Product Description
This treatment of potential theory emphasizes the effects of an external field (or weight) on the minimum energy problem. Several important aspects of the external field problem (and its extension to signed measures) justify its special attention. The most striking is that it provides a unified approach to seemingly different problems in constructive analysis. These include the asymptotic analysis of orthogonal polynomials, the limited behavior of weighted Fekete points; the existence and construction of fast decreasing polynomials; the numerical conformal mapping of simply and doubly connected domains; generalization of the Weierstrass approximation theorem to varying weights; and the determination of convergence rates for best approximating rational functions. ... Product Description
The spectral theory of Schrödinger operators, in particular those with random potentials, continues to be a very active field of research. This work focuses on various known criteria in the spectral theory of selfadjoint operators in order to identify the spectrum and its components à la Lebesgue decomposition.Key features and topics:* Well-developed exposition of criteria that are especially useful in determining the spectra of deterministic and random Schrödinger operators occurring in quantum theory* Systematically uses measures and their transforms (Fourier, Borel, wavelet) to present a unifying theme* Establishes criteria for identifying the spectrum* Examines a series of applications to show point spectrum and continuous spectrum in some models of random operators* Presents a series of spectral-theoretic results for the perturbed operators introduced in the earlier chapters with examples of localization and delocalization in the theory of disordered systems* Presents modern criteria (using wavelet transform, eigenfunction decay) that could be used to do spectral theory* Unique work in book form combining the presentation of the deterministic and random cases, which will serve as a platform for further research activitiesThis concise unified presentation is aimed at graduate students and researchers working in the spectral theory of Schrödinger operators with either fixed or random potentials in particular. However, given the large gap that this book fills in the literature, it will serve a wider audience of mathematical physicists in its contribution to works in spectral theory. ... Read more

Product Description

Quadrature domains were singled out about 30 years ago by D. Aharonov and H.S. Shapiro in connection with an extremal problem in function theory. Since then, a series of coincidental discoveries put this class of planar domains at the center of crossroads of several quite independent mathematical theories, e.g., potential theory, Riemann surfaces, inverse problems, holomorphic partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, operator theory. The volume is devoted to recent advances in the theory of quadrature domains, illustrating well the multi-facet aspects of their nature. The book contains a large collection of open problems pertaining to the general theme of quadrature domains.

Product Description

In this book an account of the growth theory of subharmonic functions is given, which is directed towards its applications to entire functions of one and several complex variables.

The presentation aims at converting the noble art of constructing an entire function with prescribed asymptotic behaviour to a handicraft. For this one should only construct the limit set that describes the asymptotic behaviour of the entire function.

All necessary material is developed within the book, hence it will be most useful as a reference book for the construction of entire functions.

Product Description
This self-contained book provides a basic foundation for students, practitioners, and researchers interested in some of the diverse new areas of multiscale (geo)potential theory. New mathematical methods are developed enabling the gravitational potential of a planetary body to be modeled and analyzed using a continuous flow of observations from land or satellite devices. Harmonic wavelet methods are introduced, as well as fast computational schemes and various numerical test examples.

The work is divided into two main parts: Part I treats well-posed boundary-value problems of potential theory and elasticity; Part II examines ill-posed problems such as satellite-to-satellite tracking, satellite gravity gradiometry, and gravimetry. Both sections demonstrate how multiresolution representations yield Runge-Walsh type solutions that are both accurate in approximation and tractable in computation.

Topic and key features:

* Comprehensive coverage of topics which, thus far, are only scattered in journal articles and conference proceedings

* Important applications and developments for future satellite scenarios; new modelling techniques involving low-orbiting satellites

* Multiscale approaches for numerous geoscientific problems, including geoidal determination, magnetic field reconstruction, deformation analysis, and density variation modelling

* Multilevel stabilization procedures for regularization

* Treatment of the real Earth's shape as well as a spherical Earth model

* Modern methods of constructive approximation

* Exercises at the end of each chapter and an appendix with hints to their solutions

Models and methods presented show how various large- and small-scale processes may be addressed by a single geoscientific modelling framework for potential determination. "Multiscale Potential Theory" may be used as a textbook for graduate-level courses in geomathematics, applied mathematics, and geophysics. The book is also an up-to-date reference text for geoscientists, applied mathematicians, and engineers. ... Read more

This text takes the student with a background in undergraduate physics and mathematics towards the skills and insights needed for graduate work in theoretical physics. The author uses Green's functions to explore the physics of potentials, diffusion, and waves. These are important phenomena in their own right, but this study of the partial differential equations describing them also prepares the student for more advanced applications in many-body physics and field theory. Calculations are carried through in enough detail for self-study, and case histories illustrate the interplay between physical insight and mathematical formalism. The aim is to develop the habit of dialogue with the equations and the craftsmanship this fosters in tackling the problem. The book is based on the author's extensive teaching experience. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
The book is very good to teach engineers about Green's functions, who are not interested in all the abstract mathematical proofs and rigor. I used it as a text book for an advanced mathematics course for engineers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly accessible and practiacally organized.
The content is well organized: you don't have to read the whole book to extract the information you need.Personally, I needed to find a Green's function for a modified diffusion equation with an unusual set of boundry/intial value conditions.Reading chapters 8,9 made this task very simple.Addionally, the author makes liberal use of the propagator, making this book ideal for physicists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully presents GF for 3 classic equations.Well done!
Designed for senior-level or first-year graduate students, Barton's bookis a beautiful introduction to the classic analytical method of Green's functions (GF). Much of the information here is available in applied mathsources, but Barton has pulled information together that is par ticularyuseful for physicists and engineers. The book was intended as a text butis comprehensive enough to serve as a reference. The advantage of themethod of GF is that there is a unique GF for each geometry. If you havethe GF, then you can solve any problem on that geometry by evaluating anintegral equation.Barton calls this integral equation the "magicrule". The book begins with a very nice introduction to the Diracdelta function. The book covers three classic linear partial differentialequations: Poisson equation, heat equation, and wave equation. Since thecharacter of these equations is quite different, the GF is introduced foreach equation.Several methods are shown for finding GF's and using themto solve problems, some of which are quite advanced. Some GF's are givenscattered throughout the book. There are several appendices for advancedtopics. ... Read more

Product Description
The contemporary ideas about the theory of atomic properties of metals are reviewed in this book. This theory is based upon concepts of pseudopotential and interacting electrons and is used for quantitative description of the whole complex of atomic properties of perfect simple metals.
The authors have tried to maintain the consonance of the theoretical description of metal properties with computer experiment. A well-advanced theory with many new developments is presented, as well as simple and well-known theoretical approaches necessary for computer calculation. The background of the theory of atomic properties of crystals is addressed alongside the theory of pseudopotential form-factor in metals and the linear screening theory.
This book will be useful for specialists in the theory and computer simulation of properties of solids. ... Read more

Product Description
The main goal of this book is to help people understand and see the full power, scope and value of hypnosis so that it can be put to more widespread use in helping man achieve optimum fulfilment, happiness and health. "Power of Hypnosis" is an extensive review of the literature is presented that shows the success rate of hypnotherapy to be 93 per cent after an average of 6 sessions compared to 72 per cent after an average of 22 sessions for behaviour therapy and 38 per cent after an average of 600 sessions for psychoanalysis. Theory of Hypnosis: A very comprehensive theory of hypnosis is presented based on solid principles of conditioning and inhibition, one that encompasses and supersedes all current theories, pointing out similarities and differences. It covers all three aspects of hypnosis: induction process, hypnotic and post-hypnotic phenomena. It has wide scope: the theory not only presents a rational explanation for hypnosis aimed at removing the mystery, misunderstanding and disbelief for hypnosis but also a number of important related concepts including free will, the placebo, faith and even God.It is pointed out that all these concepts are tied in with the concept of belief, with hypnosis defined as a state of heightened belief and belief defined as concentration on a thought to the exclusion of anything contradicting that thought. The main value of hypnosis is shown to be its ability to facilitate change or re-programming. ... Read more

Product Description
The book is devoted to perturbation theory for the Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential, describing motion of a particle in bulk matter. The Bloch eigenvalues of the operator are densely situated in a high energy region, so regular perturbation theory is ineffective. The mathematical difficulties have a physical nature - a complicated picture of diffraction inside the crystal. The author develops a new mathematical approach to this problem. It provides mathematical physicists with important results for this operator and a new technique that can be effective for other problems. The semiperiodic Schrödinger operator, describing a crystal with a surface, is studied. Solid-body theory specialists can find asymptotic formulae, which are necessary for calculating many physical values. ... Read more
