It is the reason that this IMUCC comes only two months after the previous one. On e of the consequences is that the lists of deaths and honours awarded to mathematicians are shorter than usual. The International Congress of Mathematicians is preceded by the General Asembly of the International Mathematical Union, and I have prepared a report on the IMUCC to that General Assembly. It is appended to this IMUCC. Please continue to send information on meetings to Dr David Easdown, Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Sydney, NSW 2006, AUSTRALIA [de@maths.usyd.edu.au] (or to me), and on visitors to Australasia to the Editor of the Australian Ma thematical Society GAZETTE, Mr Basil R. Timeline Biographies 1947 dame mary Lucy cartwright (19001998) was elected as a Fellow of the RoyalSociety of England in 1947. She is a prominent female figure in Mathematics. http://www.awis.org/timeline/bios.html
Extractions: Women in History Biographies 1903: Polish chemist Marie Curie (1867-1934) won her first Nobel Prize jointly with her husband and Henri Becquerel for the discovery of radium and polonium. She won the Nobel Prize again in 1911 for the isolation of pure radium. She was the first person to receive two Nobel prizes. 1905: American psychologist Mary Whiton Calkins (1863-1930) was the first female president of the American Psychological Association (APA). She is an important pioneer figure for women in psychology. Her work on a wide set of topics in psychology, including dream research, animal consciousness and the creation of the right associates method of memorization demonstrates her great influence in the development of the field. Nettie Stevens published a paper in 1905 announcing her discovery that the X and Y chromosomes are responsible for determining sex. Her study ended the debate over whether gender is hereditary or determined through embryonic environmental influences. It was also the first link discovered between heritable characteristics and particular chromosomes. Following her discovery, Stevens continued her research at Bryn Mawr College, where she had received her PhD, furthering her research on insect chromosomes. Julia Morgan California Architect , is, perhaps, the most famous female architect ever. She earned her name in 1906 with the reconstruction of the Fairmont Hotel after the 1906 San Francisco Fire. Following this, Morgan received large commissions which allowed her to experiment with "eclectic styles and ambitious construction techniques", as she learned at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts, a Paris design school which she attended as the first woman student.
