Informative
Hard Road West would be the perfect companion for someone following the emigrant trail or an excellent resource for a teacher discussing the western migration. It is very readable and informative. There is also lots of information on the gold in California, its source, its mining and environmental consequences. It is also a good source of information on the geology of America west of the Mississippi River.

Great History of the American West
Hard Road West is beautifully written and a "must" read for fans of American Western history.In my opinion, the most informative and comphrensive telling of the saga of the Oregon/California trail and the overland journey during the Gold Rush.The trail and geology maps alone are worth the cost of the book.This is a book I will keep in my library and will enjoy for many years.

The Way West
As we make our way west Mr. Meldahl enlightens us not only to the features we pass but how we ourselves came to inhabit our planet.As we absorb the latest gripping geology we imagine with regret how much this knowledge would have pleased the pioneers.I know and love many of these places and now my excitement is magnified by this narrative.The inclusion of the photo of his dog Scout is one of the author's brilliant human touches.The merging of interjected historical records, romantic and unromantic impressions of travelers then and now with broad but incisive academic detailing into an even flow of narrative is astonishing.Superb drawings, maps and photos supplement and enlighten the text.I cherish this book.John Weiler

Geology and the shaping of travel
If you like geology, you will love this. Not a quick read and all the better for it. This discussion of how the West was formed makes the travails of the travelers West in the mid-nineteenth century seem superhuman.Every other chapter enlivens the material with excerpts from emigrant diaries.These are memorable! Awful book/ textbook
Do you want to know how good/usefull this book/textbook is? Let me to put it this way. 3 books in one book.In many cases you are on your own. The author tried to put the history of geology in a tiny book. This is going to be a very usefull book/textbook "IF AND ONLY IF" you have a PhD in geology with more than 50 years of teaching experience OR you are a geology expert with more than a 100-years of experience.

international edition
I couldn't justify spending $170 on a paperback this small. I bought the international edition for $45 and it seems to be exactly the same except the cover art is different. I have been using it all semester without a problem.

H. Geol. Book
Arrived just before school started. Just ordered it during a Bad time of the year (Christmas) so I had to wait for it a little longer. But when it arrived it was is good condition with a little water damage but its on the corner so it effects none of the print at all.

Its a great read! - Well written
This book "Historical Geology" is well put together.I for one will follow this authors work in later semesters if given the option.
I found this to be not only well organized, but also entertaining in a sense that helps me comprehend and retain what I have read.

I Agree with Mr. Seifert
Limited to areas along U.S. 50; could have expanded the book to cover U.S. 6, 93, and 95. Rather simplistic in writing style and tone. Would have liked more detailed geology of the areas the authors did cover.

very useful and clearly written
As an amateur geologist (minor in geology in college) I found this book to be very illuminating, clearly written and very useful as a field guide during my travels through Nevada. MacPhee is a poet of great power, who forunately turned his attention to geology and is a joy to read, but his books would never be as useful as this one for actual journeys when you might be trying to identify details in the landscape.

Don't waste your money.
I bought this but was disappointed. The writing was plain bad, like high school writing. Hard to get through it to the geology, which is boring and uninspired (like high school science?). Was this self published? An exciting topic like this deserves much better. See McPhee.

The AGI Glossary is a key reference for any professional geologist.In many cases it is faster to find a reference in the glossary rather than search the internet, and often the explanation in the AGI glossary is more complete.

I've used various editions of this book throughout my 35-year career as an engineering geologist.This is THE definitive geological dictionary in the English language (and I suspect any other language).Nothing else comes remotely close.

This book doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it says on the cover -a glossary.No fancy colors, pictures, tables.Just the facts, clearly explained, in an attractive, easy to read font.

Any office that employs professionals who rely heavily on geology needs this book in its reference library.And just in case you think that the Internet has made books like this obsolete, think again.Nothing online matches the comprehensiveness of this major work.

A convoluted dictionary that needs pictures
A good dictionary doesn't use the term being defined in the definition. This is not a good dictionary.Geology is a visual science. To be a good field reference, pictures would be so very helpful, but there are none. Instead, stratification will be defined as "having strata." This may be a decent memory jogger for someone with a degree in geology, but for the amateur rock-hound, it's a waste of money.

Dictionary of Geology
It is the most helpful book I've ever had for this subject- very clear, and concise but highly informative.

My Observations
If you are a first time user, remember before you push and add button, [THINK] about who you are actually buying from.If it`a Amazon and you make a mistake or change your mind they will let you delete the order automatically.If your order is from another company then you`ll have to write an e-mail to that company to cancel or change your decision. However, Amazon gives you all the info to do this, so don`t get upset like I did. They`ll take care of you!

An excellent all round glossary of geological terms.
This new edition seems to be both a step forwards and a step backwards, at the same time.The list of terms that are explained is exhaustive.In that sense it is an improvement on the earlier edition.Many geographicterms that are relevant to geology have been included for the first time.However, all the diagrams have been omitted (due to space / priceconstraints?), and if a picture can paint a thousand words...... Very Good, but.......
I have both editions and this edition is a remarkable improvement. However, the author who has vast experience in marine geology, decided to take up precious space in an early chapter on this topic since, according to him, we live on a planet covered by water. I think instead 15-20 pages introducing geologic maps and elementary structure(especially after his introductory chapter on the history of US geological surveying) would serve the reader far better--who probably will have little opportunity to particpate in 'field' marine geology.
Maley lists standard field geology books in the reference section (Compton, etc), but field geology for the beginner/student involves understanding field maps, not just photos, as good as these pics are. A few pages covering geologic maps makes sense for a field geology book with over 700 pages.

Superb field manual
This is just a great field manual. It's packed with useful information and the illustrations are plentiful and really add to the reader's understanding since they are usually fully explained in great detail. Using photos and geological examples mostly from the Pacific Northwest, the photos dramatically illustrate many of the most important concepts. The text is also very well written, and the whole manual is detailed and thorough. Overall an extremely well done, practical, and detailed treatment of the subject. And not the least of its virtues is that it's printed on high quality, glossy paper. And finally, at only 35 bucks the price is quite reasonable for what you're getting.

Buy this book!
How I wish I had found this book earlier!The best geology book I've ever bought.It gives illustrations of just about everything along with some descriptions of what you are looking at. It's almost like an illustrated geology dictionary/glossary, and gives many pictures both as drawings and photos to help the reader understand what they are seeing.It is a great asset for all geology classes.If you are someone studying geology this is a must have book!!

Great field guide for the novice...
I wanted a book that would show me actual field situations of common geologic phenomenon.Being a novice, I needed something that I could easily carry and that would not undermine detail.Maley's excellent book fills the bill very well.The numerous illustrations and photographs in this book are extremely useful if you want to "see" and understand geology.Many of the pictures have inset scale standards, such as quarters and measuring rulers, that give one a good comparasion of the rocks and sediments involved.I also appreciate the black and white pictures.Often geology texts go in for snazzy color pictures that often blurr important detail.If you want a good field guide that you can actually use this book is for you.

Roadside Geology of New York
A very interesting and fact-filled guide to the geology of New York. The writer provides a wealth of information about the highly varied topography of New York state, as well as geohistory and biology. Lots of highly descriptive explanations of the different features encountered on the state roadways, with local features of interest, for good measure.

Great companion piece if you travel on NY roads
Have you ever driven through New York State and have wondered where all those varying rock formations came from? Believe it or not, but New York was a rockin' place for last 500,000,000 years - earthquakes, towering mountains, sandy beaches, and deep oceans...and all of this happened north of New York City!

This book is a great introduction to the world of geology in New York, and it covers the roads many of us travel daily.It does help to have some prior knowledge of eras, periods, and epochs...however these are all outlined before you get to the preface of the book, so study these before diving in to read about your part of the state.

This, and other books like it, make for great learning if you are just traveling through with children under 18.You may end up taking roads other than the Thruway!

A "must read" to know New York geology....
Brad Van Diver's 1985 work, Roadside Geology of New York, explores the state's geology in a series of self guided road trips from one end of the state to the other. Even if you don't plan on taking the tours, the well written book is loaded with well described maps, diagrams, and photos. great for class
the book arrived in time.. in great condition.. a little bit of highlighting as it had noted before purchase.

ok, but not great
The book is fairly well written, though is a a little advanced.Through the chapters, many topics "cycle"; you will see them again and again.If you are unaware that is the intention, the book seems to be everywhere without actually saying anything.It would be good if there were some sort of examples or exercises at the end so it could be used with a lab.Easy to read.

This book is all over the place
It was far to difficult, I think each chapter is written by someone else and it shows because it does not flow well. It goes off on tangents.. overall this book is horrible I hated it

I purchased these book hoping it would be complete and accurate. I have noticed a trend amoung Geology Professors to produce books and lab manuals that are full of errors. I have often wondered if the Professor's know their stuff. This book is adequate in its coverage of the information typical of a introductory Structual Geology course. It, as most geology text books, is lacking in worked problems on mechanics and everything else. I would like to see this author expand his book in the tradition of K. A. Stroud's ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS and show complete solutions to all/many types of problems that an student may encounter as a Structural Geologsit/Geologist. Maybe they could add a supplement and title it STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY FOR STUDENTS. When I was in school, the only Lab Manual was the one by Ragan, 1973, and his explanations of problems, combined with his writting style, left me confussed and frustrated. I was too dumb to know he had many equation written backwards, which explains why I always could not seem to get the same answer I derived using graphical methods when I attempted to test my answers with the trig methods presented in his work. In this Strucural Geology text, I experienced some of that same old frustration from school on page 51, "Adventures with the Mohr circle." The explanation of how to calculate and draw the circle was too brief. Also, this would have been a good opportunity for the authors to take the student by the hand, in the K.A. Stroud tradition, and walk them through this problem. Also, it is my opinion that these two authors spend too much time discussing regional perspectives in Part E of their book. Most courses fail to get that far in one semester. It is subject matter best left to a course on tectonics, at a more advanced level in a geologist training. Many Geology Departments forget that they are training scientist and have the tendency to become secretive of their materials and sources, all for the sake of arrogance and that perfect Bell Grading Curve. This damages their ability to train students to be the best geoscientist possible in a changing world. ... Read more

An excellent field guide
As one who has traveled, and will continue to travel and explore, the Colorado Plateau extensively, I find all of Mr. Baars' works both useful and entertaining. This one is no different.Mr. Baars has an excellent grasp of the geological complexities of this wonderful area and shares his enthusiasm and keen insights well.I would like to see more photography, especially color, because I believe it is important to visualize an area before seeing it in real life, if for no other reason than to enhance photographic opportunities.Even in this minor absence, the book is a great read,and heartily recommended for any student of the Plateau.

Excellent introduction to the geology of SE Utah
This book is definately worth the money.I bought it while at Arches N.P. because I was amazed by the rock formations of the area.It was so varying that I wanted to learn more.This book definately helped me to understandin laymans terms.This book is definately for the novice.It will makeyou want to study the subject even more. ... Sorry, but not up to par from this publisher.
Seriously lacking detailed maps, geologicals and/or cross-sectionals, topographic or satellite, anything useful in color.If I hadn't already known the area, I wouldn't be very interested in re-visiting.For a lover of southwestern US geology, that's sad.

I know it's not a "Roadside Geology of..." but Southern Utah deserves more than this very light work.

This is the first time I've regretted a purchase from Mountain Press Publishing.Ever.The "Roadside Geology" series suffers only from a few states' having dated entries, but they're useful nonetheless.I'd be more cautious with the "Geology Underfoot..." set. ... Read more

Excellent geology intro
As someone living in Indiana, I appreciate this book as an excellent introduction to Indiana geology. While much of the treatment is superficial, it covers a lot of ground and there isn't time to go into everything at much depth. It also provides substantial insight into historical use of surface and subsurface geological resources in the Hoosier state, and as such gives a taste of lifestyles over the last 150 years. Highly recommended.

Indiana actually has some geology
This is definitely one of the better books in this series (I own most of them).If you, like me, have always regarded Indiana as a place you have to drive through, you'll be as surprised as I to discover just how muchinteresting geology there is.It's a good read besides.

Another great Roadside Geology work, this time better than most.Who would have thought that Indiana geology could come alive like this?The book is so well illustrated with maps, photographs and drawings that it isfun just to flip through.
