Simple Stats Book I've used till date
I don't have a great extensive experience in reviewing Statistics books, except to say, I usually found all of them confusing (more like me being so). But this book comes across as very well explained and simple to understand.

Practical Business Statistics
Overall, a very basic and easy to follow introduction to statistics. I'm a wildlife sciences major and while the focus of the book is VERY different, the concepts still apply. A very easy introduction into statistics and the excel-based exercises are helpful.

Lower cost, little difference
So two things for buyers: The 6th edition is out and your professor likely is trying to get you to buy that one.Second even if the condition is marked as new by a seller on v5, most books are missing the CD-Rom when it reaches here. I haven't found a need for this disk, but the mislabeling by vendors is ANNOYING! The book isn't too bad and has little difference to the 6th edition (the 6th divides the chapters and concepts more), good class notes and a good list of formulas can help greatly.For the formulas Google for "CBS Semester 1 David Juran Statistics" if you can.I also would tell faculty to forget the added costs of v6 and the insanity of special print additions as this book used is plentiful, cheap and has really nothing horribly wrong. You know, use statistics and economics to figure out what is better for students?

A very confusing book
I really have to warn everybody of this book!This book confuses me.This is the prescribed text for my first year subject.Maybe I am not senior enough to give comment on this book.Everytime I read this book, it confuses me somemore!If you have a choice, don't buy this book.If you are really serious in studying and not just buying an expensive book for display, don't ever buy this book.

Statistics for Business and Economics
This book is fairly comprehensive covering all the major topics that a student would need for the statistics modules in various business courses. Managers need to have an understanding of statistics so that they are able to manipulate the numerous masses of data that come their way into meaningful and useful information that they can employ in making business decisions.

The author presented the material in the book in a simple and clear manner without any complicated algebra, making it readable by students in business schools with a basic knowledge of mathematics. The author also provided large numbers of examples and exercises that should assist the reader in consolidating his/her understanding of the concepts described in the book.

Most managers are consumers rather than producers of statistical information. This book equips the reader with the expertise to enable one to be an informed consumer who knows the right questions to ask and the kind of information to request from those who produce the statistical information in the organization.

Definitely leaf through it before deciding to buy
I'm an MBA student in a top5 business school in the US, and we use this as our textbook for the basic stats course. I've only read the first 5 chapters so far, and I've found this book to be one of the worst textbooks I've seen since college. Some very simple concepts are explained in very confused (and confusing) language, the text is very arid and skips over most of the conceptual subtleties or fallacies that the unsuspecting user of statistical data may easily fall victim to. I strongly suggest leafing through it before deciding whether to buy it (you can start with chapter 2, which is pretty typical of the tone of the book and, being the 1st "substantial" chapter of the book, doesn't assume knowledge of concepts defined in previous chapters).

Rock-solid textbook for non-math majors

Buy this book, review from a biologist
I am a member of the target audience of this book (PhD biologist, took stats a LONG time ago, didn't really learn it then anyway).Unless you are a professional data analyst with years of experience who is annoyed by biologists (mis)understanding of statistical processes, you can benefit from this book.If you are an analytical professional annoyed by biologists misunderstanding of statistics, buy this book for them and end your frustrations.

This book is the BEST statistical resource I have read (and I have read many).Here's why:

1. It does NOT get bogged down in probability theory.(Yes, this is a good thing)

2. It does differentiate types of data (quantitative vs. categorical) and how to compare within and between types.

3. The book includes clear and concise explanations of the assumptions, execution and meaning of each test (f-, t-, z-, chi-squared), regression techniques, etc (see the TOC for full list).

4. It gives 'how to' examples in Excel.I agree that Excel is not the best tool for statistics (the authors admit this too) but EVERYBODY has it and EVERYBODY can use it (unlike R, SAS, SPSS, Minitab, etc).


As the title says, this is a manual (not a textbook).It gives you the what, why, and how to do statistical tests under different circumstances with clearly written and experimentally relevant examples.You will not be a statistician after reading this book, but you will have a better understanding of what you should be thinking about when looking at your data and you may be able to have a better conversation with one... BEFORE you begin your experiments.

One last thing, BIOLOGY UNDERGRADUATES!Read this BEFORE you take Introductory Statistics (at least ch. 3-7) .It's an easy read and you will be happier for it.

Great Book: Benefits Outweigh the Minor Disadvantages
I have a Master's degree in statistics and I am currently pursuing a PhD in chemistry.To prepare for a statistics lecture I am giving my research group, I wanted to see how material was being taught to those in the sciences who were unfamiliar with statistics.My hope with this book was to get a grasp of what educators felt were important statistics for scientists to know and to gain ideas I could use to help teach statistics.

Short Overall Recommendation: Buy this book.You will find the book dense with material, yet easy to read with concise, statistically accurate explanations.The book contains most of the important statistical techniques that researchers need to be familiar with and know.At times, the flow of a chapter was illogical, but as a whole the content of that chapter was always beneficial.
The book lacks textbook-style problem sets at the ends of chapters but you will find the use of Excel functions can suffice, especially if you have your own data to work with (there is also an index of "Worked Examples").But because this is not a textbook, if you are trying to learn statistics without any background knowledge, you may find the dense style without problems and answers difficult to handle.While I expand on the benefits and disadvantages of this book below, I believe that the book is very well written and the benefit gained from reading it and having it as a reference far outweigh any disadvantages.


Lengthy breakdown for those who want more details:
### Benefits of this book:
--Excel functions were taught so that the average laboratory researcher can perform statistical tests right on their computer.On page 9, the authors clearly state, "Excel is not a statistical software package."See my note below in Disadvantages for more.

--The book clearly states this is for biologists, and the examples are directly from biology.Bremer and Doerge did a good job reaching out to their target audience.

--The book is hardcover with the inside pages wire bound.This type of binding allows a researcher to open the book and let it sit hands-free open on a bench.

--In section 2.3, Bremer and Doerge describe the friction that can exist between a researcher and a statistical consultant.They offer brief, but very appropriate advice for how a researcher should prepare for a meeting with a statistician.However, they did not emphasize the benefits of meeting with a statistician prior to running an experiment.

--There is an "Excel Function Index," which I thought would be helpful for a researcher.However, they did miss some indexing.For example, on page 30 the "=NORMINV()" function is introduced, but it is not defined in a gray box as all the other Excel functions and the index does not cite this page for that particular function.

--Chapter 8, "Special Topics" included a very brief (~25 pages) overview of Classification, Clustering, Principal Component Analysis, Microarray Data Analysis, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian statistics.I felt this was a good conclusion to the book, although I would have called this chapter "Advanced Topics" and emphasized in the introduction that Excel cannot be used for these types of analyses.

--Both authors are women.In the world of science/math textbook authorship, I believe women are severely underrepresented.Since this is such an outstanding book, I believe that this subtle detail should not go unnoticed.


### Disadvantages (let me emphasize again that I do not believe these outweigh the benefit of reading this book and having it on your shelf):
--The use of Excel functions serves as a good introduction to statistics, but I fear a reader may misinterpret the message of the authors.While Excel is a good tool to learn statistics, it is not a program that should be relied upon for data analysis, especially for data analysis that will result in published manuscripts.I encourage interested individuals to pursue Minitab.I used this program before my formal statistics training and always found it user-friendly.With Bremer and Doerge's book in hand the Minitab functions should be easy to understand.

-- Although rare, there is an occasional overestimation of the reader's knowledge of statistics; one example is on page 44 where the error term of a regression model is introduced.The authors describe the notation: "epsilon ~ Normal(0,1)" as epsilon having a "normal distribution with parameters 0 and 1."I believe it would have been useful here to say that those parameters are the mean and variance, respectively.

--The format of the book was good, but I felt like they were trying to cram the pages.With a benchtop reference guide, I believe a recipe-style approach would have suited their audience better.For example, each new section would have started on a new page (or maybe every time a new term was introduced).Also, adding in tabs for the different chapters would have been nice.However, contradicting what I just said, one great advantage of their current approach is that a researcher may simply add their own tabs using a sticky note.

--The list of popular statistics software packages on page 8 does not include S-Plus, although it is listed later on page 88.The authors could have expanded their list on page 8 (including packages like S-Plus, Maple, Matlab and Statistica) and just referenced the list later in the text.Perhaps mentioning some well-known packages commonly used by biologists, such as GraphPad Prism or Origin would have been useful.

--On page 108, the authors introduce "Correlation and regression" and discuss r, r^2 and their meanings.While correct, the authors missed an opportunity to expand the discussion to emphasize that r^2 is not a measure of linearity.The term coefficient of determination was not used to describe r^2.Finally, neither r^2, r-squared, nor coefficient of determination could be found in the index.

--On page 130, the authors describe that ANOVA and regression models "both assume that the residuals are independent, normally distributed, and have constant variance."Yet, in Section 7.1.6, "Verification of Assumptions" they do not describe the independence requirement.There is also no description of a diagnostic check for independence.

--ANOVA was discussed, but no experimental design was introduced.I found this to be quite disappointing.So much more could be learned in science if experiments were properly designed in order to extract out correct data.The only way to do this is to consult with a statistician before an experiment is run (but let's be honest, this rarely happens in the sciences).Or the scientist themselves can be equipped with basic statistical experimental design.

--There was no discussion of nonlinear regression.Section 7.1.3, "Logistic Regression" explicitly says that Excel cannot perform logistic regression.However, nonlinear regression can be performed in Excel and is a technique used by biologists. ... Read more

Guidelines valuable to everybody
I found this book unexpectedly useful, complete and easy to read. It contains the kind of statistical knowledge that medical people do like to see. It is not another textbook that reviews medical statistics. However it provides the clues to understand and classify all these statistical jargon and processes that cause difficulties to eveybody that loves to handle statistics himself.I fully recommend it

Fantastic Reference for Preparing for Peer-Reviewed Manuscript Submissions
This is the best reference book I have found on the topic of how to present data for manuscripts to be submitted to peer-reviewed journals.It is easy to use, super easy to understand, and covers all elements of the manuscript preparation process as far as data representation is concerned. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a book on the subject. It includes many examples of data tables, figures, and even examples of how to write up titles and data descriptions.

Understanding biostatistics without becoming a statistican

Good for experts
However, it might confuse the beginners. It skips the basics and introduces basic subjects in completely different way. I think the auther asumed his readers are well understand basics. This will create confusion.

This is a great book!
Statistics for Six Sigma Made Easy by Warren Brussee is a great book!
(Typically I do not write reviews. But this book is so great that it compelled me to write one).
This book is definitely for all those manufacturing / process / quality / production engineers out there who want to understand the basic Six Sigma statistics in an easy "simplified" way. It contains lots of "real life" examples / case studies, thus it is very easy to relate to. Btw, some of these examples / case studies WILL bring smile on your face / make you laugh, (how often does that happens while reading / studying a statistics related book?). It's like, "I know what he is talking about"!
(Of course if you want to buy "heavy" statistics / mathematics laden Six Sigma book then there are lots of other books / authors to choose from, Thomas Pyzdek's books are the perfect examples of that).

Decent but lacks Excel examples
I am a Six Sigma Black Belt and this is a decent statistical reference. It provides a reasonably coherent and understandable explanations of basic statistics. This is not a statistical workbook but it contains enough practice problems to further one's understanding of rudimentary statistics.

The main issue I have with this book is its dearth of Excel examples. For example, the book leaves out key Excel statistical functions such as TTEST, STANDARDIZE, NORMSDIST, and any examples from Excel's Statistics Pack. This is not a good book if you want to understand Excel's statistical functions.

The early chapters are dedicated to rudimentary Six Sigma concepts such as DMAIC. The later chapters deals with improving manufacturing quality but the depth of explanation and statistical questions and solutions are least impressive of all the chapters.

The main benefit of this book is that it only introduces rudimentary statistics commonly used in Six Sigma metholodgies. But I would not use this book as a workbook to improve statistics knowledge or as an Excel handbook on statistics.

6S no, process improvement yes.
On a whole not worth the $14 I paid. Your better bet is to get this book from a library and read it over a weekend. Looking at the manner in which the tools are simplified, I believe the methods dilute the overall value of a tool on a formal 6S project. If you are looking for the 99.999+% solution for a 50k+ problem you can not afford to risk using a lower accuracy tool.

BUT..If you are looking for a process improvement tool that is in the success rate of a Kaizan event, (more on the 80-90% success rate) the simplified version of the tools make sense. In point of fact this book could drive toward a wider use of more valid statistical tools in a production/operations environment.

I did like the step by step walk through probability that gives a validation of the why behind many of the 6S tools. I also liked the manner in which the book presented the exercises with the answers to assure reader understanding and correct use in excel. The other value in this book is that all the tools presented are producible utilizing MS excel which most people in a business environment have vs. a 1K+ purchase of Minitab or SPSS.

Good Primer for ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) Exam
"Statistics for Six Sigma Made Easy" offers one of the better statistical overviews for Six Sigma Black Belt-level work and for exam preparation for the Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) examination given by the American Society for Quality (ASQ).While there are many references that position themselves as good Six Sigma statistical references, Warren Brussee presents an ideal balance of depth and breadth among other references in this book.

I used this book as one of my review sources for the CSSBB exam given by the ASQ.While the author suggests that the material covered in the book is more appropriate for Green Belt, as opposed to Black Belt, work, I found Brussee's book served as a good overview for the CSSBB exam.

The book does not cover all of the major statistical concepts included in the CSSBB Body of Knowledge, but Brussee's "Six Sigma Statistical Tool Finder Matrix", Chapter summaries, and compendium of formulas discussed in the book combine to offer an excellent base for a high-level Six Sigma statistical review.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Six Sigma.It is especially useful as a statistical primer for the Six Sigma methodology.Brussee artfully combines real-world experience with a theoretical foundation in this well-written book. ... Read more

This textbook is designed to be used in conjunction with a college course.My college years are long past, but I want to learn statistics.I saw a recommendation of this book by a retired professor of statistics in a statistics journal so I just picked it up to teach myself.It is excellent.It is a clearly written, thorough introduction to basic statistics.As an added bonus it comes with practice and testing software on the principles discussed in the text.The text also includes examples of how to work the problems using Minitab and the TI-83 calculator (and occasionally Excel).You do not need to use any of those programs for your study.I am using the Casio fx-9750GA Plus calculator (which I love!) and the statistical program R (which I love even more!!) to do my calculations.If you are interested in learning basic statistics, I highly recommend this book. ... Average Stats Book
The Statistics for Management and Economics book from Keller is just an average stats book. It's slightly less dry than most but the material doesn't jump off the page and hold students interest. It's highly academic and it's application to real world situations, for which is written, is minimal. Where this book does a good job is in explaining how to use excel. You need good stats professors to engage student with this book.

Good book for help
I bought this as a back-up book for the statistics class I was taking.Some nice equations for problems.

I wish this was my statistics textbook
Statistics and Calculus are probably the two most useful mathematical concepts known to man. They are used extensively not only in math, engineering, and science, but also in business, finance, and economics as well.

Statistics allows one to derive relationships between data sets and derive future probabilities and, therefore, predictive abilities. If you want to predict the future within reason, then all you need are strong statistics (sometimes calculus) knowledge and plethora of accurate and relevant data.

This book unleashes the power of statistics unto the reader. The explanations are the clearest I have read and the most user friendly. Unfortunately, most of the statistics books are very dry and difficult to read. This book tries to counter that trend. Although statistics is still a dry topic, the format of this book, with its many captions, tries to make it interesting. It views statistics from the reader's perspective and tries to fill in the knowledge gap a reader might have about statistics as each chapter progresses. It is very well written and I wish this was my statistics text back during my school days.

There are plenty of practice problems but many of the practice problems are essentially the same problems with different wording. Much of the steps in solving the problems in each chapter involves using the same processes and formulas. The questions are also on the easy side. If you are looking for challenging statistics problems, then this book may not fill your need.

This book does not involve using calculus and only arithmetic and algebra knowledge are required. But by doing so, it doesn't dig into advanced statistics which is probably beyond the scope of this book anyhow.

Instructions on using statistics software such as SAS, MiniTab, or Excel are NOT included. This is pure statistics textbook that teaches how to solve problems using a good old fashioned calculator and statistics tables.

Excellent tutorial Statistics book
To begin I used this book and the Complete Idiot's guide to Statistics book to prime
myself for the dsst exam. I'm close to 60 years old.

I found the book excellent in it's coverage of the various examples and problems
that a student would encounter in exercises or tests. The exercises begin simple
enough, but they become more complex as expected. The explanation and directions are
given in side notes these add to understanding the problems solution. The continuing
sections of each chapter are further seperated for clarity. There are nearly 900
problems included in this book.

An example in beginning Hypothesis Testing for a Single Population, the reader is
introduced to a Mean= or > than 30 and Sigma unknown. The next section begins to
a Mean < 30 and Sigma known. This sequence continues for each chapter section so tokeep a student from getting too confused. The book covers or touches most material
included in a first years Statistics course.Including Statistical Process Control.

The bad points...there are a few typos and miscalculations, but they are not
insurmountable. If I can find them and correct so can a younger student.
By the way I scored a 460 on the dsst Statistics exam.

Too Many Typos
For such a confusing subject, it's disappointing to see an otherwise approachable text have so many errors.page 132 says "multiply the probabilities of each event occurring to ge the probability of both events occurring together". While true, this section is talking about combinations and it's really demonstrating the Fundamental Counting Principle!

Page 131, notes that "you can't multiply the two factorial x!y! and get(xy)!" Also true, but it goes on to say "the product 8!3! does not equal 11!"That demonstrates that you can't *add* the factorials, rather than multiply them (in either case, you can't multiply or add factorials). Did the authors mean to say "you cannot add the two factorials 8!3! and get 11!"?

Page 129, the sample problem 5.12 is given with a combination lock with 40number will unlock given a three number sequence, a permutation of 40P3. But the book says to calculate 3P40, and then immediately calculates 40P30 in a long equation. Which is correct? For the uninitiated this is extremely confusing.

If they really wish this book to be approachable, they needed to edit it much better than this. I commend their effort to make the book readable, but I've returned it because I became to skeptical that for later topics that I could not see through that I would be led astray but such sloppy editing. At least for the ones I did find I could see past errors. ... Read more

Essential for students learning statistical programs and prodecures simultaneously
As a person learning both how to use statistical programs (e.g.: SPSS) and how and when to apply different statistical procedures, this book has been a lifesaver for me.Clearly written, with very helpful step-by-step instructions for running procedures using SPSS's drop down menu, the syntax this creates, and interpretations of output.The authors provide enough theoretical statistical background but not so much that you can't see the forest for the trees.If only all of my time trying to learn statistical procedures had been as well-spent as my time using this guide!

This was required text so I really didn't have a choice choosing what book to use. The book is not written in a student friendly manner while the directions on how to use minitab, excel and graphing calculators are helpful the bulk of the content is not written in layman's terms and the examples are poor as well. More valuable 5-10 years ago
New statistics books containing R code seem to be coming out weekly. At one time I used this book a lot to get ideas on R/S programs that I needed to write. I now , seldom reference it, but go to other texts that contain R code on the topic I'm investigating.I have never liked the MASS documentation and the explanations in their book aren't much better. Many, of course will disagree with this.

It is still an important book and the only place to find good code on certain topics, i.e., nnet, poor explanations aside.
If you need sample code, though, go somewhere else first.

Still, if you only have 3 or 4 statistics books with R/S code, this should be one of them for it's breadth alone.

Essential Reference
Who is the books audience?Its a second book.A second book to a theory book.A second book to a textbook.A second book to a your lecture notes.It will never be ~the~ book for a topic by itself, but it just a brilliant job of filling gaps.

I picture it like this: if your going into a graduate program that uses R buy this book and you will use it.2 out of 3 courses I took in spring semester used R heavily.I am surprised none of the instructors had the line "Recommended for students continuing in R is MASS..." in their syllabus. Because that is exactly what I would say.This is one of those books you want to get early, and keep it around.

It never explains enough of the statistics to stand on its own; however, its coverage of R and R packages is more complete than anything I have found elsewhere. And having got it a year after I first started using R, I am sad I didn't get it sooner =)~

If you're changing topics alot like a student does is it ~the~ desk reference for R?Probably.Maybe I will run into a better one in a few months though?I dunno.. you get it and tell me.

one of the best applied books on statistics that uses S
This text is very popular and frequently cited in the statistics literature.The authors do an outstanding job of displaying modern statistical methods through the S programming language.It is an intermediate level book and certainly worthy of 5 stars.

Excellent, but be aware of what you are buying
This is *the* book to have on S+/R. It provides excellent value for its price (indeed, any price): it is concise, broad, informative. All the same, I think it would be useful to identify intended audience for this book (in my view). First, the book is not for novices in Statistics. You'll learn how to fit generalized linear models in the language, not how and why to apply such models properly. To this end, there are plenty of specific monographies, and the majority of them use R for examples. Just to name a few, Friedman, Hastie, Tibshirani, Harrell, Faraway employ R. Also, this book assume some basic knowledge of programming. R is a more elegant language than Matlab and Thinking in R becomes very natural after some practice. But I have not seen so far a tutorial on "R as a first language". Summing up, this is a great book for undergraduates in Statistics/Engineering and up, who want a comprehensive, usable reference. My only criticism is that since 2002 there have been giant changes in the language. First, R is now the main implementation of the language, with S+ being an industry-supported variant. Second, the S4 object model is here to stay and grow, and is crying for a user-friendly introduction. Lastly, the number of packages is probably twenty times what it was in 2002. SVMs, ensemble methods, shrinkage, sparse representations *are* modern applied statistics, and are underrepresented in the book.

Still, this is a must have for any applied statistician.

A Course in Applied Statistics
I started using R to do linear modeling and found that I was using 'library(MASS)' much of the time.MASS, it turns out, stands for Modern Applied Statistics with S. R is a free ware version of S-Plus. I assumed that R is simply S-Plus without the GUI. I was close, but not right.There are some minor differences.This book, written for S also addresses the use of R in the applications presented, and also notes differences between the two, when they exist.I am quite pleased with Venerables and Ripley's book; it presents much of the theoretical background as well as 'command line' code for doing the analyses presented in each chapter. The book assumes the reader has some background in statistics.

The first five chapters are a brief overview of /introduction to S-Plus (or R).These chapters present enough information and examples to make the rest of the book fairly easy to work through.

I got the book primarily to work design of experiments.The chapters on linear statistical models and general linear models were perfectly suited to my needs. Topics like factorial experiments, random and mixed effects, nested designs, partially balanced designs are covered.In addition, techniques of robust analysis and bootstrap methods are presented.

The book covers many other areas - non-linear models, classification, time series, optimization.. I have not worked through any of these topics in the book.

Overall I find Modern Applied Statistics with S to be an excellent book, invaluable if one is using R (I don't have S-Plus) as the vehicle for analyses. ... Read more

Great stats text
My stats professor used the 2nd edition of this text for my MBA statistics class. It's a very readable book that explains the topics clearly and simply. You can almost teach yourself the material from the book without need of a professor. I recently re-read portions of the book for another class and found it easy to pick up the topics again. I wish that all of my texts were this well written. If you need a great book on statistics, then this is the one.

Useless Book
I can't recommend this book at all.It is not user friendly and makes certain assumptions about a subject that many students have no background in.I did not find it helpful; rather, I found it stilted and obtuse.

Intuiton! Intuiton! Intuiton!
The author is amazing. The whole book focuses on intuition behind every formula. Usually, the formula/math and its explanation in a statistic book are more than 50% of the content. But in this book, the text for explaining the notion is more than 80%. Yes, it's so easy that a graduate student can read the whole book in a week and capture the concept of statistic. As a researcher, I never take a statistic course but I do learn statistic from practical experience and Wikipedia by myself. Should I know the book is so great I will buy it earlier. However, for serious reader... be careful this is a book for explaining the notion behind the statistic concept. It's a great book for a novice to statistic, but it is NOT a complete reference for statistic. If you are looking for a book that help you to catch the intuition of each statistic conception, you are in the right place.

I believe this is a must-have book for anyone who thinks they have to learn statistic. It is always a good idea to know the notion behind a thing before memorizing the formula for the exam. . The book is filled with examples to explains the notion. If you are somehow like me that know a lot "pieces" of statistic but would like to assemble them into a big picture. The book is great resource because it is easy to follow, and intuition-first style in writing. If you are a person who is already familiar with basic statistic, you might find the book too easy for you though.

In a word, this is a book to teach you the concept of statistic through "human language" but not science notation. It's sort of informal but somehow you are just like attend the author's lecture without really being there. However, this is an intro-level book, and might not a good resource for reader looking for advance statistic approaches or proofs.

My daughter took a college level statistics course, with this book assigned.Her major was in an unrelated field, but the statistics course was required.She needed quite a bit of help with the class, so I bought a second book for me at home.I recall statistics from college back in the 80's, but my book was nothing like this.Caldwell has done an EXCELLENT job describing complex topics.I'm a bit of a numbers geek, and I actually enjoyed reading this book.Moms and dads everywhere should buy a second copy for home, to help their far-off college kids.I was pleasantly surprised.

A valuable reference for empirical modelers
My learning in statistics follows a funny order. Before receiving fundamental training in math stat, I took an introductory stochastic processes and graduate econometrics. I use Rice's book for a math stat course this summer and find this book a valuable reference!

This book helps me synthesize what I've learnt from stochastic processes and economoetrics. On top of that, it provides very useful techniques that will assitempirical modelers to perform estimation of probability models and dereviation of random variables. This book is not advanced enough for stat PhD students but definitely a must-read for non-stat majors who want to get a deep understanding of statistical sciences.

I personally obtain ideas from this book to solve problems confronted in model-development and data-manipulation.

The only thing I would complain about this book is its price.

Decent book but not for biological sciences
This book provides a decent review of basic statistical concepts with application examples.The strengths of the book are that it has a good background chapter on probability, provides some information on non-parametrics, and is firmly rooted in mathematics (ie proofs are offered to demonstrate how some formulas are obtained).Weaknesses of the book include an odd narrative (not typical for a textbook), poorly organized chapters, and inadequate coverage of some topics (ANOVA, MANOVA, ANCOVA, normality tests, K-S test, etc.).I do not recommend this book for anyone in the biological sciences because it does not adequately cover the most used "advanced" tests.

Bought out of compulsion
I had to buy this book just because my teacher used it as required text. The book is pretty mediocre, clearly not worth $135. You can get much better understanding of statistics using books by Schaums series. The book does have decent examples, but is very overpriced- I do not believe it should cost more than $20.

A good introduction, good reference
This is one of the most readable mathematical statistics textbooks. The level of math used is just right for this course. You need to use is mostly univariate calculus, but partial derivatives may pop up in a few places. You also need to know matrix algebra to read most of the chapter on linear models. All derivations and explanations are clear. The statistics portion of the text starts with sampling theory. In fact, it has more on sampling than I personally wanted to learn, such as sampling from finite populations and stratified sampling. Then it continues with estimation methods and hypothesis testing. There is a very good chapter on descriptive statistics. The later chapters focus on specific models, such as comparing the means of two samples, analysis of variance, categorical analysis,and finally the linear regression. The first chapters summarize probability theory, so the text is very much self-contained even for those with no probability background. There is also a chapter on Bayesian methods, which I haven't read.

The two features that I personally like in this text is that for some models the author presents such modern and sophisticated topics like non-parametric statistical techniques and bootstrap methods for obtaining standard errors. Overall, this is a fine textbook. It gives a solid introduction to statistics for people who need to do statistical analysis on their own and for whom this is their first and last statistics course. This text also gives a nice introduction for students of statistics who plan to move onto more advanced texts. There are one or two places where the derivation is simple but gets a little daunting (I think one of them is one of Wilcoxon's tests). But in the end, you must accept one fact. This is a serious university level applied math text for sophomores/juniors. This book can't be read like a novel, though it is a very readable text as far as mathematical stats goes.

Ignore most of those negative comments from readers many of whom clearly have not mastered their calculus and probability skills before taking a stats course. Undergraduate mathematical statistics is a kind of a course that attracts lots of people from many different majors and math backgrounds. Some take stats only because they have to, not because they want to. In the end, (this may sound arrogant), but the quality and motivation of students in an undergraduate mathematical statistics courses may be very variable. Some probably do not belong in a serious stats course. Hence, the flood of negative reviews for this text.

Dont waste your money and this book is really confusing
if you have choice, dont buy this book, it just waste your money and it will totally confuse you. you wont understand the concept through this book. unclear definition, useless example, if you have to use this textbook, you have better have time to search statistic information online by yourself. i am currently suffering from this book, since it is written by a professor in our school. i dont think he knows students well, the book is so unclear and confusing :( ...
