    Extractions: Photo © 1999 Ray Wheeler In the very heart of the Colorado Plateau lies Canyonlands National Park, a fantastic tableau of bizarre rock formations and colorful slickrock mesas. The park encompasses a rugged landscape dominated by barren rock, with sparse desert plant communities growing on less hostile sites. Due to the great variation in elevation within the park, species diversity is high; however, with little soil and low annual precipitation rates of 4-10 inches/year, population densities of many species of both plants and animals are relatively low. Saltbush, Indian rice grass and blackbrush are some of the 536 plant species that are adapted to the arid environment of Canyonlands. Among the many animals that make Canyonlands their permanent or seasonal home are mule deer, coyote, bighorn sheep and 25 species of rodents, including woodrats and deer mice. Seventy percent of the living cover in the park is delicate cryptobiotic soil , growing in peaks and valleys over the sand.

Climatology and Hydrology Field research is strongly encouraged in climatology and hydrology, and laboratory facilities are available for graduate student research. Instrumentation is available for measurement of radiation, energy and water balance components as well as turbulent transfer. Instrumentation includes an assortment of radiation and energy balance instruments including radiometers, temperature, humidity and windspeed profile equipment, eddy correlation instrumentation, samplers for surface and subsurface water, a neutron probe, snow survey equipment and a range of data acquisition systems. Geomorphology Laboratory facilities are available for general analytical work and for sediment analysis in particular. Field equipment includes: survey boats with depth sounders and positioning systems, Mobile B-53 drill rig (mud-rotary, augering and coring capability) mounted on diesel International truck, several vibra-coring systems, a Mt. Sopris 1000 C logging system (gamma, SP and R), a high-resolution seismic system (Bison seismograph, dedicated computers and printers, geophones), pulse EKKO ground penetrating radar system, airborne multi-spectral imaging system and signal processing laboratory. This combination of equipment is unique in the context of Canadian geomorphology, and provides capability for a broad range of studies of fluvial processes and for investigating the subsurface in modern depositional environments.

    Extractions: UCAYALI RIVER, PERU Plate F-25 Map This specially processed Landsat scene shows the Ucayali River in central Peru, immediately east of the high Andes at Cerro de Pasco. The Ucayali originates at the confluence of the Tambo and Urubamba Rivers. The latter both have low to moderately sinuous channels. The Urubamba contains several vegetated islands and some nonvegetated channel deposits, but point bars are not apparent. The river drains the folded and faulted Andean Foreland in the vicinity of the famous Inca sites of Machu Picchu and Cusco. Downstream of the confluence, the Ucayali displays a progressive change in channel pattern. For the first 50 km, it has a complex of anastomosing channels, meanders, abundant nonvegetated islands, and elongate vegetated islands. Downstream of that point, islands become far less abundant, and meandering dominates. Bright spots on the image along the river show that nonvegetated channel deposits are less abundant and occur primarily as point bars. Since no major tributaries enter this reach, the change in channel pattern for the Ucayali probably results from downstream decreases in channel slope and sediment size. The river may experience the threshold change from braiding to meandering that was postulated by S. A. Schumm (1977) on the basis of flume experiments. Figure F-25.1

Geomorphology is a historical science interested in the origin and evolution of landforms. To be most useful geomorphology should be both interested in currently active processes as well as processes that have occurred in the past. Geomorphologists are also presently exploring landforms on other planets. Geomorphology is an interdisciplinary subject that may be approached for different reasons and for different applications. In the past and today geomorphology courses have been taught in both physical geography and geology departments. In the past, many courses have focused on the description and classification of landforms. While it is very important to be able to recognize and classify landforms it is also important to know what processes shape or have shaped these landforms. We will generally follow Dale Ritter's approach by focusing on currently active processes. We will diverge from Ritter's approach by also examining the interesting aspects of tectonic and historical geomorphology that are important to understand the total geomorphic history of an region.
