Extractions: For Release: December 18, 2000 Release: NASA Space Technology Shines Light on Healing Doctors at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee have discovered the healing power of light with the help of technology developed for NASA's Space Shuttle. Using powerful light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, originally designed for commercial plant growth research in space, scientists have found a way to help patients here on Earth. Dr. Whelan's NASA-funded research has already seen remarkable results using the light-emitting diodes to promote healing of painful mouth ulcers caused by cancer therapies such as radiation and chemotherapy. The treatment is quick and painless. "The LEDs needed to grow plants in space produced the same wavelengths of light the doctor needed to remove brain tumors," said Ignatius. "Plus, when we developed the LEDs for NASA, they had to be lightweight to fly aboard the shuttle and have small cooling systems. These traits make the LED surgery probes easier to use in the operating room and thousands of dollars cheaper than laser systems."

Not to be confused with the old tube fluorescent lights, todays new compact fluorescent bulbs give a warmer, more natural light (no longer that greenish hue) and they dont hum or flicker. In fact, virtually all the negatives associated with fluorescent lights have been corrected in these new bulbs. They fit into ordinary lamp and fixture sockets, last about 13 times longer than incandescent bulbs and use only about 25 per cent as much electricity. Over all the result is a less negative impact on the environment.

Long-Lasting Lights Sandia senior scientist James Gee told NewsFactor this revolution in lighting resembles the revolution in electronics in which glass bulbs and vacuum tubes gave way to semiconductors What is particularly attractive about solid-state LEDs, he said, is that they are 10 times more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs, and about twice as efficient as fluorescent lamps. A low-power, solid-state LED light could last up to 100,000 hours, he said, far outdistancing the life of a typical bulb.

(updated slightly 10/9/2002) The most efficient colored LEDs have overal luminous efficacy of approx. 53 lumens/watt and others may soon hit 60. The most efficient white LEDs get around 25 lumens/watt and may soon get 30 lumens/watt. For comparison: USA usual 100W "A19" incandescent - 17.1 lumens/watt. 32 watt T8 fluorescent in "average condition" - typically around 80 lumens/watt including ballast losses.
