Het werkte niet inspirerend op de spelers van FC Zwolle. Verre van dat zelfs. De ploeg van Peter Boeve maakte er een wel erg povere vertoning van tegen de nummer vier van de eerste divisie. Het mag niet, maar het gebeurt elke keer weer. En er valt geen passende verklaring voor te bedenken. Geen enkele modale eredivisionist kan zich een vrije avond permitteren in een bekerduel tegen een team uit de eerste divisie. FC Zwolle leverde daar in het verleden regelmatig zelf het bewijs voor.

Richard Roelofsen, Arjan Bosschaart en Morten Karlsen moesten het veld ruimen voor Marino Promes, Michel Doesburg en Henk van Steeg. Vooral de verbanning van Richard Roelofsen was opmerkelijk. Tot zaterdag was hij nog aanvoerder, maar met zijn openlijke kritiek op de speelwijze van de Zwollenaren verspeelde hij zijn krediet bij Peter Boeve. Vitesse en FC Zwolle zijn al heel lang bezig met een imponerende negatieve serie. De Arnhemmers bleven acht duels op rij zonder zege, de Zwollenaren maakten het nog een tikkeltje bonter met elf duels zonder overwinning. Dat was terug te zien in het veld. Er stonden in het Gelredome twee angstige en kwetsbare ploegen tegenover elkaar. FC Zwolle hield tot de 32e minuut eenvoudig stand. Toen werd de patstelling plotseling doorbroken door Michael Jansen. Een vrije trap van Didier Martel werd bij de tweede paal terug gekopt door Matthew Amoah, waarna Jansen de bal met het hoofd simpel in het doel kon lopen: 1-0.

Rodman is an associate professor of international education at the School for International Training. Reprinted with permission. Although I've worked overseas among Muslims, it took me years to capture the nuances of their communication and to appreciate their preoccupation with relationships. That's why I wrestle with President Bush's ultimatum to the Taliban that our bombing won't stop until Osama bin Laden is handed over. I know the administration has tactical reasons for taking this approach, but I also know how it flies in the face of mainstream Islamic culture. Whether in Asia, the Middle East or Africa, bargaining is communicating. Everything is negotiated, everyone haggles. This is life. Though U.S. films romanticize exotic bazaars where street merchants hold court, the essence of their give-and-take with shoppers is real. Years ago in Cairo, I came out of one more Middle Eastern meeting scratching my head and wondering where the next steps might be toward progress. Though it was a modest group of local school administrators, parents and teachers dealing with ordinary issues, we might as well have been trying to solve the Palestinian-Israeli question for all the words, gestures, posturing, positioning and layer upon layer of history and culture I encountered.
