where it falls down...particularly in the first three chapters. But later on it becomes quite good. From chapter 3 onwards it is a useful work, particularly in Part 2 on applications of fluid mechanics.

Covers: fluid propoerties (very briefly!), Fluid statics (need the ability to do vectors to be able to do this chapter!), Fluid flow (calculus required!). Dimensional Similitude (this is cool stuff...), Fluid resistance, Compressible flow and Ideal fluid flow...comprise part 1. Part 2 is Fluid Measurement (ie. Weirs, Turbulence, viscosity, pressure, orifices...etc), Turbomachinery, Closed conduit flow, Open channel flow (not bad either), unsteady flow (good old waterhammer! How to stop water hammer when you turn on a tap/faucet...turn on another one at the same time of the same heat- hot or cold!) and some appendices on mathematical techniques: SImpsons rule, Bisection method, Newton-Raphson, Runge-Kutta and physical propoerties of some fluids. Answers (not worked) are provided from even numbered questions.

Put it this way: if you can work through this book then you KNOW you understand fluid mechanics, so in that respect it gets a third star: it's a good yardstick of your ability. But for all that it is very disheartening, as it always is, to learn that one may not be a clever as one things one is and this is a book to expose shortcomings such as these. COnsider a challenge book: like everest...see the hill take the hill and then jeer it because you've bested it. Guess this book just takes that kind of person: pesistant, dogged and damn sure not to let it beat them.

If you're a casual learner or not so keen on challenger yourself with something so tragic as fluid mechanics...avoid this book like the plague because you'll waste your money and probably damage something when you hurl the book with frustration!

Hope that helps...:)

4-0 out of 5 stars not that bad...
This book does seem to cover material in reasonable detail which makes for a better understanding of the basic concepts. Perhaps it could be written more lucidly but I don't think it's as bad as one star. I might change my mind after I read a few more chapters....!

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth buying !
Streeter wrote this book to impress other professors only. The target of this book is for lecturer, not for college students. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for fluid mechanics
I bought the 1st ed. (1970) which suprisingly seems identical in much of the content to the 3rd (2004) as a suppliment to a truely horrible book. This book seems to elaborate on many topics, qualitative and quantitative, that either aren't covered or only "covered"in other books. Not sure why its "for Chemical Engineers" as much of the material seems to be general fluid mechanics applicable to many other fields.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good....
This book is bad.

In equation developments, it uses cartesian coordinates in a funky way.It changes them! This might not be a problem, but this book uses coordinate systems that don't follow the right-hand rule. For me this was very disturbing, because throughout my education the right-hand rule for coordinate systems was God's word.

Another thing is the example problems. When the book shows you the solution, it jumps right into numbers, without even showing you the symbolic development, or what numbers represent what variables. It expects you to infer this from the units!

N.B. I've only read the first 50 pages or so of this book, and my frustration led me to write this review. My opinions aren't supported with a complete sense of the book. Then again, the fact that even the elementary, development part of the book frustrates me could show just how bad this book will become in the latter parts.

2-0 out of 5 stars it is too superficial book.
Now , I study fluid mechanics twice. First time , I didn't know , superficial or detail. But I feel now It is too superficial about fluid mechanics. 3-0 out of 5 stars Useful
This book is useful for quick references but I wouldn't depend on it to pass a Fluid Mechanics course.

3-0 out of 5 stars A new cover to an old book
I have this book first edition; this third edition is not much different from the first one. No CFD, no computer applications and almost the same subjects of 30 years ago. The chapters about MHD, non-newtonian flows and hyper-sonic flows are all but too short; they are almost useless.
There is a new chapter about waves which figures are not as good as the older ones.
Well, the book is cheap and certainly worths the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars MHD, turbulence, boundary layers...
Fluid mechanics is a vast field. It can be considered a branch of applied physics. Highly mathematical, as can be seen in the problems given in this book by Hughes. He takes you through the field, giving the salient equations used to describe various fluid phenomena.

Foremost amongst these is the Navier-Stokes equation. A nonlinear partial differential equation that describes the balancing or conservation of momentum and energy in a fluid. Most of fluid mechanics builds on Navier-Stokes. So you need to get your understanding of it down pat. The problems given for these should be tackled and hopefully solved by you, before going onto later sections in the book. You need a solid grasp of this. It can makethe rest much easier.

Other chapters describe various important special cases. Like incompressible flow. Or one dimensional flow of a fluid that is compressible. Then expanding this discussion into 2 dimensions.

Boundary layer problems are also heavily studied. Important in practice, because these relate to the designing of surfaces of planes or boats or missiles. Which leads naturally into problems of turbulence.

Then what if the fluid is charged? Electromagnetic effects [currents] then come into consideration. So Hughes devotes a chapter to magnetohydrodynamics. Students of nuclear fusion or stellar evolution may find this chapter germane.

Overall, Hughes gives a broad span of the field. Many problems to sharpen your understanding. ... Read more

Product Description
This is an introductory textbook on the geometrical theory of dynamical systems, fluid flows and certain integrable systems. The topics are interdisciplinary and extend from mathematics, mechanics and physics to mechanical engineering, and the approach is very fundamental. The main theme of this book is a unified formulation to understand dynamical evolutions of physical systems within mathematical ideas of Riemannian geometry and Lie groups by using well-known examples. Underlying mathematical concepts include transformation invariance, covariant derivative, geodesic equation and curvature tensors on the basis of differential geometry, theory of Lie groups and integrability. These mathematical theories are applied to physical systems such as free rotation of a top, surface wave of shallow water, action principle in mechanics, diffeomorphic flow of fluids, vortex motions and some integrable systems. In the latest edition, a new formulation of fluid flows is also presented in a unified fashion on the basis of the gauge principle of theoretical physics and principle of least action along with new type of Lagrangians. A great deal of effort has been directed toward making the description elementary, clear and concise, to provide beginners easy access to the topics. ... Read more

Product Description
The eighth edition of this best-selling textbook, like its predecessors, presents the basic principles of the mechanics of fluids in a thorough and clear manner. The book contains material on this subject appropriate to an honors degree course in mechanical engineering.

Particular emphasis is given to providing a sound physical understanding of fluid flow and its engineering applications. Relevant mathematical techniques are also covered. Students are introduced systematically to the subject, the text moving from the simple to the complex, from the familiar to the unfamiliar. SI units are used throughout and there are many worked examples. The breadth of coverage of this edition is similar to that of the previous edition, but the content has been fully revised and updated, and several new topics are introduced for the first time. For professors, a solutions manual is available to accompany this text. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars some harder problems?
Perhaps the problems could be harder? Some of them, at least. The good thing is that there are indeed many problems offered to the student. Varying in difficulty. However, some better students may bewail the lack of sufficiently challenging obstacles. Oh well.

As to the text - Ward-Smith certainly covers many aspects of fluid mechanics. For an honours level course, the mathematical treatment is appropriately advanced. It seems that the differences with the 7th edition are fairly minimal. If you are not required to get this 8th edition, then an earlier edition might suffice (and be cheaper). ... Read more

Product Description

The ability to understand the area of fluid mechanics is enhanced by using equations to mathematically model those phenomena encountered in everyday life. Helping those new to fluid mechanics make sense of its concepts and calculations, Introduction to Fluid Mechanics, Fourth Edition makes learning a visual experience by introducing the types of problems that students are likely to encounter in practice – and then presenting methods to solve them.

A time-tested book that has proven useful in various fluid mechanics and turbomachinery courses, this volume assumes knowledge of calculus and physics in its use of mathematics to model physical principles in fluid mechanics. Among its many useful features, this book:

  • Updates advances and relevant examples
  • Introduces concepts of fluid statics and control/volume approach of determining flow
  • Carefully explains topics using step-by-step examples
  • Emphasizes applications areas, with extensive resources for design problems
  • Uses both SI units and British gravitational units
  • Includes computer and design problems formulated for use with a spreadsheet in any of the traditional programming languages

The author includes open-ended chapter-end problems designed to systematically improve the students’ ability to understand and apply the equations of fluid mechanics to various practical problems associated with scenarios such as flow from a draining coffee pot or drag force exerted on a bicycle-rider combination. Problems are arranged so that the easier ones are presented first, to build students’ confidence and aid learning, and these problems are grouped by topic, making them easier to use for both instructors and students.

With an abundance of new material, this book is a thorough and comprehensible presentation of fluid mechanics from a practical viewpoint, rather than an encyclopedic and inaccessible volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
The book took the whole two weeks to arrive, but still arrived on time.Used book is in good condition with only some underlining and notes written inside.Great Deal!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Condition
My Process Fluid Mechanics book was n great condition. It looked like it was brand new. I ended up saving money buying it from Amazon rather than buying it from the school book store.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inaccessible
Denn's text is much shorter than most introductions to fluid mechanics, but he seems to have left out all of the material that would make the topicinteresting and accessible to the novice. The topics are well-ordered andhave a logical progression, but almost all of the explanatory matter ismissing. It is extremely difficult to get a conceptual understanding offluid dynamics by looking at page after page of variable manipulation.Inaddition, the index is so incomplete as to be useless; most of the termsone would look up are not listed, or point only to the page where it wascursorily defined.

That said, this book can be salvaged for a class by aprofessor who is skilled at conveying concepts (rather than justequations.)I also suspect this book would be useful as a reference forthose who have already learned the fundamental material. However, Irecommend that the novice look elsewhere for a satisfactory introduction tofluid mechanics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pedagogically logical;ordered progression of concepts
Denn's book is an excellent introductory text for chemical engineering fluid mechanics. The book starts off with the basics of dim-analysis and proceeds into macro and then micro problems. This is a very logicalordering and allows the student to see the subject from a broaderperspective instead of getting bogged down in the systematics of theproblems themselves.A careful reading is definitely needed to get themost out of the book, though. And the section on turbulence is a bitunclear.Overall, though, a good book to keep for many years to come as achem eng.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate coverage of chemical engineering fluid mechanics
"Process Fluid Mechanics" is a very satisfactory introductory text on chemical engineering fluid mechanics. Denn shows the basics of fluid mechanics in a concise, mathematical, and theoretical manner. A must-have for any beginning chemcical engineering fluid mechanics class. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars No problems
Needed this for some extra text for a class. So far it's been helpful: glad I got it here!

1-0 out of 5 stars I hope you have his phone number
This was the worst book on rotating machinery that I ever picked up. Hard to follow and poorly organized, perhaps designed for the intended course work, I would not recommend that it as any reference value.
His flat theory also neglects changes in units. Which he uses outside of his own definitions in the prologue.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very complete textbook
We were asked to buy this book by a teacher, it was certainly a good choice, perhaps the information given is too dense but I did enjoy studying with it.
