how to turn middle school students off to science
Just wanted to agree wholeheartedly with the other one star review for this book.Book is comprehensive in scope but is REALLY difficult to read and comprehend!Not written at all at the level it is designed to educate.

Reading Level Questionable
After carefully reviewingthis book and actually using it,I can not believe that the reading level for it is 7th grade.Although visually appealing, the text itself is difficult for many college educated adults to understand. Pronunciations forscientific terms are not indicated in the contextof the text and definitions are vague,they are not explained (?) in terms that theaverage middleschool studentis able to understand. The abstract concept of “information” can be quantified and this has led to many important advances in the analysis of data in the empirical sciences. This text focuses on a science philosophy based on “multiple working hypotheses” and statistical models to represent them. The fundamental science question relates to the empirical evidence for hypotheses in this set—a formal strength of evidence. Kullback-Leibler information is the information lost when a model is used to approximate full reality. Hirotugu Akaike found a link between K-L information (a cornerstone of information theory) and the maximized log-likelihood (a cornerstone of mathematical statistics). This combination has become the basis for a new paradigm in model based inference. The text advocates formal inference from all the hypotheses/models in the a priori set—multimodel inference.

This compelling approach allows a simple ranking of the science hypothesis and their models. Simple methods are introduced for computing the likelihood of model i, given the data; the probability of model i, given the data; and evidence ratios. These quantities represent a formal strength of evidence and are easy to compute and understand, given the estimated model parameters and associated quantities (e.g., residual sum of squares, maximized log-likelihood, and covariance matrices). Additional forms of multimodel inference include model averaging, unconditional variances, and ways to rank the relative importance of predictor variables.

This textbook is written for people new to the information-theoretic approaches to statistical inference, whether graduate students, post-docs, or professionals in various universities, agencies or institutes. Readers are expected to have a background in general statistical principles, regression analysis, and some exposure to likelihood methods. This is not an elementary text as it assumes reasonable competence in modeling and parameter estimation.

very readable
I use this book as a supplementary text for a graduate course. It's clearly written, and explains all of the multiple model AIC-based approach in simple terms that students that aren't especially quantitatively oriented can understand and apply the techniques.

Great book
I am a graduate student in the life sciences and am new to information theory and multiple hypotheses and this book was really clear, "easy" to read and just plain made a lot of sense. The author is not afraid to share his opinion but what is nice is that you are clear on what is opinion and what is history or theory. I highly suggest this book for any first year graduate student since most departments are still not teaching this in the classroom. ... Read more

I never received the book, even though I specifically requested expedited shipping (unless expedited means longer than usual).I gave it a couple of weeks and still no book.I finally ordered it through a more reliable source.However, I am still waiting for my refund LESS A RESTOCKING FEE for a book that was never unstocked, fancy that.Lets see how long it takes for that.If I could rate this experience from 1-10, it would easily be somewhere in the (-) negative range. If your considering purchasing from this seller I advise to look somewhere else, unless you want your book a couple of months from when you order it.

One of my favorite books!
This book is very well structured, has wonderful illustrations, pictures,and diagrams.I agree that it is an excellent introductory biology text asit touches base with all facets of the subject.

"Biology: The Science of Life" is an extremely valuable guide to a thorough and complete understanding of basic biological concepts. In AP Bio, it not only helped me through the class, but caused me to permanently fall in love with biology. I'd love to meet the authors to thank them in person for this wonderful book. I'll buy it, because it will always offer me a connection to my first, playful, yet professional encounter with biology.

As a fellow bio student to others I have but only one thing to say, Give me a break!! Do you know how long the book is ?!?!? And do you know how thick this book is?? If you are in AP bio, youhave to know every single page by heart ! Ok, honestly, thisbook is good and probably the best AP bio book there is,just be sure to read this book over the summer to get theinformation. One test is 60 pages of text in this book. The book is also very comprehensive.

Bio book that you can't get at your local college book store
Thisbook is awesome because it is hardcover. The one my school provided was looseleaf and they told me that hardcover wasn't available.. even though this book was slightly more expensive than the looseleaf but at least, I dont have to worry about the loose leaf paper tearing and I am going to use this book for 3 quarters.

Uncertain at first
For those who are like me and do not want the paperback version of this book, but still need bio portal, this is the best deal I could find online. This is the 9th edition of Life: the science of Biology although it seems to be to good to be true. I am Morehouse College biology major and this book will be like my bible for the next 3 years. This is a great little resource from which to design and teach your own Life Science course for homeschool -- but it doesn't do it all for you; you're going to learn, too! Which is great. I reviewed 7th grade Life Science for myself, learned more than I did the first time anyway, and have been able to teach my son with greater confidence. I needed this textbook for a Stats class, however the book was in great shape and its content is pretty thorough (applies fairly basic statistics to a wide spectrum of research applications). Some sections, however, are easier to comprehend than others for those of us with a "journalism" mind.

Useless
Way overpriced for a cheap thinly paperback 68 page solutions manual that only further explains what the already given answers in the back of the book. For the high price i expected getting all the solutions and explanations. lazy authors. WASTE OF MY MONEY!! Returning right away.

Okay, not the best solutions manual.
This solutions manual is horrible. I thought it would all of the answers to the book to help me review for the test but it only shows how to do the ones the textbook gives. Only buy if it you want less than 1/2 the solutions to the textbook.

I couldn't find a review saying whether or not this book had all the answers for all the problems, so I took a chance and got it.Of course, it ended up only having the worked-out solutions to the answered problems in the back of the actual book.Really disappointing, seeing as how most of the problems my teacher assigns are not given solutions in the back, so it's not too much help.Frustrating and not worth it. ... Great for any level
This is a great book. Full of insider info and insights from someone who has been in the industry, and has a sence of reality.
Plus there is quite a lot of humor!

An interesting read, and a good introduction to the world of smells, scents and odors.

Strong literary flavor, masking complex scientific overtones
I enjoyed this well-written book, and learned a lot from it. It is often brilliantly funny. Avery Gilbert covers the history of the subject in great detail. Some of the minutiae about the history of smell in the movies had me skipping pages but might be very useful for someone in marketing or advertising. The clinical account of anosmia is better than in most neurology texts.He is a very perceptive literary critic, with the ability to convey the impression of having read through whole books by Faulkner and of reading Proust in French.
Some aspects of the hard science are skimped. He does not exactly explain what Buck and Axel got the Nobel Prize for. There is almost nothing about neuroanatomy and there are no tables or illustrations, although there are ample references. Someone with a serious interest in the field might want also to read Chapter 34 by Dodd and Carellucci, in Kandel's ""Principles of Neuroscience."
The fundamental difference between the way the brain deals with smell and other sensations is only touched on in a quotation (a very apposite quotation) from Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1858.Pheromones are not in the index.
The central puzzle is why we human beings have lost so much of our sense of smell.Gilbert's main answer is to insist that we haven't lost as much as we think. That is one aspect of the problem. It's especially important as a problem because of the strange way humans, especially males, select preferred sex objects. Humans have all the brain structures in place to be sexually motivated by smell, as are the other apes, but this ability got hi-jacked by vision somewhere along the evolutionary way.

The book I received was not the one I ordered.It was the wrong edition and had to be returned.The seller was good enough to refund my money but I did not have the book for the start of class and had to purchase it at the school book store for a much higher price because of the incompetence of a clerical person who entered the bar code incorrectly and sent me the wrong edition- NOT the one that was listed with the lovely light bulb and purple cover. Beware- even if the ISBN matches and the picture and edition number are the same as the book you want in the photo provided online that may not be the book you get.

Good purchase!
This was a required textbook for my calculus class and this was the cheapest price I found for it, which I was happy about. It came very quickly, it got here in about 3 days. It was very well packaged, so there was no damage from shipping, however, the book was a little bit more used than I had hoped, but it wasn't like it was unusable. I was happy with the purchase considering the price.

Poor
As a student, lessons are not explained. Having a poor teacher doesn't help, but every time I turn to the book an explanation is lacking. After reading the unit, the problems generally seem completely detached. I will work through the examples and come to an understanding of the material, and not be capable of completing a single exercise. Very difficult book to understand if you are not already fluent in mathematics. Coming from an otherwise A student.

Simply Wonderful!
The book is simply amazing, it teaches calculus with numerous examples and strives to really teach calculus on a practical level. Like any typical math book, you will be able to reach perfection through the numerously listed math problems. However, the book's only slight shortcoming is in the explanation of some problems and lessons, for which you might need to seek the help of a teacher or a smart student. Overall, the book is wonderful!

interesting applications
If you are majoring in the life sciences, then the authors have striven to teach calculus in a manner that will interest and motivate you. Here, life sciences encompasses both the biological sciences and various social sciences like finance and economics.

The authors customise the course via numerous examples and problems in each chapter. To be sure, in the text, outside the examples, it is a straightforward explanation of the important ideas in caculus, like finding derivates and solving differential equations. Which is as it should be. The maths is independent of the applications, after all. But much of the value of the book to you is in those examples and problems.

There is a fascinating plethora of problems. I will only cite a few: Modelling a foot and mouth disease epidemic. Alcohol concentration in a person's blood as a function of time. Rate of pollution entering a lake. The Gini coefficient of income inequality in a country.
