Quanto all'etimologia della parola, basta tornare indietro all'epoca romana, quando le "calende", primo giorno del mese, rappresentavano il momento in cui si pagavano i conti; quindi a Roma il calendario era il libro della contabilita' delle imprese e delle famiglie. Circa l'odierno significato, possiamo dire che il calendario e' un sistema per raggruppare coerentemente le unita' di misura del tempo di livello superiore; se chiamiamo "giorno" il tempo corrispondente a una rotazione completa della Terra intorno a se stessa e lo consideriamo come unita' fondamentale per la misura del tempo, possiamo dire che il calendario e' il sistema per raggruppare i giorni secondo multipli di varie dimensioni (settimane, mesi, anni, e cosi' via) allo scopo di far corrispondere nel miglior modo possibile lo scorrere del tempo agli usi della vita sociale e religiosa delle comunita' umane. Le modalita' dei raggruppamenti sono state le piu' diverse nelle varie civilta' e nelle varie epoche, ma la concezione di base, comune a tutti i calendari inventati nella storia dell'uomo, e' che essi legavano e correlavano il passare del tempo ai cicli astronomici che si svolgono intorno alla Terra.
